  • "We don’t need to be Nietzscheans to recognize that the quality of our thoughts is related to the vitality of our bodies, or that thinking joyously is a kind of dance. Even Socrates danced, and Plato wrestled."

Shout out from Brazil! I'm a fellow philosopher (metaphysics and epistemology) and I write about BJJ when possible. Your text was one of the best I've seen so far. However, there is an enormous difference from practicing in the US ou Europe, than in Brazil. The philosophy part here is very underdeveloped :/

I like to see philosophy as a type of intellectual combat. Arguements - are ways beliefs assert themselves in the world. They can be used offensively and run unchallenged or defensivpy to justify courses for actions. Some pathways of thinking lead people to get trapped in their own intellectual pretzel, and various great thinkers wrestle with ideas and find out how to get out of them

Idea have positions in relationship to each other, some fluidlynflow into one another and others there is inconsisency.

Vladimir Putin is a devotee of Jiu-Jitsu; Black Belt as I recall. Observers have noted that he fights the war in Ukraine as well as his geo-political adversaries by employing what he learned in the practice of Jiu-Jitsu. He calmly resists his opponent's efforts to provoke him into lashing out and he persists in carefully marshalling his forces and judiciously expending energy.

I started BJJ almost 10 years ago and I still love it. Of course the excitement ebbs and flows but it gives me so much to wrestle with my buddies and chat about life before putting the suit on and going to work or before spending time with the family.
BJJ academies also suffer from certain pathologies but all in all the guys I met at bjj are much more likely to be my kind of people.
Good on you for getting in with 40. you still have quite a couple of years left where you can train well especially if you have not sustained many injuries in your 20 and 30. One piece of advice … try to do some strength training to minimize the risk of injury.
Good luck on your bjj journey!

And one more tip. Try to to nogi (at least) once a week . It is useful for self defense. But more importantly it will give your fingers a break. The constant gi gripping will take a toll on your fingers over time.

Congrats to you 👏🏻 for taking up the noble Martial path.
It’s not easy but it’s absolutely worth every minute you spend on the mats.

I have just started to practice jujitsu, it is very different from other martial arts such as boxing I trained before, and it's enjoyable. Sometimes I feel jujitsu has a deeper mental or spiritual level, but I am not good at expressing it. Thank you for writing such a good article.

Hey Michael, I was one of the people who recommended Jiu JItsu to you on Twitter, I really am happy to see you are loving it. I have been training myself for about a year, and continue to find more and more depth to the art. I'm favoring leg attacks and back chases, as counters to getting pinned (which as you now know happens often.) Hope you keep it up!
I also got a minor injury in the beginning (a broken middle finger) and it nags, but the sport is so rewarding that its worth continuing. I've found it hard to find another activity that compares in scale of spirit, body, and mind connection. I love the way you described the connection to Heidegger, whom I am not totally familiar with. I found the "shape rotating, wordcel" dialectic to be something I've navigated my entire life.

Great video, and great topic. I started playing chess more or less at the same time that I was starting BJJ, and learning both at the same time made it very clear that they were very similar on the intelectual level, but the physical conditioning required to roll against your opponent while at the the same time thinking about all the possible outcomes while rolling is much more rewarding on all levels.
I had also never really thought about its relationship to philosophy in this way, but it makes complete sense.
Martial Arts discipline you in a way that most intelectual activities don't. You may read all you want on BJJ, and memorize all the moves and the spirit of it, but its on the mats, with broken ribs and busted joints, that you test what you know. Philosophy is best practiced this way too, I believe - lived, not just idealised.

Very good observations. As a former academic (PhD in humanities) at the beginning of my BJJ Journey I also tried to explain BJJ to myself. But now as a BJJ brown belt I have more and more questions and not so many answers ;) Cheers from Poland
