I don't really do any spraying near the garden as I don't have weed issues anyway...you are fine as long as you're not spraying close or using grass clippings inside the garden that have been sprayed

@brad munger Don't know if you have your answer, but the pre-emergent only works to prevent seeds from emerging (maybe the name makes more sense) - dandelion and other from seed weeds. You should spot spray for weeds here and there or, as I used to call it, blanket spray (like the hose end bottle) with a "post-emergent" spray if you have a field of dandelions. ****But if you have reseeded or over-seeded, make certain to read the label. Spraying new emerging grass seedlings with selective post emergent herbicide can stress your new seeds and wipe them out even though it's not labeled to do that.

  • @brianbier

It's the simple things. I keep dandelions for my small kids and the bees. Last year I was spraying some and told my daughter to stay back and I explained what I was doing. And she replied "but everyone loves dandelions!" So I don't spray them anymore. Bees were also all over them as I sprayed. I felt bad. So the flowers have found a home here.

Fun fact: Dandelions were first brought to North America to be used as a food crop. You can use them to make coffee, tea, and a host of foods, and dandelion greens taste very similar to other vegetable greens (So long as they're fresh) and the flower is quite healthy for you and also looks nice (to me at least). I completely realize this makes me weird, but I'd rather have a yard full of dandelion flowers than grass, because at least you can eat the dandelions.

Fun fact: a bird has a hardened snout also known as a beak. If they are growing in places I don't want them to, they are classified as a weed. For me it was The Weed Be Gone that worked in getting rid of all the weeds in my lawn like magic. Last year I watched a video by Ryan on how to get rid of clover weeds on a lawn without hurting the grass and he recommended Weed Be Gone. So I bought that one and sprayed my lawn and it worked. To this day I have no weeds in my lawn. Just grass.

I live in southern MN and sprayed weed b gon on 5/3/20, 2 oz/gallon. Then it got cold again, 30-50 F. A bunch are dying but a bunch survived. The creeping charlie doesn't seem too phased. I bought this house in fall 2018. Last year I paid a local landscaper to spray, aerate, and reseed but they suck. My neighbors are all rentals and my house was a rental, mowed by the landscaper I hired. This year I made a deal with my south neighbor to mow her lawn, set at 3.25 inches, and spray it to keep weeds from creeping back to mine. Anyone hit it again after 30 days like the bottle says and use a 4 oz dose the 2nd time? I bought some 20-0-2 liquid I'll spray when my newly seeded areas grow and get mowed a couple times. I'm in an uphill battle. Should I rotate herbicides or stick with 2 sprays/year of weed b gon? Thanx in advance.

For Pacific Northwesterners, I've used 3 of the products shown in this video, on a lawn that is primarily tall fescue with some ryegrass and kentucky blue blended in (multiple varieties of each). I've had best results with the Spectracide product (quickest and most effective weed killing with least damage to grass). The difference between the three was fairly minor, to be honest, but enough to notice. Just putting it out there in case you're making a decision about which to go with.

Hi Ryan, I'm binge-watching your videos to try to renovate my lawn. I bought my house over a year ago and the lawn was neglected before me and I've just been mowing and weeding by hand. I'm going to try overseeding soon as an experiment, but I'll be more prepared this fall. My question is: Can I use an ester-based product like Tenacity or the one you showed before or after I seed? (I'm in western PA, so I have similar conditions as you.) I have a lot of dandelions and "creeping Charlie," and a growing amount of crab grass. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

For spraying, if you want to be super specific about application, there are foam applicators that you can attach to your sprayer nozzle (slide on and fixes with a rubber band). You spray a little to saturate the foam, then wipe the product onto the weed. I've had pretty good results with this. It completely eliminates overspray or wind carrying your product onto plants you want to keep it away from.

Important: I would also strongly suggest that you pluck or remove any dandelion heads that you see before spraying as they will go to seed before dying and your problem will start all over again next year. This is the one thing that nobody talks about but it is critical if you want a dandelion free yard year after year.

I've used the Weed Beater product on your recommendation and it has worked quite well. I am curious Ryan what you do with any unused mixed product in your sprayer. It's a good problem to have ... not enough weeds ... but of course we want to be responsible about disposing of any left over. First time using it this spring I added some extra water to the sprayer after I was done, grabbed a couple of empty soda bottles, filled those until the sprayer was empty and dropped them off at our local hazardous waste disposal site. You appear to be quite deliberate and thorough so I was curious if you had different or better strategy in general for dealing with leftover spray.

