- After receiving a huge amount of feedback from my last Land Cruiser Crawl Control video, I decided it was time to put the system to the test.
What works best? High speed, low speed, wheels straight or steering input? These are some of the tests that we conduct today in the sand dunes of the south coast of Western Australia.
Keep in mind the ambient temperature for this video’s testing was about 27 degrees Celsius.
The crawl control function on these Landcruiser’s is a game changer when it comes to self recovering from a sand bog or maximising traction of shale rock inclines, but it does take knowledge of how, why and what the system is. Great demonstration. 90% of lc owners sadly don't know that it works. Combine this with airing down and it's deadly. Also the fastest setting works the best.

@@XploringOz does that thing have low range.??..if so,try that,to get out of sand,,works for thousands of non toyota drivers.!!..mate was bogged in sand in his 200,never used crawl,but he found the diff lock buttons..some people just cant read..so people buy these things because its toyota,& know absolutely nothing about the vehicle or 4x4 ing.. sad..
@@phantomwalker8251 Ok mate. Unfortunately times have changed since the simple locked and low range gearboxes. These vehicles are a little more technologically advance and for those who are just getting into 4WD'ing can be overwhelmed by the amount of electronics and series in which they are required to be used for maximum efficiency. Each to their own, however these videos seem to receive an overall positive response from the majority of viewers.
PS. the LC200 doesn't come from factory with lockers, hence the focus on electronic systems...

Keep getting the same comments on my videos, "just turn on crawl control". I've found that the tranny overheats before you will ever get out. The sand around me can get 65C in the summer and most vehicles will overheat if they stay bogged for long with the engine running. Looks like your sand was significantly cooler.
It still blows my mind how this car can get itself out of a bog.

Very informative Nathan. Can you let us know how much deflation on the tyres you used and what you would recommend for standard AT tyres in the same situation? Also, would you get the same results in the test using standard tyres, viz a viz speed selection on th crawl control. Good work! Graham
Thanks! So I deflated the tyres to about 18PSI for this test. I could of gone lower, down around the 10PSI if it was really bogged, however at those pressures we need to be careful not to roll the tyre of the rim. Not to mention I needed the tyres a little harder just to get bogged in the first place for testing.
Definitely recommend AT tyres for a good all-rounder. Anything more aggressive, like a mud terrain will actually be detrimental in sand. The more aggressive the tyre, the more that dig deeper into the sand. The best styled tyre for sand is highway terrain type patterns, with close tread blocks. The negative with these tyres is that the construction is generally inferior to AT tyres that use a 'light truck' construction with thick sidewalls. These heavier, stronger tyres are strongly recommended for rock, gravel and other harsh outback terrain. In conclusion, the AT tyre really is one of the best all round tyres for general Australian conditions.
Further, yes, the testing would have been almost identical with factory sized tyres.

Giving the temperature without reference isn’t useful. What would be to hot and does the car compensate and protect itself from it?
?? The reference would be the overheating alarm would it not? The fact that it went into limp mode and stopped driving is it’s compensation.
Is there a realistic difference between toyota crawl control and say a dual locked patrol just holding engine at 1000rpm in the low box 1st gear? Clearly there are many technological differences but isn't the key just keeping all wheels spinning at the same medium speed?
This would be an interesting test to conduct. I can't comment, however the overall method of crawl control does seem to keep the tyres spinning at the same rate, therefore theoretically it would work. Be great if someone had this vehicle and could test it out

Do you have an extra trans cooler fitted?
I'm guessing you changed the transmission fluid after it getting to 150C!
Hey mate, so negative, I don't have a transmission cooler on this vehicle. I do have the lockup kit which will prevent high temps for prolonged periods on the highway.
The oil is able to reach these temperatures in a temporary state for brief periods of time. This will not have much effect on the oil quality, it's when the oil remains at these temps it can degrade quite quickly. Given that I only got to these temps for two short tests I won't be changing the oil at this stage. PS. I only had the oil changed about 5000km as well, so it's fresh stuff to start with.

Thanks for posting, I have encountered this over heating alarm before in my 200 series using the hill decent control on some serious down hill steep shit. its definitely not trans over heating, as theres no load, it appears its the brakes due to the ABS hammering on and off. Have you tried/encountered this your self on decent? Curious to know. Glen.

Will the crawl control system work in reverse. There could be a scenario where you can't go forward and have to recover in reverse?

