A drone captured the incredible moment a whale pushed a paddleboard with its fin.
Maximiliano Jonas filmed the amazing footage off the coast of Puerto Madryn, Argentina, on August 31.
Maximiliano used a drone to capture the moment a Southern right whale approached a paddler board on which his friend Analia Giorgetti was sitting.
Incredibly, the whale gently pushed the paddleboard forward with one of its fins, in a video that has gone viral online.

We humans kill so many of each other, we need high tech machines to do the job, great areas of the ocean are now oxygen free deserts where nothing lives, most of the tropical jungles we need to clean the air, have been cut down for cattle or oli palm, and our closest relatives, the other great apes, are near extinct in many cases, and we dont even know or care about the living conditions of sentient sea mammals like dolphins and whales, whom are severely impacted by our shipping and fishing. . Speaking of which..There are whole species of fish you can't buy anymore, as they are fished out..Should I go on?

Whales are just people who live in the sea.
Oh so much gentler than a poke! It knew it needed to be gentle. Maybe recognized the 'being' as a good thing. Maybe another human being cut a net from its body as I've seen happen on here, and knew to be gentle, wanted more interaction like that.

I think this is proof they're at least smarter than human children. I've seen human kids. They would never play with their toys this gently.
I remember when I used to live in Oceanside California and I was out on the peer watching a small group of dolphins taking turns knocking surfers off their boards. It was hilarious. They would even time it just right so that just as a surfer was starting to stand up they would swim up and either bump the board or grab the leash. They would then quickly swim away and were clearly very amused with themselves. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

@@marythomas1198 One aspect of "empathy" is being aware of the fragility of another thing and conducting yourself in such a way as to not frighten, disturbing, or harm that thing. Think of how you might cradle a ladybug or lightening bug in your hand, even though you have the ability to flatten such a small creature. You have such immense power and control over this little thing and yet conduct yourself with caution and respect for this other living creature. There is empathy in THAT! Sometimes...you just need to perceive the dynamics fully to appreciate what all is taking place!
These gentle giants also eat much smaller creatures - like shrimp and plankton lol

I can't even imagine what that human was going through: equal parts unmitigated terror and incomparable awe! This was an experience of a lifetime, for sure!
I'm sure if he was out there in a paddleboat he is very aware if whale behavior. He would know that so far as we know, there has never been an intentional death of a human in the wild from any species of whale. Orcas have killed in captivity but never in a random wild encounter.
I bet that was at least one of the top 5 moments of his life. It would be my 1st or 2nd. But I don't do......the ocean. Screw that death trap lol.

@@BK-qp8zp If there is anything that would get me into the water of the ocean and actually be pretty excited about it. It would be if there were whales. I went snorkeling on a cruise one time and and I rounded is this big rock and in between this rock and the reef was a if the reef was a 6' long nurse shark and they had told us that there was virtually 0 chance we would encounter anything bigger then a footlong barracuda. I didn't freak out because I used to watch the crocodile hunter so I knew that nurse sharks don't even have teeth it's more like sandpaper so I didn't freak out about that. That big dude swam up a couple feet and checked me out and then just settled back down to the bottom minding his own business.
But you're right that's a decent size paddle boat and it makes It look like a bathtub toy. The most impressive to me though. Is that at this point in history we, as far as we know, share the planet with the largest animal to have ever lived in recorded natural history, as well as the fossil record. I always picture the Brachiosaurs at the beginning of Jurassic Park and then imagine that a blue whale is even bigger than that!

That paddle boarder is so fortunate to experience that compassionate and considerate interaction.

Wow! That must have been a slightly (or very!) scary, yet humbling and beautiful experience. Imagine being out on the water and having all that power right underneath you!!!
You can see the intelligence. That 75,000 lb whale isn't thrashing about, violently tail whipping or slapping its fins at the paddleboarder because it doesn't know any better. It gently nudges the board and its curiosity is a wonder to behold. I wish I was in that paddle boarder's shoes at that moment.
They do know better. That happens when males are trying to mate and display dominance to the other males or a female is protecting her calf from the thrashing males. When that isn't going on, they're actually very curious and sometimes even protective over you.
They just have weird ways of displaying how intelligent they really are.
It's just like I was watching an autistic kid for years. He did know better with every single thing he did. It just came out differently. He wasn't dumb even though some people treated him like he was dumb.

