@@JohnSmith-gf3vz It’s probably because he doesn’t count the War Doctor when he says his age because he’s saying how old “The Doctor” is, and he didn’t consider the War Doctor the Doctor until after The Day of the Doctor.
I know, right? I think it's a perfectly tragic ending to McGann's Doctor - after spending so long trying to do the right thing, his final act is essentially giving up. The salute to his companions is just the icing on the cake.
Paul McGann deserved more time than he got as the Doctor, but he was caught between the old and the new. This performance proves just how good he would have been.
Interestingly the Time Lords themselves only used small quantities of the elixir to assist with difficulties regenerating and were content to let the Sisterhood keep their immortality to themselves. (When Time Lord President Morbius tried to seize the elixir he and his followers were condemned as criminals and executed). The long-lived Time Lords viewed true immortality as highly undesirable.

I’m suprised no one else figured this out, but the fact that there’s a War Doctor in between 8 and 9 definitely explains why they didn’t shoot the Regeneration earlier. I’m glad they did it eventually or the ending to Name of the Doctor wouldn’t make sense. Paul must have been happy to come back for this.
The reason why there wasn't a regeneration scene earlier is because RTD didn't want to confuse the mainstream audience who weren't familiar with the show at the time. Moffat wanted Eccleston as the War Doctor but he refused to return so then the secret incarnation came in. RTD's original intention was to have McGann be the War Doctor which I personally would've preferred rather than creating a new incarnation for one episode. The War Doctor was merely a Moffat invention so it wasn't the original intention. Paul Mcgann was supposed to regenerate into Christopher Eccleston.
Unfortunately the fact that he doesn't mention Liv, Helen or Tanya feels a bit odd. Of course, there was no way to predict his future companions, but it always felt out of place to me. It's definitely a dumb thing to worry about though.
Watched who for more than 50 years..... this minisode gives me goose bumps every time I watch it..... given the chance McGaan would have been the best small screen Who..... his big finish catalogue is the best.
Been a Who fan for 55 years, never was it as brilliant as this ........ I’m always blown away by Paul’s performance here.... they should have given him a special of his own..? The Sisterhood The Doctor ... everything is bang on point here! Brilliant!!!
I loved his mentioning his Big Finish companions. This is the story we wished we could have had with McGann in the first place. "Doctor no more!" A call-forward to the eventual use of "Gallifrey no more"?
It would be really awesome if they just created a series based on John hurts adventures, it could be called Dr who, the time wars series or something like that
JedAnimationStudios Meh, nah. There'd be none of the time traveling, none of the companions, none of the monsters but the Daleks. Sure, we'd get a bigger glimpse into Gallifrey and it's culture, but mainly it'd just be episode after episode of The Doctor running around zapping Daleks and growing a moustache.
jacob burt That's what Big Finish is covering. I recommend all of their audios, besides Eight, they do it for all the classic Doctors, even specials where they meet up! :)
I've always hated regenerations(it takes some time to warm up to the new doctor). This one was the worst though. It so heroic, brave, and heartbreaking... I felt like I had just met 8th doctor and watched him die in 7 minutes...please BBC, make spin off for the 8th doctor. He deserves his time. I would also like to see a war doctor/warrior spinoff.
@Rimi Biswas: He was introduced in the TV movie special set in the US in 1996 [ it was filmed in Canada], it was to revive the series, began with the Doctor No 7, played by Sylvester McCoy whom had been the last actor to play him as the BBC axed the series in 1989. Doctor is involved in death by cop scenario and re-generates in the morgue to Paul McGann. You need to watch the movie, he never got a series sadly.
Paul McGann has done the big finish stories but only a tv movie and this and even after 16 years between the TV movie and this he was amazing. A truly great doctor and one I hope returns to the role either for specials or somehow a episode involving the 8th doctor.
Interesting narrative twist that in healing himself the 'physician' ceases to be 'the Doctor'. This is artfully juxtaposed with his inability to help Cass - who is beyond even the skills of the Sisterhood of Karn. The irony of the piece is that the good man from Gallifrey never ceases to be 'the Doctor', it's too much a part of his psyche - he merely loses touch with it somewhat during the Time War.
