    Great video, Dan. I'm 20 years old, and just graduated community college with a gen-ed associate's degree. My current plan is to go into WGU's Software Engineering program, but I will be looking into their cybersecurity program, too. I love that you gave us an example of how somebody who was young and had relatively little work experience was able to do WGU and be successful at it. Most of the people that do WGU have already worked 5+ years in the field and just need a degree for whatever reason, so it gives me a lot of confidence seeing people like you making it work for them, too.
    Hope you were able to nail a killer job!

    • @vmxdla2025
      @vmxdla2025 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not Necessarily. Most people DO NOT have experience in the field they are getting the degree for. If you take third party classes for college credit you can do 70% of the WGU classes before enrolling so you can finish in a semester

    I’m going to switch next semester from my in person university to WGU. I’m going back to Amazon. WGU accepts the $5200 tuition reimbursement for as many classes you can take during the year. Instead of that $5200 only paying for 2.5 classes. I felt like I needed in person. But I ended up taking my business, Python, and SQL online anyway! This will be so much faster.

    What would someone recommend for me between WGU Comp Sci or WGU Software Eng? I just graduated high school this year, and I took a gap semester but am looking into WGU. I want to do something with coding and am very interested in web development right now, but I want to keep my options open (not just web development) for the future. I don't want to not be able to apply to some job because I don't have a comp sci degree. Software Eng seems more fun and enjoyable, but will skipping the math come back to haunt me later? Before deciding whether to do a computer science or software engineering degree at WGU or even WGU, I have several questions.
    What is the difference between the software engineering degree (I would do the Java Track) and the computer science degree at WGU? I see many differences, and I would like to know the nuances between the two.
    a. Why does the computer science degree require way more math than the software engineering one? The classes later in the degree don't seem to use this math too much, so why does it require calculus one and discrete math one and two when software engineering only requires algebra? How is this math utilized, and will I miss out on not having it if I go for the software engineering degree?

    b. When using the compare button on the main page, why does the computer science degree only take 24 months to complete (on average), while the software engineering degree takes 35 months to complete (on average)? The more challenging classes seem to be in the computer science degree (calculus and discrete math), so the two extra courses that software engineering has shouldn't take an additional 11 months. How long could I expect it to take for me as a full-time student?

    c. On that same page, it says that the average salary increase for someone with a WGU computer science degree is $17,691 compared to only $10,019 for someone with a WGU software engineering degree. Why is this? What is the significant difference in jobs between these two degrees that would cause such a disparity in salary increases? What are jobs that one would be able to get that other wouldn't (and vise versa)?

    d. Overall, what is the difference between these two degrees?
    e. Which degree would you recommend? Which would look better for employers or graduate universities if I tried to get into the coding space? Which would look better for graduate schools? I would probably be going for a master's in computer science if I go for my master's since it's hard to find a master's in software engineering online (or something still related to computers but not computer science).

    • @herbertscott9575
      @herbertscott9575 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Simply judging by your interest in web development, I would tell you to do their "Software Engineering" degree.
      Yes, skipping math will only haunt you because its harder to retain information as you get older, simple biology.
      The overt differences in a simple explanation is that Computer Science is an actual science that's derived from mathematics and Software Engineering is an industry term that some schools use to differentiate the math/physics heavy Compsci Degree from their CODING heavy "Software Engineer" Program. In academia, you will see mostly "Computer Science", "Computer Engineering" or "Information Technology" So the confusion is not only in what is actually taught in the discipline but in the reality that these certain schools, like WGU have crafted an even more niche degree for those seeking a direct path to CODING jobs.
      a. Computer Science was originally a MATHEMATICS degree. See the requirements for a math degree. Science majors are expected to go on and get their master and Ph.d's. So, ALL the math for computing since the beginning of time is a requirement to be an actual computer scientist. As the technologies improved and the computer revolution took place, this became the most common degree for those working in the field. Now "computers" are in everything. An even more scientific understanding is needed. Simply put, math is behind all the languages and coding used but its calculated in an instant. All of the original Nasa people were Math/Physics majors. Now we're in the A.I revolution...
      b. Going back to the rigor, respect and industry standard of a Computer Science degree, I think the people pursing it are more math/science astute, more serious/disciplined, have a specific goal within the industry and are probably already in the industry.
      c. Again, this is more of an industry stat based on WGU's graduates. They have more determined, skilled and serious people going after that degree...probably with the specific goal to command more money. Someone doing specifically "Software Engineering" is probably new to the industry and not understanding how to command more money or that Computer Science is simply a more common degree in the field.. The Computer Science major is going to be able to circumnavigate the entire industry(especially with a Masters/Ph.d)...as long as their knowledge is up to date. Learning Linux Admin on top of Devops can get you that extra 7k tho.
      d. Math(Cal 1-3, Discreet Math) and Physics...remember, think beyond computers. How would having specific Physics knowledge control Rocket, a Tesla or Save Energy on a Washing Machine? That's computer Science major stuff. Those findings would be translated for teams of coders to make the machine do what we want it to do. Also, A computer Science degree is the default degree for certain team lead and manager roles in some companies policies, not all.
      e. Computer Science for the Masters and tract of being a Scientist. Software Engineering if you want to be a coding wizard and able to tackle any type of project. Hopefully now you see why you cant find a Software Engineering Masters Online..most just have certifications or the experience in the field or a Computer Science Degree.
      To sum it all up...computer science is its own specialized field...however the entire industry request and honor it as a generalist type of degree for engineers, programmers, coders as well. Software Engineering is a subniche of Computer science but is broad as well as there are various different languages. You're in the A.I era now, take that in consideration with your studies too. Always study the industry trends and think ahead 5-20+ years.

      @@danigan9564 I have a question. If WGU doesn't have a GPA, how come it has a grading policy about whether you succeed or fail? I've been doing a lot of research and I feel like I want to get a bachelor's in either IT or English in less than a year at WGU and I want to use the degree to get me into a masters in library science at a state university in my home state as a admission requirement. The masters program says I would need a bachelors from a regionally accredited school with a GPA of 3.0 or greater

    How do you feel about the IT management Business degree? I’m not a school person either and seeing you do it motivated me bro. I currently go to an online college right now and going to transfer to WGU. I’m thinking about taking courses at Sophia first too since I heard it’s easier on there. Hopefully I can finish in one term too. What were some study tips you did everyday?

    • @danigan9564
      @danigan9564  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't have much knowledge regarding that degree cuz I never took it but its probably good! Sophia will most def help you lessen the amount of classes you gotta take once you start wgu. Study tips- use note cards, write things down on paper, say things out loud to help with retention. Be resourceful! Utilize reddit and search up class codes like "D234 wgu reddit" so look for postings of people who did the same class you are working on and see what they did. Pace yourself when studying. Take breaks and go for walks so you don't get burned out
