Miku is a gifted lyricist. Her songs/lyrics read as poetry without the music. She is a remarkable person and I have so much respect for her and what she has accomplished.

Miku Kobato: singer, lyricist, guitarist, true entertainer, spokeperson, rockstar, popstar... and yet there are still sad people who dare to say she has no talent! LOL
She's fantastic at making songs that are really catchy and enjoyable, but there's always much more behind the "fun". With You is a lovely and dreamy song with some strong city pop vibes, but the lyrics are masterfully written and had so much meaning. I think that kind of extra things are what make J-pop music (not only Miku's, but J-pop in general) way better than the usual manufactured western pop that we have nowadays

I always think Cluppo is sort of (music) therapy for herself. She said many times her thoughts are dark, her personality very melancholic. Her happy extroverted appearance especially as Cluppo seems to help her to fight her inner daemons…

Lyrically this is about a hundred times better than it needs to be for an anime closing theme.
Miku has mentioned in interviews that she feels she can be more personal with the songs she writes as cluppo.
It's great she has both outlets for her creativity.

At the age of 63 this beautiful person has become the inspiration of my life and a daily reminder to never give up on your dreams. I so, so hope Miku finds all the personal and professional happiness, success and satisfaction she wants in her life. All power to the mighty small pigeon 🐦 Cheers, Po😊

Thank you for the wonderful review!
I never cease to admire Miku: worked in several places in order to pay for vocal lessons, managed to find great musicians and create the best band in my genre, learned to sing and play guitar perfectly, writes amazing lyrics, created a solo project, knows how to earn not only on music, makes progress in poker. You may or may not like her work, but Ms. Kobato deserves 1000% respect. There are those who perceive her as a small and pretty girl who says "Po" all the time, but in fact she is a hard worker with amazing willpower, a pigeon with a pure soul and a big and kind heart, as well as an extremely talented and successful musician. I hope someday I will be able to personally express my gratitude to her.
Miku-Sensei, thank you so much for everything you do. You are amazing, the world needs such people. May everything always be fine with you!
I bow low to you. Sincerely, your fan.

One thing that caught my attention and kept me coming back to this song is yet another magic trick she pulls.
She starts the song with this very soft, kawaii/cutesy voice all the way until the first chorus starts (3:40 in this video), then she changes it mid-sentence: she sings "kimito kaketa mahou" continuing that breathy/playful tone, then goes into a fuller "tokenai mama" with more power behind it, and doesn't go back to the soft voice again. She's telling a story even with the technique she chooses to employ when singing certain passages. "The magic we wove" is tender and dream-like, "still unbroken" is more serious and real-sounding.

  • @madsstavang

They lyrics are great, but Miku really showed how versatile singer she is in this song. That almost sighing voice she uses is something I have never heard from her before, and I hope to see more growth from her as a vocalist.

  • @highjynxx

When Miku writes AI in the lyrics it isn't actually written with the kanji 'ai' for love but the separate katakana for 'a' and 'i'. I think this is so the pun is apparent in both languages. Very clever.
I must say I had a similar experience. FIrst listen of this song i thought 'Aww, that's pretty. Nice work, Miku' and assumed i wouldn't listen to it much after that. 50 listens later and I adore it. I think Miku pried open more than a few fans hearts and ears open w this one.

I was just thinking today that the bands of the 60s and 70s mostly wrote about love and happiness. Then in the 80s, 90s and 00s bands seemed to be just agro about everything, but also nothing. Miku and Band Maid are bringing back the love and happiness type of lyrics that initially drove rock. But she's married her stream of consciousness love and happiness writing with the rhythmical and melodic hard rock produced by Kanami, Akane and Misa. Can't really think of too many bands like this. Quite unique in their time. Or maybe i'm over thinking it :)

Miku is great in the fact that she works the lyrics to match them to the material(in this case matching the story of the anime), but still able to weave one that's relatable outside the anime to nonfans as well.

Right there witcha. As someone who was emotionally programmed by 20+ yrs in the military, I often was told by those close that I came off cold hearted. There's 3 people I contribute to reversing that trait. My wife, the incredible Sohyang(Ryan you really need to listen to her) and Miku. That's why SHE is my favorite member of BM. I do worry about her tho...her propensity for self doubt, melancholy and seeming loneliness can really overwhelm. I pray I'm wrong.

