Landcruiser 200 | EVERYTHING you need to know about Crawl Control, Multi-terrain Select, Turn Assist

  • Today we learn how all the electronic controlled 4WD systems work in my 2014 Toyota Landcruiser Sahara 200 series.
    This includes:
    - Centre differential lock
    - Traction Control
    - Multi-terrain select
    - Crawl Control
    - Turn assist
    These cars really showcase great advancement in modern technology used in off-road conditions.
    Although there are many people out there who will doubt the system’s reliability, Toyota really have got these systems working well. They not only get you to your destination safely, but it does so with ease and mechanical sympathy.
    I hope you enjoy the video and pick up some tips on when and how to use all these systems.

    As a 200 series owner for 3 years ( 2014 gxl deisel ) I have found the electronics to be awesome. From crawl control, to hill assist ( up/down terrain ) and the turn assist. The hardest part for the newb is to take your feet away from the pedals and let the voodoo do its thing. Mate bogged my 200 in sand over near Exmouth on our trip to WA in 2017... pushed the crawl control, and it rose up out of the sand. Was amazing to see, let alone his expletives of WTF!! ( he has a 79 series ).. I have towed my van along muddy river tracks with the crawl control activated, whilst still using the throttle with the centre diff locked in... so much more vehicle control, same as long dirt roads, my advice is to lock the centre diff, as it will give you a more sure footed drive. On that note, as the actuator is electronic, it is known that they can stick from time to time and wont either engage nor disengage, simply find a dirt road and engage it more often to keep it moving as this will help prevent this.. also, every now and then, unplug the wires into the socket ( located near the transfer case, you cant miss it ) and clean it with brake clean or what not to get any schmutz that has built up in it. The turn assist has been used in some tight spots and that i have gotten into, and dont use it on bitumen :) One last thing, dont panic when you here the ABS working as it can seem a bit noisy at first, but that is normal. I had to comment and share my experience as this is a very informative video for any one new to a 200 series. Cheers, Glen.

      You know you guys could just import that engine and do an engine swap right?
      There’s actually a company over here in the USA that does the engine swap for Tacoma’s and 4runners, they import the Diesel engines from the Toyota Hilux from Europe.

    Another great video I just finished watching the one where you were in the sand and showed how you were able to get out. And I liked when I heard you say you had another video to explain how that crawl control works. One other reason why you are having so much success in your off-road adventure is your tires. BF Goodrich makes absolutely the best off-road on road tire it is truly an all-terrain tire. I know a ton of people who has their four-wheel drives all tricked out and on the rare occasion that they do go four-wheeling or we get a good snowstorm and they cannot go nowhere they don't want to hear it's the tires. Most people shopping for new tires will go into the store point at a tire ask how much that tire is and not liking what they heard they will eventually buy the cheapest tires there. It's people right the ones following you here on TH-cam and of course yourself and I that understands that the vehicle does not matter if you don't have the proper tires. Now answer different story if you are dealing with more mud than anything else then you would need a good mud terrain tire.
    I really really enjoyed when you were showing the different settings going up that little hill. I've never seen anybody do that before. I had often wondered if turning that wheel to different settings really made that much of a difference.
    Another great video now that I have found you I'm looking forward for watching more of them. I made sure I hit the like button and subscribe button.

      I agree mate, this is my 5th set of BFG tires (4 sets AT and 1 MT) and no problems so far. I know everyone has their opinion on tyre quality and reliability, but I have no reason to change if this is working for me. Tires and tire pressure are probably two of the most important considerations when 4x4'ing. Particularly in remote Australia, you don't want to be taking your chances with cheap modifications, including tires.
      The different levels of traction control on these vehicle definitely make a big difference and it's quite clever how Toyota have created this system. A little bit of engineering magic in my opinion.

