I retrained from banking at the age of 42 through LSB. 4 years on i absolutely love my job but bloody hell like M says it’s hard work but so rewarding 👊🏻
Cole the_barber Hey, I'm 33 and looking for a career change and was looking at training at the LSB. From your experience would I be able to complete the NVQ level 2&3 and come out and open my own shop and start cutting hair?
Same situation. I worked as a Product designer for years, but after redundancy and the industry turning almost 💯 digital I want something creative that pays ok. I'm 43 now and off to an open day at London School of Barbering
Wow. I’ve never watched a video on TH-cam that’s applied to me so well. I absolutely love the fact that you guys uploaded this, it really helped me set my mind on this career. I actually am 18 and want to begin barbering, I’m just trying to save up for the course itself. I really appreciate this video, thanks for uploading guys.
I’m not a barber, but I am a licensed hair stylist. I am obsessed with watching your videos! So much talent! I’ve learned a lot from y’all! Love all you guys!
Mahesh! At age 47, I’ve just begun my journey into the barbering world. I’ve taken a few classes on an evening course and really enjoyed it. I’ve also volunteered my sweeping and chatting services for work experience in my favourite barbershop. Excellent advice, and I’m happy to say I’m loving my new direction in life. Much respect!
Great advice! I was taught by my local barber. I just went in and helped out for 3 or 4 days a week for free, so she could teach me. I was 28yr old makeup artist wanting to add a skill under my belt. 4 years later, I mainly work as a barber and loving it. Still in the same shop! We're the best barber shop in Lewes ;)
Currently only my last month in my Barbering course. Absolutely loving it so far, I have so much to learn still but that’s what makes this industry so great, you must constantly learn and upskill or you’ll fall behind. Im 24, so for anyone thinking they are too old to start, read this and go apply for the course! You won’t regret it.
I know you posted this a year ago. I'm recently thinking of becoming a barber however I've never cut hair before but i have watched a lot of videos and research and it seems pretty interesting and cool as a job that I think I can develop a passion for. How did you know barbering was for you?
I’m in my second semester of Barbering school, and I would suggest going to school over anything else. I had never held clippers, or shears a day in my life. And now, I’m cutting 8 heads every 4 days and the number keeps rising. It’s an awesome industry to be a part of, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
thank you, i am looking to pull the trigger on a career change. as a 'mature' person who has already been in one industry for 10 years i am nervous about the time/financial and risks of such a change. This has been a short and sweet video that has given me great comfort. Thanks
Another great video. It took a long time for me to get the nerve to go to barbering school. I’ve got many friends that are barbers and they pushed me to go. I’ve always been in love with the culture and so far am happy I did.
I'm a 28 year old mechanic debating a career change. My partner of 10 years is a hairdresser, I'd like to be able to have a family run, unisex salon. Thanks for your video it was very eye opening.
solid advise! i'm a beginner doing all round cutting, men and woman. good to know and learn both. but it is indeed hard work physically. been in school for 2 years, now in a salon for half a year. learning everyday. growing more towards men tho than woman. but i'm glad i know how to cut/dry/colour both genders. hard work but rewarding.
I think a good example of the difference between watching someone give a hair cut and actually doing it yourself is the video of Carlos giving the barber a haircut. Even though he had the help of the barber with him and has watched hundreds of haircuts he still found it way harder than he thought it would be
Before you even investigate courses, you need to ask yourself if you have the passion within to undertake this honoured profession. Just my two cents. Peace and Love
This has been something I have been considering for a while, becoming more and more passionate about it, I have applied to do a course and will be going in to speak to the owner of my local barbershop tomorrow in order to gauge his thoughts and interest on taking me on unpaid for a few days a month!
Love this channel so much, thanks for making these videos. I've been cutting hair since I was 12, I'm 22 now but recently 4 months ago, on April 14th 2017 i decided to take on barbering serious and took barber courses. I love being a barber. Shout out to all the barbers, love from Mexico to all my barber mates
I'm flying over to Scotland from Australia to start my SVQ barbering course in may at the Scottish barber school in Glasgow, my passion for barbering burns like fire and I absolutely love it, I'll make a great barber trust me on that!