Hard Rock and Heavy Metal are my first loves in music. But I enjoy listening to anything that is done well. From Vivaldi to Hendrix to cluppo, it's all good. That's also why I can't stomach most music in the US today. It is mostly cookie-cutter, autotuned garbage. BUT, for this song, the music is easy to listen to and the cadence in her voice is mesmerizing.

Not my cup of tea but I can recognize the growth of Miku through this project. This lady is raging river. I suspect that her admiration for Sheena Ringo goes far beyond music and what really motivates her is to build projects, create something from scratch, challenge herself with every attempt. Like Sheena does. As if the immense challenge of making history with Band Maid wasn't enough!.

Every fake new-age "guru" who preaches positive thinking could use a lesson from Miku. She lives it. For me, what makes Cluppo so interesting is the insight it gives us into her writing for Band-Maid. Behind that Kawaii persona is someone who has been through really dark stuff. No way you could write this way without that life experience.

    Ryan mate!
    Greetings!
The typhoon season has started here and we will stay longer hours at home!
To fully understand Miku's story one has to consider her in her Japanese context:
She was born and bred in Kumamoto, Kyushu Island, a hard-bitten region if there is one in Japan. Actually, Japanese migrants to South and North America are for the greatest part from Kyushu Island who wanted to leave the harsh environment of coal mines and heavy industries. People there are made of a tougher fiber. Moreover, Miku came from a broken family with the consequent hardships. Incredibly enough she has always kept positive. She is not a girl anymore. She is a lady who just went past 30. She loves herd drink and horse races.
As a lyricist she has turned into some kind of Japanese Bob Dylan, taking inspiration from the traditional Japanese tanka and aiku poetry which explains a large use of metaphors and hidden messages. You have to read her lyrics a few times before catching everything, and this if you can read and speak Japanese as it is nigh impossible to properly translate in English or any other language for that matter.
The pandemic has given her the opportunity to pursue this side project with the full support of the other members, especially Misa who also comes from a broken marriage. I already mentioned that none of them is from Tokyo, which meant extra efforts to break the shackles of male-dominated Japanese musical industry.
Do not be fooled by their meekness, humility and utter politeness. It is actually a very potent weapon against some misplaced pseudo machos.
Miku has been the subject of quite a few snide remarks if not downright hate comments from some morons, including some infantile fans. But she never changed.
Art and hobbies are the only ways to stress out in the Japanese society because of all the moral obligations. Nothing is ordered by the government there but asked to cooperate, a thing alien in our Western societies where it is a trend to disobey.
Serenity and peace are the main qualities of Japan with hygiene, social safety, unequalled gastronomy, great service, insignificant crimes and no weapons, but this was all attained through great sacrifices along their history. That is why the Japanese take the time to create art, music included, with such work ethics!
Sorry for the rambling, I have lived too long in Japan! LOL
    Best regards to you all!
    Robert-Gilles

      @Kissthetoad321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thank you Robert-Gilles for these rich comments on our favorite pigeon and your insight into Japanese society. You could be Miku's personal biographer. I greatly admire Miku for her intelligence, her brilliant poetic spirit, her strength of character (I don't want to talk about her obvious beauty because you'd think I'm blinded by her) since I've been following BM's story and of each of its members. Cluppo is an extension of herself, a cute, kind, colorful, and above all positive being evolving in our dark world, saturated with violence, with an uncertain future. Some deny it completely, seeing in it only an idol singing to pop music in the extreme opposition of BM rock, which they adore. If only these could read the words she writes, they would hopefully be touched by the grace they contain. Miku and Cluppo are the two facets of a very talented artist. If we love Miku, we can only love Cluppo too.❤

