Honestly that legitimately warmed my heart to see that. Them getting shut down was so uncalled for and unfair. So this redemption really hits right in the feels.

Valve works on good will. Deadlock is an "open secret". It's trivially easy to get into, you can invite any of your friends (I'm in it so are my buddies). It's basically a public-but-not-really beta, like they did with Dota 2 in 2012. There's no NDA (duh), there's no EULA/ToS that requires you to zip it. They just tell you when first launch the game, "don't share footage please". Even if you do, they most likely won't care if you're just a random dude. But when a youtuber, or hell a JOURNALIST, starts sharing things they were asked not to, that's when Valve steps in and says "We don't want to work with you any more". No legal threats, no hard feelings. Similar thing happened with a Dota caster when he leaked Artifact. They just stopped working with him for official events.
I think it's clear that no one - the Verge journalists included - is blaming Valve for banning Sean Hollister. His reaction to being banned was just "Oh well." He's a journalist who added one article to the pile of articles, posts, and dozens of hours of gameplay videos revealing everything about the currently accessible form of the game. Why didn't anyone react this way before now? Because Hollister explicitly said he simply pressed escape on a non-legally-binding in-game pop-up? The backlash here is quite confusing.
Honestly, this really was pretty awesome. All the massive layoffs have been a real downer and this is actually a tiny bit of sunshine on the gray depressing cloudy day that has been most of last year and all of this year so far.

It also risks having major outlets not understand what they are looking at, and judging it as a final product. The sad thing is the game has been unofficially available using emulation running at 4K 60 for years and years and years now. So if Rockstar comes out and simply drops the switch / PS4 version with the ability to slightly crank up settings people will be very justifiably pissed. Though I keep trying to warn people not to get their hopes up with current Rockstar,come on now.

@abrenmam I'm not him, but as someone that is playtesting, I can say (without giving too much into because I'm a good scout lol) that it sits to me right in between with an tendency towards moba. I can say is EXTREMELY fun to me, which is surprising since the only time I played a moba was a single game of LoL where I got insulted like no tommorrow when i was just trying to learn the game. I guess it helps that the playtesting community is generally a pretty positive environment so far (and playing with a squad of friends)
EA is speedrinning the death of Battlefield. Open World? like that worked well in 2042. It's like two failed releases are not enough for them to understand most players just want a modernised battlefield 3
TBF BF has always either been large map shenanigans or glorious corridor clusterfooks. Best memories of 3 and 4 is both teams inexplicably dogpiling into a hallway. :P

a beta for a multiplayer game with thousands of people is probably network/server load testing. making sure rubber banding, latency etc are all kept in check under expected loads.
yeah I got access today. no clue who invited me and my friends (especially considering I am Australian and valve doesn't think we exist). In my head there is a very long spiderweb of friends that ended up landing on me. or they gave random steam deck owners access. no clue but I am absolutely exited, I am a massive valve stan lol.
Im excited to see Red Dead 1 make it to PC. Although I'd like to point out, because people seem to forget, besides the decent reviews from critics on the recent PS4/switch releases for a game that was true to the original, gamers decided to be asses gave it a horrible score/review because it had none of the mechanic/visual updates they just assumed would happen when a re-release was first rumored. Hopefully PC players dont expect anything more than the game delivering what it already was ... but im sure we'll see the modding community make their own quality of life and visual improvements for PC.
The issue is the PC community has been playing Red Dead for years using emulation. You can play it in 4K 60 FPS already so if the game doesn't do something significant (or at least noticeable) this release will be pretty pointless. But yes I do think people are building themselves up for a massive let down. You'd think they'd take that last release on PS4 and switch and understand what is coming but most likely they think the PC is different and special and we'll get something far better. Which at least if you know rock steady these days you should know better.
I mean, having thousands of players in a beta would be weird for any other game but I think it's realistic for a MOBA. You never know how players can break the game. Look at League of Legends for example. They released a champion called Smolder, a damage carry champ that builds full physical damage items. They released him to the live servers and for some time most efficient builds on him included tank and mage items mixed with ad, absolutely unexpected when champion was on the testing server
It doesn’t seem that confusing in my opinion. Even though the Deadlock player test is popular, Valve likely wants discussion about the game to remain insular for the time being. It totally makes sense to denoise discourse around the game by only allowing testers to discuss it with fellow testers.
On one hand I'd like to give them credit but then I remember that would be giving any credit to game urinalists which I will never, ever do. I'll give them a half-hearted condescending golf clap. That's the best I can do.
at first glance deadlock looked like yet another game but then i saw gameplay and they really are doing something different. im actually hyped for the game.

