Missing Christy Mathewson, Lefty Grove, and Satchel Paige. Also, Nolan Ryan is credited with a save in the 1969 World Series with the Mets. He most definitely has a ring.
Exactly, this is a decent list with a couple horrible flaws. Grove is the worst omission.. Most serious: experts always the Grove very high, but that is people who know what the are doing. He had nine ERA titles and nine ERA+ titles as well as 300 wins and he is the only pitcher in modern history post 1920) to have two five year peaks above a 40 WAR (1929-33 and 1935-1939. The 12 pitchers who had WARS over 40 for five years since 1920 besides Grove are Bob Feller (1939-47), Hal Newhouser (1944-48), Robin Roberts (1950-54, Sandy Koufax (1962-66), Bob Gibson (1968-72), Tom Seaver (1971-75), Phil lNiekro (1974-78), Roger Clemens (1986-90), Greg Maddux (1992-1996, Pedro Martinez (1992-96). Randy Johnson (1998-2002) Oh Nolan Ryan's best five year peak between 1973-77 was 27.5, was 60th best of the post 1920 era. By these standards Ryan is a joke. He belongs in the HOF for his unique accomplishments but he is no more the G.O.A.T than I am. And Satchel Paige was amazing, In 474 innings in the MLB he had a 10.2 WAR and showed dominance when he helpedthe Cleveland Indians win the 1948 World Series. He MLB career spanned 42-47 with and exhibition when he was 59. He is most deserving .
Agreed, Lefty, like many of his era threw over 300 innings a couple times, led the league in innings pitched 5 times, played for sh!t phillies teams his first few years after his trade from Cards, won over 300 games, could hit, field, and finish the game.....Dave Parker, would shake in his cleats knowing Lefty's slider was coming....oh, and I think he won 4 Cy awards?? Just because a trophy was named after Cy Young is a pretty weak argument. With no video or any other evidence, seems pretty silly. Geg Maddux should definitely be on this list over a closer. When I got through the first half I wasn't surprised you hadn't listed him yet because he's much better than that and thought for sure he would be #1. It's pretty crazy not to have what many, many people considered the greatest ever. If anyone thinks Cy Young is the best ever they clearly have holes in their baseball knowledge. The guy pitched in an era where most of the batters he was facing had other jobs and it was much, much easier back when he played. He had a lot of wins but he also had a shitload of losses. Just because the award for best pitcher each year is named after him doesn't mean he is the best ever, it just means he was really good as one of the best known earliest pitchers.
I agree, I guess this guy just thought he had to, because the award is named after him, it was also the dead ball era, balls, were beat to death, and kept in the game, hitters were hitting sponge balls, same with Walter Johnson....he's guessing at his greatness....maybe, have a list of best deadball era pitchers, vs. a more modern list of pitchers.....Lefty Carlton wasn't too bad either....
Spahn, Carlton, Clemens, Glavine by merit of being good at bat too. Seaver needs to be a lot higher and Cy Young is the plumber era c'mon these 19th century guys would be embarrassed today
I don't take the "plumber" argument seriously, it's just a low IQ analysis. The greats of the past still had to put the work in to dominate their eras. They also did not have the modern luxuries and privalages of these new players. If these modern players are so great, why do we have to disrespect the past in order to praise them? We souldn't have to do that.
I’m a new sub and I play MLB the show a lot and I use Mario Mariana Rivera and I was wondering why the cutter was his main pitch and nobody could hit it😂 at least it’s just a dominant pitch for him
Whatever way you did this list it definitely is not the best way to do it. I am just going to use one stat for all ten of these guys to show Lefty Grove is better than all but one Grove versus Gibson: Grove had nine ERA titles to Gibson's one. Grove had a 113.3 bWAR in 3940.2 innings; Gibson had 81.7 in 3884 innings. Grove versus Seaver: Grove led the league in ERA nine times to Seaver's three. In 842 more innings than Grove Seaver had a 7.2 lower bWAR and he had a 1.27 ERA+ to Grove's 148. Also I have Seaver number eight (8) on my list, but no match for Grove. Grove versus Pedro Martinez: Grove won nine ERA titles to Martinez five they happen to have both pitched 2827 innings, Martinez in his career Grove in 11 seasons from 1928-39 (excluding a sore arm in 1934 Here is comparison for the 2827 innings: .............................Grove....Martinez Win-Lost Recprd..235-82.....219-100 ERA........................2.73.......2.93 ERA+......................168........154 ERA titles..................8............5 WAR........................95.7.......86.1 WAR oer 250............846......7.61 Grove versus Randy Johnson: Grove had a 9.8 advantage o WAR over Johnson 113.3 to 103.5 in 195 fewer innings. For the rest of his career Grove had 60.2 WAR in 2257 innings. And Grove had almost twice the Black Ink as Koufax and a 148 ERA+ to Koufax's 131. Walter Johnson should probably be number one and Lefty Grove number two. Mariano is a releif pitcher an there are probably four or five guys on this list of ten that would have been better reliever than Rivera, though hs is the relief GOAT Nolan Ryan on a top ten list is a joke. Cy Young was a great pitcher an deservs to be in the top ten, but the first great pitchers in baseball history was Kid Nichols; Cy Young was better but came a year or so later.
