I think the hardest part for Rusty was to avoid at all costs to let the prosecutor having suspicion on his family. He had to incriminate himself enough to maintain the focus on him and at the same time not incriminate himself too much to not been seen guilty. He did well in my opinion when he went visiting a second time the killer at the prison knowing the conversation would be recorded and retained against him.

Definitely some plot holes and things that don’t make perfect sense. But a thrilling ride over all. What I appreciated most at the very end was how differently I felt about Tommy. He went from the plotting, evil villain…to just a lonely, socially awkward dude with a cat, who cared about Carolyn even though she maybe didn’t care for him back. And he was actually onto something with Rusty after all, his intuitions were partially correct considering Rusty tied her up (which is pretty insane/psychopathic if you truly think about it). Tommy ends up being the normal dude just trying to do the right thing.

Hear me out -- The onlyyyy thing missing is that I think it would've made more sense for the brother and sister to both have ties to C's murder. The daughter snapped, yes. And in hindsight, the clues were there and subtly planted throughout the episodes, beautifully.
But Rusty's son was watching C for a while and was there the night of the murder. It's almost too perfect that they didn't cross paths at all. It would've made sense if he saw his sister there (or heading there and turned his bike back around to follow her), watched out of curiousity, and then once it all went down (the murder) he would've came in to help his sister cover up. Even if it was just him offering moral support or a "pact" to keep it on the hush between the two of them. After all, they both would've shared similar sentiment on the matter (C being a homewrecker that helped ruin their family, the arrival of a sibling from their father's mistress being hurtful, etc.)
Not to mention, I just think the heads of TWO smart young kids makes more sense for a crime scene that significant to be meticulously left unmarked. Yes, each kid is smart and they are both the children of brilliant parents, one of whom is a decorated lawyer who brings his work home. But they are both still kids. The brother is the eldest teen and seems a bit more grounded. He also carried the secret of the affair longer and moved tactically. The sister is a bit more disassociated and I feel like her brother witnessing the crime, stepping in to help her in her shock, and then them making a sibling-pact would've made more sense.
It would also have tied up beautifully the brother's recurring release of anger throughout the series (when he was banging the hell out of the garage with those balls). Lol! I swear I was waiting for the brother to walk in when the sister finished confessing, to say he was a part of it too. And I was expecting Barbara to slink to the floor and gag/cry some damn more once she realized her whole family was full of crazies and she was the only normie. Lol!

    • @CC_Babblecock
      @CC_Babblecock หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Imo (even though it wasn’t shown), the bro, & probably her own son did see it, that’s why he was enraged at the trial, & why his son got rid of the bike. Maybe I’ll enjoy it more on a rewatch. It’s kinda like every person who accused him of being there, technically now can be believed. The son for sure saw either his dad or sister, he was acting nervous the entire time, & that explains why Jake G got rid of the bike from the trash can. Didn’t want to take any chances.

We saw next to nothing about who Carolyn is. But from what we saw, she was a mother who had abandoned her son, manipulating Rusty to advance her career and an officer of the court who withheld exculpatory evidence to frame a man sending him to prison for murder and needlessly provoking a child by directly threatening her family's cohesion.
    She was a horrible person.

And why was his son there? Just a coincidence? And why did his mother throw away his bicycle?

Carolyn, even though she was the one who was murdered, the series wasn't about her, it was about everything else. It was framed to be about Rusty and his family going through some rough shit. Jaden being the killer is such a poorly executed twist. At no point in the early episodes does the audience get any hints or notions that it could be her. The only clue we get is her conversation about dissociation. I have a hard time believing that this well adjusted well raised girl can suddenly commit murder out of nowhere. At what point in the earlier episodes was Jaden shown to be mentally unstable or emotionally volatile?
A good murder mystery plays fair with its audience and establishes hints that give the audience of fair opportunity to solve the mystery of themselves if they are paying attention. Aside from taking a wild shot in the dark no audience would ever be able to guess that it was the daughter based on how the character was handled.

