How a Traveling Indian Monk Changed Japanese History Forever

  • In the 8th century, a South Indian (Tamil) Buddhist monk named Bodhisena journeyed from Madurai to the Far East in an attempt to locate his spiritual mentor. He arrived in Imperial Nara, Japan and discovered a country on the brink of collapse: wracked by drought and a smallpox epidemic, facing an ongoing debt crisis, and struggling through political turmoil.
    Enjoy!
Some commenters have requested additional reading and sources:
    - "From Outcasts to Emperors: Shingon Ritsu and the Mañjuśrī Cult in Medieval Japan," by David Quinter (pg. 65+ for the transformation of Gyoki's public image as Manjusri)
    - "A Waka Anthology: Grasses of Remembrance" by Edwin A. Cranston (pg. 434 for the exchange between Gyoki and Bodhisena)

@@sangharramesh The Japanese might seem too stiff as a people, but the advantages of their work ethic and dedication is obvious to anyone who cares to look. We Indians also have such masters who dedicated themselves to an art or a craft and produced marvels never seen before or since by dedicating their whole lives to that one thing that makes them special. Whether it be poetry, music, art, architecture, medicine, philosophy, or even food. Some Indians are definitely certified masters of their crafts. But unlike the Japanese, We Indians can't boast that a lot of our people are seeking to excel at something. We tend to be far more laid back and lazy, and a majority of the population, especially today, would rather not travel the hard path to excellence if we don't have to. Sure, being lazy means being more ingenious to some degree, but overall, due to all the distractions of the modern world, we are less likely to have more people who dedicate themselves to something than we would have in the past.
But keep in mind, we have a far larger population than Japan, so overall we should still have a higher number of notable people than them. I just hope that more people will find something useful to do with their lives.

Coming back to your comment : Your claim that " Tamil was a language used for talking to each other" is completely wrong. Tamil had its own literature and Tamil people had their own grammar, poems and way of life derived from those literatures.
Quote from Wikipedia again with link :
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_language
" A recorded Tamil literature has been documented for over 2000 years.[15] The earliest period of Tamil literature, Sangam literature, is dated from ca. 300 BC - AD 300.[16][17] It has the oldest extant literature among Dravidian languages.[11] The earliest epigraphic records found on rock edicts and 'hero stones' date from around the 3rd century BC.[18][19] More than 55% of the epigraphical inscriptions (about 55,000) found by the Archaeological Survey of India are in the Tamil language.[20] Tamil language inscriptions written in Brahmi script have been discovered in Sri Lanka and on trade goods in Thailand and Egypt.[21][22] The two earliest manuscripts from India,[23][24] acknowledged and registered by the UNESCO Memory of the World register in 1997 and 2005, were written in Tamil.[25] "
Cholas did use Sanskrit to some extent but their main patronage was Tamil. It is during their time many of the great poets and their works in Tamil literature got developed. Some of the great tamil poets are Kalladanar, Kambar, Pugalandhi, Ottakoothar, Sekkilar, Avvaiyar, Thirutakkadevar. Literary styles like epics, parani, kovai, ula, kalambakam, pillaitamil and new works on grammar were famous during the chola period . Tamil was the medium of education for the masses.
      source : www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Chola_Dynasty
If your comment is based on the premises that "tamil was a language used for talking to each other", I can not agree with your comment. You are claiming things without knowing the history of Tamil.
If you feel any of sources that I shared does not hold ground, Please feel free to share your sources. Happy to see them and change my opinion.

There aren't any universal dates (or, at least there shouldn't be any) for world history when ancient, antique, or classical times began and when the period after that began. It was just dharma and adharma, who you worship or did not worship at all never justified one's wrong actions.
The reason most(if not all people) who have undergone western education fail to understand what Hinduism or Buddhism is is because they aren't relegions and to Westerners this is indigestible.
In Hinduism, Buddhism, sikkhism and jainism alike dharma and karma are the basis. You need not worship anyone or anything and still can be a hindu, you can believe there is not God and still be a hindu, you can believe that God is formless and still be a hindu.

      Brother,
We are discussing the similarities in philosophy of Hinduism and Buddhism, not history of people from "Hindu" background killing people from "Buddhist" background.
There are several philosophies in Sanatan Dharm. Even atheism is a concept written in some books. Unlike other religions, Hinduism never explained the exact name and location of God. Only made some suggestions.
Gods never say they are gods. We worship them for their contribution. Example, we worship trees, sun and rivers for their contribution to our nature. Imagine our e6 without them.
Hindus worship Sai Baba who is a Muslim by religion, because of his help to the society.
I'm sure Buddha, Krishna, Jesus and Allah would agree on every aspect they (would have) discussed among themselves. Us humans think they are different.

I always wondered about the connections between India and Japan. Obviously Buddhism made it's way through China and Korea to Japan but there's also a lot of other connections. Even in Shinto certain kami such as Inari were given mounts to ride on to put them more in the style of Hindu gods. Why did the Shinto elite feel the need to make such a connection to a foreign religion when Shinto often was either merged with buddhism or kept separate as a uniquely Japanese religion.