      @@XploringOz I can see why you your videos are so good. You understand all the parts of a vehicle. You also understand not going cheap. there's a few little things you could probably save money on but when it comes to your tires you have to have a great set. Like you said everyone has their own taste and there are other good tire manufacturers out there. It's just in mind and your opinion the BF Goodrich got it right. That's why if you look at off-brand they tried to copy BF Goodrich tire tread. That's when you know your number one when people copy the product you make and they will compare their product to yours.
      I really enjoyed all your videos that I have watched so far.

      @@XploringOz do you know if the centre diff lock be engaged while driving? i understand you wouldn't engage if you had wheel/s spinning

      Luke Vandeleur Yes, it can be activated while driving. But there is a threshold for speed. I believe it’s around the 40km/h mark.

    Australian land cruisers are just some special machines. I live in Zambia, Africa, and My dad got a land cruiser from Australia and has had it for almost 13 years. Till this day he has never had issues with anything. The 4WD and all other modes seem to be working just fine. However he got another Land Cruiser (same as your model) which are manufactured in South Africa. A simple bash to the rear end tire and the cars sensors went mad. Wipers started to only operate in fast mode and the whole AC unit had to be replaced. Now many people here are going back to the more reliable Australian SAHARA make.

      It's good to hear that these models are standing up to the test over there. It's comforting to know that I've got a good one.
      I wonder why the models available over there are soo different. I could imagine changes here and there, but nothing too major.

    Now my 2008 gxl is looking old compared to your newer sahara and doesn't have those cool features.
    So i just have to drive like i stole it lol, still very capable truck.

    I find that crawl control works best for me when descending a hill. Particularly a very steep hill with loose terrain, it has proven to be a very safe option in this situation. The turn assist is also very useful when descending in a similar situation, the track is steep and you need to negotiate switchbacks. If the terrain is loose I prefer not to apply the brakes to attempt a 3 point turn, the vehicle can lock up. Turn assist just takes me around the switchback, or at least into a better angle. Thanks for the video. PS I still want lockers at some point.

      Thanks mate! Unfortunately, in Kalgoorlie where I live we don't have much in terms of hilly terrain or tight switch backs, but I'll definitely keep this in mind when 4WD'ing away.
      I do agree, still can't beat a good locked set up, but Toyota's system is getting me through at the moment.

    Very good tutorial on the electronic traction features of the LC200. I too, have a current model Sahara with those features. However, I was not happy with them as they are clunky and cause the vehicle to throw itself about uncontrollably in tough situations. I have now fitted ARB Front & Rear Air Lockers and I can tell you the difference is 'chalk & cheese'. By comparison, the Toyota system just doesn't cut it.

      Thanks Rodney. For sure, there is always room for improvement with these systems, however I do believe that Toyota are definitely up there for their traction controlled system when compared to the current industry standard.
      I too have come from a vehicle with diff locks and understand your observation of the difference. For me at the moment, this system is doing the job without having to spend the extra cash.

    I think this vid will help many LC owners, well done 👍 Too often I see cruisers stuck with only two wheels turning. Rock mode FTW. I still reckon the ABS should kick in a bit sooner though

    After having seen this video I now have an even greater appreciation for the Land Rover Terrain Response system. Even the system used in the Discovery 3 seems to be smoother than any of the systems implemented by Toyota, even on a 2020 model cruiser.

      @@XploringOz Don't get me wrong, I'm not taking a shot at Toyota or the 200. We all know that as rudimentary and archaic as Toyota's systems may be, they will keep working long after the LR3 and 4 have rusted away or been broken for scrap metal. I was just noting that while the LR systems work, they work really well 😅

    Hi. I enjoyed the video and learnt a few things. Re your comment on turn assist ... go back and look at the footage, your turning circle diameter looks to be about another car with wider not using turn control, where as when using TC the circle was tighter ... but with either turn you hound always com back to the same starting point. So to my eyes, TC worked a treat. I’ve just got a new LC200 and looking forward to testing it out and appreciated your input.