As there was one week of time for the verdict we all had our theories ready and in someway we did get disappointed.
    1. Rusty coming to the conclusion that Barbara murdered Caroline in those moment of tense is something that doesn’t satisfy his narrative later. He is already shown as impulsive and what he could easily think of in that moment of tense is, the case would turn towards him and the act of tying body like Liam Reynolds did only to navigate the case towards Liam not him as he will be considered as prime suspect.
    2. But major plus of the show on Rusty’s character parse is he have two things to prove one is that he is not guilty of the murder and the other not let Molto or Jury to consider Barbara at any point in the case as she might be more anguish to kill Caroline than anyone else which we also see as the story progresses. But what did the story lack is to have or build events that would lead Rusty to arrive at the conclusion that Barbara might have done it and she is trying to show by playing victim card on herself that she is still there for Rusty thought the journey even when she knew Rusty had affair with Caroline and to prove her innocence which helps to conceal her true self which might have perfectly proved why Rusty came to the conclusion that it’s Barbara like some of us did too.
Because of this, the final revelation of Jaden seemed like out of blue as her character arc is not established and to let the audience understand the motive behind her action. Barbara had enough presence to make us feel how much she had suffered which is not the same case with Jaden.
I even had suspected Molto to have played major role in killing Caroline either all by himself as he has reasons of his own and trying to set the narrative from the beginning that Rusty is the murderer or in accomplice with Barbara who shared the same feeling of hate towards Caroline.
Even with all this, Presumed Innocent is compelling series comprising of wonderful performace by Peter, Ruth, Bill and rest of the cast. Renate looks wonderful in the series even though her screen time is very less, she will definitely grab the attention.
And the showman, Jake is fantastic and gave yet another unforgettable performances of all time. Man it’s so hard to consider him either as innocent or as guilty, which is predominantly due to writing which was taken to another level by Jake.
Kudos to all the writers and directors and technicians involved in this and to have gotten opportunity to bring up season 2.

This ending had a gaping hole in the plot. Rusty arrives to the scene of the crime and was able conclude with high confidence that his wife was the killer? What would give him that confidence? It does't make sense. To arrive at the scene, come to that conclusion and then decide to tie up the body is a HUGE risk to take. AND he was wrong... It just seems like a really foolish thing to do unless it was obvious that it was the wife. I bet if you rewatch the episodes Rusty's performance won't reveal any nuance acting that showed he knew who the killer was the whole time. Also the whole thing about the daughter bringing up the concept of disassociation was a bit on the nose.

I kind of agree, it’s a little foolish he immediately assumed his wife did it.
But I found it interesting that in the final episode, while in bed Rusty is wide awake and just watching Barbara sleep. Almost as if he can’t comfortably sleep beside her.
It reminded me of a past episode where Rusty does the same thing while they’re in bed, but it gives off a different tone given Rusty was the only suspect at that time. I think maybe that was one of the hints but I could be reaching.

      @caffeinatedlizard3593 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

@@eyezam I agreed and noticed this as well, we all just assumed he couldn't sleep because of the case but that's just our assumption, in reality he couldn't sleep because he suspected his wife did it. Logically it couldn't be her son cause most likely the son would have gotten the father to help him cover up the crime. Also the son wouldn't have as much in dept information on the bunny davis case as rusty's wife. Bunny Davis wasn't Carolyn's only case, so to say that her son randomly stumbled through all her cases and just happen to discover that one and be able to tie her up with surgical precision?? Loll like cmon it clearly had to be someone tied to the bunny davis case orr someone who had enough time to study the case files in dept.
Even if the wife tied up Carolyn that would have been a stretch tbh because there's no way she's gonna be able to tie her up exactly like past victims. Only Rusty would be able to tie her up like that

