I'm just starting to teach my son chess and this is just what I was looking for. I like the advice on letting him win and lose. Definitely with you on not shielding from disappointment. What I do notice is that when he's enjoying it, a lot of knowledge seems to seep in, not necessarily something I've shown but something he just gets. Will definitely keep going as I'd love us to play it many years ahead.
My son is four and has been flipping around in an old Bobby Fischer puzzle book. Now I’m teaching him chess on an old Kasparov computer chess board from the early 2000s. Pawns only. I’m looking to see how to progress him through the movements of the pieces. Excellent video. I needed these tips. Thanks.
Yes, and sometimes you have to give them the mechanics and let them discover the strategy on their own. Some people just prefer to play the game and learn the strategies that way
I think that a lot of the tips were useful but when I first learned to play chess at 6 years I didn't win a single game rotates but still liked the game

With the kids I teach, I often give the stronger one a handicap. It creates a fresh game for the stronger one and of course give the weaker one a better chance to win. Maybe allow the stronger player to play down a piece
They don't mind the imbalance from the outset? I picture my kids thinking "that's not fair", or feeling bad that they aren't good enough without an advantage.
One of my kids has a chess app on his tablet now and it's a great way for him to grow and to get lots of games in. He is really close to beating me consistently. 6 is such a great age to get started on chess.
I'm a bit young to have a son, but can you believe that my little cousin is 8 and his dad hasn't taught him chess yet? What an amateur. I will teach him, thanks for the video
