Thank you for watching. Famous Grave - Boris Karloff - Frankenstein's Monster
Unusual Things, I aim to look at Gravestones of celebrities and people that lived a different life and also look into anything unusual. Today I visit the Gravestone of William Henry Pratt, Boris Karloff.
William Henry Pratt (23 November 1887 - 2 February 1969), better known by his stage name Boris Karloff was an English actor[2] who starred as Frankenstein's monster in the horror film Frankenstein (1931), which established him as a horror icon. He reprised the role in Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939). Karloff also appeared as Imhotep in The Mummy (1932), and voiced the Grinch, as well as narrated the animated television special of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966), which won him a Grammy Award.

A very telling story about him was from when he was living in a village called Liphook in Hampshire in the 60s, and the local kids wanted some apples out of his tree. Whilst they were busy smashing at the tree to get the fruit out, he suddenly appeared wanting to know what they were doing. They all roundly scattered associating him with Frankenstein's monster a wee bit too much. Later on he saw the kids, and sat down on the grass with them presenting them with some apples as a gift and reasoning with them, basically saying that if they wanted some fruit all they had to do was ask. A true gentle-man if ever there was one.

It has been 91 plus years when Boris Karloff first played the Monster and no one, not one actor can touch his interpretation. You felt genuine pity and empathy for the monster. Even though in some scenes in the Son of Frankenstein they referred to the creature as doing brutal things for no apparent reason (which I think was foolish to imply. The monster tearing off a childs arm... No..). His version of the Monster, is the Monster. An ICON forever still.

first watched Frankenstein as a child, I always felt so sorry for the monster. It was only as I got older that I realised my empathy was because of his incredible acting.

My God, who does not remember Boris Karloff, in Frankenstein. A cult figure!!
In the 1940 he dressed as Santa for Christmas time, and visit disabled children in Hospital to give out presents. I believe his daughter Sara is still alive and a Filmmaker I remember that she had a great-great aunt and it was Anna Leonowens , a historical role model for Anna and the King.
Thanks for sharing your visit to say Hello to Boris Karloff.
Pity that Christopher Lee has no Gravesite I would have loved to see his Grave. May he rest in peace.

I'm a Christopher Lee fanatic. Have been since I was a kid (I'm 42 now). Since Lee's death, I've been combing the internet for a gravesite. No such luck. I wonder why this is? Peter Cushing has no grave either. If anybody knows anything, please comment.

That's a wonderfully humble grave for such a hugely famous person. I'm a big fan of his movies, and have tried to watch as many as possible - and here's the thing - he's really great in all of them. Even the odder ones, like 'The Invisible Ray' (1936); 'Frankenstein: 1970' (1958); 'Die, Monster, Die' (1965), and 'The Sorcerers' (1967).
Pleasingly, like a lot of horror film actors, Boris Karloff was known to be a really nice man, a proper gentleman.
Thank you for sharing this video. TH-cam's algorithm only steered me here yesterday, so it's a bit belated. My heart goes out to the people you met who had lost their child, too. Very respectful mention you gave. Nice to see in this day and age.
Is there any chance of visiting the gravesite of possibly the nicest horror film star of all? I'm referring of course, to Peter Cushing, someone of whom I have never heard, or read a bad word said.
    Thank you again.

Thanks for visiting Karloff, for those of us who aren’t able to!
    BTW…
It seems that Boris actually did play the Monster for a lost cameo/dream sequence in the Danny Kaye flick, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”! Karloff is definitely fantastic in the role of, “Dr. Hugo Hollingshead”, here!
It seems that there are color photos out there, of a definitely “Frankensteined” Boris, with legendary makeup artist, Jack Pierce, taken from this production, but sadly… The scene/footage seems to be gone.
He also showed up at public events, in full Monster regalia, & even in an episode of “Route 66”! (With Peter Lorre, & Lon (Creighton) Chaney Jr.!
    Thanks again!
(Apologies if anyone else has already stated any of what I commented here.)

One of my favorite Karloff movies was one of his last ones...Targets, a crime drama directed by Peter Bogdonovich. Karloff plays a horror movie icon who is retiring from Hollywood because he believes real life has more horror than anything he ever did in movies. Karloff played the role masterfully (especially given his physical condition by then. I think he died the year after the movie came out).

Obviously most famous for his horror roles but actually a good all round film and stage actor (check out his performance as a soldier having a nervous breakdown in the 1934 John Ford film 'The Lost Patrol') with a long career. He was certainly an interesting man. He was a founding member of the Hollywood Cricket Club, he was a second (maybe third?) cousin to Quentin Crisp, he had dark skin because his mother was Indian (which obviously didn't come over in black and white films) and I believe his father's sister was Anna Leonowens (famously played in the film The King and I by Deborah Kerr). He gave a young Jack Nicholson many tips on the acting profession, he spoke immaculately and fell into acting because he didn't want to be a civil servant like his brothers were and was Christopher Lee's neighbour at one point. I met his daughter, Sara, at an event a few years back to mark what would have been his 125th birthday and she said that although he made his name in Hollywood, it was his wish to see out his life in England and when he was offered the chance to make the 'Colonel March of Scotland Yard' series for ITV in the mid 1950s, it gave him the perfect excuse to move back to the UK and the majority of his work from then on was filmed in the UK due to ill health. You won't find a bad word about him by any of his acting peers. David Niven, Cary Grant etc all held him in the highest regard as a person and a gentleman. So basically, he was a genuine legend in so many ways.

wow, my work town, will go and visit during next lunchbreak.
Thanks for the Midhurst mention, it may explain how he ended up in Guildford.
interesting that he is "allowed" a plaque purely in his stage name

Nobody’s done a better Frankenstein’s monster, not even Robert de Niro. Those old horror films were the best, probably because I watched them as a kid, don’t think many have frightened me as much since. Long way from Hollywood. Great one, thanks Paul.

Slightly random side note for horror fans, Guildford Catholic Cathedral, a couple of miles away, was used as a location for the original The Omen.

    Great video, new subscriber!
I grew up in a place called Liphook in Hampshire, Boris used to live in a house called roundabout cottage very near in Bramshott. We would often walk down there as kids, and we found his old house fascinating!
It was often said it was coffin shaped because of the joining roads that encased it’s walls… There is also a small stone head on one of the walls and we always used to say it was him! Bramshott is one of the most haunted places in Hampshire it’s well worth a visit, has a great little church and graveyard, and beautiful walks.
