I remember having to watch this in school. It hits differently after voting for the first time, and truly understanding the struggles they had to fight for.
Do you not get it? Who wore pants then oh yeah it was men and what do men have THE RIGHT TO VOTE so its saying they just want to be treated like men do!!!! Try to actually be smart next time
Dr. Banjo My sister was part of the group that fought for the right of girls to wear pants in our schools in our town. There was a time when girls Weren't allowed to wear pants to school. I remember it. It wasn't fun. And we fought to wear pants.
Harry T Burn, the man in the video who changed his vote, was my great uncle. His mother, my great grandmother, wrote him that note in his pocket to encourage him to do the right thing. There's a statue of the two in my hometown that says: "Every vote counts Every letter or phone call counts One more person doing the right thing can make all the difference" That story, the story of doing the right thing for others even when it is hard, has inspired so much of who I am. I will forever be grateful. This music video still makes me tear up after all of these years. I'm so grateful for its creators.
Thank you for your comment. That’s some great family history. Kudos to them both! I also got a tear in my eyes when I thought of what those women went through, not only for themselves but for us! We stand on their shoulders, and we also have our own fight today. I only ask that the ERA get put into the Constitution in my lifetime, but it’s not looking like that’s going to happen (I’m 73). I will continue to fight for as long as I’m able.
That is just AWESOME! What an amazing bit of family history! I think my mother (who wouldn't have particularly liked the music) would have approved of this video if she'd ever seen it -- when I was a kid she would bring me into the voting booth with her, like my dad with with my brother). Because she was raised that VOTING IS IMPORTANT! And I remember the first time she ever voted a split ticket, instead of just pulling the big GOP lever -- it would have been in the mid to late 1970s, when the "Right to Life" party was moving in on judgeships in NYS. And she was going "OMG -- I do NOT want those people anywhere NEAR the bench! Hmmm --- Republican line, Conservative Party line, RtL party line..." And voted for the Democrat in EVERY JUDICIAL RACE (If my MAGAhat cousin ever heard that she did that -- and the reason why? His brain would explode....)
I also find it interesting that many people today think it was so long ago, but, to me, because I’m 73, remind myself that my own mother was already five years old when women got the vote. Doesn’t seem so long ago when I remember that, .
It is very factual. It even has the Alice Paul character quoting a modified version of the Equal Rights Amendment, and Abigail Adams (wife of John Adams) quote from a letter to her husband: “Remember the Ladies” imploring him to write women into the new Constitution. Sadly, he just laughed at her request. Well done!
GoddessNeith your grandfather seems like a very nice guy. He must have really loved your grandmother. That is exactly what a husband or boyfriend should be to their partner ie loving and supportive. I thank him for doing the right thing by supporting your grandmother in her efforts.
I've been canvassing for Harris in Pennsylvania. Hearing women declare their support is exciting, but the encouragement from husbands and fathers was truly moving!
Our social studies teacher showed us this and now it has become a song my whole friend group knows the lyrics to and dances to lol. Thanks for making this, I know I’ll get so much nostalgia from it in the future ❤
I'm glad they finally added the credits. After I saw this for the first time quite a few years ago, I had to look hard to identify Meredith Garrison as the Alice Paul character. She's brilliant!
the power this song has that even its parodies are masterpieces. Its already a classic. And to think that it was written by Gaga when she was only 23 🤯
Angeline Ma™ It was actually an issue. Skirts in those days were long and heavy to preserve "modesty", and severely restricted movement; countless women were burned when their skirts caught fire, fell down stairs by tripping on a hem, drowned if they fell in water, and plain couldn't do anything physically active--no sports, or even bike-riding. And any woman who wore sensible clothes, such as trousers, was arrested for cross-dressing. So pants do contribute to progress.
Rosa Night oh yeah, I do agree. what I mean is that many people might not understand what they mean because the line sounds so sudden. I mean that they should maybe provide some introduction to the "I wanna wear pants!" line so that people can understand that they might take their freedom for granted.
Rosa Night Exactly. There was a whole movement around it called rational dress. It started out advocating against the tight lacing of corsets and expanded into other things, bicycle suits, bloomers (not underwear, a sort of precursor to pants), skirts that were above the ankle and easy to move in etc.
I came on to share my delight at how creative and fun this video is and just find a bunch of men freaking out about it? SERIOUSLY? This video speaks only to equality and the bravery that women had to fight for the vote. Men attacked women marching for that right, it was not an easy movement. I'm very disappointing in the little boys complaining right now. This is a 100 year anniversary tribute boys, get over it please and celebrate with the rest of us.
I would like to say, thanks to Professor Fink for introducing me to Alice Paul and showing me this video. If you see this comment, I really appreciate what you have taught me in your classes.
I’m from the south and I remember seeing this in 5th grade and I remember hearing a few boys saying they didn’t like it bc it over dramatized what women had to go through to get the right to vote. But this song still slaps
I remember I saw this in my U.S History class, then saw your other video of "To late to Apologize" in Middle school :) I still suggest this to any history teacher who wants to both: 1. make a point in their lesson 2. and still have your students attention near the end of the day This did do just that, least for my class
People that hate this video and think us woman should not have rights. I put a middle finger up to you. This video is amazing, and shows the history of woman suffrage.
this is my favorite parody i've seen it talks about the past and how women got there right and I learned about that in school last week and this is a really good review it makes it easy for me to remember because I can get this song stuck in my head pretty fast thank you for all your time and dedication for this video I have a teacher that's really in to photography and he said this video must have been a lot of money thanks once again for making learning easy for me with this song.
Discovered this by accident, can't wait to share it with my wife. We're of an age to remember the progress of the 60s and 70s and wonder how anyone could let so much of that progress be lost through inaction. All that aside, the artistic imagery is powerful. Rock on, women o the world. Here's one man who's glad to make room for you as equals, side by side with us.
My 8th grade class was extremely engaged in this video, and I heard one young lady even say, "That was AWESOME!" as she left class. Thank you!! I hope you'll make more wonderful history videos like this!
You know, I thought this was very strange at first and then realized just how good this would be to show to a U.S. History or Women's History class. I think I may just use this one day soon. Very well done and I have to say the random girl shouting "I get to wear pants" made me laugh. Wasn't expecting someone to shout that ahaha. Thank you for creating videos like this for teachers to use as a fun way of explaining history to students!

