I am really so tired of that part of our time. We need more people like Bill that can be a little bit unbiased here and there and actually disagree with "his tribe" every now and then. Nowadays it just feels like difference of opinion is not even allowed to exist anymore.
Bill Maher is one of the few remaining reminders of why I _started out_ as a leftist. I might even go back if there were more, like him. Now, I'm not on the right either, but I do mock both, as appropriate. Unfortunately, the left is often the louder one and is thus more often deemed appropriate by me to mock. But hey, I'll proudly wave the flag of problematic (common insult word used by the left) degenerate (common insult word used by the right).

So are you disagreeing with Bill's video? I'm not sure what your point is except to get clicks.
Yeah, as with Afro-Americans learning that the sellers of those slaves, their supposed ancestry, were mostly `black´ people & Orientals. Evil white folks were not 25% of the slavers ever, as we were too lazy, too craven, and our little penises failed to secure the loyalty of any women.

But he shouldn't though! He is actually saying reasonable things that shouldn't even be an issue! I am not American, but it stands to reason to me that a nation should and can only one anthem, as a symbol of unity. The fact that Americans are now even DISCUSSING this is deeply worrying! Because, Bill was right about Yugoslavia, I am from the Balkans, I know! That country went down the shithole so fast you can't even believe it, and of course it was due to deep differences and inequalities, but a HUGE part of it was due to people stop believing in the "country" even on the simpliest things (like an anthem) to the point that they started identifing themselves not as "Yugoslavs" anymore but as "Serbian, "Croats" or whatever. That was a death sentence for the country and something from which the region has yet to recover fully even after all these decades, which led to horror stories that people can't even believe and yet it happened. I don't see the US going that way, but I am worried because it is showing clear signs of going EXACTLY that way... and is not as if I could have predicted the horror show of Yugoslavia either, so...

That's because he's not a "lifelong" anything. Ideology binds us to the notion that one side is always right, and that's obviously not true. We take the decision to bind ourselves to a group because the group offers both strength of numbers and affirmation of SOME beliefs. But people stop questioning that affiliation as 'SOME" in even in cases where it might conflict with their positions, because we feel, neurologically, a need for that safety in numbers, to lower our anxiety over the unknown as a consequence of difficult decisions. We want to stay in the tribe, so we stop questioning the tribe and start presuming its ideological opponents are always wrong. Anyone who self-identifies as a "Liberal" or a "Conservative" is immediately signaling that they've made up their mind base on binary opposite notions, when almost every issue has positions of nuance. If you weren't a "lifelong" anything, he wouldn't surprise you at all.
I guess you didn’t listen to everything thing he said? Get rid of the national anthem we have and pick another? Don’t even have a National Anthem? All he said is if we have a national anthem we have only one.

At least 60% of the electorate resides between the two bookends of far right and far left; if they wanted to they could stand up a third party that would outnumber the extremists by almost 2:1. Why aren't we? It's clear that no one in government is speaking for _us,_ only the rabid base of their respective parties; unless we assert ourselves as a voting bloc, that is only going to continue and get worse.
The guy speaking in the video has been driving what would become what is happening now. He believes in being rude and saying what he wants and mocking people. That mindset leads to racism because he inspires people to be rude and say what they want and to mock people. So rudely telling Who'ity to get out and leave their multicultural space alone is following Bill's behavior. Not Bill's ideology, but Bill's behavior. Behavior Inspires Behavior, people already have their favorite ideologies. Anyone wishing to get the message out about their ideology will find Bill's Behavior inspiring. For the uneducated who say that Behavior does not inspire Behavior, how did WWI or WWII Happen? It started with one man's Behavior towards other people, laws and rules he did not like. Bill did not like the established law and order, so he (and other comedians) fomented rebellion. They did not like the schools teaching religion. They did not like the traditional family structure. They did not like constraining scruples. Well constraining scruples were what was holding back what you see rampant in the USA. Now people have no scruples so you have anarchy. NO! You can not have a little of each, that is anti-nature. One side will always be content and the other side will never have enough. I always thought that the point of anthems is that everyone puts their differences aside and for a couple of minutes, are reminded through mutual demonstration that they are all part of one civilisation. It can humanise the "other" by showing that we do have things in common. People who can't stop snarling at each other long enough to sing a song together (out of key) for two minutes are unlikely to maintain a successful, unified civilisation.
YES....and I'm a Black person who grew up singing "Lift every voice and sing" at specific functions (in the 70's). I like the song. I still sing it. I always will. Honestly, though I never really thought of it as a Black National Anthem. Just a song--an important song--with compelling lyrics about the Black experience. (BTW The last line of the song is a commitment to America......so it's ironic it's being used to be divisive....just sayin'...) So I say, ONE ANTHEM because we are/should be/ want to be ONE PEOPLE. PS-- It tickles me that the song is in the Hymnal at my almost all white and very conservative church.