Another good demo - I've not found the crawl method very useful when bogged while towing (1.6t camper) but will have another crack with higher speed based on this vid ;-)
Thanks mate. Yeah, having an additional 'dead' load attached to the vehicle would definitely make it alot harder. I guess it would be worth a try with the crawl control first to see how it reacts before pulling out the shovels and recovery gear.
I recently replaced the stock transmission cooler with a larger aftermarket transmission cooler on a 2013 US LC200 that I use for overland/towing. First thing I noticed was that the transmission pan and TC temp remained at 180F (82C) to 212F (100C) after the install. Which was the same as stock. I monitored the temp via the OBD port with OBDLinkMx+.
Initially I thought I had installed the transmission cooler incorrectly but then it dawned on me that the AB60F (6 speed) transmission has a built in thermostat that I had to bypass when I serviced the ATF (per the service manual). This thermostat kept the ATF warm until it reaches a certain temp (maybe 180F or higher) before allowing the ATF to go the the transmission cooler. I bypassed the thermostat (with a safety wire) and now my ATF pan temp/TC temp is ~40F (22C) cooler. Even when towing my 2 ton trailer, I barely hit 212F (100C). I suspect the thermostat is also present in the 8 speed LC200.
If I live in a colder region, I probably would not bypass the thermostat in order to warm up the ATF. However Australia, Middle East, and western US have pretty hot seasons hence I decided to bypass the transmission thermostat.
That's interesting to hear and good to know.
I've never had a problem with overheating transmissions since fitting a Stocklock torque converter lock. This keeps the transmission temps down when pulling heavy loads on the highway. This is the first time that I've had these alerts come up. Saying this, I wouldn't ordinarily use the system at these speeds in these conditions.

My Prado Manual says to watch the temperature of the ABS brake controller when using Crawl Control too.
For sure, this would be helpful, however you would have to have specific equipment to do this.

Greeting from Switzerland! Really enjoy your videos. Here's a loaded question: I'm torn between a Hilux or a Land Cruiser (4--door or 2-door) as the base vehicle for my Overlander; What considerations would you have in choosing between one or the other?
Thanks mate, I'm glad you are enjoying the video. I guess the choice will come down to how you are planning on using the vehicle, where you plan on taking it and personal preference.
Personally, I enjoy wagon styled vehicles. They are (generally) shorter wheel base, making them a little more capable off-road, they keep all your gear clean dry and locked away and generally have coil springs, again a little more suited to off-roading.
The Hilux though is an awesome vehicle. They are still reliable and capable and will generally be able to carry more gear and can be easier to pack and load the gear with the utility configuration.
For me, it's always going to be a cruiser, but the Hilux will definitely suit the needs of many people.
Only use it in the snow.

I was using crawl control in sand bog last week and encountered A/T trans oil temp red alert and crawl control stopped. I was afraid of that will cause mechanism hazard so hesitate to use crawl control in sand bog again... any advice on this situation? Appreciated.
Sure, so I believe that if this system is engaged for too long it will cause the transmission temperatures to exceed their safe value, therefore stop the vehicle. If you were using a faster speed on the crawl control and it still wasn't coming out of the bog by itself, I would suggest maybe lowering tyre pressures, digging for sand or adding in traction aids to assist the vehicle.
The over temperature alerts will not cause permanent damage to the vehicle as they are implement at that temperature to avoid this.

Thanks so much for all your vids. Have just picked up our new LC200 and can’t wait to hit the tracks and try out some of your tips. Also your videos helped so much with our build, I’ve used your lighting tips as inspiration and the dusting issue tips as well. My question as someone who beach launches boats, do you think crawl control would work in that scenario with a small boat trailer/light camper trailer attached? Or just asking too much :)
Hey mate, thanks for your feedback, glad to hear that you are enjoying the content.
The crawl control will definitely work with a trailer attached, although it might be a slow way to exit from the launch. It would definitely be something to test however just keep an eye out on the those transmissions temps, they'll be the first to overheat if it is too much.

Well, good news, on this trip I filmed a video just for this. I can't confirm when it will be released at this stage (hopefully within the month). However the video goes through some of the settings and rationale behind these choices for sand driving. These cruisers are full of electronics and it takes some practice and navigational skills to master them, but when you do, these vehicle are almost unstoppable.

Was it the steering or running on slower speed that got out the bog quicker?
My guess, prior to video, was as slow as possible with the wheels continuously turning would be best.
Yes, a think a few people would of had that thought, however this testing shows otherwise. I think it would depend heavily on the type of situation you find yourself in.

Great video. My 2007 doesn’t have the crawl control function, just the downhill assist, so it’s out with the Maxtrax and a shovel. Nonetheless, the car is very capable and can get out of most situations. I’m going on a tagalong tour along the beaches from Bremer Bay to Albany for a few days so will be interested on the various other methods of extraction that will be utilised on that. 👍

the temperatures that it was sitting at, after the car was pulled out of the bog are completly fine for such a stress test, most of the people one here have no idea about automatic transmission, great test and what a great system
For sure, I am happy with the temperature range after the tests. Even with the temps briefly reaching 150 degrees will not cause damage. It's when the oil remains at these extremes for extended periods of time we should start to get worried, or at least increase the maintenance.

So I just let the vehicle cool down, still idling.
It comes down almost straight away no problems.
Nathan, how would crawl control compare with diff lockers?
So diff lockers will provide another level of traction. They are also going to have a little more control at slow speed, won't require braking of the wheels and potentially a little easier on the vehicle in terms of stresses placed on the CV's etc. The only negative would be the cost and labour required to have them fitted.
Although they are great, this crawl control system is one of the best on the market from a factory vehicle. It can eliminate the need to buy lockers, depending on your type of off-roading.

