I feel a little bit ashamed to confess it, but recently I listen almost exclusively to "hatofull." I am drawn so much to this amazing album that BAND-MAID has receded into the background. 🙈
I always start with FuwaFuwa, and then listen to the whole album at least once a day. Those last three songs, FuwaFuwa, "voice" and Superstar, are my favourites, but then the playlist restarts from PEACE&LOVE, then goes to POGO! ...
When I first heard POGO!, I was a bit confused about it from the musical point of view, but now I dig it more and more, and yesterday I came to the point "Damn, it's a frigging masterpiece!"
And then Flapping Wings. I always felt it's the most poppy one of all her songs, but when it comes last in this list of six tracks, I perceive it quite differently. No, cluppo never fails.
That last phrase in Superstar, "Peace is the path." ... I keep repeating it in my head all the time. The album was written and sent to print well before the war started here, but "hatofull" is full of prophecies of it, and pieces of advice on how all these problems should be solved in the proper way. Lots of psychological support as well, all those "I've got your back," etc.
That's what I appreciate Miku for. She's just a tiny girl whose father left her when she was a little child, she never had anyone to help her, she worked on three jobs to get some money to start her career as a singer... Yet, she created the best rock band in the world, she carries it through thick and thin, and now she tells me that she's got my back. May God bless her in everything that she's doing.
cluppo the Pillar of Strength 🙏💖🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊

@@brunobryant4846 That's so nice to know the one real person in this world who may be relied upon. Miku never disappoints. There are many talented musicians, but I don't know anyone else to whom I could look up to as a role model. For me, music is a reflection of the inner world of a musician, and of the bands currently active, BAND-MAID and cluppo really stand out for me as very pleasant ones. It's simply a joy being around them.
I always add, for the sake of truth, that there is one more band that I adore, and that is ASTERISM. We have had an argument recently with Alan from Dicodec, who said that he knows a lot of good American bands that are better than ASTERISM. But Alan is a musician, and for him, music has an entirely different meaning. For him "good music" is something that is technically good. I am not a musician, so, for me, it's all about the feel. And ASTERISM has a lot of nice feels.
That's the reason I adore cluppo as well, although she plays a style which I have never listened to before. Same as Ryan, actually 🙄 All those horns and synths... Such stuff was never in my playlist. But here I am, listening to "hatofull" all the time, and always on the verge of tears...

    • @RyanMear
      @RyanMear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Dude... Asterism is BUILT out of talent.... like, the screws holding the talent together are made from talent! You'd have to assemble the best of the best to even compare, and they are just getting going!

@@VladimirChupin 👍 I'm 63 Vladimir, now retired to help look after my 8 year old granddaughter, I spent many years drumming on the notorious Aussie pub circuit (think AC/DC long way to the top lyrics) I also crewed for many top acts including international artists and in the long run I became very jaded, packed up the kit and became a government bureaucrat🤯 anyhow I missed music but it all seemed very corporate and generally uninspiring, then one day I tumbled onto a little ol 5 piece band from Japan dressed as maids and damn if my rock and roll soul didn't fire up again 😄 I'm back on the drums and loving it and am happily exploring all sorts of new music (dig Nemophila also) and I owe it to those 5 amazing wonderful musicians and the inspiration they have given me (thank you Miku), sorry for the long response but I cannot relay to people enough just what a positive impact these musicians have had on me and anytime I get down I go straight to BM or Cluppo 😃 thank you for all your videos also I have spent many a late night with cold beer enjoying them 😄 stay safe Vladimir , viva the Maids and thank you to the music Gods for Miku 😊👍🍻

Ryan, if you smiled and laughed, Miku won. This is pure Miku. She is so upbeat and happy, you can't help but smile when you listen to the music. I look forward to you reacting to "Sayonakidori", the live acoustic video from their December livestream concert. Someone said sayonakidori means nightingale in Japanese. If it does, Miku proves that she is one.

Yes, her vocal melody singing is fantastic. I hear BM all the way thru this song. She is a SuperStar! She also forces the poppy crowd to listen to some excellent hard rock guitar riffs. This is why the first member of BM was Kanami Tono.