    spoiler:
The show was incredibly captivating, with a plot that kept me guessing until the very end. Each actor and actress delivered outstanding performances that truly deserve recognition. Initially, I suspected the husband, then shifted my suspicions to his wife Barbara, then to Barbara's friend Lorraine, and finally to Carlyon's ex. The revelation of the true culprit was truly shocking, as I never once considered the daughter. The family as a whole was visually stunning, with the husband being very handsome, the wife exuding beauty, the son being gorgeous, and the daughter possessing a unique allure, especially in darker scenes where she appeared almost artificial with darker tone/tan. Their family dynamic was portrayed as cute, wholesome, and aesthetically pleasing. The character played by Jake was brilliantly complex, showcasing a range of emotions and actions throughout the series. From engaging in extramarital affairs to protecting his children and wife, Jake's character development was both intriguing and thought-provoking. Both the father and daughter exhibit psychopathic tendencies, above the family loved each other. He was a controlling individual, fixated not only on his lover (who was very stunning actress as well) but also on his wife. He went to the extent of tracking her car and flew into a rage when he discovered she had shared a random kiss with a man she barely knew, despite openly engaging in an affair with a colleague at work he was deeply connected emotionally and physically lets be honest affair cheating is way worse then once of hook up especially if its kiss (both wrong one is worse than the other) . He displayed hypocrisy by condemning his wife as a monster when he believed she had killed his lover, but defended his daughter's actions as self-defense when he discovered she was responsible, and blamed himself fully for his daughter's actions tbh it was kinda his fault to some extent, the daughter was obsessed with her dad, not in s**xual way, more like he's my daddy I can't lose him to another woman. The wife's failure to leave him upon discovering the affair contributed to the situation, and given his character, it is unlikely he would have allowed her to leave, he was also obsessed with his wife, actually it appears that the wife was also fixated on him, as she was deeply wounded whenever he mentioned his lover in court. Unlike him, she wasn't as crazy or a psychopath, which I believe is the key distinction. I suspect her entire plan was to escape from him in the end of the show (apparently, the holiday was just an excuse, as all her suitcases were packed she was running away as a holiday for herself not even her kids), but she ended up getting caught this was due to the discovery that her daughter is psychopathic, just like him, I guess their all family they need to protect each other, Dad even though crazy he really did love his kids, protected his wife even cared for his lover. It's a truly compelling show.

    - The lawyer woman said they hired detectives to watch Barbara having an affair with the bartender, but they never saw the daughter leaving the house with the death weapon and went to tommy’s house?
    - we didn’t had any clue it could have been the daughter. The build up was to show Tommy might be the killer, but we get a random plot twist? Would have been nice to give clues in the episodes that would lead to the murder caused by the daughter..
-lastly, why was the bike photo scene so important? He drove by, Tommy even wrote “bike” in his notes, but didn’t brought it up at court? Unnecessary scene..

Great way to describe Rusty and Barbara’s interaction in the very end as they both look at each other. Rusty looking at Barbara with love (and a bit of guilt) and Barbara’s look, pretending to be ok and putting a smile for her family but deep down with fear in her eyes. Like the saying goes: “Every time you forgive him, he will love you a little more but you will stop loving him. So the day he loves you the most, you will not feel anything for him anymore”. Deep stuff. I wish we got more of the good times from Rusty and Barbara. Also hope season 2 Even though it’s a new case, includes the Sabich family. I mean, the hell Rusty went through in a way shows his love for Barbara and his family. Can’t way for season 2. One last thing, I haven’t seen Ruth Negga promote the show, or her and Jake together. Wish we had more of the family cast do things together to promote season finale.

    1) In the scene where Rusty finds out about the murder, his family is sitting outside, he finds out while standing behind a patio door. His daughter does not even look at him and continues snacking on the sun lounger. Remember she had just been out in the middle of the night committing murder and cleaning up the crime scene and car.
    2) The scene where Rusty tells his children he had been unfaithful. Later we find out both the children knew about this. They both leave the room looking angry at their father.
    3) Jayden should be going through an internal crisis. She had only just committed murder and knew someone had been back in the house and HOG TIED the dead body.

