  • Part 2 in my series where I bought a Honda CBX 1000. This is taking delivery of the bike by Cape Moto Assist (www.cmassist.co.za), and a walk around to show you how she looks!

As a long time CBX owner (I've owned 22 since 1983 and still have my first CBX and 3 others) and enthusiast, you did well on your acquisition. Your bike is in relatively good condition, very original and complete. Even the old Kerker exhaust isn't such a bad thing on these bikes. The shocks are the later FVQ's. The seat looks to have been recovered, but it was either re-done very well or is a miraculously well preserved original. The original paint (Honda called it "Candy Glory Red" or "Candy Metallic Glory Red", one or the other) was a series of, I think, 11 layered colors of candy lacquers, starting with a silver base coat then working through various shades of orange and red with a final clear, that was prone to fading under sunlight. I have an English translation copy of ~15 pages covering the official painting instructions issued by Honda somewhere in my files on the CBX. My local Honda dealer parts and service manager had requested this copy from Honda and passed them on to me when the dealership stopped selling bikes. The paint would be very difficult to exactly replicate, as modern one color paint isn't an exact match and is a thicker coating, but you'd have to be an expert to see the differences IMO. If you can live with the fading, my vote is to leave it as is.

I think the faded paint gives it character. Plus, it’s nice patina.

Good find! Mirrors are correct. Agree crash bars should be chromed. Get rid of the 'Straight Six' stickers! I found mt CBX - 1980 'A' model last year. Recommended you upgrade your flex hoses to braided (Spiegler makes them in black to match) and sintered pads - EBC or Brembo. Big difference! Change the oil and filters, maybe drop the sump and check the sludge trap. LED bulbs a good idea to improve your road presence - find a short H4 that will fit within the shell. Also suggest you check fork seals and replace the oil. Cheers, Chris (ex-Durban). My buddy Klaus, ex-Cape Town has a red one like yours. Enjoy!

You said it, you wife likes it like that (the color of the tank). So, you know what you have to do 🙂. leave it that way .

There are much smaller engine guards out there. Some metal polish and wax will do wonders. The bike is a complete example with low miles. I hope the gas tank is clean inside. Check and or replace the petcock. Mine had loose carburetor boots which turned the header pipes blue. Nice bike.

I like the paint original as it is. Nice bike that needs a bit of fettling, but that's the fun of old bikes.
They are ferociously expensive here in Ireland - maybe €15k+ for a nice one but I've seen them even much more for show bikes.
Best of luck with her - I'm going to have to save harder!

It looks to be in pretty decent shape. Mine was in way worse shape when I got mine.

The paint is I believe a base coat clear coat. You might be able to buff it out.

Best to leave it like it came! You go to make one thing better then you will just keep going one thing after another... Nice daily driver..

Round mirrors always and the "Straight six" font is totally dodgy. Nice survivor, lucky to find an original unmolested and unrestored one

Very nice looking bike. I personally would have it repainted. Not sure I would try to have it replicated to original specs, a "close enough" shade would suit my preferences, but I would also ride it far more than a collector would.

Hey Ade. I try to get one out every week, so you should be able to watch the shaky start up and nervous first ride on Saturday.😉

I looked at these in 78 ,would not allow a test drive and I wouldn't buy unless I did, and was pricey!

All motorcycles should come with a hinged door for battery removal. Leave it to Honda.

Nog 'n baie mooi ou CBX! Spuit die fiets (professioneel) oor! Dit sal die waarde verhoog. Vervang heel eerste die olie en filter! Blessings Ns: Ek het so pas my 1979 CBX klaar gebou: th-cam.com/video/7vcUCEF9t_M/w-d-xo.html