I find myself purchasing grass seeds of various types which is a big NO and I wasn’t aware as a beginner the importance of stabilizing one type of grass. On March 16th, I removed the bulk of weeds from my lawn by hand and purchased again the Scotts Thick Lawn product. The next day I spread the seed mixture only to see no germination to date. I believe it’s due to the cool climate. I really wound like to learn the proper way to seed as well as prepare the lawn for various seasons.

My goodness you lawn looks like an oasis in the desert!! I went online and bought some of the Ryan Knorr soil loosener.. my lawn looks good now and my neighborhood has an informal lawn competition. My biggest problem is summer heat I water manually. I went on vacation last year for two weeks came back an was never able to get the lawn back. I want to win the competition this year. 😂😂

I’m trying to renovate my backyard, but is covered in all kinds of different weeds. I’ve tried pulling them out by hand but there’s just too many. I want to spray roundup, but I have dogs. How would you recommend going about spraying with dogs.

Hello Ryan, I have scarified my yard this spring to remove moss that was taking over my lawn and I also re-seeded. Things are looking much better and I mowed this last weekend the first time since I re-seeded. I am now seeing lots of weeds and I picked up the Ortho product in your video. I have never been much for using weed killer so I just not familiar. I have bought a backpack sprayer and am getting ready to treat my lawn. Do you leave a weed killer product in your sprayer after you have applied the product for your next use? I think generally that would not be good to do but dont really know. Also, do you use the same sprayer to apply fertilizer and weed killer? Thanks for your help! David

My large side yard is 1/5 dandelions. I sprayed with the type that attached to the hose. They wilted well. I plan on buying the Greenworks dethatcher. Should I just reseed then to help new grass grown where all the dandelions are. They had the long stems when when I mowed seemed to just lay over. they all didn't get cut well.

Hey Ryan, great content as always! Quick question; I have a 3 acre lot in Maryland with a lot of good grass, but there are weeds in it, and areas that may need oveeseeding. I have a mixture of K31, Tall fescue, and Fine fescue. I want to use LV400 weed killer with the sprayer to kill weeds, and then put down some milorginite.
How long do I have to wait after spraying the weeds to put down the Milo? Thanks!

I tried ordering both from the US, but unfortunately they cancelled my order (This item cannot be shipped due to IATA regulations). As far as I can tell these products are not available in Canada, and it looks like I can't ship them here either. Thanks!

Hi there, I need help. I wanted to get rid of a bunch of dandelions in my yard. I ended up spot spraying using a weed killer, but it killed the grass all around it. Now my yard looks patchy and ugly, and was wondering how I can remedy it. Since you're from Iowa, too, it might be easier for you to help me out knowing the climate right now. I live on the south side of des moines near 3 lakes.

Ryan, on my lawn renovation (reseeeded in fall) I over did it with tenacity when i did the 2nd spray (2 weeks after the first) i must have mixed a little too much and now i have patches of my tall fescue that are white. if the grass is just white and not brown, it should come back right? (maybe stunting it isnt too bad because i did an overseed at the same time). some of the grass has some light green at the base but some of the grass is mostly white.... sad too because my lawn was looking great!

    Hi Ryan. Another great video.
I don't have a dandy problem for the most part, but I'll use the info when needed. In my back yard, which gets limited sun once the leaves form on my maples, I suddenly have 2 large patches of what I think is bentgrass. It's very bright green currently while the rest of the yard is still greening up. I noticed it last year but it has doubled in size. (I'm in Madison, WI not too far from you). I've thought about just shaving it up; a new partial lawn could be my summer challenge.
What would you do? Kill it all with Round Up or scoop it and bring in some new soil? What blend of seed would you use? That area only gets a few hours of sun per day when the Maples are full with leaves.
    Thank you!

@@gregcale5388 That is the one thing you do not ever see with stars in these videos, testing their soils for herbicide carry-over. A simple bioassay is all that is needed. Setup a small grain or bean planting from their herbicide treated soil to a control soil that has never seen herbicide. They might be surprised. The dicamba (acid), a product used and suggested in this video, is moderately toxic to birds. Being spring and people bringing out their bird feeders, don't be spraying this stuff near the feeders.

I’m in the Deep South along the Gulf Coast. It’s very hot. I have bahiagrass, Dandelions are thick and running extremely out of control on my 2 + acres and I haven’t found anything as of yet that will kill the Dandelions and that will not kill my Gras as well.

I just did a pre-emergence application of Tenacity (with surfactant); is Tenacity a good/better option to remove dandelions? My whole yard has been taken over with Cloves and Dandelions and I have been pretty strict with yard maintenance and mow almost every 2 days (as of last year on). I splurged on Tenacity hoping it would be a one all fix all and plan to do a post spray in 2 weeks. Should i still get one of the weed killers you mentioned above? Thanks for the great videos.