My barber says he does 12 cuts a day at $20 a piece. If he got a $5 dollar tip per cut he could make 75k a year. That's 15k a year more than me. As far as the working for free thing goes, i think you're spot on. Sure you may not be making money but a mentorship is priceless.
My health insurance is amazing. $15 copays. You certainly have a point. I think mesh was talking about interning as a younger person. Here in the states someone can stay under their parents insurance until they're 26, if you haven't figured it out by 26 you're probably not going to figure it out at all. Certainly you would have less to lose.
Great advice, I'm 27 looking to get into barbering. I'm enrolling in a college course and also working part time. I would have the time to work with a barber who i know just helping out but learning too. Will definitely be taking a look at your videos when I start my course!
Mahesh, your really seem like such a great guy with all the knowledge, advice and direction you give of yourself. You seem like a person that anyone would honored to be your friend. I have enjoyed the many BeardBrand videos as I have been able to take away something from each video. I have just to say Thank You!
Hey guys, thank you so much for videos like this. Since a long time Im totally interested in the barber business. I would LOVE to cut hair since Im a child. Now Im 28 years old and a digital graphic designer. Since almost a year Im thinking about changing my career and go to hair dressing/barber. Its sooo hard over here in germany - I would love to learn the business ONLY in a shop by real barbers/hair dressers. Sadly thats not possible over here. Sadly I only find UK Barber Schools which cost a lot of money and gives me no guarantee, that I can use this skills in germany. Sadly. Would love to work for some years in the shop over there in the UK, but hard to find as a german. Thank you for all the inspiration, tipps, tricks and help! Keep up the good work! You guys rock! Cheers!
I apprenticed in a shop to eventually be put on the schedule two days a week. It took about a year to get to the schedule while keeping up with my full-time office job. My main struggle is that the Barber trade is lumped in with hairdressing. So unless you are able to pass the hairdressing test...You cannot be licensed. I liked what Mahesh said about the hair school and barber school being beneficial because the scissor work is something that I am trying to get better at myself but it makes no sense that I would have to pass a colour or perm test to work at as a barber. Because of this regulation though, I feel like the apprentice path is maybe frowned upon because licensed barbers have such advanced skills in general (whether they use them daily or not). It is something that I am working on though and I try and branch out and watch everyone that I can. Networking in this industry cannot be understated. Great video and sorry for the rambling comment.
Jonathan Scheer I have not yet made the leap. I’m 46 years old, have a good job and am just exploring the possibility of doing something new. Best of luck to you in your career.
Thanks for the advice. I'll be heading into barbering training hopefully next year, so pumped for it. On another note, I live in a small town with like 8 hairdresser/barbershops. I'm not super picky, but they all seem very average. Should I look further to volunteer somewhere else more classy??
Mahesh Hayward that's true. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. In this country unfortunately you don't need a licence to be a barber, so it's common people with little experience are working there, often foreigners. Hopefully I can find something/someone quality
I think this type of approach can work for a lot of industries! I know this is specifically for barbering but Im thinking about taking this type of approach into the guitar industry! Maybe finding a local guitar shop and asking the owner or tech if I could do intern work for free in exchange for a tiny bit of education!
Can I just say, as you mentioned if you can do barbering and hairdressing at the same is good, Indeed you learn more but, I did a course that had both and to be honest I didn’t enjoy it as much because I didn’t like hairdressing and I only liked barbering, also what I realised is that the course most likely will not be 50-50, one will get more attention than the other and normally it’s more hairdressing
I have 3 boys in my house that are too young to care, so, practice-practice-practice. :D My greatest burden is weak (no better description) clippers that leave way too much hair un-cut with each pass. Is there a base level clipper that you would not go "lesser than" for good cuts?.. thanks for the help!