It seems like at first the whale tried to push gently but probably miscalculated how strong he was compared to the tiny little human so it was a bit too much but the second push was juuust right and what the whale intended in the first place. This also shows that the whale used a trial-and-error problem-solving method to figure out how to satisfy his curiosity without causing harm.

@@cindyknudson2715 The first one was at 0:20, the second is at 0:45, he raises his flipper to push a second time but decides otherwise and just grazes the boat with its back. Or idk, maybe a rough wave just happened to pass by and I interpreted it as the whale being extremely gentle.

I remember touching a whale shark's fin once. They're almost as hard as a boat. Whales are most likely no different. They can easily crush us with their fins if they want to, so I appreciate how gentle they are.
Once I flew a small plane over the ocean and had a clear view straight down to a pod of whales. I tilted the wing so that I could circle them and get a better look. They started copying, yawing their bodies and fins in the same direction. So then I turned the plane the other way and they copied again. Then one of them was like 'well, can you do THIS' and just kinda rocked back and forth rapidly from one side to the other. So I was like hell yeah! and copied the whale. You could tell they were all sharing a laugh about it. I spent so much time out there playing copy them that I burnt up 1/4 more fuel than I was supposed to and then I also forgot to switch fuel tanks. landed back at the airport on fumes. One of my most precious memories.

Wow. Any story you hear where they express intelligence should be no surprise. They are the only other animal with neocortical structures like humans. Meaning they are capable of extremely complex thinking. Using deductive reasoning they probably have a complex, non-sound,* based language.
Even though they are smart as humans This story still surprised me. They are able to watch and analyze an airplane. And by copying it they express understanding of it as an individuated entity.
They don't call them gentle giants for nothing, their hearts are so big. I love his dance around the paddleboard . How awesome is this!💯🥰

This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. A massive beast can also be a gentle curious giant. It is simply playing but doing so in a way that recognizes its dominant power compared to our own. It's hard to imagine a greater connection man could make with the animal world. What an honor that paddleboarder got to experience this.
It makes me sad, because these are incredibly intelligent animals, surely aware of the dangers of humans. They could just as easily stay away from us at all times. Yet they seem to clearly identify individuals that are kind and pose no threat, attempting in their own way to show their own kindness and willingness to "be friends".

What an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience. These paddle boarders were incredibly lucky to have this wonderful encounter.

Whales only live today because we stopped hunting them for their oil. Mankind is the most mighty, and the whale knows it.
@@Judge_Magister I concur and agree with you about the cessation of whale hunting and its implications relating to allowing whales to flourish today. But there is no doubt the whale has a huge brain, and I believe it may include the ability to recognise and appreciate a human who offers no threat, and is appreciative of same by reciprocating with gentle contact in recognition as demonstrated. I am sure they have a lot more in common with mankind that we have yet to ascertain if they possess similar feelings that human have.

I’m currently doing a presentation at school on the Southern Right Whale, I know pretty much everything about them and I think this is one. They are one of the biggest whale species in the world, they travel about 1,600 kms around the southern hemisphere a day! They vary from 16-18 meters long and are often very playful and curious around humans. They are the most gentle, lovely, kind animals on the planet and we cant afford to lose them!
That's a typo right - 1,600 kilometres a day.? I can't even do that on a high speed motorcycle. Anyway, good luck with your presentation. Cetaceans are a great topic.
@@Liiddyyy I guess that's swimming for 24 hours then. When the time is right - do a few PADI scuba diving courses & experience the wonder of diving with other marine animals. I've been doing that for many years - swimming with seals, dolphins, manta rays & sharks ( I'm a certified shark diver ). Have even been approached by Orcas.!
@@jimcottee9187 there is nothing more humbling than swimming with an ocean creature. I grew up on Florida's Space Coast and have swam with lots of dolphins, manatee, shark, and even alligators! The Indian River Lagoon is a magical place! ❤️

