I recently 3D-printed myself a Piper J3. The build itself was really fun, it just doesn't fly super well lol
Was that the lab print one? I’ve just gotten a roll of LW filament and I’m trying to find the best first plane to print, the cub looks nice but if it flies horribly I’d probably steer away from that one.
@@deserting8710 It also was my first plane that I printed. I'd say go for it! I learned a LOT whilst building it, and you can definitely have some fun with it in the air too. Just don't expect to do any aerobatics with it, but that's not what it's built for anyways haha
@@rayxa8986 I guess that sounds nice! It’s just that LW filment is expensive so I want to make sure I get the most out of it 😅 I’ve heard it didn’t take much material however so I guess it would be worth just to get into the process of it, thanks!

I’d recommend Eclipson. Their models fly very well and have been reviewed a number of times on the FliteTest TH-cam channel.

I’ve built a short lived family of asymmetrical aircraft before. It turns out to be way easier than you’d think.
All I had to do was make sure the same amount of wing area was on either side of thrust line. Its a fun way to get a very strange plane
What about the tail? Does extra drag at one side create any problems?
@@GrimFaceHunter nope! It helps that at RC scale its really minuscule drag. Like nothing special has to be done for the tail to make it work, but I did do an asymmetric tailplane for aesthetics. That route can make it tricky to make the h stab strong tho
There's this one guy at my club who is always there and is an absolute wizard with balsa, he's built 6 ornithopters in the past from scratch, as well as a working VTOL Harrier model, the one thing that perplexes me with ornithopters is how they turn with the constantly changing dihedral, I might send you guys a video of his ornithopter flying in the discord the next time I go to the club.
Why not post the video on TH-cam so we can all see it?
Personally, I'd love to see these ornithopters.

I've seen a great 3d Pilot fly a one wing (he had broken the other earlier) with no mods brilliantly for 5-6 minutes going round gates and through a tunnel.
This is literally what model aviation IS ALL ABOUT!!!
The 'look what else can work' stage usually signifies that the core idea has been perfected. I refuse to believe that is true in RC. As long as a one wheel touch-an-go can be made even straighter, I'm in. Thanks for videos that give us yet another reason to love weekends!

Always entertaining. You forget about some of this weird stuff. Next one should include hydro-planes. They were around in the early 2000 when flat Depron 3d planes were super popular. Looked like a hydroplane boat that could skim across land and water or fly. They looked like fun. I have a old Graupner kit I will now have to assemble,with an old AXI motor of course! lol. I made a flying stand-up Jetski. It was one of the hardest things for me to get to fly. Mostly because it had a big dude standing on it acting like a huge vertical stabilizer. I had to put a shark fin lifevest for rudder control. Eventually, after a few weeks of trial and error, it looked like a real standup jetski flying through the air. You couldn't put any wings on it as it would ruin the look. The Jetski hull was the main wing but still had the rounded sides and nose like the real thing. I think I still have a video on my channel. It was 9 years ago. I should make another and send it to you to fly. It would also hover. Or maybe challenge you guys to build one. I used pink foam and foam board.

My GoGo Bird Eagle Ornithopter does fly excellent and has had not mechanical issues in the last year. The larger pterodactyl was junk, broke wing rods and gears stripped easily.

Another great video guys. Love the idea of FPV combat. We are considering doing some 3D printed planes this winter, but we will see if that comes to fruition. Also, Think Flight did end up moving to an RC Ekranoplan that was pretty awesome.Definitely some cool stuff to think about.
update info on 3d print, using LW PLA, is the same weight or lighter than epo.

From what I’ve seen and heard (not personal experience), 3D planes aren’t really effective and don’t fly well when it comes to the smaller normal-scale planes, I mean sure a giant scale Airliner is fine because the weight is more evenly distributable, but weight on a little park-flyer size will definitely add up. Nice video - Lucas ❤

and because I have a large field next to my house and it will make it easier to just go out and trow than in a citi where you need to go a long way into a open place

what about 'bird combat'
Back in the early 2000's I developed a series of small UAV's, autopilots and telemetry downlinks. On one occasion while testing one of our downlinks we had our enclosed command and control trailer set up to receive the data from the test aircraft. The data that was sent back was speed, altitude, direction of flight, bearing to a waypoint along with an attitude indicator for Roll, Pitch and Yaw and a moving map display. All of this was displayed on a computer in the command and control trailer. The way that we tested the system was by having one pilot hand fly the test aircraft with an RC transmitter outside of the trailer while a 2nd pilot watched the receive data that was displayed on the computer screen in the trailer. After we determined that the downlink was working correctly I connected a 2nd RC transmitter using a training cable to the first transmitter. I took the 2nd transmitter in the trailer and sat at the computer console while the first pilot flew the aircraft after I was in place I had the outside pilot transfer control of the aircraft over to me and I flew the aircraft for 14 minutes. We did have a stability augmentation system on the test aircraft that made it VERY STABLE and VERY EASY to fly. Those days were a lot of FUN!!!