    • @nikhilsharma26500

not only that, pretty much like Hinduism, followers of Shintoism too believe that God resides within us and in nature. Shintoism has this unique concept of Tori gates that are considered sacred and you have to bow down before entering it while in Hinduism you have a gate at the beginning of the temple with a bell attached to it and you have to ring the bell and then either bow down or greet the god before entering. There are so many similarities between Japanese and Indian cultures but the disconnect between Indian and Japanese people really makes me sad.

@eldarmario presario The Eastern world has been interacting with each other for thousands and thousands of years, long before the Europeans arrived in Asia. Indian cultural influences on Japanese culture came via Chinese and Korean influence on Japan. These ideas of "exoticness/mysteriousness" may have existed in the early days but through constant interaction, that mysterious nature wouldn't have existed. Japan itself has its own concept of "Asia" known as "Sangoku" during the ancient days which placed China (Kara), India (Tenjiku) and Japan (Honshu) as the three main civilisations in eastern/southern Asia.
Also, not to be pedantic but if we go back all the way to the pleistocene, then we'll see that darker skinned East Eurasian groups emerged in Asia and spread south into India, the rest of South Asia and Southeast Asia (providing part of the ancestry that makes up the genetic makeup of modern-day South and Southeast Asians). These groups were known as the Ancient Ancestral South Indians, Hoabinhians and Negritos and all came from the same clade. There was also another group that emerged from the same clade that these darker skinned groups came from. They were an ancient ancestor to the Jomon (a comparatively dark skinned group who settled in Japan and Siberia) who intermixed with the lighter skinned East Asian looking Yayoi from the mainland to produce modern-day Japanese people.

Varnashtrama dharma is mere divison of labor and it’s not based on birth instead it’s based on ones inclination and passion in their life. A person who wants to be a soldier will be a Kshatriya, a person who wants to do business will be Vysya, a person who is in the position of teaching will be a Brahmin and a person who works for other will be a shudra and none of this come by birth.
There is a human fallacy and discrimination which creeped into the society similar to any other society as is human nature, to blame it on the culture is highly incorrect it’s like saying if someone in a particular culture steals then the entire culture supports stealing.
Second Adhishankara brough back Adveitha and went for debates with all the Buddhist scholars and in the debate whoever loses will come to the other side, and that brought back advaitha in the land and Buddhism is also a part sanarthana dharma and it’s not considered as a separate religion. This Abrahmic mindset of exclusivity was not part of the culture, believers and non believers had every right in the society debating and questioning was completely allowed.

Brahmanism placed much emphasis on ritual bathing, animal sacrifice, and severe self-abnegation as ways to achieve spiritual liberation. Gautama Buddha and his Middle Path diverged on all three points.
He believed that morality in thought and deed were the proper ways to become purified, not ritual bathing. Animal sacrifice was contrary to the principle of harming no living being, and that it is better to sacrifice the (non-existent) self and practice generosity. Self-abnegation, which the Buddha practiced for six years before attaining nirvana, merely weakens the mind and body. He recommended the Middle Path of neither excess nor asceticism as the optimal route to liberation.
Brahmanism is not just a religion, but a social and economic system that separates people into different classes and designates their roles accordingly. Caste, race and gender are considered eternal and unchanging. Only a select group of individuals can ever hope to achieve liberation from samsara, because in Brahmanistic belief their high status was earned in a past life. Women and the underclasses are disenfranchised because of wrongs committed in past lives, and there is little hope for advancement.
Gautama Buddha emphatically and unequivocally disagreed with this system. He believed that unchanging identities does not exist, and therefore anyone may achieve nirvana. One's fate is not determined by past lives but through perseverance and moral rectitude in the current one. He welcomed all people into his following as equals. This revolutionary policy attracted brahmins and outcasts alike from all corners of northern India and beyond. It threatened the very foundations of Brahmanism.""

In Bharath the society is fundamentally plural and everyone had and have complete freedom to seek their own path and that’s the reason even till today there are som many sects Saiviam, Vainavam, Shaktham, Gaumarakam, Ganapathyam, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism all thrived and no one persecuted each other and said my way is the right way and you are wrong.
The society is completely liberal and spirituality is considered as an endeavor or pursuit of an individual and that’s why there is no concept of conversion.
You mr Abrahmised Buddhism is made up to ape Islam and Christianity which grew by saying my way or the highway and calling non believers as Satan or Khafirs.
You have been taught with the same mindset and that’s why you generalize all Brahmins as bad all other beliefs are bad.
There are good and bad people in every belief and every country you stereotyping a particular set of people is just pure hatred!
Varnashtrama dharma is what I explained you can ignore my explanation by simply laughing at it because you don’t want to understand the truth and argue that Buddhism or Buddha is right! This attitude will not take you any close to spiritual seeking!! Accepting others and their thoughts is the first step!!
You are very far from it and you won’t understand any of this, you are going to keep spreading hatred and spew venom! This hate will do enough damage to you no one has to do it!!
      Good luck !
