+JamesPlaysGames95 It's cos this was made in the and first aired in the US... Cos of some technical stuff about frame rates with NTSC and PAL broadcasts, we (the UK) got the PAL speedup version of the TVM, which runs about 4% faster than the actual original movie. It doesn't notice visually, but it always has the effect of giving people slightly more helium-esque voices.
At the time, Paul was a young man in his 30's when he played the doctor in this movie. When he came back for that Night of the Doctor episode, he was a middle aged man in his 50's. Men's voices can sometimes get deeper or gruffier when they get older.
@Stefano Pavone Maybe that's why he can't handle only having one heart working? It also means only one lung is really working fully and the other is getting little to no air.
@@johannahyde-parker8422Not really. A person can have two hearts, in fact, there’s evidence to suggest that we all have had two hearts when we were fetuses, but they merged into one later on in our development. Coming back from the death is significantly harder to believe than someone having two hearts, which is rare, but not Impossible.
Grace Holloway was the 1st medical doctor to use a stethoscope on The Doctor & hear both his hearts since Harry Sullivan after entering his 4th incarnation.
The difference between this and the "physician, heal thyself" scene is incredible. You can't just try to turn Doctor Who into Four Weddings And A Funeral and expect it to work.
The greatest thing RTD did when bringing back Doctor Who was consider this film and by extension This incarnation of The Doctor canon. He could have started the Nu series with Chris as the 8th Doctor, but didn't.
One of the biggest problems I have with current "Doctor Who" is that, due to rights issues, Grace has never been mentioned, except for a couple of appearances in the comics in "Doctor Who Magazine". They definitely should've made some arrangement for her to at least be mentioned; she's too good a character to be unpersoned.
Can someone please explain why the 8th Doctor has not returned in a mini series? The mini ep. Does not count since it was used to use the War Doctor. Paul Mcgann is a great actor, us fans should get a 4-6 part mini series since the 12th Doctor won't be back till next year.
+William Medina The BBC can't afford it, McGann's really busy, it's unfair on Capaldi to go against another Doctor, and the 8th Doctor is only massively popular with hardcore fans, not the casual audience. They should definitely bring him back in a multi doctor story with Capaldi though...
yes..do it. Fans have produced works that have been made. Nothing to loose, everything to gain. Starving artists and Dr.Who pretty much run together..if you get my drift :)
@d Matt Smith (the 11 doctor) was the last one, because he was the 13th incarnation. Well, at last was supposed to be. Don't want to spoil the story for you tho.
The Daleks say the genesis ark was "TIMELORD TECHNOLOGY" and "TIMELORD SCIENCE".... Referring to the transcendental property of the prison. Also, Rassilon invented regenerations, didn't he? (
Except for that nonsense about the 8th Doctor claiming he was half-human, I thought McGann was marvelous in this movie and the Day of the Doctor prequel. Yes, the audios are awesome but it was a real missed opportunity not giving McGann more screen time as the 8th Doctor.
***** Uhm. Not true.... the boy was the 1st Doctor. They pretty much confirmed that the 1st Doctor is the first Doctor.A Time Lord can regenerate 12 times meaning 13 lives as stated in "The Deadly Assassin","Doctor Who" and "The Time Of The Doctor". Also stated in "The Time Of The Doctor" was that the 10th Doctor's meta-crisis regeneration is a regeneration, that's why 11th is the 13th one. CLARA: But you don't die. You change. You pop right back up with a new face. DOCTOR: No, not for ever. I can change twelve times. Thirteen versions of me. Thirteen silly Doctors. CLARA: Okay, so you're number eleven, so DOCTOR: Ha. Since I saw this film as a little boy (probs like 15 years ago), he has been my favourite doctor. Always felt weird to say considering how little screen time he has makes it a hard sell to the fav Doctor debate but every second of screen time he has is golden. Maybe I’m just a McGann fan as he’s also great in Withnail and I
1:01 the dubbing of this line gets me every time 😆 You can see he mouths ‘12 lives’ but they had to redub it because it 12 regenerations… 13 lives… well before the Timesless Child storyline. And I can still remember as a kid seeing the version where he says ‘12’, but I can’t seem to find that version 🤔
@@Jimmy_D_82 Yes.. and... where did I disagree with you? I think you missed the point of what I said entirely. I didn't say anything about the dubbing. I was making a point about Doctor Who in general. The Doctor had 13 lives. After that...
