Bryce Canyon Like You've Never Seen It!

  • Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah is a hiker and trail runner's dream. Miles of perfectly groomed trails through the spectacular and mystical hoodoos that form its slot canyons, spires, windows, fins and spires. We only had one day to explore Bryce NP, so we figured.... why not just do ALL the major hikes in Bryce in a day? We started at Sunset Point on the Queen's Garden/Navajo Loop, made our way through the Peak-A-Boo Loop, hiked back up to Sunrise Point, down over to the Fairyland Loop, and ended with a spectacular run along the Bryce Rim Trail to Bryce Point. Wow. That was one unforgettable hike! If you're thinking of visiting Bryce, winter is a fantastic time to go. And give some of the lesser known trails a try!

    Ran into them in the parking lot after this hike…such genuine people just like in their videos! They asked me what trail I did and I told them peekaboo loop…I asked them what trail they did and they said “all of them” lmao. These two are incredible and inspire this East coaster to keep filling up my bucket list. They also shared some great info for my upcoming Kilimanjaro trip. 💜 ✊🏻

    As Elise sings "open your eyes" we watch her running through Fairyland and it clicks - we are able to open our eyes to these wonders of nature because of Adam's directorial eye. It's the combination of real athleticism and the flow of an experienced videographer that creates the compelling dynamism in these fast-paced travelogues. It's always a trade-off for the athlete to get out of their flow and think about how to show others what a natural setting feels like. These guys are both cast and crew.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I’ve been watching all your videos for a few months now. I’m amazed at the endurance of both of you. Was Adam a professional athlete at some point. I bet he could tear up an Ironman in his day, even now probably. Love you guys, Hank F

      Thanks so much, Hank! So glad you're enjoying the videos. Adam was a fairly high level athlete in high school (all-state) and college, but never played any professional sports. As for an Ironman, we're both thinking that's something we'd like to do at least once in the future, though Adam needs to improve his swimming and Elise needs to improve her biking if we're going to do a full-distance Ironman. ❤️

    Loving all your adventures makes my bucket list get larger everyday! Living in NH we will have to make a trip out that way soon. Hardest part is choosing which one to tackle first. That makes us so psyched to hear! It really is hard deciding what to do first when you have a limited-time trip, but Zion and Bryce are quite close together, and less than a day's drive from the Eastern Sierra where your options are limitless, so that might be our recommendation. ❤️

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's amazing, Steven! That would be the coolest ultra ever -- they probably go around the back side to get it up to 50 miles. It took us quite a while with filming and a few long breaks -- about 8 hours total, and roughly 6 hours or so of moving time. We haven't done Strava because with all the filming it wouldn't really give an accurate picture for regular hikers or runners. But with that said, Adam does have a few routes he wants to time while running full out without filming -- including his LA Trail Marathon route and the Mt. Baldy Ski hut route, so we will probably download the app at some point this winter.

    I love Bryce. Not sure when you actually did the hike; but full moon/near full moon was for a few days over the 18th-20th. Hiking down into the Hoodoos during a full moon is unreal! Did you guys stay at the campground (on the left just after entering the gate)? Real nice spots; 5 minutes from the rim, and cheap; $18 I think, with facilities. My experience, on weekdays, there are usually spots open until 3pm. Last, a lot of people may not realize how hard that hike was; elevation at the rim is over 7K. BTW; did you notice the elevation marker as you turn left on Hwy 12 from the entrance to the park? 7777.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! That 7777 was neat, and you make a good point -- we forgot to comment on the elevation of the whole thing, which definitely adds to the challenge. We actually stayed at the big hotel right there in Bryce (about 4 miles from the trailhead) because they were having such a good deal (about 100 bucks with a full breakfast for 2) and we like when possible to sleep in a bed the night before a sufferfest (but only if it's 100 bucks or less!). In high season we would definitely choose the 18 dollar camping option -- thanks much for that info about the weekday spots!❤️

    Hahahaha I love how you brought up Advil. I was gonna ask if you two are just very sore in the knees, ankles or hips from running downhill? I find it much easier to hustle uphill rather than down. I don’t know what my hiker age would be but, at 43 I’ll take one at mile 9-10 so it kicks in at mile 12-15 when I’m done for the day. Hahaha.

    Bryce Canyon Natl. Park, named after a the first pioneer cattleman settler, Ebenezer Bryce, captures the heart & mind.
    Situated high on the Colorado plateau at the top of the Grand Staircase, the park's high elevations include numerous life communities, fantastic dark skies, and geological wonders that defy description.
    In geological terms, Bryce is actually an amphitheater, not a canyon. From the highest point, at over 9,000 feet, to the lowest, at 6,620 feet, the park spans 3000 feet elevation change and 3 unique climactic zones: spruce fir forest, ponderosa pine & pinyon pine forest.
    Adam & Elise have chosen to, pretty much, take on the entire park system (over 24 miles & elevation gain just south of 4,000 ft.), all its beautiful trails in one day and make it look like a brief walk in the park at that. Passing thru forests of hoodoos, colored in deep orange & crimson hues that are intensified by the light of the sun, under some of the clearest skies anywhere. It’s been documented that on a clear day the views extend 200 miles & into 3 states.
    And throughout most of the expedition high clouds seem to stop & listen to Elise’s vocals as they softly rise to greet them.
    At around the 15 mile mark Adam stops to share a little snippet of his deep & rich wisdom by quoting a poem by Edmund Spencer, “The Faire Queene”.
    It is notable in that metaphorically speaking, if you’ve lost something, it doesn’t mean that it’s gone forever. If it can be found by searching for it, then was it really gone?
    I believe what Adam is inferring here is very important to us all. That is, don’t let social media or negative forces rule your world. Slow down, let go of your fears, take time to look around. You’ll be sure to find yourself wrapped in a blanket of life’s most beautiful moments.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frans this is beautiful, educational, and poetic all at once! And you are so right about how we were feeling in Fairyland (and really on the whole hike) -- that the everyday things that might seem troubling get swept away by the overwhelming power of exploring natural beauty, and what's really important to us reappears and envelops us in its warmth. Thank you for putting it so perfectly. ❤️