Here where i live in Doncaster (South Yorkshire) the barbering education is absolutely terrible. After being at college for 3 months i found i was regularly teaching my lessons as i was the only pupil who was actually working in a shop at the time. My course tutor was a hairdresser and was clueless about barbering. I pretty much learnt all my skills myself through youtube videos and experimenting. A few years on im now going back to college as an educator and im well established in my home town with my own barbershop, coffee shop and lounge. From what i see from the education system is they will happily take your money and print out a certificate after a year whether your skilled or not. No one seems to care if your up to standard aslong as the moneys flowing in. Kids will be better off in my opinion saving money and learning off the pro's from TH-cam. Im offering day courses as of next month for this very reason.
hello from ireland . i found it helpful the thing is . im 58 unemployed from the hospitality industry and looking for a career change, i wonder if a career as a barber would be too late at my age?? is there much age discrimation in this field?? i would appreciate your honest opinion if i would be wasting my time just let me know as i do have other ideas
Im 17 and I have never done barbering before, yesterday I enrolled on a level 2 course in barbering. In your opinion will this course be a good starting point and do you think that it would teach me enough? (the course can progress to level 3 once the level 2 has been completed)
Mahesh, What are your thoughts on courses that are offered by the London School of Barbering who offer 9 week courses to train as a barber for around £3,800?
TotalXIgnition Hello, I haven’t been to the place myself, but two of the lads that worked or are working at the shop did the coarse. They came away ready to work, a little slow BUT the work was good. I would say they give a good standard of training.
Hi there. I'm 33 and looking at a career change. Due to mortgage and having 3 kids I can't afford work for free etc. In your opinion would I be able to do the NVQ level 2&3 at the London School of Barbering and be able to come straight out and start work competently enough to open my own shop and start cutting hair?
Great information Mahesh, I would love to become a barber? But I have things going against me, for instance No1, you was saying about keeping yourself fit,? Well I had a car accident quite a few years ago and I am in a lot off pain. So that's a strike against me, and my age, I'm 48 early next month.
Oh. I'm in Texas and I've wanted to be a barber, but the nearest school i know of is 2 hours away, $400 a month, a $1250 down payment, and it's a year long class. I've been wondering if it would be smarter to just get a cosmetology license instead. It would be easier to get because every college offers it, but i wouldn't be a barber. Decisions decisions. Maybe i should just move to uk
Captain McHardseed the things we want aren’t always the easiest. I left Home at 18 and didn’t finish my Hairdressing Training till I was 20. I was living on £33 a week and had housing benefits, only affording noddles and cheapest foods. BUT! It was my passion, and that kept me going. Be brave brother, don’t have regrets. 🙏🏻
Mahesh Hayward i feel you and agree. I ran away at 16 and was a traveler for a long time. I'm a dad now and trying to settle down and find reliable legal work. Back in highschool i wanted to be a hairdresser when i was going through my emo phase. Barbering really does interest me more than other careers currently though. I want to own my own shop one day. I just don't like the idea of working for people. I will for my family, but I will work for myself again eventually.
I'm 28 years old and I dont have any experience (barber), here where I live people keep saying I'm too old for learning this job, is it true? 28 is too late for becoming a barber?

I would like to become a barber but I live in Turkey and I am not sure women can become barbers here. They won't even cut my hair here so I cut it myself. How would I become a barber in Turkey?
beardbrand videos don't teach anything they are there for marketing and entertainment purposes if you want to watch videos watch full tutorials that takes you step by step
Beardbrand you shouldn’t just expect someone to work 3/4/5 days for free even if it’s for their education because that means they’ll have to give up more time to get a payed job as well as their college on top of their voluntary work. “Give a little and gain a little” the saying goes.
I retrained from banking at the age of 42 through LSB. 4 years on i absolutely love my job but bloody hell like M says it’s hard work but so rewarding 👊🏻

Beardbrand you shouldn’t just expect someone to work 3/4/5 days for free even if it’s for their education because that means they’ll have to give up more time to get a payed job as well as their college on top of their voluntary work. “Give a little and gain a little” the saying goes.