McGann was the reigning Doctor during the most difficult part of my life. To this day when I imagine a real Dr Who traveling out there somewhere in the Universe, I picture the 8th Doctor.
Honestly, the music at the end should have been something darker or something as simple as a drumbeat to signify his warrior persona. For a dark change, the music sounds too triumphant.
Then again, Hurt's Doctor wasn't that dark to begin with,as we later learn. 9 10 and 11 tend to demonize the War Doctor as a way to deflect their own guilt, because they don't remember saving Gallifrey. We see in Day of the Doctor that the W Doctor wasn't even that different to his other selves. He wasn't cruel or even cold, but the other Doctors suffer from self-hated, so they remember him that way.
3:31 The first time I saw that I went "Finally, Paul McGann into Ch-- Huh? What?! That's not Christopher Eccleston. Oh yeah, I completely forgot about John Hurt's Doctor who was introduced at the end of "The Name of the Doctor". So he's the War Doctor that exists between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston?".
@Andrew Chapman: Yes, he turns into Eccleston in an episode which features David Tennent and Matt Smith as 10 and 11, he sasses them both for pointing their screwdrivers at folk- he turns inside the Tardis into the 9th Doctor. Paul should of got a series rather than this mini, which I don't remember, but, this also is the reason why that John Hurts version doesn't have a number and is basically known as The War Doctor, when technically he is the 9th Doctor and Jodie is technically the 14th but because he didn't want to be "The Doctor" and a warrior instead, the numbers start again from Chris Eccleston and Jodie Whittaker is the 13th I also doubt the last since The Master had 19 incarnations the last being Missy aka The Mistress played by Michelle Gomez. The Doctor needs a nemesis, although The Mister/Mistress is both friend and enemy. Of course there is Me, but I wasn't keen on her character.
Yes please. I would like to get McGann back one more time while he still looks kinda young. For the 60th I would like McGann, Tennett, Smith, Capaldi and Jodie or who ever the new doctor will be. I'm not sure if Jodie will still be the Doctor or not by the time 60th comes around but if she isn't then I guess the new guy will be in the 60th. It's the 5 doctors 2.0. I'm not sure what the story would be about but those are the Doctors I would like to see.
Not to mention the DoctorDonna, Rose Tyler and Clara Oswald all took on aspects of The Doctor at various times. It's long been hinted that Time Lords don't do gender the same way we do.
FYI, BigFinish is doing a new set of adventures that somehow have a pre Night of the Doctor Eight traveling with Cass and his great grandson Alex (voiced by Sonny McGann who I guess used to be credited as Jake McGann who had previously voiced Alex in previous adventures) It’s entitled: Doctor Who: Time War 5: Cass
“Your The Sisterhood of Karn, Keepers of The Flame of Utter Boredom” 😂😂😂 Only 3 mins here Paul Mcgann returned as The Doctor and his performance proves he should’ve gotten a series at least 1996-2000
John hurt was good but it would have been awesome to see Paul McGann in the special alongside Tennant and Smith! Not sure if there was a lot of point in the war doctor...
It might have fit the continuity better had Paul returned, seeing is he is a pre-existing Doctor. I'm sure John Hurt was cast because he's more popular.
@@ToylandChairman666 problem with paul mcgann being a time war doctor is that he himself started far and away from the kind of person that would do it. at his heart he was always the boyish adventurer that traveled the universe the way the crew of the enterprise travels the galaxy at the same time, the 9th doctor recently regenerated so he couldnt have fought the time war. so the compromise was to write the 8th doctor in more and more stories that will eventually edge him mentally and chronologically towards the time war, eventually ending in a regeneration that had to give birth to a warrior doctor. might not be perfect but at least to me its the best option for writing the doctor's character
While you don't see John Hurts face fully, what you do see in his reflection is a much younger face to that we saw later. Obviously this was done digitally, but it goes to show story-wise, how long he was fighting in the war for.
You know, I didn't think about it when I first saw this but wow, he looks so young in this first shot...he must have fought in the time war for such a long time
I'd argue more than any other regeneration this one feels like an actual death; not only is Mcgann's Doctor's time over, this is the end of him as The Doctor. This is the essentially the only time The Doctor loses his core beliefs and motivation regenerating.