Agreed. What (also) saddens me is colleges still clinging to the HBC label. It's great that those institutions devoted their efforts to bringing Black students up to a place where they can more effectively compete against everything that was working against them in this country (lofty goal to say the least, and a respectable accomplishment) . But in this day and age, to continuously remind everyone that this college is still obsessed with race ... when will we just be humans together and not push race in people's faces all day every day. 😔 I had a coworker whose daughter was looking at colleges and she picked an HBC solely on the fact it was an HBC. When my coworker announced the selection to folks at work she just haaaaaad to mention it's an HBC, every time, with this proud sparkle in her eye. Up til that day I never saw her as black, I only saw her as a strong and driven woman, but SHE wanted it to be about race.
Racial segregation was justified by dehumanizing others. If they're less human, they don't have equal human rights and there's nothing wrong with segregating them. The left has developed such a frantic religious fervor around their ideology that they have dehumanized their political opponents. For them, anyone to the right of Stalin is less than human and are unworthy of equal human rights.
@hazel Greene, I don’t have an issue with the “HBC” label, as it is simply a descriptor, allowing information on how they began. At least, it used to be about that; I’m not sure it’s still about convey the roots. My stepdad (who was genuinely white, like English settler white) was actually offered a scholarship to HBC to play football. I hate calling him my stepdad, because he has passed and he was just “dad” from the time I was 3. My biological father has also always been dad (well, I actually call him “old man” now) it was simply differentiated by which one I was around, but my heritage on his side is Chickamauga Cherokee and French. My mothers side is all Scottish and Irish. None of this matters. At this point I am American. The point of my post is that at some point “HBCs”, only saw that name as descriptive, and didn’t even segregate. On an interesting side note, the founder of that “HBC”, Dr. Lane’s grave was recently moved from my biological grandparents land to wherever his descendants wanted him to rest. He was buried in the woods on their land, not in a nefarious way, rather with a headstone of pure marble, and very well hidden. While your sentiment is appreciated and encouraging. Unfortunately, that is not reality. Truth be told there will always be two amerikka's. Even if you don't want to put it in terms of black and white. This country has two party political system which creates an "either or" society. Same thing with it's economic structure (Capitalism), it creates a "have & have not" system of finance. It just so happens that by history, and by design...black and brown people seem to be on both negative ends of those respected spectrums. I wish I could take your sentiment and spread it across the nation, because we need more people who think like you. Unfortunately, I not as optimistic. Because it's by design. The people in power (both sides) WANT it to be this way. And have spent the last 400 years defending it "way of life."
Black and brown people are not all on the other side. Look up top GDP per capita by ethnicity, Indians are # 1 and many asiatic peoples are in the top ten. Also, Nigerians do really well, which kind of proves that the system isn't rigged against black and brown people in general. I'm not huge on his personality, and I don't always see eye to eye with Maher, but I've never heard anything from anyone which made me feel like I did watching this. I agree emphatically on every facet.
If what Maher is saying were true, I’d agree with him. But he has a habit of creating the most ridiculous straw men then arguing against his creations. Take the “black national anthem” thing at the NFL. He creates a straw man that suggests people are supposed to sing one OR the other, depending on their race. That’s not at all the case. The Star Spangled Banner has long been associated with the US winning its battle for liberty and independence. All well and good, but Black Americans weren’t freed until almost a century later. “Lift Every Voice And Sing” celebrates the freedom of African Americans. People aren’t supposed to sing one or the other. Everyone should be singing both. The point of singing both is recognizing that the first song did not represent freedom for all Americans, and the Americans left out of the original celebration of freedom actually matter. Everyone, regardless of race, singing both songs is *not* segregation. Everyone singing both songs is recognizing the full story of liberty for all Americans, instead of just the part of the story that celebrates the liberty of some Americans. I don’t know why Maher can’t understand this.
@@maargenbx1454 not sure if I'm missing something, but Maher's whole point is to unite (and change things), he wasn't suggesting to sing one or the other, simply one (and sure, make that "Lift Every Voice And Sing") . They just couldn't DO ANYTHING during Reconstruction because there was protection for Black folks. Soon as that left, so did the 'rights' my ancestors had. Ninety years of Jim Crow...who stopped thinking the way they thought in the 1960's? NO ONE. Those two LBJ signatures made white people Republicans in the majority to the present day (and counting). Like Dr. King SAID, "I fear, I am integrating my people into a burning house." White people will NEVER truly see us as equal...they have OWNING us in their DNA. And not having enough, is NOT the fault of another race. How many white lives were lost the Civil War to abolish slavery? You know how many barely literate, newcomers to this country, who came across the Atlantic in the steerage compartment of the ship? And before they could disembark their disease ridden living quarters on the ship, many men had to allow themselves to be conscripted into the Union Army, and fight to abolish slavery. Yeah, because the problem with "separate but equal" was playing two different songs before a football match and not, say, the systematic disenfranchisement of 30% to 50% of the population. Great historical analogy. (Just for the record: "Separate but equal" was a Jim Crow propaganda slogan. In reality, whites and blacks were neither separated - African American women especially would often work as domestic servants - nor in any way or form equal.)
Separate but equal is intended to create a level playing for every student who walks into a public education K-12 system in the USA. There are extensive processes in place at your local public school districts that make sure this concept is happening. You can have any public school administrator (K-12 public ed) explain how this happens on their campus. It is a federal protection for students K-12 who are recipients of special education services.