      Hahaha no Tom, you're doing it right if you don't need the Advil! But the short version is that we use a lot of Google searches, use AllTrails for great maps and descriptions of routes, use more specialized sites like PeakBagger for the more obscure routes, and also get lots of great beta from subscribers to this channel. A lot of times people will send us the coolest hikes with detailed descriptions of what they think we should try, and pretty much all we have to do is go do it!

    LOVE all the mini-tunnels and switch backs. And most of the trails are not overly rocky so you can cover some ground. Looks like an archaic rock/sand quarry dug by God himself! As always thanks for taking me/us along! How much water did you carry? Anywhere to reload on that 21 miles?

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christine you are absolutely right about the trails -- they were in perfect condition, which made moving at speed so much easier than it is on rocky, uneven trails. Most of these were butter smooth. Believe it or not, we only carried our little pint water bottles that go in the front pockets of our vests. That was because it was cool and we were able to reload twice at the drinking fountain at Sunset Point, which was the kind of anchor point for the whole run (nice restrooms there too!). ❤️

      Haha Andy I have made one exception to my hatred of giving up vertical -- it turns out if the scenery is spectacular enough and I'm not totally exhausted, I barely notice! That was the case on this one, and also on the Trans-Catalina trail that was up and down the whole way but so visually stunning that I hardly even minded. Grand Canyon R2R was stunning the whole way too, but I was exhausted enough by the end that I was still hating the vert loss😂. BTW, big congrats to you on doing Bryce in a day -- that thing is no joke given the milage and high altitude, not to mention the vertical loss and gain! --A

      Martin it's truly delightful for us to know that you're reliving some of your adventures through our videos. Adam has actually had a couple of adventures in Shropshire, believe it or not, hiking in the Shropshire Hills area before hitch-hiking a long and winding ride with a lovely couple on his way to climb in Snowdonia and then the Lake District, then ultimately winding up in Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. He loved all of those areas, but of course it's tough for anywhere to top the natural wonders of Bryce! ❤️

      Oh, word of warning, going up the canyons in red rock is quite rough with loads of cool Boulder climbing, Boulder bouldering, but lots of scratchy prickery plants! With shorts I was bleeding good every day! February or March, longer cooler days are best so you can wear pants. You will thank me later. . . The other PITA, is this one pervasive tree with poky leaves that are falling off into your shirt, under you pack every time you bump them. Late winter is best. . . I’m going to post a less known route up Bridge mountain that was VERY COOL in a couple weeks. Got lost a couple times finding it, I could guide you there or another more technical complex route on Juniper peak to rifle notch peak and down terrace canyon. that trip is in my “videos” if you want to see it. Only a bit of class 5 easy with good route finding. Wilson peak would also be epic tallest in red rock. I have white point posted from that mountain, also very cool! These areas IMO are very demanding, you guys can definitely handle the routes and sticky class 4 sand stone but, since there are many many ways to get off route, lost and badly cliffed out with little water around, it can be stressful and dangerous. I think you know, it takes quite a bit to get me worried, I got nervous more than once, In many ways this area is tougher then my CO Rockies.

      Haha ya Andrew, there's nothing we've ever seen that can quite compare to Bryce visually. With that said, though, Santiago Peak is a serious hike! 17 miles with over 4000 of vertical? Nice! Pretty similar to the 21 miles and 3300 feet we did at Bryce. So you're ready for it, and we think you should road trip it out and do our same route! Or at least the Queen's Garden -- Peekaboo -- Fairyland part, which was amazing! ❤️

    • @andrews7911
      @andrews7911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard It appears there are a number of routes to Santiago Peak. I took a shorter route starting at Trabuco creek road up to Joplin Trail to the ropes section up to main divide road. I took the longer way back because i was concerned about slipping coming down the rope section and i was alone. This route was 13.8miles 4780 elevation gain. 16.5 miles if you skip the steeper ropes section and just take Joplin trail up to main divide road. I was planning to do this hike after we got a bit of snow, i think it would be really nice then. I am improving but this was hard and i took Sunday off to relax / recover lol. The hike wasn't planned, Ortega hwy was closed so i needed a plan b, it just happened.

One thing for the future - it would be nice to see a bit of the build up to the trail as you've done in some of your videos. • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bill! That's a great question. Cuts are so hard for us. We had tons of good footage, so we just tried to cut things that seemed repetitive even if they were beautiful (because everything there is beautiful). And since this one didn't have any natural story line to edit around (we weren't concerned about being able to summit or finish) we basically just kept in the shots that did best justice to the scenery.