The thing that I always liked about Mcgann turning into younger John Hurt is that there’s the sort of implication that somewhere out there is like, an alternate universe where the original show maybe never got canceled, and maybe Paul McGann still got cast as the 8th doctor, but a few years earlier, leading to John Hurt maybe getting cast in the mid to late ‘90s, looking exactly like that. Not to most implausible thing.
This short tell us a number of things. 1. Paul Mcgann is not only an amazing Doctor, but an amazing actor. 2 BBC hates Paul Mcgann the way DC hates Terry Mcginnis. AND 3. They had 6 months to film this.....they couldn't give us a little more than a short? Not to mention there is NO REASON for a War Doctor. Paul Mcgann is fully capable of doing the 50th. AND would have made more sense.
Actually originally Christopher eccleston was suppose to be in the special instead of John hurt, but he declined this creating the war doctor as a stand in. He only worked with it in time to give us a way to add more regenerations
.....Doctor , I will say things...things that will hurt you and every one around you things that will break the ideas of sanity and compassion horrid dark things....things that will break your hearts all of our hearts....but...trust me in the end....You will be the doctor again...although...some could argue...that you never stopped being the doctor never will stop being the doctor....you just needed to be reminded of that....
Paul McGann should have been the Doctor who fought in the Time War. It would have been way more tragic, a Doctor who abhors violence having to fight and kill. Steven Moffat not being able to see Eight committing those atrocities was all the more reason to do it. Plus the numbering wouldn't be all messed up.
That is what makes this regeneration tragic. The Doctor who would rather die than kill, being convinced that killing is necessary, then dying to become a man capable of it. He knew he never could. Frankly, it could have been the making or breaking of McGann's Doctor. Fans might have reacted like you, or like I would have, shocked and horrified at what McGann's Doctor was doing. It would have been quite polarising. Much safer, and probably smarter, to avoid potential fan backlash with a new War Doctor. And I don't think the numberings THAT messed up. It's hardly a complicated timeline. They made it easy enough to keep up.
What i love about this regeneration is that according to the day of the doctor novellisation, there wasnt anything special in that chalice the sisterhood just needed the doctor to admit who he needed to be for the war

I like how the War Doctor just picked up a war belt and calls it his outfit and goes for war.
My mouth dropped when he mentioned his Big Finish companions.
The audio adventures are so underrated in the fandom
Unfortunately the fact that he doesn't mention Liv, Helen or Tanya feels a bit odd. Of course, there was no way to predict his future companions, but it always felt out of place to me. It's definitely a dumb thing to worry about though.
Wish we had more of this Doctor before he became the war Doctor. He fit the role so well
There's his audio drama series released after the TV movie which are excellent
"You will be Hurt."
"Do you mean... it's going to hurt?"
"No."
Watched who for more than 50 years..... this minisode gives me goose bumps every time I watch it..... given the chance McGaan would have been the best small screen Who..... his big finish catalogue is the best.
You can tell a BBC drama. The actors act like they're on stage and you're watching theatre. It's pretty unique.
Then an alien bursts out of his chest...
+oxmys what??????????????????????
+kylo ren Well he changes into the younger John Hurt.
oxmys was that a reference to alien??
+kylo ren Yup!
+oxmys "Oh not again"
It would be really awesome if they just created a series based on John hurts adventures, it could be called Dr who, the time wars series or something like that
JedAnimationStudios Meh, nah. There'd be none of the time traveling, none of the companions, none of the monsters but the Daleks. Sure, we'd get a bigger glimpse into Gallifrey and it's culture, but mainly it'd just be episode after episode of The Doctor running around zapping Daleks and growing a moustache.
Maybe a series revolving around number eight's adventures
jacob burt That's what Big Finish is covering. I recommend all of their audios, besides Eight, they do it for all the classic Doctors, even specials where they meet up! :)
JedAnimationStudios John Hirt is dead.
So is Tarkin
I've always hated regenerations(it takes some time to warm up to the new doctor). This one was the worst though. It so heroic, brave, and heartbreaking... I felt like I had just met 8th doctor and watched him die in 7 minutes...please BBC, make spin off for the 8th doctor. He deserves his time. I would also like to see a war doctor/warrior spinoff.