  • @VegetaRabbit

The vocals were impressive; not that she was hitting crazy notes or using vibrato, but because she matched the flow of the syllables to the constantly changing meter of the song. I can't remember the last time I heard a pop song with a guitar solo on western radio.

The way the horns go at 0:39 to 0:41 had me worried. I thought maybe we were getting into "too bright; predictable" then here comes Miku's crazy melody out of nowhere, which goes into the frenetic chorus that no one saw coming, guitar solo off the top rope, switch to 3/4. The build-ups into the chorus are so satisfying.

🕊 💕 This song and 'FuwaFuwa' are two of my favorites on the EP.
They both remind me of Sheena Ringo, with her band Tokyo Jihen (Tokyo Incidents).
Not too surprising that Miku is a huge Sheena Ringo fan.
I like Miku's vocal tone a lot better though.

I really love her lower vocal range, it's really rich and thick, like butter. All these years working with Saiki mixing and creating all the vocals, harmonies, counter melodies, embellishments, has made her a master at vocal production.

Great job! Hatoful is a very interesting EP. Probably my favorite is "FuwaFuwa" but "Superstar" it's pretty close. However, I think Miku's voice in the chorus of "voice" is the really most impressive input. The range that this girl shows is amazing. Outstanding. Thank you Ryan!.

I honestly think that Miku has had the most noticably increase in her talents in Band Maid of all the Maids. The other ladies were obviously almost over burdened with talent. Miku has stepped up her game to another level. She has always had the corner on the power harmony vocals with Saiki. Sometimes on songs like Secret My Lips it is hard to tell the difference between her and Saiki. I notice on all the new music in the last year and a half she no longer has the trademark low vocal enhancement doubling on her vocals. She now is her own vocalist that is so distinctive and powerful. As a guitarist she has completely climbed up the ladder from being just a competent rhthym guitarist to a first class musician. When she is performing now she stands like a guitarist and has more of an instrumentalist's swagger that she did not have in the earlier days. Miku is now a force. I know that I am long winded, but, I have also noticed on newer Band Maid material that they are now taking their unorthodox approach to instrumental song structure and applying that creativity vocally in their songs. These ladies started off as Brand New Maids and have never looked back.

  • @greylocke100
    @greylocke100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

I really enjoy how she changes her register several times. You don't often really hear it when she is backing Saiki up, but she is actually more skilled as a singer than Saiki is, she just doesn't have the vocal power that Saiki does. Miku has more vocal range but her voice is very soft. But I still like it, even if it is a bit too pop for my taste.

    • @VladimirChupin
      @VladimirChupin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

They just have very different inner worlds 😂
For me, Saiki feels like she is an alien from space. She's actually very much like David Bowie whom she adores so much. Just look at the cover of Unseen World which she has designed. It's creepy. Then watch David Bowie's MV for Blackstar. That's what Saiki is on the inside, I feel. Not a human at all. Maybe one of those cat women in the Blackstar city?
But her voice may be truly magical, especially when she sings more softly. Her power is in her sincerity. She's not a talker, but she expresses herself through singing. And she is, strangely, a frontwoman of BAND-MAID, the other four just mass at her rear.
Miku, on the other hand, is a normal human. Even, I would fully agree with her band members, a middle-aged man on the inside 😁
(Not only because she eats dried salmon, far from it 😂 )
She's a serious philosopher, a talented speaker and an inborn entertainer. In order to entertain and talk in an understandable fashion, you must be as normal as possible. And Miku *is* normal.
I would say, she's a warrior, a very experienced and skilled fighter. She understands that she stands for a hopeless cause of life which shall be defeated by death in the end, but she is still fighting. There are very, very few people in the world who understand the reality so keenly and still have the strength to keep living.

I like to think that the EP shows how Miku has learnt song-arranging from Kanami (think the Acoustic set), there's definitely some development in there, esp from the first couple released (more than a year ago?). More and more convinced that they use everything they do as a means to improve (something): Acoustic set - to reacclimatise Misa/Akane with backup vocals (maybe needed with number of vocal tracks) or for all to just think about songs and song structure from different angles? Even BM Nippon, I could see as just a way to loosen them up (particularly Saiki, maybe Akane too) to interviews - I'm not sure Saiki has ever done one without Miku being there. Miku is an absolute star.... she worries about everything, so she must constantly worry about being the one that messes up... but everything I see, she is absolutely solid.
one last thing.... they're like supporting your local team, you just hope the best for them.