From what I've read Deadlock was not supposed to be avaliable to thousands of people, like 1/4 of current players should have access. But some genious started leaking contents of closed NDA beta and then leaked invites so Valve just stopped caring and opened closed beta beyond "friends and familiy" *I'm not sure this is real information tho*

On a scale from a more casual leaning tf2 to a more competitive leaning moba. Where is the game in your opinion
@abrenmam I'm not him, but as someone that is playtesting, I can say (without giving too much into because I'm a good scout lol) that it sits to me right in between with an tendency towards moba. I can say is EXTREMELY fun to me, which is surprising since the only time I played a moba was a single game of LoL where I got insulted like no tommorrow when i was just trying to learn the game.
I guess it helps that the playtesting community is generally a pretty positive environment so far (and playing with a squad of friends)

TBF BF has always either been large map shenanigans or glorious corridor clusterfooks. Best memories of 3 and 4 is both teams inexplicably dogpiling into a hallway. :P
It’s 3 if you include hardline. I’ve given up, they are gonna keep trying to reinvent the wheel with battlefield until the ip is actually un usable. I just hope it eventually gets sold off to some business that actually uses some common sense

In my perspective, it's actually great that valve tested with that many player! There is a huge Chance to get feedback and bug report... also server stress test
Having BF play like PlanetSide 2 would be pretty cool...for a little while
a beta for a multiplayer game with thousands of people is probably network/server load testing. making sure rubber banding, latency etc are all kept in check under expected loads.

yeah I got access today. no clue who invited me and my friends (especially considering I am Australian and valve doesn't think we exist).
In my head there is a very long spiderweb of friends that ended up landing on me. or they gave random steam deck owners access. no clue but I am absolutely exited, I am a massive valve stan lol.
Crazy that the unannounced Deadlock has more players than Concord, a AAA Sony release with a ton of astroturfing.
The Fallout London people have an exuse to take a lot of time to get updates out. Bethesda does not.

Im excited to see Red Dead 1 make it to PC. Although I'd like to point out, because people seem to forget, besides the decent reviews from critics on the recent PS4/switch releases for a game that was true to the original, gamers decided to be asses gave it a horrible score/review because it had none of the mechanic/visual updates they just assumed would happen when a re-release was first rumored. Hopefully PC players dont expect anything more than the game delivering what it already was ... but im sure we'll see the modding community make their own quality of life and visual improvements for PC.
The issue is the PC community has been playing Red Dead for years using emulation. You can play it in 4K 60 FPS already so if the game doesn't do something significant (or at least noticeable) this release will be pretty pointless. But yes I do think people are building themselves up for a massive let down. You'd think they'd take that last release on PS4 and switch and understand what is coming but most likely they think the PC is different and special and we'll get something far better. Which at least if you know rock steady these days you should know better.

I would be so keen for a PlanetSide 2 successor.
I mean, having thousands of players in a beta would be weird for any other game but I think it's realistic for a MOBA. You never know how players can break the game.
Look at League of Legends for example. They released a champion called Smolder, a damage carry champ that builds full physical damage items. They released him to the live servers and for some time most efficient builds on him included tank and mage items mixed with ad, absolutely unexpected when champion was on the testing server

It doesn’t seem that confusing in my opinion. Even though the Deadlock player test is popular, Valve likely wants discussion about the game to remain insular for the time being. It totally makes sense to denoise discourse around the game by only allowing testers to discuss it with fellow testers.
The gaming industry is clearly full of intrigue and controversies.

at first glance deadlock looked like yet another game but then i saw gameplay and they really are doing something different. im actually hyped for the game.

From what I've read Deadlock was not supposed to be avaliable to thousands of people, like 1/4 of current players should have access. But some genious started leaking contents of closed NDA beta and then leaked invites so Valve just stopped caring and opened closed beta beyond "friends and familiy"