+Rimi Biswas big Finnish makes a bunch of audio stories for him
Yeah, the 8th Doctor has a bunch of cool audio adventures. I believe he has about 10 seasons now!
Theres a Doctor Who movie that features the 8th Doctor.
He had an enitre movie, buddy.
I could gladly watch this version of the doctor for MUCH longer
I am loving these regeneration scenes, keep it up guys!
¡Allons-y!
Miki Rivera
I'm more partial to "Reverse the polarity!", but to each their own. ;)
Sorry 10th but you were there in this regeneration, I mean, your him! Do you not remember?
Interesting narrative twist that in healing himself the 'physician' ceases to be 'the Doctor'. This is artfully juxtaposed with his inability to help Cass - who is beyond even the skills of the Sisterhood of Karn. The irony of the piece is that the good man from Gallifrey never ceases to be 'the Doctor', it's too much a part of his psyche - he merely loses touch with it somewhat during the Time War.
The Doctor who treats himself has a fool for a patient.
@@akondar So, you've also heard quotes from Sir William Osler (1849-1919). :-)
+Bradley Green I think it conveys the change in mood and attitude of the Doctor following his regeneration.
A... drumbeat, you say?
_flashbacks_
Tracer huh I to am a video game character that's self aware now let's go make some muneh
I think the DOCTOR assuming what must be done as allways. Should be Triumphant.
And the NOISE silently DEMANDING "Subscribe" was a 2nd bit of Awesome.
Yes sir
Great story
McGann deserves a proper run on TV
Really appreciate this little scene. I’ve seen it hundreds of times but it’s always excellent
doctor : is it hurt ?
sister : yes paul it's hurt and you'll turn into john hurt
Andhy Rheza You win the internet
hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
RIP
HarukaCelticWitch your lack of understanding of this joke
I’d love to see Paul McGann in the 60th anniversary special.
Hrs been working with the BBC again in the last couple of years so its possible
0:30 'Young or old. Man or woman.'
A line promptly forgotten by thousands of hilarious saltybois.
@guyverjay Why not? We've known for a long time that timelords could switch genders when they regenerate.
Not to mention the DoctorDonna, Rose Tyler and Clara Oswald all took on aspects of The Doctor at various times. It's long been hinted that Time Lords don't do gender the same way we do.
Went from young male Doctor & Master to older Mistress and Eyebrows...
did someone say salty?
@The10th Traveler the low score is mostly due to shitty script/story writing and being overly PC(like much of today's media) tho
Oooh. Those Final words every time...
FYI, BigFinish is doing a new set of adventures that somehow have a pre Night of the Doctor Eight traveling with Cass and his great grandson Alex (voiced by Sonny McGann who I guess used to be credited as Jake McGann who had previously voiced Alex in previous adventures)
It’s entitled: Doctor Who: Time War 5: Cass
2:25 it's not just gonna hurt. it's gonna john hurt (ba dum tss)
RIP Sir John Hurt.
“Your The Sisterhood of Karn, Keepers of The Flame of Utter Boredom” 😂😂😂
Only 3 mins here Paul Mcgann returned as The Doctor and his performance proves he should’ve gotten a series at least 1996-2000
"I don't suppose there's any need for a Doctor anymore. Make me fat now."
John hurt was good but it would have been awesome to see Paul McGann in the special alongside Tennant and Smith! Not sure if there was a lot of point in the war doctor...
Or at least 4 of them
Na what Katie said.
maybe because its just not in paul mcganns doctors persona to be a warrior so he had to change to basically become another character
It might have fit the continuity better had Paul returned, seeing is he is a pre-existing Doctor. I'm sure John Hurt was cast because he's more popular.
@@ToylandChairman666 problem with paul mcgann being a time war doctor is that he himself started far and away from the kind of person that would do it. at his heart he was always the boyish adventurer that traveled the universe the way the crew of the enterprise travels the galaxy
at the same time, the 9th doctor recently regenerated so he couldnt have fought the time war. so the compromise was to write the 8th doctor in more and more stories that will eventually edge him mentally and chronologically towards the time war, eventually ending in a regeneration that had to give birth to a warrior doctor. might not be perfect but at least to me its the best option for writing the doctor's character
- Will it hurt?