Too bad a "top ten" list has only 10 spaces, but one pitcher who often gets overlooked in lists like this is Juan Marichal, one of the greatest of all time.

Good video but Why is Steve Carlton consistently left off these lists? How many of these 1/4 billion dollar FNGs have ever thrown a complete game? Or hit a GS? NONE?
The only big issue I have is the inclusion of Mariano Rivera. Every relief pitcher is a failed starter. And Rivera was no different. Some others that could have been considered are Christy Mathewson, Satchel Paige, Bob Feller and Lefty Grove.
There is no way Pedro was better than Bob Gibson. Also, Greg Maddox has more wins than ANY PITCHER FROM THE MODERN ERA. He has more wins than Rocket, yet he never used performance enhancing drugs. Nuff said...
Ryan won a Series his rookie year with the Miracle Mets. And yes, you’re wrong. He’s number one, even with no “Greatest Cy Young” award. Do you think Bill Russell is the greatest basketball player of all time? Just because an award is named something because they were there the earliest to do it doesn’t mean they’re the best.
Cy Young and Bill Russell were both better at their respective sports than Nolan Ryan who is without question the most over-rated pitcher in MLB history
You lose your credibility with Ryan . He was a compiler. You made second,he wasn’t always as high as second on his team. Certainly not in his leagues. In the AL Palmer was always better. In the NL Seaver, Gibson, marichal, Jenkins were all better than. Ryan has the sexy stats.
Absolutely. If adding Ryan was a joke then in one sense it was funny, but that man does not deserve to be in any top ten except the ten most over-rated players in MLB history.
Yes Nolan was a compiler but when talking about the most dominant pitcher of all time Nolan has the: Most strikeouts 5th of all time in innings pitched Fewest hits given up every 9 innings by any pitcher Most no hitters Most one hitters Most two hitters Most three hitters 324 career wins (He only lost 292 games because in all the teams he played he had no fucking run support he kept losing games where he legit gave up 1-2 runs, pitching thr entire game and lost because the offense couldn’t score.
I realize any top ten list is one persons opinion and is subjective. You can argue Clemens is out because of steroids but leaving Maddux off is blasphemy. This list is weak AF
Wow. It's difficult to tell what criteria you are using. But your knowledge of how a pitcher prevents runs is severly lacking. We have a lot of statistical tools in our bag now, but counting stats is not one that is relied on. Young and Ryan? No. Just no. My #1 is Pedro. His 7 year stretch from 1997-2003 he carried a 2.20 ERA. Right in the middle of the steroid era when offenses exploded. Nolan Ryan... When will you people learn.
@@christiansoldier77 Bill James did a great comparison between Pedro and Kofax. Pedro won. Remember, Pedro pitched in the steroid era. But taking Sandy first is no crime. Incredible talent.
@@TK0_23_ Koufax played in a more offensive era . Plus he pitched way more innings and complete games so he had more quality wins than pedro who would just pitch 5 or 6 innings and get a win So clearly Koufax was better
You can be serious with list. You left off Warren Spahn. He won 363 games and a career ERA of 3.09. He had 13 twenty games seasons. He lost three years off of his young career serving in the Army in WW 2. Spahn served as Combat Engineer and was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. If not for those years in the Army he more than likely would have won 400 games. 363 wins versus 245 losses.
The service is not important to this list....it's not a sentimental, he served, he deserves list....but, that being said, yes, he is deserving, as a pitcher, not as an army veteran.....
@@tedsilversyeager840 Perhaps. But tell me with a straight face that Spahn was not a much better pitcher than Ryan. Warren Spahn was one of the finest lefties of all time behind only Lefty Grove then Randy Johnson and Clayton Kerhaw.
@@JosephEshleman Don't know, I only saw Spahn pitch at the very end of his career, but, that being said, I'd go with him, you're right! Kershaw would not make my top tier list, Johnson would, along with "Lefty".....and Maddox wouldn't make my list either.....

