  • Chess seems like too complicated of a game for the three-year-old mind. But seven years ago Tyler and his best friend founded Chess at Three, a company dedicated to teaching chess to pre-school age children. In this talk, Tyler reveals the Chess at Three methods and explains how we can use it to teach children a new catalog of subjects that were previously thought to be too complicated for early childhood ages. Tyler is a Master Story Crafter.
Tyler is the Founder and Creative Director for Chess At Three.
Chess At Three tells stories that transform the chess pieces into a memorable cast of characters. These characters have quirky qualities that help children understand how the chess pieces move.
Every Chess At Three lesson has a fun story that introduces children to important themes that go far beyond chess. Chess At Three students learn about sportsmanship, grit, and math, all through stories. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I didn’t know what to expect. And at first, I was prepared to think that this dude is a horrible person who spills his anger. But he spilled it and was able to save it. And after watching how creative this teacher is with how he teaches chess, I love this guy now. How do you even get the idea to teach pieces’ moves? That’s really impressive. Props to this guy.

Yes one of the top new kids players from Russia was 3,but this sounds like a great course. Teaching one student or a whole class is completely different. A whole class would be very challenging.

Wonderful talk. I just started teaching my 3yr old yesterday and she picked up the concept of rook instantly. So I attempted to teach the bishop and she simply could not understand the diagonal just like you said. I will try with stories next time.

A most interesting concept to a teacher from the "old school" who sees great benefit and wishes you all were born 50 years sooner - would make you old but would make me a better teacher!!!! Thanks.

The elephant in the room is IQ. Smart kids can definitely learn chess before their 5th birthday. I have trained kindergarten teachers to teach to very young kids. Some totally get it, and others think they do, but really don't and there is little in between.

google laszlo polgar and read through his wikipedia pages. he's a big proponent of the idea that skills like chess to a large extent don't depend on IQ (nature) but on child-rearing (nurture)