- Yes.
- Good. *Regenerates into John Hurt*
just one season of McGanns Doctor. Is that so hard?
This seven minute episode is my favourite in the new show. Wish we could have the eighth doctor back for a multi doctor story or something.
While you don't see John Hurts face fully, what you do see in his reflection is a much younger face to that we saw later. Obviously this was done digitally, but it goes to show story-wise, how long he was fighting in the war for.
I can't believe this was eight years ago. Time keeps flying by.
2 got murdered.
In Hermes Conrad words: "this is the least scientific thing I've ever seen!"
Just so you know, met Mcgann at a convention about 4 years ago. He is as lovely and down to earth as you would expect him to be. One of the best.
Broo its a shame i live so far away from those conventions (Arg) i just wanna go and say some nice words to them

They had to do a regeneration because they wanted Matt Smith to be the 13th Doctor so it would work with the whole Trenzalore story arc.
Actually originally Christopher eccleston was suppose to be in the special instead of John hurt, but he declined this creating the war doctor as a stand in. He only worked with it in time to give us a way to add more regenerations
Wait... DC does not like Terry McGinnis????! I thought Batman Beyond was awesome!!!
I think the fact that DC never uses Terry outside of the occasional fan service says a lot
"Will it hurt?"
Yes, it'll John-
CENA!!!!
Give him his own series! Paul still looks young enough to pull it off.
A re-reincarnation... I would love that :-) Please BBC...
It could be set during the 8th Doctors era, not the current Doctor regenerating into him again.
@@rodster6campingprepper There would be a lot good stuff for a spin-off... I really want that series :-)
English Prepper I've been Asking this for ages he still looks young enough we need to do it before it's too late
From his acting in this scene, I think that if Paul McGann had a series, he would've been one of hell of a doctor to watch.
"Will it hurt?"
"It will John Hurt"
"Cool"
Mcgann NEEDS a full series. Please!
8 accepted his regeneration pretty easily considering he'd been in that body for about 800 years.
Something we have been waiting for since 2005.
Anthony L yup
I very much prefer this regeneration effect, how he keels over and glows instead of t-pose and flames.
Such a shame we haven’t seen Mcgann in a televised season. He would’ve been one of my favourites… least we have big finish
I'm going to become a Warrior!? What kind of things could make me want that!?
Oh, you were so young back then... One day, you shall find out the hard way... Yes... One day...
The War Doctor war doc...teach me the way of your people q.q -bows-
oh you just wait till 5 more regens bud. you'll like your 10th.
+LacedtfUp no he won't.
.....Doctor , I will say things...things that will hurt you and every one around you things that will break the ideas of sanity and compassion horrid dark things....things that will break your hearts all of our hearts....but...trust me in the end....You will be the doctor again...although...some could argue...that you never stopped being the doctor never will stop being the doctor....you just needed to be reminded of that....
Doctor: Will it hurt?
Me: IT'LL JOHN HURT!
2:56 - 'My thumbs have gone weird'!
One of the best Doctors, shame he didn't get to have a chance to expand his doctor, soooooo good!
8th Doctor needs his own live action series
If Doctor Who would've been safe and smart, it would've died in 1966.
***** What? No. I just hate it when it screws up this badly.
I never said I wanted the show to die, I just want it to do better, I want it to crawl out of the ditch.
THIS GUY GETS IT! Paul McGannn should have been in the 50th!
Actually cant believe how good the video quality is! It looks better than alot of matt smith episodes
Somehow, I think 'will I be Hurt?' would have been a better line. ;P
He needs another series! The most underused doctor! He has the potential to be the best!
Aside from Eccleston not having enough screen time I agree this Doctor was amazing
Wonderful acting, this should have been in the main program other than a DVD extra.
Can you please make him comeback in the next series!
I would love it if he came back for the 60th Anniversary
What i love about this regeneration is that according to the day of the doctor novellisation, there wasnt anything special in that chalice the sisterhood just needed the doctor to admit who he needed to be for the war
Tbh this would have been a cool opening to day of the doctor, kinda like Thanos killing Loki in Infinity War.