He put him in the video, TH-cam just copyright claimed the part of the video. He literally explained that
Spahn, Carlton, Clemens, Glavine by merit of being good at bat too.
Uhhhh... Greg Maddux was a fucking wizard. Make an addendum after some research, and maybe ill follow
If you put Koufax at number 5 your list is wrong. Koufax was the best pitcher ever. No one was close.
idk how you came to that. MAYBE Grover Alexander had a better 5 year run willing almost 100 games in 3 years
Randy at 7 is criminal. Great video though.
he won a world series with the 69 mets.
Whitey Ford.
Maddux
Yaz was in the American League so Bob Gibson never pitched against him in the regular season.
You could really put these 10 pitchers in any order.
I’m a new sub and I play MLB the show a lot and I use Mario Mariana Rivera and I was wondering why the cutter was his main pitch and nobody could hit it😂 at least it’s just a dominant pitch for him
Whatever way you did this list it definitely is not the best way to do it. I am just going to use one stat for all ten of these guys to show Lefty Grove is better than all but one
Grove versus Gibson: Grove had nine ERA titles to Gibson's one.
Grove versus Pedro Martinez: Grove won nine ERA titles to Martinez five they happen to have both pitched 2827 innings, Martinez in his career Grove in 11 seasons from 1928-39 (excluding a sore arm in 1934 Here is comparison for the 2827 innings:
.............................Grove....Martinez
Win-Lost Recprd..235-82.....219-100
ERA........................2.73.......2.93
ERA+......................168........154
ERA titles..................8............5
WAR........................95.7.......86.1
WAR oer 250............846......7.61
Grove versus Randy Johnson: Grove had a 9.8 advantage o WAR over Johnson 113.3 to 103.5 in 195 fewer innings. This is a list of the top 20pitchers all time on Black Ink (finishing first in the league) in the crucial categories of Wins, Winning Percentage, ERA, ERA+ Strikeouts, Strikeouts per game (SPG) (FIP (fielding independent pitching) WHIP, SO/Walk ratio and WAR for pitchers; Here is the list.
..............................W.W%. ER..A. ERA+ SO.SPG FIP.WHIP SO/W WAR/P
........................................................................................Black Ink Tot
Walter Johnson 6 2 5 6 12 7 6 9 7 9 69
Lefty Grove 4 5 9 9 7 5 8 5 8 8 68
Roger Clemens 4 3 7 8 5 3 8 3 4 7 52
Randy Johnson 1 4 4 6 9 9 6 3 1 6 49
Chrty Mathewson 4 1 5 6 4 1 8 4 9 5 47
Satchel Paige 1 3 3 2 5 8 6 6 9 2 45
Dazzy Vance 2 0 3 3 7 8 7 3 8 4 45
Cy Young 5 2 2 2 2 0 7 7 11 6 44
Pete Alexander 6 1 5 4 6 2 4 5 3 6 42
Pedro Martinez 1 3 5 5 3 5 5 6 4 3 40
Sandy Koufax 3 2 5 2 4 6 6 4 3 2 37
Tom Seaver 3 1 3 3 5 6 4 3 3 3 34
Rube Waddell 1 1 2 3 6 8 5 1 1 3 31
Nolan Ryan 0 0 2 2 11 12 1 2 1 0 31
Clayton Kershaw 3 1 5 4 3 2 2 4 2 3 29
Greg Maddux 4 1 4 5 0 0 4 4 3 3 28
Justin Verlander 4 3 2 3 5 1 0 4 3 3 28
Carl Hubbell 3 2 3 3 1 1 1 6 5 2 27
Bob Feller 6 1 1 0 7 5 1 2 1 3 27
Warren Spahn 8 1 3 2 4 0 1 4 0 1 24
Now Randy Johnson i a first rate HOFer and deserving to be higher on the list, but not as
high as Grove
Grove versus Koufax: Koufax had a 53.1 WAR for his career in 2324.1 innings; Grove had 53.1 for WAR in 1683.2 innings from 1928-33. For the rest of his career Grove had 60.2 WAR in 2257 innings. And Grove had almost twice the Black Ink as Koufax and a 148 ERA+ to Koufax's 131.
Walter Johnson should probably be number one and Lefty Grove number two.
Mariano is a releif pitcher an there are probably four or five guys on this list of ten that would have been better reliever than Rivera, though hs is the relief GOAT
Nolan Ryan on a top ten list is a joke.
