I tried to eat there last fall for the first time. It turned out to be the last time I will ever step inside again.
No one told me how pushy and rude they can be. I don't talk very fast due to a brain injury as a kid. I walked in knowing what I wanted and walked up to a carver and tried to get my order out but started to stumble. The carver who was in a hurry (do they get paid by the sandwich?) told me to get out of line if I can't order fast. I told him I have a speaking problem. He said he didn't care. So I left.
As I walked by the cashier she yelled out I didn't pay and I replied your carver didn't want to serve me. She asked for my ticket back and I told her I left it on the counter. After I got outside someone, I assume he was the manager, started yelling at me as I tried to hail a cab. I tried to explain the situation to no avail. A cab stopped and I got in.
Do you call that customer service? I understand they were busy even though it was after 2 pm, but couldn't the carver wait a minute to allow me to order?
I know I am just one customer out of thousands that eat there but doesn't that place care at all about what is important? Oh wellthats life.

To my surprise she ate her entire pastrami sandwich!! Everything was great except for the latkes. They were greasy and cold. The hotdogs with mustard and sauerkraut were fantastic. My mother passed away last year at the age of 94. I will definitely visit Katz Deli next time I visit the east coast.

Cutting meat properly is a big deal in a deli like this. You need to know the right angles to cut so you don't end up with chewy bits. Meat is very fibrous and needs to be cut against the grain. Some large cuts of meat have fibers running in different directions. So skill is definitely a must. Cutting meat is an art and most people are stupid about it.

There's a burger joint like that in Atlanta and I won't go to it because nobody's yelling at me like that. If a person is new and isn't familiar with the menu then yelling at them isn't helping the situation. Don't get me wrong I don't take long to order because I hate holding up a line. Katz's is amazing and all and a real quintessential trademark dish of Olde New York City, but it's like 16 dollars a sandwich now. My dad is always upset because he and my mother could eat and still have leftovers for 25 dollars, but now it's 25 dollars a person. Katz's is a great experience but only go if you're willing to splurge that much money and if you go during a calm time, tourists come in buses to that place and I've seen a line go around the corner and Katz's is on a very long block.

I have eaten there 3 times and I love the food, especially the pastrami, but the last time I didn't like being yelled at because I wasn't ready. So I simply turned around gave back my ticket and left. They were yelling at me to get back in line, they yelled at me for not paying (for what I asked?), they yelled at me to never come back! So I haven't. I know they do things different there but I assume they have enough business without one guy that wasn't ready. How sad. Where is the customer service! There are other places that have a great sandwiches in New York City.

A delicatessen or deli is a retail establishment that sells a selection of unusual or foreign prepared foods. Delicatessens originated in Germany during the 1700s and spread to the United States in the mid-1800s. European immigrants to the United States, especially Ashkenazi Jews, popularized the delicatessen in American culture beginning in the late 1800s.

This place is amazing. And since the Carnegie Deli closed its doors, Katz’s is really the only old-school Jewish deli left in the city. Amazing pastrami, amazing matzoh ball soup. If you think this is expensive, you have never lived in NYC. Also you get literally a mountain of meat on your sandwich, so you are basically ordering at least two sandwiches.

Iris Eckelboom It is true google it. In 1988 the Katz family member who was running it died. The family members who it was left to had no interest in keeping it so they sold it to a restaurateur. The reason he lied is because it doesn’t sound as impressive to say your dad bought an already successful and iconic restaurant. It doesn’t really take that much hard work to be successful when all the hard work has already been done. Not to say they don’t work hard, but the only thing they have had to do to stay successful is maintain quality control. Branding, logistics, menu, building a clientele base, etc...... all those things were already done for them. What him and his dad have done isn’t really impressive, had they done anything less then they would be failures.

Rizza the Great. My parents first took me to Katz's in the 1950's and it is exactly the same now, so yes it is going back in time. No doubt people can get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or tuna on toast, or even raw fish flown in from Japan and call it a "California roll" for less if that's your thing, but if the pastrami is a little pricey it's not much different anywhere else that makes their own. It's become popular with tourists because it's a time capsule and they serve the best, and yes locals still do go there. Harold's Deli in Jersey that someone mentioned charges $28.95 for a pastrami sandiwich.
