I gotta say I appreciate the Meren Upping the Average Joey did, it's influenced how my Meren deck is played and I find that my deck has higher synergy and recovery speed because of it. Thanks Joey for the graveyard fun! :D
Joey is a man after my own heart! There's no better feeling than the comfort of knowing that even if all your creatures die, it's all part of the plan. Using graveyards and life as a resource is just so much fun.
Played standard, limited, vintage, and recently started with commander. Up to now, I wasn’t able to find a play style that I constantly craved to go back to. Thanks to you Joey, I finally discovered it, and it feels great! #necro4tw🔥
I really like Joey's point about balancing reanimation targets and ways of reanimating them. I run a Rakdos Chainer deck, and finding the right amount of Animate Deads to put in can be tricky, and you absolutely need them because Chainer is really good at filling the yard, but needs a lot of help pulling stuff out. It's about cheating it out, not hardcasting an 8-drop.
I agree with Joe. Resilience is also what sparked my love towards graveyard strategies. My friend had a deck that constantly killed all of my creatures on the board, and one day i though: "If they have to die, how can I bring them back, or benefit from this?" Basically Muldrotha and Gyrus are my forever love now
This has been my favorite play style since my very first EDH deck, revolving around Ghave, using him as a sac outlet for cards like Yosei and kokusho, and a token generator as fodder for cards like victimize and dread return. The strat got out of hand when Mikaeus the Unhallowed hit the scene, letting Ghave remove those undying counters from Yosei when it came back to play from Mikaeus’ ability~
The whole, "cheating by the rules" thing really spoke to me. I had a B/W/G dredge deck back when Griselbrand was standard legal.... Throwing reanimation effects with flashback into the yard with 100% Angus beef while at the same time keeping the lands in your hand.... Phew, good times!
Squee (the Immortal) for mono-red junkyard brew, and Rona (Disciple of Gix) for a Dimir junkyard brew. Both are pretty dang fun. Rona recurring The Eldest Reborn over and over is some kind of hilarious, and seeing Squee run a ramshackle recycling plant just warms my heart as it sets the rest of the world on fire.
Also, funniest thing I ever saw another Muldrotha player do was play Bojuka Bog when I had an enchantment that says all targets are chosen randomly...he exiled his own graveyard - he still won, too. 😂
I have a Challenge the stats for you. Dragon Wings doesn't see enough play in Jhoira of the Ghitu decks. For a commander that wants to cheat out big creatures like Eldrazi titans and Blightsteel Colossus. This version of Jhoira can clean out your for two mana per card. That can eat your hand up quickly. The fact that Dragon Wings as cycling, means it's ability to be cycled as a card replacement and also give you the ability to have one of your big creatures of 6 mana value or more gain flying and have haste from suspend. This is a sneaky way to give aviation for a possible player ending attacks.
I would love to see Joey play a Lurrus deck (Lurrus as commander, not companion). I have a theory that Lurrus is the most straight up powerful Orzhov commander, been testing for a few months.
With zulaport cutthroat something i noticed is that people know how dangerous he is and how easy it is to go infinate and people will spend an exile to get rid of him so i put blood artist in there as well. Samer thing goes for demons diciple and plaguecrafter. Always helps to have one in hand if the one in rotation gets the boot
I wish White had more mass styles of recursion. They have resurrection and a couple of other good spells for reviving *one* creature, but there are few to none that revive more than one (Reveillark is the only one I can think of and it has restrictions)
cards like tutors and entomb..they're great yes undeniably powerful but i feel like when i use them i either get what i wanted and win in one turn or i paint a target on my head. I prefer card draw and play with what i have. will i control the board and take their sacrificed creatures for my own, will i ping them with zulaport or will gary come out and give me 70 life and wipe the table. every game is a little different and thats what i love about graveyard decks (at least the way i build them) i always have a different combo and my opponants never know where im going with it.
As an Orzhov player I fully agree. Graveyard recursion, draining your opponents life away and gaining it all making them sacrifice stuff, sacrificing to gain knowledge, sacrificing for mana. using ghosts and zombies to torment my opponents I love it all. too bad there isn't much ramp in black or white. WotC fix white in commander please.
@@marvin5342 that's definitely green. Black has some really good ramp. But green has the best. Cabal stronghold, cabal coffers, and rituals are good ramp.
@@marvin5342 white needs some better ramp and card draw. Dawn of hope and smothering tithe are a good start. Also cabal coffers and urborg are really expensive and hard to justify for people on a budget. There should be cheaper options for players. I think black should have the cabal and ritual type ramp. The more black you have the more mana you can create, or the more you sacrifice the more you can create. Some decks I really can't run rituals or nikana, I have a Lurrus of the dream den that runs a crypt ghast because the theme of the deck is extort.
I was surprised I didn't hear my reasons as one of the reasons tbh. I love using the GY because I'm overly sentimental with my cards. I love every one of my cards and want to reuse them throughout a game. I also get sad when someone immediately counters or removes the dude I've been working up to. Reanimation and recursion lets me get my stuff out repeatedly and I love it.
This is honestly the video where I realized my commander playstyle is pretty much "I like to cheat *legally* in Magic"... Like all my decks are doing something that involves cards interacting in ways not really intended by the designers for absolutely ridiculous effects.
I use conrad in my chainer deck and a last resort to win with i think mindclamp (players lose a life when a card leaves the battlefield i havent played ina while sorry) if i cant get the W with gary or kukoshu conrad is always there for an easy 1 turn win

I think Joey needs to revisit this topic in 2024
Bring Joey on game knights
Haha I think it's not fair for Jimmy and Jose :)
Always nice to get graveyard playstyle representation. Got my og Chainer deck, all your graveyards are belong to me!

Yes that would be awesome 😊😃

Joey, you should look into Chainer Dementia Master. Graveyard things but can access your opponents too 😁

Thank goodness for bojuka bog 😁. O and Ashiok
After watching this and Matt's video makes me think about what I like to do in magic... Hmm.
Playing a graveyard deck with recursion is like being able to look at what you want to cast, as long as there is stuff in the yard.
Chainer, dementia master is my favorite deck. My strategies with that deck are down right machiavellian.