Cy Young was a great pitcher an deservs to be in the top ten, but the first great pitchers in baseball history was Kid Nichols; Cy Young was better but came a year or so later.
Pedro is number 1. 2 through 10 is up to you.
Too bad a "top ten" list has only 10 spaces, but one pitcher who often gets overlooked in lists like this is Juan Marichal, one of the greatest of all time.
No Clayton kershaw is crazy bro
Correction; Nolan Ryan won the World Series with the 69 Mets!!
I thought Nolan Ryan won a world series in 69 with the Mets
Nolan Ryan won the World Series with the Mets
bro literally was looking for a video without an AI voice i skipped like 3 other ones to find yours and you were over here asking your fans if they wanted you to ditch the AI voice. i'm subscribed now and can't wait for you to make more content. maybe a video about my brewers if you haven't lately? thanks!
I selected all notifications
Johnson was a right hander
Christy Matheson
Guy is wrong. He didn't throw his cutter that often 😅 Just a quick search tells you that about Rivera.
I’m switching Pedro out and switching in Satiel Paige.
Agree. Satchel Page
Lol pedro at 8.
And greg maddux..
TH-cam made me remove that part...
No Maddux, no Clemens, no sense
Good video but
Why is Steve Carlton consistently left off these lists? How many of these 1/4 billion dollar FNGs have ever thrown a complete game? Or hit a GS?
NONE?
Greg maddux is better than half the players on that list!
The only big issue I have is the inclusion of Mariano Rivera. Every relief pitcher is a failed starter. And Rivera was no different. Some others that could have been considered are Christy Mathewson, Satchel Paige, Bob Feller and Lefty Grove.
No Maddux?
There is no way Pedro was better than Bob Gibson. Also, Greg Maddox has more wins than ANY PITCHER FROM THE MODERN ERA. He has more wins than Rocket, yet he never used performance enhancing drugs. Nuff said...
I would take Maddox over Martinez and Seaver any day of the week.
Says you
No Mathewson or Grove?
This is laughable.
You skipped number 6 LOL 🤣😂😁
TH-cam made me remove that part it's very dumb.
Those are great pitchers but I don’t agree on some of them you don’t have years decades and it’s just not enough of substance
There’s no way Nolan Ryan was better than Seaver,Gibson and Koufax.
New religion could ever be better than Sandy, Steve Carlton or Greg Maddox
No Greg Maddux? Then I'm sorry but you don't know what you are talking about, period.
Not a bad list but id pit roger clemens instead of perdro he simply had better stats and more success
Yes Nolan was a compiler but when talking about the most dominant pitcher of all time Nolan has the:
Most strikeouts
5th of all time in innings pitched
Fewest hits given up every 9 innings by any pitcher
Most no hitters
Most one hitters
Most two hitters
Most three hitters
324 career wins
(He only lost 292 games because in all the teams he played he had no fucking run support he kept losing games where he legit gave up 1-2 runs, pitching thr entire game and lost because the offense couldn’t score.
@@JosephEshlemansays you opinion
@@JosephEshlemangee ryan always pitched against other teams ace. Whats up wit that?😅
I realize any top ten list is one persons opinion and is subjective. You can argue Clemens is out because of steroids but leaving Maddux off is blasphemy. This list is weak AF
Nolan Ryan not having a Cy Young Award is like Stanley Kubrick not having an Academy Award. Injustice.
@TK0_23_3 Best pitcher was Koufax then Johnson and then Pedro
@@christiansoldier77 Bill James did a great comparison between Pedro and Kofax. Pedro won. Remember, Pedro pitched in the steroid era. But taking Sandy first is no crime. Incredible talent.
@@TK0_23_ Koufax played in a more offensive era . Plus he pitched way more innings and complete games so he had more quality wins than pedro who would just pitch 5 or 6 innings and get a win So clearly Koufax was better
Warren Spahn. Thirteen 20 win seasons. Lost 4 years during the WWII. I tip my hat to him.
Thank you for no AI voice. I click off immediately if I hear AI voice.
A list of the ten greatest pitchers that does not include Lefty Grove is a joke.
I agree with you
You cant have Mariano on list for starting pitchers . The best Closer for me is Dennis Eckersley
Rivera, a big no....not even close.....for a reliever, okay, but not on this list...1283 IP, that's 4 years of Carlton IP.....
Steve Carlton? Your list is asinine.
Ryan is nowhere near top ten all time
Correct, and not a real big game pitcher!
Really bad picks. Truthfully.
I’d have Pedro higher on the list considering he was facing batters at the peak of the steroid era.
Rayn did in 1969 with the mets😅