For sure, so I was using about 18PSI for this test. Obviously I could have gone much lower, however I needed this pressure to get bogged in the first place for the purpose of testing.

Hey Nathan, as always.. nice and very informative content! One question, does CC apply the brakes when a wheel starts spinning too fast? Is that the reason the car vibrated while using CC? Cheers mate🤙
Yes, that’s correct. As wheels start spinning the TC system will ‘grab’ the wheel with the brakes in attempt to send power to the other wheel. Sometimes in low traction surfaces, like sand, it will start to shudder due to the continuation of the system activating.

Thanks Nath. Your vid gives me that little bit of extra confidence to take it to places where I would not usually consider. The overheating is a bit of a concern but it is able to be managed.
Fit an external auto trans cooler, will help alot.
Thanks mate 👍 yes, the temperatures need monitoring but the higher speed test in this instance has no issues. The temps were still within spec and seemed to remain lower for longer. Definitely worth some sort of gauge like an Ultragauge to monitor.
Thanks Nathan. I agree with your comments on transmission temperatures. Torque converters have come a long way since earlier days of automatic transmissions, as has transmission fluid. Both can operate at much higher temperatures than their equivalents previously could.
Can you recommend a service interval for changing transmission fluid for vehicles used for towing and/or sand driving?
Thanks Pete, glad you enjoyed the video. So transmission fluid changes would depend on how the vehicle has been used. If it’s relatively standard and hasn’t towed too much Toyota claim that it doesn’t have to be changed at all.
If the vehicle is modified and used for heavy duty applications it would hurt to get it checked over.
I’ve replaced mine recently at 100k kms after installing the lock up kit 👍

Never needed them with this system. Although I completely understand the benefit from them, a system like this from Toyota has saved me thousands of $$$ by not having to purchase them.
Given that this vehicle is mainly a tourer and not an extreme off-roader, it probably isn't quite necessary.

Good question. This will be another excuse to go out and get bogged, all in the name of testing...
I know I get stuck in snow all of the time and craw control won't get me out!! MaxTrax and a shovel are my friend in deep snow. I run Toyo MT's with lots of tread. I'd probably do a bit better if I ran studded snow tires.
Crawl Control usually works for me in mud as long as I don't get the body bogged down.

Thanks mate, glad you have found the video useful. So no, I haven't re-geared the cruiser. The tyres are only a few inches larger than standard, although it potentially could help, not something I've looked at yet.
I use the Ultragauge MX1.4 to monitor engine data. Works very well and would highly recommend.

@@matthewlopez398 Awesome mate! I'm sure you will enjoy it, it's a great little device. So I don't believe it can read EGT temps on the pre-facelift 200 series (like my one), but I have heard it may be able to on the newer models. I can provide much information on the newer ones, but the forums might be able to help out a little.
I'll hopefully be installing a dual EGT monitor in my 200 in the next few months and will do a video on the installation.

These high transmission temps are exactly the reason why I installed a fan with manual override switch on my transmission cooler. Works great when driving at low speeds off road.

Each to their own and I appreciate everyone has their own personal preference, however I believe these types of responses is what is causing the degradation of the car/4WD'ing community. Where are the days where anyone could modify, customise and use their own vehicle in whichever way they wanted to without the systematic and constant criticism from those who would never use that particular vehicle.
I appreciate that your views may be different, however respect those who have different views from yourself. If everyone was the same, there wouldn't be a 4WD market full of differing brands, types and styles of customisable options.
We all use our vehicle differently. We are all at different levels of 4WD understanding. Without the wealth of knowledge and user feedback available in today's world, innovation and improvement would be significantly delayed.

@@richard4136 I would have to check, but this cruiser is a MY13, which I believe was made from 2012 onwards.
I think some of the early modes had them as well, maybe only VX and Sahara?

Great to see crawl control in action, an amazing piece of technological wizardry that you can extract from boggings like that. Wonder how many LC200 owners have done the hard yards digging and laying tracks before trying crawl control :). Did you have the tyres very low? Can’t wait to experiment with it in my new GXL. Will definitely be the first thing I’ll try before digging or dragging the winch out.
For sure, I love this system, probably my favourite electronic feature on this vehicle. I genuinely haven't had to manually dig from a sand bog to date with this vehicle.
The tyres were about 18PSI. Obviously I could have gone lower, however I wouldn't of got bogged in the first place...
These videos are super helpful for a new 200 owner like myself, coming from a Ute that didn't have the bells and whistles left me scratching my head with all the new functions. Cheers mate

Solution . Trade it in on a V8 TI Patrol. These Toyota’s are overrated, overpriced pieces of sh!t. Surprised to didn’t break an axle or something.
The Patrols are great cars, but not sure about the rest of the comments. Vehicle sales comparison between these 2 vehicles globally show different findings and I know which one I prefer 👍