F. Scott Key did put that racist verse in the Anthem originally, but the Leaders in power at the time would NOT allow that verse in, even during that time. And I would like for ppl to think about the fact that blk ppl live, laugh and enjoy events right alongside of you all while knowing the racist history behind it. There are plenty of other patriotic songs, and if you wana add this one to the list, so be it cool. But you cant play it alongside or replace the N.Anthem.

Segregation, regardless or the intent, is wrong, and I suggest applicants vote with their wallets and not go to colleges that promote this crap. Hopefully there are still some decent ones left.
I had a coworker whose daughter was looking at colleges and she picked an HBC solely on the fact it was an HBC. When my coworker announced the selection to folks at work she just haaaaaad to mention it's an HBC, every time, with this proud sparkle in her eye. Up til that day I never saw her as black, I only saw her as a strong and driven woman, but SHE wanted it to be about race.
No it’s not “bad”. And I say,
Segregation now… segregation tumawrruh… segregation fohevah 🙏
I don’t know why he was there, that hasn’t been figured out, but I only stumbled upon it while I was out hunting.

And if you're dumb enough to think all those white Southerners suddenly changed their minds as the laws changed in 1964 and 1965, you need to find any teachers still alive and slap them. Laws don't change minds. And that's the part of this I'm dumbfounded by when I hear white people talk...who stopped thinking the way they thought in the 1860's? No one. I'm not hotep, but I often wonder if the problem wasn't the separate part...the most prosperity Black people have had collectively and not just as small clusters of individuals has been when white people have left us the hell alone and not terrorized us (i.e. Tulsa, Rosewood, Greenwood). It was the 'equal' part...we never had actual EQUALITY in that separation.

How can we go forward when Conservatives ran on keeping black people out of the nice suburbs?
The Yugoslavia part cuts right to the heart. I share the same fear, and I'm glad I'm not alone with this concern.
Yes, the showing of a once united Yugoslavia for over a century, then the ruins of a civil war- very poignant. I do have a problem though with what Maher referred to as redress, when talking about the slavery issue. Blacks have everything and MORE, now in this country- but the one thing we can't give them, and all the $ in the world won't buy it for them, is SELF ESTEEM !! They were immediately separated from their families on the dock, and many men never saw them again. many of the women were constricted by years long servitude commitments, which just covered their room and board. EVERY ethnicity they came to these shores, had to fight for their place in this experiment of a country, that had just formed.