We watched this in US History the other day and I absolutely love it. It was amazing to see the class go dead silent during the video. Amazing video and clever lyrics.
The women (and some men) fought so hard for all of us to be given the chance to vote. And now a lot of people don't even participate in any political matter small or big that requires a vote. I feel like it's so disrespectful to women's suffrage.
A judge appointed by Barack Obama ruled that a boy can go into the girls shower room if he feels like it. The Biden administration is twisting Title IX into a weapon to destroy the integrity of women's athletics (this has been done in Canada look that up and see how it turned out). Think this is what the Suffragettes had in mind? I like the WOLF Women's Liberation Front they are for "preserving female spaces".
I don't know why but this brings me to tears every time I hear it :/ Maybe its because I've studied British suffrage and know some of the hardships they've had to endure? :( It was truly horrific... Makes me realise how easy we have it today compared to back then.
I saw this video at school and I thought it was one of the best Videos of a parody that I've ever seen the costumes are great and they use the wording perfectly so that it all fits together and makes it one of their best songs ever plus it's a great way to teach people about an important subject in American history

i dont think it really qualifies as a parody just because of how well made it is. I'd consider it an adaptation

I remember having to watch this in school. It hits differently after voting for the first time, and truly understanding the struggles they had to fight for.
And these days, some men and women don't even vote!

So relevant today. We, the heirs to this movement, should never forget what our grandmothers gave us.
Women's suffrage hasn't been relevant since the 20th.
I listened to this in history class so long ago and it still hits hard
My daughter loves this video. Her social studies teacher showed the class this video to help them learn about women's rights.

BEST parody I've seen! So well done! Gaga would be so happy to see this!
she wrote it
I'm guessing she's seen it, and that she's proud to have her music used this way!

Best version of this song ever.
The Economics of Sex
I really liked that at the end the father was happy his daughter got to vote.
Which part are you talking about?
Near the end when all the guys are voting, and the last one votes "yes", and they start fighting you can see him smiling in the background.
That's meant to be the President of the United states...
