While listening to this , I can smell and taste the air of California in the 70's. Cross country road trip, windows wide open. So clean and fresh. The ocean air blowing through the trees. From the Redwoods in the North to Ventura Hiway in the South.

I had just gotten home from a deployment. It was summer so it was nice and warm. My three friends and I were cruising around in a Jeep with the top off. I was in the back seat, sipping on a beer, and we were blasting this song. At the time, I didn't know that that was as good as it would get.

In 1972...is was 14 living with my family in northern New Mexico...a town called Arroyo Seco(dry river)...As a kid I had my little transistor radio close to my ears . here in this town we had KVSF from Santa Fe.. They played everything TOP 40...This song reminds me of walking around the high desert landscape of Santa Fe, Arroyo Seco, Pojoaque, Espanola...I love the memories that conjour up inside throughout my brain when songs of 1970 through 1973 play golden tributes to my ears...Originals are always better

I wuz th3r3 . However, was it just a dr3am ? Or wuz i still traveling time as an electrical current ? In 1989 i had to surrender and crash-land my spaceship in the midwestern desert sand , to glass encapsulate the hardware to protect the remaining data , while skipping like a rock to the shore of Californ-I-A , where i wuz greeted by a confused and lively bunch . Forever grateful . The blak (black) box remains in-tact . Love is the ONLY way . Let not hate destroy the mind . It is merely just a distraction . - Peace be to all who seek it . - J ROD

I tripped on the real stuff and traveled the south barefoot. We hitchhiked everywhere and saw the stones in ‘72 in DC. Metal head all the way but America is just on another planet. The planet of haunting beauty.❤️

Yes, me too- know knowing what we know- will we give this to our children & their's? Of course we will. Talk to them- share- play the song. For all of it's purely musical value. Depending on the age of your listeners, explain that when a person is riding his beautiful 'beast' that he may love more than 'anything' he has known or 'has' he does not want to get chummy with his companion because he realizes that to get through the desert alive that at a minimum he will have to harvest his beloved beast in order to cross the desert to 'safety' or whatever is next. What a strangely beautiful song with rabbits holes abound. But agree with you. So let's share that with those close to us - we are riding the horse & know all this crap- so let not us or our horse die in vain, let's consider the next horseman.

I came here to say the same thing! I have a vivid memory of hearing this while wandering in a mall anchor store with my parents while the same age and thinking, wow, there's something about this song. It was a sense of wonder that couldn't be explained. If you find a piece of art -- music, theater, fiction, water, oil, stone, things I've missed -- that leaves you with a sense of wonder, you've been blessed. I'm so glad I still find and enjoy beauty, whatever form it takes.

I was only 3 years old when this came out, but my sisters and brother were all 6-8 years older than me (oops :). Anyway, I remember our old black/tan/fake wood panel side station wagon wheeling us kids down to the local swim club in the dead heat of summer with all the windows down (no A/C) and jamming to this tune all the way on the radio, everyone would be singing at the top of their lungs. Those were the days, let me tell you. I cherish them, the entire decades of the 70s and 80s. Things were looser, people were fun and not afraid to say the wrong thing or act silly for a laugh. I should have stayed in those decades … I would have been happier for the rest of my life. 😊

Saw America in concert Sunday, Jul 17, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO (warm up band was Poco). I grew up only a 10 to 15 minute drive north of Red Rocks and went to more concerts there than I can count, so suppose I was a little spoiled. On this occasion I had just graduated from High School and was working hard to save enough money to go to college in the fall. America was performing on two nights, Sunday and Monday the 17th and 18th, and a group of good friends at work were planning on going Sunday. I don't know about now, because I haven't been in years due to living in a different state, but back then going to a Red Rocks concert was an all day affair. Most everyone would arrive mid to late morning and bring coolers full of food and drink, blankets, footballs, frisbees and stake out there area in the stadium and just play and have good fun. Then, as the sun was dipping behind the mountain to the west, behind the audience's back, the warm up band would come out. Just as the warm up band as wrapping up and the sun was setting, the first lights of Denver would start twinkling in the east, and the band we all had really come to see would come out on stage. Knowing how much I liked America, my friends at work wanted me to get a date and come too. Because this would be an all day affair and knowing I had church commitments in the morning and early afternoon, I didn't think I could go. Any girl I would have asked to go with me would have also had the same church commitments. Plus, like I said earlier, I was trying to save money for college and so I decided not to go. About 2:00 or 3:00 o'clock that afternoon our doorbell rang. There at the front door was one of my friends who was already supposed to be with his date, who was also one of our coworkers, at the stadium. The girl had stood him up and here he was telling me to hurry and get ready because I was coming with him. He already had the ticket and a cooler full of food and he didn't want them to go to waste. You've got to remember everyone had general seating back then and there were no such thing as cell phones which we could call our friends and find out where they were. So, it was something of a miracle but somehow we managed to find our group in that stadium. And, though I was sorry for my friend, I have to admit I was just a little bit glad she stood him up or I never would have made it to this concert. And, what an amazing concert it was; wonderful friends, killer venue, and fantastic entertainment. Thank you America.

Yeah I think they've acknowledged that some of the lyrics are a little goofy. Legend has it Dewy Bunell was high as a kite when he wrote the song. I suspect the real story was simply that Dew was just an 18yo brit singing about something he didnt really have much experience of and ya know, its just goofy teenage lyrics. (And anyway, ask any australian or arab, you aint gonna be spending 9 days in the desert on a horse and live to tell the tale. Deserts *eat* people alive.)

Always wanted the followup to the initial hit -- do it again for me. And America's second LP 'Homecoming' came through. Like many other album acts them three albums in a row to start a career before tapering off was the norm. I don't think 'Homecoming' would have had the same impact if IT was first. We'll never know. But the debut certainly cleared away some musical elbow room for softer music to be played alongside the more avant-garde 'progressive rock''. The resulting Album Oriented Rock was huge for several important years.

Well, I have been around people I talk to a few hours and don't remember their names. Maybe America could not remember the horse's name while riding it. It doesn't mean the horse doesn't have a name. No one told the rider before they took off with it.

    • @bradfordgordon6552

One more thing, America remembered there were plants, birds, rocks, and things, but could not remember the damn horse's name after 2 days in the desert sun. This is bad.

For the longest time I thought this was by neil young as I had it on a mix tape (and it was the 1990s so the only neil young I had in my collection was Harvest).. Apparently I wasnt alone in that confusion. Its a complement, Young was iconic so to be conflated with him is no insult.