      Thanks for watching mate! For sure, look it didn't do too bad at all. I guess for me, it's just one of those systems that doesn't get used too much in a real world situation commonly.

    Really enjoyed your video. I assumed using level 1 on the crawl control would get you out cleaner, but 4 works well. I'm putting together a video on the new LC300, could I use some of your footage of the LC200 using crawl control please?

      I actually find the crawl control setting 1 way too slow. It causes the vehicle to jump around unless on extreme angles. Happy for you to use some footage, all I ask is that a watermark is included I the footage in regards to the clips source.

    Crawl control can get out of a full bog with all wheels in their own holes from traction loss, seen it in sand happen a lot. Can get you out of anything basically

    Dont forget the centre diff is a torsen diff. Its a torque multiplying diff. Leaving it unlocked it still performs exceptionally well and is very complimentary to the TC systems

    G'day. Love the channel. This vid is excellent. Slightly random, but the 'chattering' noise made by the turbos under load at 9:04-9:08 and 9:38-9:42. Is that normal? Mine makes the same noise and always told my self the turbo impellers are rubbing or something haha. Have you ever thought the need to look into it? Cheers

      I know how you feel. When I first purchased the vehicle I thought, this doesn't sound right. From all the research I've done, this is completely normal and I hear many other cruiser at the sound vintage do the same thing. I've yet to experience any issues and here's hoping nothing comes from it 🤞

      Hi Leroy, this can be a little bit of a debate. Personally, I lock my centre diff whenever going off-road. I usually don't lock it on good quality unsealed roads and rely on the AWD system, but if the road gets rough, or I'm hitting any sort of 4WD track, centre diff lock is engaged.

    1)- I did try the turn assist on sand and it made a big difference, so you might be right when you say that the surface plays a bit part in the end result.
    2)- The GX version doesn't have the terrain control, do you know which traction control map Toyota uses for such model?

      Definitely much more effective in sand, the locking of the brake builds up a sand block in front of it, thus aiding effect.

    What about mogul mode, personally I would have used that as that is what it is for, to prevent the most amount of wheel slip, however best explanation of the traction aids, Keep up the great work🤟👍👍

      Mogul mode is a very good mode. In this application not super necessary as it has high traction. Mogul mode is awesome if you need a bit of momentum. I find Rock and Rock/Dirt will pull power to try and assist traction control. Mogul mode doesnt control the engine power anywhere near as much so, is an advantage where the surface is slippery, and you need some momentum to pop up an obstacle

    Thanks mate ... this was really useful, but I'm confused. You start by going up the hill saying you wont use the rear diff lock on Multi-Terrain settings (7:51), but on your second attempt at 8:53, the Diff Lock icon was illuminated on your dash. So which is it?

      Cheers mate, I'm glad it helped out somewhat.
      So you are correct and in fact this vehicle is not equipped with a rear diff lock. In this video, I'm only referring to the centre differential lock. This provides even power to front and rear axles, not between the individual axles. Part time 4WD vehicles won't have this function as they are true 2WD on road, however all time 4WD or AWD vehicle require a centre diff lock to assist.

      @@XploringOz I have a 122" wheel base regular cab F-150 FX-4 that weighs 4550 lbs dry. Has a 10 speed trans. A 395 hp V8, rear e-locker 9.75" axle, and a front 8.8" axle with a Torsen Diff. All factory for around $40,000 AUS. It tows 9700 lbs and with proper tires it can payload 3300 lbs. and they are both about the same width.

      FABULOUS OFF ROAD DESIGNS That’s awesome mate. I wish we had access to these vehicles for that price in Australia, I reckon they would be quite popular. The import taxes and costs associate with right hand drive conversion pits these vehicles into the 100k AUD mark, which is hard to justify.
      One of my dream vehicles in the F-150 Raptor. Maybe one day... 🤞

      Thanks mate. Hmm, so I'm not too familiar with the VXR variant. My advice would be to test the vehicle off-road and see if there is any ABS intervention. If so, there must be another way to deactivate this setting.