@@Roper122 okay, but I think you missed my point entirely then. You said you didn’t say anything about the dubbing… buuut my post is about the dubbing. So why are you commenting on my post if you aren’t talking about the dubbing? That was the whole point of my comment.
They say when a doctor leaves they shouldnt be back unless its a special where they appear to the present doctor, but I wonder if they ever considered bringing back the same actor for the doctor to play a new incarnation...yet the same. Like...what if the doctor regenerated into paul mcgann again. It might be possible, and if the curator really is the doctor's old retired self, then that further proves the fact he can have the same face again. So I say...why not make Paul McGann the doctor again? Let him shine a little more, he might be the 8th doctor, but he could also be the 13th doctor
Based on what we've seen with Romana, it is possible that The Doctor can choose his new appearance (and The Tenth Doctor chose to keep the same face). However, it is likely that he rarely has the time to do so (it seems to often be a case of "regenerate now or never").
The Tenth doctor had a receptacle to send the rest of the regeneration energy so that he didn't change. Somehow it didn't count as a regeneration or he couldn't have become 11
@@Bartimayus It does count as a regeneration, according to what Matt Smith's 11th Doctor said. It doesn't count towards the official numbering. Why tho? Ten regenerated into the very same Doctor, no change in appearance or personality, so why counting him twice?
@@Bartimayus it did count as a regeneration because in the day of the doctor, the time lords gave him a whole new cycle because he'd exhausted his old one (11 numbered doctors + ten's first regeneration + war doctor = 13 lives)
1:15 "I'm not a child, don't talk to me like a child, only children believe that crap" feels 90s as hell and also not how a doctor should talk to someone they think is having a mental crisis.
Louis Kendall sadly I disagree. This is by no means the worst movie ever. The eighth doctor puts on a mostly enjoyable performance and the set of the TARDIS was cool. But the plotline was weak, the characters underdeveloped, and the greatest crime. Casting an American in the role of one of Britain's best and most iconic TV villains
MissyQueenofEvil tbf with doctor whos state back then it was either this or nothing. and maybe without the film, nu who may have never been made. or made much later. i still like it very much though.
and theres nothing wrong with an American being the master, especially since in the film the master takes over the body of the guy, who is American so it makes sense lore wise too.
Recently just watched the doctor who film and ive got to say i really do like him playing the doctor. Wish there was a series with him playing the doctor.
The 8th Doctor kind of got the short end of the deal in the series, I know he came into his own with the Big-Finnish audio dramas, the DWM comic-strip and original novels and whatnot, but he deserved more screen time. I know a lot of Eccleston fans would disagree but quite often I think they should have have him carry on into the new series, well that's how I would have done it. I also miss the four part format to the stories, Doctor Who just isn't the same without.
I remember watching the movie when it first came out and not thinking much of it - admittedly, I was a kid and only knew the bare bones of what the show was about. Knowing what I know now, I look at this and can only think...what could have been.
IF Fox had picked up the 1996 series of Doctor Who, Paul McCann would have been The 8th Doctor for 7 years, same time span as Tom Baker. But the BBC couldn't see a US version of Doctor Who which is one reason why it flopped so much. BUT despite this, we got the chance to see what US Doctor Who would have been like. Truth be told, the best part of the whole TV movie was The 8th Doctor himself. But there were a couple sweet moments in the TV movie, like the 1st time ever, there was actual kissing in Doctor Who. It is The 8th Doctor that bridges the gap between Classic Who and Modern Who so kudos for the attempt at making Doctor Who USA.
I really liked Paul Mcgann as the doctor, wish he was in a few seasons and not just the film 😭. The minisode was good and who knows with Tom Baker in the 50th saying 'maybe you'll revisit some faces', maybe he could regenerate to Paul, whether it be the same face or just similar although I think that was just for Peter Capaldi as he was in the show before.
I think that the bit with Baker in the 50th was to set up explaining how they could bring back previous doctors without trying to explain why they're so old. So under the new theory, they can bring back say...the 7th or 6th or 5th Doctor and simply explain that it's the 13th/14th/15th doctor using the face of 6, 7 or 8. If that makes sense?
Movie was a pilot for a proposed series that sadly Fox couldn't sell to sponsors. Took a long time for BBC Wales to put together their own show. The fox film was fully licensed from the BBC though.
to be honest if youve read the leaked plot synopsis of the first 6 or so episodes of amarican who, it was awlfull, the audio season are so much better.