Bill is basically a right wing hack at this point. When was last time he had socialist or a real Lefty on his show and not just another corporate neoliberal. He's closer to being a republican then he is a socialist that's for sure
I think it's clear this is the best new rule Bill has done in a while. The writing, the delivery, the salience, it was all there! The comparison to Yugoslavia gave me shivers. Hear, hear for everything said!
As someone who grew up in Yugoslavia, this is a spot on reference. Though I am confident that it will go over most people's heads. (maybe 1 of 100 people I've met know that Yugoslavia was a country)

Bill, I've been watching you for years, from Poland. You are a witty genius who can brutally and accurately point out the absurdities of all contemporary politics, all over the world. Exactly - these divisions, if we dig more as the extreme left and the extreme right want it, will lead us to catastrophe. The same is currently happening in Poland, maybe not so much in terms of race, but in terms of two political camps. Please Bill - never stop. Your voice of reason is the only light in the tunnel!

I read something not too long ago that seems to fit here: "when you're so woke that you agree with the KKK, it might be time to take a nap."
You ever sung a song written by someone who considered ppl that look like you to be subhuman?
That's the circle of woke
@@jausti2 If you've ever sung anything (including a stunning number of church hymns that are sung in black churches) written before, say, about the 1970s, you have. So yes--we all have done so at least once.
I have also sung Lift Every Voice during events to celebrate Dr. King's life and legacy on the national holiday that is his birthday.
Personally, I think that *Lift Every Voice is the better choice to be our national anthem* here in the US (for everyone, regardless of melanin expression), but just as some people take issue with verses of The Star Spangled Banner that aren't sung, I expect the non-religious and anti-religious among our countrymen would generate false outrage because the third verse--of a hymn written by a white dude in 1900, for the record--speaks specifically and directly of asking God to keep us on the right path.
@@K_Cummins so what song have you sung by someone who thought you were subhuman
@@jausti2 As an American Indian (the phrase my family prefers), if it was written by a non-AmerIndian at any point in history (since the US continues to refuse to honor its treaties with AmerIndians to this day), pretty much everything I've ever sung falls into that category.
Or you could try, you know, not assuming things about other people and being combative for no f***ing reason on a TH-cam channel that is literally dedicated to someone who refuses to engage in the double-plus ungood of groupthink.
Bill Maher nailed the segregation of playing 2 National Anthems!!! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “We may have arrived on different ships. But we’re in the same boat now.”
He is wrong there are no two National anthems in the USA, there is only one The Star Spangled Banner, Lift Every Voice and Sing has existed since the civil rights movement, I can't believe you people are barely having a problem with it, and by the way growing up in the 90s The Star Spangled Banner was played every day in school, and Lift Every Voice and Sing was only played during Black History Month and after The Star Spangled Banner! There was no issue, and how is it segregation if they are both sung at the same event? Honestly you people are just looking something to be angry about all the time!
You do realize MLK sang this song as well?

AS you felt the need to tell, I have a feeling that even the bimbo from the Bronx is more conservative than you.
Thanks for sharing your bigot just like Bill. 10 years ago we had racial equality. The anthem rooted in racism an terror they had to remove the slavery parts. The flag was created when Africans where still in chains. Wtf would I respect flag that literally is a representation of WORLD WIDE TERROR.

@@mija4201223 It’s also the same flag flown by Union soldiers against the confederates who freed the slaves. Well actually the flag changes whenever they add states to the union. So the Flag has only been this way since 1957. This flag we have today was born during the civil rights movement. The flag’s continuous change reflects Americas continuous change. And change is something America continues to need. We may have freedom in some sense but not all of us have freedom in all regards.

Never ever thought I would see Bill Maher as a great patriot who makes tears come to my eyes because he gets it and he's got the courage to say it. This is what this country is about. This is what made America America.
The funny thing is: He hasn't changed much. Everyone else did.
He is also a great patriot when he calls the people on January 6th insurrectionists and points to their annointed orange asshole as the catalyst. Bill hasn't changed, he sees bullshit and calls it out. Doesn't matter which tribe is taking a shit, Bill will smell it.
Bills comments on “Separate but Equal,” were the best part of this video.