Friggin Miku. . . how the hell?!
I don't even like this song, and yet I love it? It starts out and I think, "Oh, this is the really poppy one. It's OK, I guess."
Then, by the end of it, I'm dancing around the room with a smile so wide my face hurts.
So much talent and personality in so small a bird. 🕊
First Miku doing Cluppo things, then Saiki writing 'Corallium'. Now I hear MISA has been writing stuff. I'm very curious.

"SUPERSTAR" is perhaps my favorite song of the EP. Since "Hatofull" came out, I can't stop listening to "Fuwa Fuwa" (77 times according to iTunes), "voice" (76) and "SUPERSTAR" (76). "SUPERSTAR" is the final song and to me, it feels like the combination of "Flapping Wings" (the keys parts) + "Fuwa Fuwa" (the horns and the overall jazz feel) + "voice" (the synth bass + the wah guitar).
I certainly wasn't expecting to love this EP after the 3 music videos but now I'm glad I bought it :)

Then I remembered more... Another person said that Miku's harmonies are often in 4ths instead of the common western approach of 3rds - makes sense as a lot of Japanese traditional music uses scales built around 4ths. She also manages to have vocal lines that are on the off beat instead of the on beat. Not to mention - in this song - the time signature changes. If she is not writing it, being able to actually execute it still shows a musical mind. The spoken part is also reminiscent of Omori Seiko.
I actually like the "B" side of the album more than the videos that have come from it.

Ryan! Greetings on a grey rainy day, belly full with lunch and enjoying the break!
I might have mentioned before, Miku is definitely J-Pop but with a rare adult feel, bordering to jazz. It is probably improper to call it J-Pop after all as she is head, shoulders and pony tails above your run-of-the-mill J-pop "artists"!.
With the help of great friend musicians she is slowly developing a fresh and new genre that could provide a good balance to vocalists with deeper voices. Like Band Maid, she might well become important to an industry that she has little thanks for.
Nor to mention, but you need understand the language, that her lyrics are dense with messages. An adult J-Pop Bob Dylan? Could be...
I am a die-hard fan of Band Maid and all their members, but contrary to quite a few other fans I have no wish to place them on an altar and to pray to them on bent knees.
I prefer to delve into their works and calmly listen to them to find out/discover why they move me. That is why reactions like yours are so important as they become an exchange of views and cooperative/collaborative search!
Some fans are going to kill me for such blasphemy, but the agnostic old geezer has a very thick skin!
    Best regards,
    Robert-Gilles

Hi Robert, you speak from my heart. For almost four years now, there has been almost nothing else musically than Japanese rock in general and BAND-MAID in particular. And since I've been collecting music on tapes and records since the sixties and making music myself since the seventies, I think I have a good idea of where I rank B-M musically and qualitatively. That's why I don't idolise them, but watch their development with "fatherly joy", perhaps also because they are the same age as my younger daughter, who is also climbing the career ladder bit by bit.

Today he's reacted to "Alone", i commented that he shouldn't have deleted Dean's comment because he wasn't being nasty & told the truth & another guy said i'm unsubbing cos your intro is inappropriate. Austin said "Are you sexualizing B-M & are you guys who beats your meats"? He's deleted both our comments. I hope Ryan has more integrity to leave this up cos that guy is a scumbag :)

Yes, that's for sure! Most of the hate is directed towards her guitar skills, but in "hatofull" we hear that she has grown into a pretty good guitarist with her own style. In BAND-MAID she plays what Kanami tells her to play, but as cluppo, she has demonstrated her own composition and ideas about guitar solos. And it's pretty interesting, I should say. Miku is not a shredder like Kanami, but she is pretty good, nevertheless.
I would even say, Miku reproduced Kanami's voice in this solo in Superstar. Do you remember that moment during their Third Online OKYUJI on December 13, 2020, when Kanami was responding to Saiki with her "Wow!" screams? 😂
