I discovered Devine in the last year and although I grew up seeing fragments of the work ( I’m 54) I’m feeling like I missed out on enjoying it in real time, but it’s cinema so we have it forever, now I’m eating up all I can find.
Dawn Davenport destroying the christmas tree because she didn't get her cha cha heels, the mom laying under the tree going "not on Christmas, not on Christmas". "im afraid rats are going to come out and bite my new nylons", I mean some of the lines are just classic.
John just seems like one of the most genuinely happy people. And if he isn't then he clearly looks for the best out of even the most fucked up situation.
Remember: He cut that line in the Christmas scene when Dawn's mother said "You're breaking my heart", and Dawn quips "you're lucky it's not your neck". Pure comedy and such a pity it was dropped .
All those taking about J Hoberman act as if you never had an off day. I don't see any of you doing interview or review work. When you start, then you can say something. You are not the end-all be-all of interviewing. None of you will likely leave *anything* behind when you die. At least this interviewer will and he has made a good living doing this. Everything is subjective. Also: Of this very interview John Waters has said he was thankful to not be asked all the same questions for a trillionth time.
This is a tad bit painful to watch. John looks so at ease. The interviewer looks extremely out of his element and uncomfortable. He asks John questions and isn't even looking in his direction.
i mean, he isnt using the mic properly, but the interviewer seems fine to me? he doesnt seem awkward, he seems pretty relaxed. he's asking interesting questions, getting great stuff out of waters, and articulating himself clearly enough.
Female Trouble is one of the four greatest movies of all time! The others are A Christmas Carol(Alistair Sim) 1950, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Brokeback Mountain!
Can someone help me here? John mentions Margarita (someone), and a cookbook she put out in which she's snarky and says, "You'll never be able to make this!" What's her last name, please? I can't understand him. And where can I get that book?! Thanks!
Does anyone know how to spell the last name of Margarita, the person John mentions at 19:00? I'm trying to search her up but I can't find anything...not sure about the spelling.
i like the interviewer actually. he has some trouble articulating sure but he is opening new avenues of conversation by just treating the interview as a conversation. that, and having seen mondo trasho and multiple maniacs in 1970, thats pretty cool as well
How the "F" did this moderator get this gig? He brings nothing...and asks dunderheaded questions, and wastes a shitload of time agreeing and "ummming" all over the place. As someone who does this as well, and bothers to do my research, this is almost offensive. Right down to this dude slouching and looking like he needs a shower. NOT up to standards that Lincoln Center should be exhibiting.
Almost offensive? He is offensive. I've interviewed many people in my life, and I'm appalled. I f J Hoberman was some college kid, I wouldn't care, but he's an older movie critic, he should know at least how to work a mic, and talk about the film that was screened.
Worst interviewer EVER! John is just as fabulous as always, but this guy questioning him is miserable! In addition to not knowing how to use a microphone, he also can't form a sentence audibly and understandably.
Somehow I think he set the tone. I wasn't there, I wasn't part of it, but I felt awkward watching this. It really is up to the emcee to set the tone and give it some energy, and he seemed to have none.
This dumb ass has a note pad and still asks the most inane and redundant questions possible. Fucking amateurish and embarrassing. This actually pisses me off, as an interviewer/moderator myself.
agreed. he comes across as an unfocused schlub (which is even more obnoxious with a fucking notepad) and hardly spent any time talking about Female Trouble. maybe he’s knowledgeable about film or whatever, but this just shows how that knowledge doesn’t necessarily imply a skill for conversing or interviewing people about film.
I hate when interviewers talk over the guest. This might not have been a good interview with some of these dull “celebrities” but Waters is so charmingly animated. I mean we’re here to listen to John Waters not the interviewer. Lay off the poor guy he was fine. (I didn’t hear a word he said)
Just watched this trash classic again yesterday....Divine was totally bonkers playing both male & female roles, and so were many of the cast 😄 Dawn Davenport's star-making "performance art" kept me in stitches!
An interview with John Waters about his greatest film... and they chose this guy? Any number of my friends can recite any line from Female Trouble, and he seems like he didn't even pay attention to it. What an insult.
Josie cotton who sang johnny r u queer wanted to cover the theme song female trouble but waters turned her down, big mistake john she is also a huge cult figure and I would have loved to hear her take on the song
Sorry but that guy interviewing John is just distracting! He looks like he never takes a shower, it's DISTRACTING. Talking about Max Sennett and such.....come on, get someone who KNOWS what he's talking about to interview John Waters and talk about FEMALE TROUBLE.
The poor interviewer sometimes looks as if he’s struggling just as hard to focus on squirrels chasing acorns inside his head as he is trying to focus on John. He’s mostly fine, but one wonders if he’s having little LSD flashbacks from the ‘70s at various intervals.
Very kind of the interviewer to have rolled out of bed for this.
Interviewers are almost always hacks
No idea who he is but looks a mess and can barely speak into the microphone.
I really respect the style to be honest
He's still sleepwalking, though
Yep, he took after you...