It's intriguing... Rusty didn't learn anything. He remained a horrible person, doing terrible things to his family and causing them immense pain. In the end, he just covers for his daughter, leaving his wife to bear this pain as well. Rusty is content with how things turned out, decreeing that no one should ever talk about it again. This forces everyone to carry the burden of his affair and a murder in silence.
I suppose the writers wanted to show us just how awful Rusty is, corrupting everyone he comes into contact with.
I would have preferred if the daughter was consumed by guilt and confessed to her parents that she intended to turn herself in. Rusty would then realize he was responsible for the chain of events leading to the murder. It would have been compelling to see him, for once, protect his family by admitting to a crime he didn't commit, showing them he was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice out of love.
Again I get that his character is ultimately a scum bag so that was never in the cards. I'm not saying I didn't like the actual ending... I didn't see if unfolding the the way it did so I guess in that regard they did a fantastic job.

Soo due to this rusty had to conclude the only person with motive and opportunity to kill was his wife.. And.... It was a calculated risk anyway rather than calling the police

      @seanj2370 หลายเดือนก่อน

How did you know besides a guess ? There was literally no part that shows she wasn't home or that she was angry against Carolyn. They showed a little potential among other people, but not her. Horrible writing.

I honestly thought it was the son and the mom was covering for him. (like why would she clean the bike??? and why did the bike later thrown to the trash, especially when the prosecutor circled "bike" when looking at the photos taken the night of the murder.0
Why would the son insist to his dad to plea guilty so soon into the court proceedings????
When Rusty confronted his son for why he was there that night, Barbara stood up for his son, saying Rusty needs to calm down and I should talk to him (son).
As Rusty was waiting in another room, could Barbara and his son be trying to get there story straight.

Holy smokes, what a show! This literally made me lose interest in 'The Boys' and 'House of the Dragon'. Jake is always phenomenal, but wow, were the supporting cast, screenwriters, and directors beyond amazing! I feel like Apple has been financing some really amazing shows that people are sleeping on. Can’t wait for the second season of 'Severance' to come out! 'Presumed Innocent' literally had me on edge and feening for the next episode the whole time 😂.

Great series overall, however (big comma), the proverbial money-shot-reveal was less dramatic boarding on meh. I get the subliminal hints throughout the series and the usual lineup of who actually did it suspects but the aha moment was more pop-its, then firecracker.

Appreciate the summary, great job. A couple of things that you have to suspend (in your mind) to enjoy the ending.
    1. How come Rusty's DNA wasn't on the rope he used to tie up Carolyn? Was this explained. Let me know if I missed it.
    2. How a suburban girl like her going to break into Tommy's "home" not seen and NOT leave any kind of trace evidence left behind. Especially with the printed note?
Still a good movie though. I enjoyed it.

      1. He was wearing gloves
      2. I too think that it doesn't make sense, it's almost like they just want to be so unpredictable about the ending ,so they made the daughter to be the killer , it's a bit underwhelming/ out of the blue / forced and like ''oh.. okay... '' still like the show tho, Jake Gyllenhaal is great as always

I loved the show. Very well done. Although the original Presumed Innocent twist is iconic and essential . It would be as if the remade The Sixth and Bruce Willis wasn’t a ghost. However being that this was a story “ based on” the original, with new characters and altered details it was very entertaining and enjoyable.

I think people with strong families had a different feeling about that ending vs others. When Rusty said “it was self defense” i found that an interest concept to consider. The affair was not innocent. It caused real pain. Can a person defend themselves from a person that threatening their mental health by actions?

I think we all figured it out before the reveal who did it, but what was surprising is how weak the finale was. Tommy Molto actually put on the better closing and the not guilty verdict was actually the biggest surprise.

I hope Barb moves on. You try but it's almost impossible to "unpicture" your spouse with someone else, even 10 years later. Knowing it could happen again or may have and you just don't know cause they did betray vows. And that someone else was preferred over you in ways. You can work and better things, but the images and the triggers don't 💯 go away so I feel for Barb and wish her and Kyle the best.