I'm still pissed Moffat made a whole new Doctor because he thought audiences would be confused by the one half the fans at least know about. And those who don't... how hard would it be to say "this is the guy who came before big-ears. Got it? Moving on."
Ionut Maris I've thought that too, but I think Eccleston was the appropriate decision to herald in a completely new era. They wanted to convince the BBC this was something different.
"I'm not a child, don't talk to me like I'm a child. Only children believe that crap. I am a doctor."
"But it was a childish dream that made you a doctor. You dreamed you could hold back death. Isn't that true?"

paul's voice in the movie compared to the big finish and notd, his voice is very high pitched
Yeah and he's doing almost an irish accent.
Mark McKeown I think its some scouse leaking out :D
JamesPlaysGames95 it's been sped up, if you get a us vhs of the film he sounds fine
1:01 I wonder if anyone else caught the voice edit in that. lol
llSuperSaiyanll yep. Being deaf has one of the few advantages that I can lip read. He said twelve
Grace: *finds out he has 2 hearts*
Also Grace: *Cant believe he came back from the dead*
Well, what do you find more believable, a person having two hearts or a person who can cheat death?
@Stefano Pavone "Breathing in Stereo" XD
I love that!
@Stefano Pavone Maybe that's why he can't handle only having one heart working? It also means only one lung is really working fully and the other is getting little to no air.
She was being really childish
@@johannahyde-parker8422Not really. A person can have two hearts, in fact, there’s evidence to suggest that we all have had two hearts when we were fetuses, but they merged into one later on in our development. Coming back from the death is significantly harder to believe than someone having two hearts, which is rare, but not Impossible.
Grace Holloway was the 1st medical doctor to use a stethoscope on The Doctor & hear both his hearts since Harry Sullivan after entering his 4th incarnation.
Anyone notice after watching this and then Night of the Doctor that I've barely aged? I'm so awesome
I guess Paul must drink Virgin blood
Yeah you look like you hardly aged you and Keanu Reeves I swear you guys never age
Nah, you aged, but like how fine wine ages. (And like how George Clooney ages.)
You are
@@jeanmichellelaurent Or adrenachrome dont forget
The difference between this and the "physician, heal thyself" scene is incredible. You can't just try to turn Doctor Who into Four Weddings And A Funeral and expect it to work.
The greatest thing RTD did when bringing back Doctor Who was consider this film and by extension This incarnation of The Doctor canon. He could have started the Nu series with Chris as the 8th Doctor, but didn't.
It's a shame Grace wasn't a companion in the audio adventures.
+The Doctor Hm, I feel like I've seen you before... care for a jelly baby?
One of the biggest problems I have with current "Doctor Who" is that, due to rights issues, Grace has never been mentioned, except for a couple of appearances in the comics in "Doctor Who Magazine". They definitely should've made some arrangement for her to at least be mentioned; she's too good a character to be unpersoned.
she was in one of the audio dramas but she played a different character.
Considering we're getting Eric Roberts back...
That was due to rights issues unfortunately.
The movie will always have a special place in my heart, and the Eighth Doctor is still one of my favourites :D
"Only children believe in that crap! I am a doctor!"
"Ah, you might be A doctor, but I am THE Doctor. The definite article, you might say..."
They should definitely bring him back in a multi doctor story with Capaldi though...
send your idea to the BBC
+William Medina He's done a bunch of audio adventures though.
yes, i know. i have almost all of his run on Big Finish. I'm meaning doing a mini on TV,since the 12th won't return till the X-mas episode of 2016.
yes..do it. Fans have produced works that have been made. Nothing to loose, everything to gain. Starving artists and Dr.Who pretty much run together..if you get my drift :)
Paul McGann was just BORN for this role, DAMN.
The eight doctor always had a charm about him especially when reading minds
@ 1:02 Paul mistakenly said he had twelve lives and they had to fix it in post production
hi queen of punk
I'm kind of concerned by the people shooting it that they didn't notice one the spot and have him do another take. . .
I was just looking for this comment to see if anyone else spotted his words not matching his lip movement
@d no, the 11th or 12th was, in The Time of the Doctor Clara begs the timelords to give the doctor more regeneration cycles so they did
@d Matt Smith (the 11 doctor) was the last one, because he was the 13th incarnation. Well, at last was supposed to be. Don't want to spoil the story for you tho.
If he doesn’t at least get a full episode during the 60th I’m gonna be all kinds of heartbroken!
Me too ❤
I'm from the future, RTD has let us down (although there is a rumour about a spinoff).
This Incarnation must have spent some time as Oscar Wilde.
