Elephant Herd Squishes Giant Pumpkins

  • Some of the world’s largest land animals demolished some of the area’s largest pumpkins during the Oregon Zoo’s 23rd annual Squishing of the Squash.
    This year’s pumpkins were provided by Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers Club members Larry Nelson and Jacob Baldridge.

    It's amazing to see the amount of awareness and control they have over their size. They crush the pumpkins with just enough force to get it to open. Truly magnificent animals.

    The strength that elephants have still amazes me. They are huge animals but crushing 1000 pound pumpkins is impressive. I hope that I get to touch an elephant in this lifetime.

    Well, I dont have elephants, (sadface) but I did get pumpkins out to the deer on our property and they finally found some of them tonight, so quite fitting.

      it’s messed up when poachers cut off the elephants tusks, ain’t it?
      because elephants use those tusks to protect themselves from lions, etc
      if a lion decides to attack a elephant, hell lower his head down to the ground, when the lion charges towards him, and then once he gets his tusks underneath the lion, he’ll raise his head up really fast, so that the tusks will throw the lion up in the air

      @@jefffuehr366 poachers usually kill the elephants to get their tusks as far as I understand it. I mean really how on earth would they manage to cut the tusks off a living elephant?

      @@sixfigureskibum As far as we know, pumpkins lack any form of nervous system. That's not to say the fruits don't know they've been cut off the vine. If there are seeds inside, they'll passed through and pooped out and they'll start growing a new crop next year

      @@sixfigureskibum Yep everyone knows plants and trees communicate through the soil, and with pollen and other pheromones. If a giraffe eats too much off a tree, that injured tree will signal downwind that the giraffes are being assholes.
      The end goal of the pumpkin is to spread seeds. The elephant will poop out the seed all over the place, so it's mission accomplished!

    I wish I was there to see it, but happy Squishing of the Squash! :) The Asian elephants certainly got into the spirit with their enrichment. I'll look into the feasibility of partaking in the Howloween celebrations this year. I may not end up going but I'll try to squeeze it in for October 30.

    The first time I went to the Oregon zoo the elephants were so dispirited. I'm glad to see them looking better psychologically.

      Elephants in their natural environments roam over hundreds of miles, I think being enclosed like this explains their lack of spirit. Compare these elephants with the joyful elephants in the elephant sanctuary in Thailand.

      Another 'former' librarian here. Let's face it - librarians never really retire - or forget (like elephants!) My favorite bit of miscellany that stuck with me over the years was a patron's question - what was Roy Rogers' dog's name? This was pre-internet days, so many hours later (Lord, how i loved a good search), i found the answer in a beaten-up little book of old t.v. series. His dog's name was Bullitt. I'll never forget.

    I love how certain kinds of zoos are giving enrichment items to their animals. It gives the animals some entertainment while in captivity.

    The one breaking them with their head is really smart. Keeps the dirt from their feet out of the food.

    This is very satisfying. Remember that guy that used to do shows and he'd just break a bunch of fruits and vegetables? I forget his name now but he was really popular when I was a kid and I understand his popularity now.

    I've seen plenty of images of elephants stepping on food to open it, but that's the first time I've seen one head butt a gourd into submission
