There is some layering on the track, but Will also has an ability to sound, sort of layered, which makes it seem even more layered than it is. It's kind of hard to pick out when he's doing it but it's the like gargling (almost) sound. He has incredible tongue placement and knows how to use the back of his tongue in his throat to make an echo.
If you roll your tongue to one side while doing the highs you can make the same sound. I think he pushes his against his teeth and creates a tunnel though.
I can vouch that their vocalist can hit all of those tones perfectly live. Probably one of the best live performances I’ve witnessed so far in my life.
Will Ramos posted video a few days ago of him doing a run through of the song in the studio, basically what he sounds like live, it is worth a listen, he is otherworldly! And those drums!
Lots of cool stuff going on with Will's vocals. There is some doubling in post, but I don't think he's using any sort of pitch shifting on the lows. Usually lows are produced by the false folds vibrating instead of the true ones, similar to clearing your throat. The false folds are responsible for subharmonics in kargyraa throat singing, oktavism, etc., so there are some similarities. The lower timbre comes from opening the vocal tract wide and placing the resonance further back (Alex Terrible has some thunderous lows because his vocal tract is humongous). The opposite is true for the highs, which place the resonance as forward as possible and have a narrower vocal tract. Will sounds like he's using "fry screams" for his highs, as well, which are when you close the vocal folds beyond the point where modal voice is produced but leave enough slack for you to push air through, creating the more distorted sound. There's a sweet spot where it's not enough to strain or cause pain, but it takes a lot of practice to find. I have years of classical training, but I've found that deathcore vocalists (this genre) are pretty much as agile and athletic with their voices as opera singers.
The highs may well (especially the ones that almost sound pitched) also come from a technique where vocalists find the break in their falsetto and push past it to get an almost pterodactyl sounding noise.
There's definitely layering to the production but every sound that is produced is from Will himself. No lowering of octaves or anything. But of course during production they add some layers to get some fuller moments. They have a live concert of this ep release and it's cool to see him do this stuff live. He's very impressive.
My reaction was very similar to yours With a few more listens though I was able to really wrap my head around everything that's happening and it is all wonderfully constructed however this is an intense amount of sound. And at a few times it seems to all wash together into a wall of sound that is nearly indecipherable. But I bet your reaction after a few more playthroughs would be a bit different. Also this band is a part of the subgenre of metal known as Death Core, most bands withing the genre have a central theme that revolves around death.
Well said, Lorna Shore usually deals in the sub sub genre (I guess that’s a thing) called “Blackened Deathcore” which is a hybrid of both Black Metal and Deathcore
Your eyes when he said Azrael the first time, I honestly think each time he says Azrael in this song it hits much different than the rest, it stands out the way he screams/sings it! Not sure why but every time I hear that Azrael I get pumped up and ready for a show and a pit ha!!!
I can confirmed that the recording is Triple Tracked (he has himself backed in other false chord ranges, high, mid, low), I've seen another video with the isolated vocal tracks. He absolutely has the full upper and lower range as I've seen his live performances.
I absolutely love watching the classically trained musicians reacting to this and specifically watching for them starting to headbang. No discredit to them, but its always fascinating to see them default to trying to predict the beats in a normal time signature, but missing entirely as the world of metal just puts everything they know on its head. It's awesome to see these musical geniuses finally start to see the solid artistic foundation metal is built on, but taken to the extreme which always keeps them on their toes.
Definitely vocal layering for certain parts however, they're both his vocal layers lol. . . You have to watch him live to see him single layer it and he absolutely nails it.
I really love your reactions because you are honest and genuine in giving them, I love that you appreciate all kinds of art and are interested in knowing more. greetings from Argentina :)
You should check out their EP release live performance, it’s almost an hour but they start off with this song. I’d love to see your reaction to that because Will sounds almost exactly the same live, it’s crazy
So with your question about an octaver on the mix, what a lot of band do is they do a lot of recordings and just put them on top of each other, so maybe he in the chorus is doing his lows and in the mix he is doing a little sing or harmonies and they just mix it... ALSO about changing from high to low, check out the Live video they have, they recorded a show in the House of Independents...
I really love how you do your videos. You seem so authentic in the sense you don't over do your reactions. Very professional and you sir have a big new fan!!
Will puts out his own vocal covers of songs on his TH-cam . The audio mix there is much more dry and really shows the true sound and texture of his vocals .. That being said he dose this song live and sounds insanely consistent .
In relation to using effects on his vocals, those are actually entirely his own sounds minus a few effects anyone would commonly find in a studio such as delays and reverbs. This song was done in one take and that is all Will's voice. Will is an absolute beast and again you hear that double harmonic technique that you hear in Slaughter. He's using many of those sounds especially that double snarl at the end to position his throat to hit that final low. Definitely listen to one of the top quality live videos of this song and you can hear that there is no effect production on his voice in the way you were suggesting.
It was NOT done in one take. Everyone keeps saying this after watching that recent interview Will did. He did the snarling part at the end in one take. He clearly says this. Go back and listen to the interview again.