    An I for an Ai.
Thank you Ryan, for posting this heartfelt video. IMHO Miku's lyrics are Band-Maid's secret weapon and you are right about Cluppo.
Once in a while you'll come across a video that will say that a certain musician is their band's "Secret Weapon" and they will show you what that musician does that maybe you didn't know about. Band-Maid is fortunate enough to have five secret weapons, each with multiple warheads. Kanami's, Akane's, Misa's, and Saiki's skills are not easily overlooked, while it sometimes seems that Miku gets little recognition. But Band-Maid would not exist without Miku and Band-Maid songs would not be complete without her thoughtfully written lyrics. Her use of English/Japanese homophones isn't just clever for clever's sake: they serve the song by communicating deeply and poetically. She can imbue a short verse with several layers of meaning and emotional impact. I've noticed that Kanami doesn't just compose lead, rhythm, and vocal scores; she composes for Kanami, Miku, and Saiki as though they themselves were the instruments while leaving space for Akane and Misa to add their magic. Similarly, Miku's lyrics are notes played in the minds of the masters and princesses conducted through Saiki's and her own voice.
I get disappointed with reactors who dismiss Band-Maid because the lyrics aren't in English. They'll say the song sounds great but they'll pass on it because of the Japanese lyrics. They're already on the internet, but too lazy to look up a translation and see what they're missing. "They are missing something very important"
    "Hey, Listen.
    After everything,
    You only see the surface.
    They are missing
    something very important.
You should find out the truth
    with your own eyes.
    What do you want?
    It depends on you."

Certainly this has two meanings: "I won't lose" and "Love won't lose".

Thanks as always for sharing your insights. I definitely appreciate the lyrics more now. The song also fits the vibe of the anime perfectly. Miku seems to have made a point, in almost literally every interview she did about this song, of saying that this song changed a lot; there was a ton of back-and-forth between the animation company and cluppo and Crow until they got exactly what they want. There's a lot more going on in most of cluppo's songs and maybe her mentioning it so much is her subtle way of saying to people who followed her over from Band-Maid, "If this song isn't your cup of tea, don't worry."
One problem with the whole "you only like this because it's Miku" argument is that it completely removes what Miku brings to the song through her voice, melodies, and lyrics. Miku's talents in those areas add so much to Band-Maid, it's ridiculous to discard them when it comes to cluppo.

As this was written for the anime, I've been watching it (it's very misleading - there is a darkness that is yet to be revealed) and the song fits perfectly with the anime and you can see the influence that the anime producers had, they wanted a song that fit with the mood of the story.

How the hell do you weave nostalgic, melancholy, perhaps bttersweet into a hopeful, uplifting, "light" composition? "Every little thing she does is magic...." Love the entire album. At first this was an easy pick for being my least favorite. But the more I listened to it... not such an easy pick anymore. Listening to the album, a song like this almost needs to be there...just beause she has the ability...
Her vocals were made for the music on this albu, imho. And thinking on that brought me back to her original concept for Band Maid, if I recall, was her as the vocalist, but being humble enough, and having the recognition to see that Band Maid's songs needed Saiki's vocals... smh, ceasely amazed by her. Great review...Thanks!

1:47 damn Ryan, you just paused right when all my body anticipated the chorus. You just ruined my goosebumps hahaha
I love this song, the chorus get stuck in your head for a long time. The only downside, for me, is the fade out. Especially when there's a little change in the chorus at that exact moment in the song. That fade is coming way too quickly 😩
    Thank you Ryan 😄
Edit: I don't why, but every time I watch this MV, cluppo reminds me of Sumire Yoshida, the singer/guitarist of Silent Siren

Fantastic Ryan, absolutely spot on. Cluppo's uniqueness just continues to blossom in such amazing ways. Yeah...not gonna lie, I got a little choked up too. It seems here lately that several bands/musicians have found ways to hit a lot of emotional perspectives with me too. (Life, Ghost Love Score, etc.) As always, much respect and thanks for sharing your thoughts/comments brother! 🤘

I could never say which member of Band Maid is my favorite, because I admire each member for the talent each member brings to create the wonderful music that saved rock (for me). But, I will say Miku holds a special place in my heart for her creative lyrics and blending Japanese and English. I'm from Indy so I speak English, but I'm also fluent in French. So, I understand how hard it is to combine lyrics from two languages and make sense as well as playing with sounds like "Ai" that have different meanings in each language but still works in a wonderful way. As a bilingual speaker, I can tell you it is not easy. I think Miku understands English more than what most people may think. Plus, her ambition to create a rock band, learn guitar, and dominate not only Japan but international audiences is admirable. I've been a fan since around 2018, when I found them. They are close to my daughter ages. So, when I see how Miku, and Band Maid has progressed almost makes me feel like a proud father. So, even though they don't know ,I have unofficially adopted these 5 Japanese girls as my daughters.

Not a big fan of her other songs unfortunately, but I really liked this one! I think this song would be a huge hit if it was associated for a more popular anime. And I'm really happy that CLUPPO isn't a one time thing, now we just need BAND-MAIKO to release another album soon.