The eighth doctor is the best ever I wish they made a whole series I've seen the night out the doctor but never heard anything about timelord science
The Daleks say the genesis ark was "TIMELORD TECHNOLOGY" and "TIMELORD SCIENCE".... Referring to the transcendental property of the prison. Also, Rassilon invented regenerations, didn't he? (
Regarding Timelord Science and Night of the Doctor this article will provide a lot of background :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brain_of_Morbius
The 90's was a bad decade for movies, so so bad. But Sylvester and Paul shone brightly in this odd flick.
Uhhh...lots of great films from the 90s.
Shawshank redemption
Troll 2.
Sam Easton titanic
uh, Terminator 2? Jurassic Park? Schindler's List?......Space Jam?
Paul McGann is nothing short of wonderful, isn't he?
Except for that nonsense about the 8th Doctor claiming he was half-human, I thought McGann was marvelous in this movie and the Day of the Doctor prequel. Yes, the audios are awesome but it was a real missed opportunity not giving McGann more screen time as the 8th Doctor.
Rule #1: the doctor lies.
@@c0mpu73rguy I mean, him being half human was a plot point in this and not a throwaway line.
Helen Wang Oops (never watched that film TBF).
I loved how Paul McGann's voice sounded in the televison movie.
0:17 I think this may have influenced 10 always jump-scaring Donna with "OH!!!!"
1:01 'I have 13 lives' has been re-recorded. Did they make a mistake or something?
Mcgann read the line wrong and said 12, but they fixed it in post production, hence the dubbing.
***** A Time Lord can regenerate 12 times not 13.The First Doctor was born and grew up and it was given 12 regeneration so that's 13 Doctors.
CLARA: Okay, so you're number eleven, so
DOCTOR: Ha. Are we forgetting Captain Grumpy, eh? I didn't call myself the Doctor during the Time War, but it was still a regeneration.
CLARA: Okay, so you're number twelve.
DOCTOR: Well, number ten once regenerated and kept the same face. I had vanity issues at the time. Twelve regenerations, Clara. I can't ever do it again.

You really get things "mixed up".
***** I'm sorry about that. You're right, I should explain things better. :)
But I get into debates with tons of whovians and I came to realize that quotes and links to articles are the easiest solution.
But, you've prove me wrong here. Sorry about that.
Grace: You have two hearts!
The Doctor: Tell me something new.
I love how he says so matter-of-factly before that, "You see, that's no echo."
Since I saw this film as a little boy (probs like 15 years ago), he has been my favourite doctor. Always felt weird to say considering how little screen time he has makes it a hard sell to the fav Doctor debate but every second of screen time he has is golden. Maybe I’m just a McGann fan as he’s also great in Withnail and I
This movie is the perfect bridge between old and new Who. It took the Doctor into a new direction that carried over to Chris and David's Doctors.
Best Doctor.
Lemonhead118 hahhahhhhhhhhaaahahahah
Nicholas Brent the audio books are amazing
Yo Kennedy you're most likely referring to the audio dramas not audio books

"The Eighth Doctor Explains Regeneration"
He sure af didn't
1:01 the dubbing of this line gets me every time 😆 You can see he mouths ‘12 lives’ but they had to redub it because it 12 regenerations… 13 lives… well before the Timesless Child storyline. And I can still remember as a kid seeing the version where he says ‘12’, but I can’t seem to find that version 🤔
He was correct... the Doctor had13 lives.
@@Roper122 I know, but he mouths 12 lives and they dubbed him over with 13. I literally just explain it dude 🤦🏻♂️
@@Jimmy_D_82 Yes.. and... where did I disagree with you?
I think you missed the point of what I said entirely.
I didn't say anything about the dubbing.
I was making a point about Doctor Who in general.
The Doctor had 13 lives.
After that...
Ah thank you, i was wondering what he was saying without the ADR
@@Roper122 okay, but I think you missed my point entirely then. You said you didn’t say anything about the dubbing… buuut my post is about the dubbing. So why are you commenting on my post if you aren’t talking about the dubbing? That was the whole point of my comment.
Shame we didn't get a whole series or so for the Eight Doctor, so underappreciated
Ender Skies
Thats true, he did say he would come across familiar faces in the future......
Fr, we would ve had tons of dialogues like that had a season been made
This movie gets way too much criticism...
