Great video Justin! When I first learned about the Ed.D program at South, your videos popped up. I’m finishing my Bachelor’s at WGU, and will be enrolling at UMPI in the spring for my MA. That’s where I thought I’d stop until I discovered your videos. You’re definitely an inspiration and because of you, I’ll be pursuing my Ed.D after my masters!

Wow, thank you for sharing that! Sometimes it's difficult to gauge the impact of sharing my story and tips. So it's nice to know :) I'll be curious how the UMPI MA program goes. I've heard good things about their CBE model. Wishing you lots of positivity as you continue on your academic journey Nick

I have been watching your videos since halfway through your last WGU degree. I appreciate your insight and transparency about your educational journey. Learning is a lifetime pursuit! A doctoral program is likely out of reach or budget at my age, but it is fantastic to hear about your learning objectives and exploration process. Congratulations on your journey so far and working through your roadblocks. I have just one comment from this video. Your light was blinding, reflecting off of your glasses. As a videographer, I recommend placing your light at 45 degrees above your head and 30 degrees offset from your camera. This will create a pleasing contrast on your facial features and avoid any reflections that can appear on camera. Otherwise, I am excited every time I see a video of yours pop up in my feed, as it helps challenge me to take on more educational projects and gain a better understanding of the different approaches people use to learn.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment Jeremy. And I completely agree about the lighting issue. I didn't notice it until after I recorded it, and I thought, "Oh jeeze, maybe I shouldn't post the video." Your suggestion is helpful, I'll definitely remember to do it next time. We could use more helpful people like you out there!

    Justin,
When you did your formative assessments, did you submit them in a word document or text format? If so, what was your typical word count?

That's a good question. I used to submit in the textbox at the start of the program, but an instructor asked me to resubmit as Word documents. So, now I just submit everything, both formatives and summatives, in Word format following APA guidelines.
About the word count, it varies quite a bit. Some formatives are as simple as a mind map while others are more extensive like a full literature review. For my last course (a specialization course), I looked through all my 12 formatives, and they averaged around 1500-1600 words, which included the title page and references. These assignments ranged from 400 to 2500 words. It's possible that I elaborate more than others in my writing (or so I've noticed). Some students might be better at being more concise.