    It would have been nice if the dealer I bought my 200 series through had shown me this. Instead I had to go bush and work it out for my self, never quite sure if i was doing it correctly. They take your money and can't get you out of the door quickly enough. Interestingly, just days prior to my warranty expiring, the centre diff light started to come on intermittently on cold starts. Once the engine was stopped after a few minutes running all was back to normal. When this centre light event happened it negated the cruise control and low range application, and as I was about to undertake yet another Nullarbor trip it needed to be fixed. I phoned the dealership and organised for it to be looked at, making sure that when I took it to them the centre diff light was engaged. I was phoned several hours later and told to pick the car up, they could find nothing wrong with it. I was not happy about this, and as I questioned the "service adviser" he suggested to me that I just disconnect the light !!!!! (Yes, really !) Had I done this it would still have left me without cruise control or low range. I took the car to another Toyota dealership under the same banner (AHG) and within half an hour the service manager phoned me and told me that it was an actuator in the transmission, an apparent $3000 part (which required approval from head office to replace!) and would take anywhere up to 7 weeks to be done. Fortunately for me it took only about ten days. The transmission was then good until several months ago, now with 180K km on board the problem recently re-emerged. I took the vehicle out into bushland and attempted to engage the centre diff, and at first it engaged somewhat reluctantly. I ran the car for a distance in low range then disengaged the system. With each subsequent re-engagement the centre diff engagement became more positive and audible in its engagement, so I carried out the whole procedure about ten times. Since then the problem has not re-occurred. May be a case of "If you don't use it you lose it ". Just glad I didn't go the $3000 (+ labour) replacement route. Many thanks for your video.

      Mate, sounds like you've had a bit of a run a round there. I'm glad to hear that you did eventually get it sorted and that you didn't have to pay the originally quote $3k bill.
      I guess it does make sense that if those actuators aren't used often they would may seize up. Good bit of advice there, making sure these systems are used from time to time to keep it all fresh and in good working order.

    Im kind of old school and have had 4wd with open diffs and also selectable lockers - one of the techniques to get the most out of open diffs was to drive through the brakes - a poor mans traction control i expect? Im interested to know if using this old technique can modify the now so super smart traction control - when its just not cutting it ?? Give me a manually operated double diff locked vehicle any day but - they are now a thing of the past !!

      Hey mate, to be completely honest I haven't tried this. My guess would be two fold, one I believe that the vehicle wouldn't allow the brakes/engine to fight under heavy load and would likely electronically reduce power output (not tested), secondly, I would imagine the traction control to be more effective than this.
      Again, would be more than happy for someone to prove me wrong as again, I haven't personally tested this.

      Hey mate, like the choice of vehicle!
      So this video was filmed at the top end of Graeme Street. There is a gravel pit out that way which has a few inclines with alternating wheel holes allowing for full flex and good tests for crawl control.
      Otherwise the telecom tower south of town can also be a good place, however it's general more rocky down that way.

      Yes, there is still crawl control in these models, however the software is a little different. There is only 3 speed settings, rather than 5 and the system is a little more 'clunky' in it's operation, but still a good system 👍

      Yes mate. The crawl control activates the ABS system which is quite loud inside the cab of the vehicle. This is completely normal and won't damage the vehicle.
      I believe some of the newer models have managed to reduce to volume of these systems.

      Hey mate, so it will depend on how bad the road is. Generally, I will engage the centre diff lock. This will just help provide more evenly distributed traction around the vehicle.
      My biggest tip is tyre pressure. Adjusting your tyre pressure to suit will be your best option. Reducing tyre pressure will assist in taking out the harsh ride over corrugations and also provide extra traction should you need it. Just keep in mind, the lower the pressure the slower you will have to drive to prevent the tyre temp's getting too high.

