  • Pawpaw and Persimmon Planting Demonstration by Tom Wahl
    October 19, 2019 • Fairfield, Iowa
Pawpaws and Persimmons are not only delicious, they’re fruit crops that grow well here in Southeast Iowa. This video will show you how to plant and grow both types of fruit trees. Tom Wahl, expert grower from Red Fern Farm, demonstrates proper siting, spacing, preparation and planting of Pawpaw and Persimmon trees.
This demonstration workshop was held at Prairie Song Farms in Fairfield, Iowa.

Nice job Tom. I’m growing a couple of Paw Paw in WV. They are 5-6 year old and about 6’ in height.
I planted them in partial shade of a large maple tree. We Cut the maple tree back last summer and the Paw Paw trees really started taking off. I can’t wait to see how they do this spring and summer with all of the new sunlight they will be receiving.

Soil touching the trunk absolutely does not kill all trees and with the propensity of pawpaw to sucker, I’d imagine you could mound soil all along the branch to get suckers of desirable seedling trees.

Try planting a pawpaw tree using the E.G.W. Blueprint tree planting method !
20 times more growth, within 3 years, by weight ! And earlier flowering !

Have you actually tried this on Asimina triloba? They tend to not like high Calcium. It's also a tap root plant & rock is a growth barrier.

Have you had voles dig under the mulch and fabric and eat your roots?

Does that tree shelter help the baby tree to grow faster or is it there to simply protect the tree from winds and deers?

Last year I bought 20 acres, last week I bought a persimmons tree. Then yesterday I discovered I got like 10 fully grown ones and 10 baby ones growing in the woods. Not that cool though because I think they are all male.