Researchers who have studied whales' brains have discovered the part that concerns empathy and benevolence is comparatively larger than in humans. They have been documented helping humans and other creatures. 💜

@@R20966 southern right whales don't eat anything bigger than krill or plankton, so no it would never eat a human as it is physically impossible for a human to be swallowed by one.
This is in Puerto Madryn, Chubut, Argentina, they are what is called "Southern Right Whale" in English and "Ballena Franca Austral" in Spanish, they come to reproduce at our coast between June and November. From beaches like El Doradillo they can be seen in a very close distance and, in high season, constantly, due to the large number of them. The depth in the coast drops suddenly which allows them to swim a very short distance from the shore. Here you can make sightings that consist of go out to sea in a boat and letting them get closer (they are VERY curious) and the best experience is seeing them jump or swim with their babies. In Puerto Madryn, they are protected and studied and there are museums and information about them. They are magical, they transmit a lot of peace, it is incredible how something so big can be so peaceful.

The sheer volume of gentle love in that life form... humbling.
It's incredible how careful it was being. It was very mindful of the kayak like how you handle a newborn kitten. They must know how big and powerful they are. That kind of self awareness is extremely rare. Humans even struggle with it at times.

Think about the amount of intelligence it takes to be curious about the paddle boarder, decide to examine them, and calculate how gentle they have to be to not crush such a tiny, fragile land mammal bobbing about in the ocean… these animals are sooooo much more amazing than we give them credit for.

It was Analia Giogetti, a woman, and that day was her birthday. She was very happy.
My wife and I were out surfing one day and no one was out because it was a bit choppy. About 30 feet away we see a fin! Then another and another! Dolphins! The whole pod swam under and between us. Truly a religious experience.
“Oh hey there. You tired? Need a flipper? Here ya go”. That is absolutely magical seeing the interaction between two sentient species
I was thinking " Hey what happens if I do this. Ohhh, hey that's cool!" The paddleboarder was like a bath time rubber ducky, for whales. 😊

I went whale spotting off Frazer Island in Queensland years ago, I was not prepared for the raw emotion I felt when I saw the first Mama Whale with her calf , the humpback whales give birth there, I just burst out crying, I had no control of my emotions for 15 minutes, I still don’t know why I cried, it was like my spirit had a mind of its own, it was unforgettable 💕🌈🦋

Kind, gentle and very forgiving. Humans could learn a thing or two.
I’ve only ever been near whales in an actual ship, a 140’ trawler. Just once but it was amazing. They were pilot whales, I think, and came up to the bow and made it plain that they were checking us out. We waved at them and checked them out too, thrilled to be so close. The coolest part was that they took off but came right back with two of their babies, clearly showing us to the little whales. It was probably a warning to the babies that we were dangerous but it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced, witnessing another creature educate its children about me. There are undoubtedly intelligent minds inside those giant bodies.

This brings tears to my eyes just thinking of how amazing that experience must have been for the paddleboarder... what a beautiful and memorable encounter. These whales are such gentle and majestic creatures. There is such beauty in this world we take for granted every day as a race of beings. Life and all its wonderment and experiences are such a gift. When these incredible animals begin to trust us to be kind and gentle with them evil has to rear its ugly head somewhere in this world. These experiences are the balance of nature we desperately need to remind us of how precious life is... not just our own, but all living creatures on this earth God has entrusted us to care for.

@@amazingsupergirl7125 I can't remember details other than I am positive I had heard that certain whale species not only use calls to communicate but they Flash different colored parts of their bodies like the tops and bottoms of their fins to communicate with each other as well.