Finding it hard to separate,in my mind, Miku Kobato from Izumo no Okuni, ,the famous 17th century Japanese "shrine maiden" , also from the southern parts of Japan.
Okuni has a lovely statue in her honour---right across the road from the great kabuki theatre hall in Kyoto !
She brought a degree of peace and happiness to Kyoto in dire and turbulent times.----- How?-----by setting up her little stage on the dry riverbed and rescuing prostitutes and other women from the streets and teaching them to act and sing and dance and play music ........
-----------------------------and in the middle of the often-bloody chaos, she somehow charmed all around her......and just as an extra, she simultaneously invented KABUKI !!!!!!!!! (which was all-women !----not the present form which was ,later. stolen from the women of Japan by a petty emperor). But she brought us a new art that will never disappear.
Isn't Miku in just that mold?----I think we need a beautiful little statue to her, as well.

You should watch the anime closing that this song was written for. It gives the song a lot more context:
    th-cam.com/video/PztDR2TxDq4/w-d-xo.html
Also, the style of this song is called "City Pop". It was a style of J-pop that was popular back in the 80s. The style was very vocal focused with elements of jazz, disco and R&B.

0:22 ... I'm glad that you are self-aware & pointed that out, in where you stated you are checking out a music genre that you wouldn't listen to (or wouldn't have listened to), if it were not due to the influence of the musician you respect that is doing this genre & also prior the genre that this artist also does that attracted you to the artist in the first place. Confusing? I say this because this had already been said years ago in another fandom (that I also belong to), that these fans have stated that they would not have been listening to hiphop/rap before they started being a fan of this artist (group of artists) that use hiphop as part of their skillset & virtuosity. Now of course, this fandom I speak of (40-90+ million of us in the fanbase) would probably only really be listening to mostly the hiphop that only comes from these artists, in likely the same way you might only be listening primarily to cluppo's music & not anyone else's.

Hej Ryan . Many foreigner wonder that why Japanese musician`s mind , emotion , sense is cross to Europe (UK) , USA musician .
Around 1965~75 , there was big golden music and Movies age for UK , USA to the world . Same age , about 80 % of young Japanese people ,students listing those music from the radio .theater . Pop , rock , soul , juzz , classics ,movies songs , fusion etc , and Japanese songs . There was big big culture and civilizaional flood from UK,USA music culture to Japanese people I think . We looked up to your countrise and life styles.
In Akihabara Tokyo electricity tool shops city was grow much . AIWA, SONY , SANSUI , KENWOOD, PANASINICS, HITACHI,TOSHIBA ,MITSUBISI ets made stereo , speaker tools as Car , motercycle ,TOYOTA , HONDA , NISSAN , MAZDA , ISUZU , SUZUKI, DAIHATSU , KAWASAKI etc.
But Europian , USA people dose not know around another countrise people doing . They don`t need to know other countrise life untill internet will coming and spread around 2000s . I think only Japanese people could run after EU , USA mind.
      I saw live CCA , Deep Purple (4), Yngwie Malmsteen ( opening performance band for Deep Purple ) , T-Rex , YES (2) , Four Tops , Foreigner ,

, Paul McCartney , Led Zeppelin copy band ( Guiter : Japanese man ) , THe Beatles copy band
I like UK, USA rock music . But I think 90 % Japanese listner dose not understand what they singing in direct . But not nowadays ....
I was lucky that I live in Tokyo until 23rd. ( until 41 , I live in different abrord , Stockholm Sweden / I saw live in Stockholm Deep Purple , Roxette . I met Bjone & Benny ( ABBA) , Eurythmics at Japanese restaurant .
Japanese / ADACHI KUMI & Pangea (3) ( fusion band / She was most of tecnical guiter girl that time . She has been play with Orianthi Panagans in Japan ) , Perfume , Baby Metal , Band-Maid (7)
I don`t know why I like Band-Maid so much after they published " Alone " . I felt they can be in equal to world rock band . I couldn`t get ticket for Band-Maid that time 2016. But I could find someone had cancellation . So, I could get ticket . There was very smoll live holl ( about 200 people ) and all standing .
But Audience ( youger ) was very struggle , pushed, surfing mobb waver ,moshoved , rege with another during they playing . I never been experience like that live .
And some girls had injuryed . So , from that live , it will be forbit to surfing mobb for Band-Maid`s live .