the interviewer is a real genius.... he gestures with the mic so you can't hear a word he says. Probably just as well.
There are few in the world as charming as John Waters.
Dawn Davenport destroying the christmas tree because she didn't get her cha cha heels, the mom laying under the tree going "not on Christmas, not on Christmas". "im afraid rats are going to come out and bite my new nylons", I mean some of the lines are just classic.
“Dawn dear please, not on Christmas!”
John just seems like one of the most genuinely happy people. And if he isn't then he clearly looks for the best out of even the most fucked up situation.
Did the interviewer just wake up five minutes before showtime?
The movie is iconic. I loved Mink Stole. Of course, Divine was supremely superb. Loved Edith Massey.
I wish Waters would make another movie
+Peter Gatt i vow that i will exact vengeances on innocent puppies and chinese concubines if he does not!
Remember: He cut that line in the Christmas scene when Dawn's mother said "You're breaking my heart", and Dawn quips "you're lucky it's not your neck". Pure comedy and such a pity it was dropped .
Cookie Mueller is always my favorite Dreamlander. Love you Cookie!!! ❤ All of them were fantastic!
It was really nice of the Film Lincoln Center to have a corpse interviewing John Waters.
Yeah watched Female Trouble for the first time last night, definitely in the top 5 best movies I've ever seen
I watched that movie 2 weeks ago and it's stuck in my head!! I love Female Trouble.
I agree this Interview-er almost sabotaged the interview. As ever John Waters..saves it
John is such a cool, and interesting person.
Female Trouble is his funniest movie

They don't talk about Female Trouble that much! Wow....
John Waters .................my Idol.
The audio is horrendous.
Agreed, he doesn't even know how to hold the mic he keeps waving it around and it's too far from his mouth.
i mean, he isnt using the mic properly, but the interviewer seems fine to me? he doesnt seem awkward, he seems pretty relaxed. he's asking interesting questions, getting great stuff out of waters, and articulating himself clearly enough.

My dream was to meet John Waters I want to learn from Mr. Waters so I can get experiences
Why is the volume so low???
Can someone help me here? John mentions Margarita (someone), and a cookbook she put out in which she's snarky and says, "You'll never be able to make this!" What's her last name, please? I can't understand him. And where can I get that book?! Thanks!
Duras
thank you for this!
This Interveiwer is HOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRIIIIIBBBBLLLEEE!!!
If you can do better-- step up!
Does anyone know how to spell the last name of Margarita, the person John mentions at 19:00? I'm trying to search her up but I can't find anything...not sure about the spelling.
Marguerite Duras
Thanks!
i like the interviewer actually. he has some trouble articulating sure but he is opening new avenues of conversation by just treating the interview as a conversation. that, and having seen mondo trasho and multiple maniacs in 1970, thats pretty cool as well
who is the interviewer? I would like to meet him
Anybody know where to find anything about Margarita Durah? Spelling?

@@HeatherM0891 You expect too much out of these interviews, you must know it all already. You are sad.
Where is the audio?

omg what a raconteur John Waters is.
This guy seemed like he didn't want to be there.
Drugs
A long comedy that is good is "it's a mad mad mad mad world"
kool , thanx
The interviewer doesn't understand the principle of speaking into the mic.
Can't hear it.
I hate when interviewers talk over the guest. This might not have been a good interview with some of these dull “celebrities” but Waters is so charmingly animated. I mean we’re here to listen to John Waters not the interviewer. Lay off the poor guy he was fine. (I didn’t hear a word he said)
Yall so mean
Would've been better if they took questions from the audience. And if Lincoln Center got someone better to conduct the interview.
Just watched this trash classic again yesterday....Divine was totally bonkers playing both male & female roles, and so were many of the cast 😄 Dawn Davenport's star-making "performance art" kept me in stitches!

Sounds pretty sad reciting dialog.... sad indeed. Nothing better to do with their lives??
Josie cotton who sang johnny r u queer wanted to cover the theme song female trouble but waters turned her down, big mistake john she is also a huge cult figure and I would have loved to hear her take on the song
This interview has nothing to do with the making of Female Trouble
He is supposed to have anything to do with the making of the film. SMDH 🙄
the interviewer doesnt know how to use a microphone. max volume and i cant hear a word hes mumbling.
Queens, NY like Baltimore? I don't think so!
Sorry but that guy interviewing John is just distracting! He looks like he never takes a shower, it's DISTRACTING. Talking about Max Sennett and such.....come on, get someone who KNOWS what he's talking about to interview John Waters and talk about FEMALE TROUBLE.

And you know all about squirrels chasing acorns inside your head. Takes one to know one.
John Waters interviewed by Larry "Bud" Melman: Waters is brilliant as usual, but interviewer is terrible!
John Waters marry me.....................please
Alex Oyarzabal
He’s mine..
Stay away
um, ew. No. He is already taken anyway.
John Waters interviews himself
What? Huh? Can't hear it...Never mind....
there is no point having this interviewer on stage. love hearing Waters talk, but the interviewer is a distraction, nothing more.
Hush, children. Relax.
everyone be nice its past the interviewers nap time
WORST. INTERVIEWER. EVER.
Thank You Thank You for posting this 😀😀😀😀