    Nice helpful video but you should do a little research on the center diff a LC200 has. It is a torsen unit with a rear bias. Toyota has published a technical paper on why they did this. In short a rear torque bias helps avoid drama when driving on slick surfaces on the road. So the bit about it sending more power to the front is incorrect. Otherwise, great stuff.

      Hmm, does traction control activate normally when wheels are slipping? Do you think the button has been removed by a previous owner, or just unable to find it? The reason I ask is that there might be an electronic way to disable the system.

    That sounds VERY complicated. In the old Disco, I locked the axels and the wheels, and all four corners held the samme speed. Is this Toyota system any better than that, really. Apart from adding an automatic gearbox, a computer and a ton of sensors to a car?!

      It is a little complicated, but it is easy enough to use when you get the hang of it.
      For sure, twin locked axles would be awesome, but this system does well, especially considering its a Toyota factory designed system. All in all, I’m happy with how it works. Each to their own 👍

      Negative, the speeds are too low. The transmission only uses 1st gear, so a remap won’t effect it. Even if you have a lock up kit that engages at that low speed, you can easily disable it for the test. 👍

      @@QAT4969 To be honest, I haven't tried manually locking up at these low speeds. Personally my belief is that the ride would be rough, due to the traction control continuously activating and 'shuddering' the drivetrain. Further, there is a chance the engine may even stall if enough resistance is placed on the drivetrain by the traction control system. Something I might try out in a future video though.
      To be honest, in this test, the gearbox temps were well within operating temps and given the low speed there really isn't much force exerted on the torque convertor.

      Hema Nigansz Personally, I won’t be adding any diff locks. Although in my opinion, diff locks would be better again, I don’t think I need them for my application and this system provides such good traction as it is, I believe I can self recover, by winch or other means.
      I reckon the difference between this system and diff locks would be minimal and the money could be better used on other mods to improve the ‘Offroad ability’ of the vehicle.

    I’m curious why doesn’t the 200 not have a rear locker like a Prado? It seems our Prado Kakadu has nearly identical centre locker, MTS and crawl systems with the addition of a rear locker, am I missing something or does that mean the Prado actually has more 4wd tech than the 200?

      Yeah, not sure why the 200 series didn't come out with a rear diff lock, but keep in mind this is a 2014 model, so it's getting on in age.

      Of course momentum is everything, however you start accelerating heavily at obstacles like this where tyres are lifting and spinning wheels, you are going to significantly wear drivelines and CV axle components when they hit the ground and go from spinning fast to a sudden stop....
      Why stress mechanical components when you can gentle crawl up difficult obstacles and provides mechanical sympathy...?

    I get so frustrated with this, a good driver can do everything this electronics can do with an older live or solid axle vehicle with good travel that kept all the wheels on the ground.Noooooooo excess electronics after corrigation no 100000000000 or sand hill no 1000 in the Simpson desert it won’t really help you .understanding throttle control and manually managing traction was one of the first things I was taught now
    we get the car to do it but do we learn to drive!

      I understand where you are coming from and totally agree that 4WD’ers need that underlying knowledge, skill and experience to successful and safely traverse different terrains.
      However saying this, I don’t agree that these systems are all frustrating or counter-intuitive. The new cars these days are built with independent suspension to provide far superior handling on road (compared to live axle vehicles), and these electronics give it the ability to handle great off-road.
      I guarantee you that an open differential 4WD will not make it up this hill in the same circumstances without $$$ spent on suspension, often at the cost of on-road handling. I know this as I own a 105 series 4.2L Landcruiser and it doesn’t.
      Further, having these electronic systems, as mentioned in the video not only provide the vehicle huge mechanical sympathy in the form of reduce momentum, but also help protect our tracks and trails by avoiding unnecessary wheel spin.
      Unfortunately so many people dislike these systems without any real basis apart from “back in my day, I had to actually drive the vehicle” or “electronics always fail” etc.
      You can’t buy a live axle vehicle without electronics (again without $$$ modifications) with the reliability, part availability, power, torque and comfort of a Toyota VDJ V8.