Not to mention the blatant disregard for prestablished continuity
MissyQueenofEvil tbf with doctor whos state back then it was either this or nothing. and maybe without the film, nu who may have never been made. or made much later. i still like it very much though.
and theres nothing wrong with an American being the master, especially since in the film the master takes over the body of the guy, who is American so it makes sense lore wise too.
That smug little 'yes you can'
Gosh, I miss him.
Oh, wait... HE'S STILL GOING!!!
Recently just watched the doctor who film and ive got to say i really do like him playing the doctor. Wish there was a series with him playing the doctor.
Instead of more of this wonderful Doctor we get a series set in Coal Hill Academy. Hmm
I love how he basicly talking about a complete different subject than Grace in the beginning of the clip.
Two hearts. "One for casual, one for best."
Paul has such a lovely voice
He would of been amazing in a series.
I want to go to an alternative universe where the 8th Doctor got his own series
The 8th Doctor kind of got the short end of the deal in the series, I know he came into his own with the Big-Finnish audio dramas, the DWM comic-strip and original novels and whatnot, but he deserved more screen time. I know a lot of Eccleston fans would disagree but quite often I think they should have have him carry on into the new series, well that's how I would have done it. I also miss the four part format to the stories, Doctor Who just isn't the same without.
They are also two extraordinarily beautiful lead actors.
It's true, the movie did have some forgiving moments. This was one of my favourites.
we should have seen far more of him; he was good
The 8th Doctor showed lots of what appeared to be psychic ability in this pilot. Being able to see into peoples futures and pasts.
McGann was my Doctor and started my journey to becoming a Whovian. I'm not ashamed to admit it.
I wish we could've seen more of the 8th doctor
We got some more with audiobooks comics and other media. But I agree we should have had more on TV.
I remember watching the movie when it first came out and not thinking much of it - admittedly, I was a kid and only knew the bare bones of what the show was about. Knowing what I know now, I look at this and can only think...what could have been.
They should have done the reboot with the eighth we got so little if him
IF Fox had picked up the 1996 series of Doctor Who, Paul McCann would have been The 8th Doctor for 7 years, same time span as Tom Baker.
I love his voice so much
When this Doctor said he was "HALF-HUMAN", that killed this movie for me. And this Doctor, in fact.
This scene is so Doctor Who.
If David Tennant can come back so can the eighth Doctor, also a prequel can be made, it would take some imagination but Russell T Davies could do it..
He is an incredible incarnation of the Doctor.
We should’ve had some seasons with Paul McCann
God, I want more of this man as the Doctor.
The fox film was fully licensed from the BBC though.
to be honest if youve read the leaked plot synopsis of the first 6 or so episodes of amarican who, it was awlfull, the audio season are so much better.
joshua powell Got a link to it?😂

1:20 She maybe a doctor, but he’s The Doctor. The original you might say.
I'm still pissed Moffat made a whole new Doctor because he thought audiences would be confused by the one half the fans at least know about. And those who don't... how hard would it be to say "this is the guy who came before big-ears. Got it? Moving on."
Russel t davies. Not moffat. *flies away*
Late replies ftw
Well at least Moffat bring Paul back in The Night of The Doctor miniepisode.Something that RTD failed to.
Ionut Maris RTD was in charge of the early years. It was too soon to get into Paul McGann's stuff then.
DarthRushy I know. But he could have brought him back for Series 1 and give him a full Series. It would have been cool.
Ionut Maris I've thought that too, but I think Eccleston was the appropriate decision to herald in a completely new era. They wanted to convince the BBC this was something different.
This movie is so underrated but so good
"You have TWO hearts!!"
You DON'T say!! He has been yelling that at you the whole freaking time!! Even while you were killing him!!
i know he only had this and a minisode but he's my favourite doctor
Paul Mcgann should of had a television series he was a brilliant doctor I can't believe he's not in the 50th anniversary :O
Paul McGann, so underrated as a Doctor.
Took me a second to realize by 13 lives he meant one base life plus 12 regeneration lives, that's why there can be 13 incarnations of a Time Lord.
8: “I have 13 lives.”
10: “right… yea… about that…”
Paul was great
Good job Doctor Who, you uploaded a clip that has the PAL speed up error
Grace was beautiful; I don't care what anyone says.
Nick Hentschel literally nobody thinks she isn’t.
McGann did a good pastiche of all 7 previous Doctors. It's a shame he only got one on-screen outing.
He sounds younger in the movie than in night of the doctor
Australian Lawrence that's because there's a 17 year gap between the production of both
Kit Brown I know
Kit Brown I was just saying