Whales are known to be altruistic. I wonder at what point the whale realized it was not a distressed fish floating but a human on something plastic. Beautiful. And props to the human for staying calm. ❤

The sheer awesomeness of being next to an animal that large must have been breathtaking. It didn't mean any harm was just casually inquisitive about what it's seeing. A bit alarming i'm sure for the paddle boarder with something that large coming so close. But after your initial fear you realize their is nothing to fear. Just a beautiful exchange between two species.

lol, pretty sure these paddleboaters are terrified. you can see they move FAST when the whales attention is turned, but stay perfectly still when being watched. Orca's are not friendly to their food - they like to play with it.
@@Anthony-tj7jx These were not Orcas - the killer whale. In another video I was a massive whale protect a diver from a great white shark. He his her with his fin and directed her to stay on that side of him as he swam her away from the shark, towards her boat where she was hauled up.

I have seen humpback whales slapping the water with their pectoral fins and the bang goes right through your boat and rattles your teeth. It could swat you like a fly. When I saw this whale raise its fin I thought it could so easily do that.

I love how curious and gentle they are. They could easily kill us. I swam with dolphins once. I didn't know it at first. I was a kid, swimming in San Diego off of Pacific Beach. I was farther out than usual, the water was deep enough so that my feet weren't touching the sea floor, but I was a strong swimmer. I could still see my mom and other beach-goers on the shore. Then I saw some of them waving at me, and I waved back. Then they kept waving at me. Then some started throwing themselves into the water to swim toward me, and that was when I realized I was surrounded by fins. The first thought in my mind, and apparently my mom's and about 50 other people's minds, was "SHARKS!" 🤣 BUT, as it turned out, it was a pod of dolphins. The REALLY cool thing was that the lifeguards said a great white had just been spotted in the area, and the dolphins MAY have been forming a protective cocoon around me to keep me safe. I don't know if that's true, but they definitely weren't shy. I could have reached out and touched several of them, but it kind of freaked me out and I did not go back into the water that day. 😂
Dolphin can be quite aware and protective of us, I use to swim with them all then time in the Gulf of Florida and they have an innate knowledge that we don't belong there in the deep water. Had one that was so insistent that I was in trouble when I dove off the boat doing a cannon ball that he got under me and pushed me right back up to the surface with his head under my butt and flipped me onto the rear climbing board. Me and my grandfather had a good laugh and I gave him a rub on the head because he kept circling keeping an eye on me making sure I was alright. I couldn't dive in or I had an over protective dolphin trying to get me back up to the surface, if I slipped in and swam around they would stay by my side.
dolphins are notoriously rapey. they may have been sizing you up

What is so AMAZING is just how careful this creature was with the paddleboarder. He just nudged the end of the board enough to propel it gently forward, when he could have easily crushed it. This shows true intelligence and compassion. Wow. If only we could show these same gentle creatures the same compassion.

I don't think they have quite the communication network that we do (books, newspapers, television, internet), and may not be aware of whale hunting.

Truly amazing footage! In July 2009, I went for a surf at Anzacs Beach, Phillip Island, Australia and saw a large crowd watching a whale that had already been there for some hours already. (I spent about half an hour before and after my surf taking photos with my DSLR.) I was one of the closest surfers to the whale at one stage, which seemed to be watching all of US! Knowing that they can communicate with each other over vast distances with their sounds, I slapped the water once, with both hands, as hard as I could. The whale slapped the water with a fin once. I then slapped the water twice. The whale slapped its fin twice. Yes, then I slapped the water three times and that whale slapped the water with its fin three times. Are whales intelligent? No more questions, Your Honour!

Beautiful spot at Cape Woolamai, I live an hour or so away in Gippsland and frequently head to the Island. sounds like the best experience!! I'm a bit jealous tbh 🤣 Definitely intelligent creatures for sure. Lucky it wasn't another type of creature like the Great White that Vic Hislop caught near there years ago! There are predatory whales. They're intelligent, but also understand the concept of the circle of life, that some will perish so others can live, and that life eats life. I think if we could communicate, whales would understand why humans hunt. Apex predators serve a function, which is why I don't eat meat unless it is sustainably hunted by someone I know or I fish it myself.
