A little tip > don't throw out the water/vinegar mix after soaking the dandelions. Or, after soaking anything, for that matter. Use it to water your acid loving plants or, pour it into your compost. Remember, waste nothing!
Love dandelions! I make jelly, salve, vinegar, infused oil, tea, tincture and wine! People laugh at me all the time for picking them. I have them in my yard, but I also plant them in pots as well. I dry the leaves and keep them in mason jars and use them all year round in my morning smoothie! Thank you for the video, I feel lonely in the dandelion world. I try to tell people how healthy they are but they think I'm nuts. Thank you Doug and Stacy!
donnaflagg, yes! Pots are perfect, I grow a lot in pots, they are crammed in there, but dandelions don't mind. I harvest flowers and greens daily, and they grow back so fast. Food all spring and summer. Enjoy!
I don't know why I never thought to grow some in pots. Every spring I search my yard for them, but my soil here doesn't grow them. When we first moved in, it wouldn't hardly grow grass either. Nearly 25 years later, I've got many plants, but still no dandelions. (I've even harvested seeds from other places in hopes they'll take root. Hubby just shakes his head.)
My Grandmother dressed her dandelion salad with bacon fat and cider vinegar. She saved boiled potato from dinner the previous night, cut into chunks, into the salad. I don't remember if she put onion in the salad, but I do. It's forty-six years since she passed, but I could never forget her and think of her when I have her salad.
Gaby Rubio Diaz ...so a tea made from the ‘flowers’ helps for stopping diarrhea and the greens help get you cleaned back out and could cause diarrhea if one has issues...
Remember to leave them for the bees at the beginning of spring. These are the first flowers bees pollinate until they move on to other blooming flowers.
I agree. This spring, 2021, the dandelions in my back yard attracted many bees and other beneficial insects. I decided not to mow the yard because of the variety of flowering weeds that were growing. After all, they must have been hungry for nectar after the the long, cold winter in SW OK!
@@MrJoeyWheeler I just looked into it again and bees do collect pollen from dandelions. I should have been more clear and wrote "collect pollen" and not pollinate. Bees resort to these flowers if there is nothing else and considering the damage done to the Earth they need all they can get.
My grandmother from Eastern Europe would make a salad of dandelions, most of the parts, with sour cream, a little apple cider vinegar and sugar. It was so delicious!
Man, that sounds gooooood. Also the first reply sounds like a delicious recipe. I’m going mushroom foraging tomorrow, now I’m gonna be dandelion foraging as well 😂
In Greece, where I come from those greens are like a national food for thousands of years... we de-root them wash them and boil the whole thing, serve them warm with olive oil lemon and sea salt.. is the perfect side dish for grilled or fried fish!
In Greece, it used to be the depression meal during WWII. My uncle and his brothers boiled the leaves and ate them every day. Thanks to this plant, they survived for over a year. There was not a lot of food available with all the bombing.
perfect timing! We just purchased a new house and I mowed the lawn and 2 days later when I went back to the property, the lawn was covered in dandelions.... first thought was "oh no" but now it's like a gift!!
Until you eat them... Disgusting, I've tried them and never again no matter what benefits they bring, I'd rather eat termites at least they have a good nutty flavor.
I never knew the entire plant was edible. I made Dandelion tea with my Grandkids last time they were out and not only did we have a BLAST collecting the flowers, but it was a great way to share a bit of what I enjoy with them, and most important teach them that not everything they eat needs to come from a Market. They tried to pretend they liked it to keep Grammy happy, but in the end apologized and said they really didn't like it but didn't want me to feel bad!🤣🤣🤣 I on the other hand, discovered that I loved the recipe we threw together! This video has given me a new recipe to make with them. (If they are willing after their dislike of the tea🤣 y'all are great! Glad I found this channel!
Thats true God gave us all we need then man with all his greed shit and corruption started making food in a box, and tins, also chemicals genetically modified foods ect ect then Drugs too
I can't believe in the 70 years of my life I have never tried dandelion. I sure will now. The salad looks awesome. Thank you so much for the eye opening, inexpensive, easy and healthy way to use free outside plants
I remember as a child watching my grandmother brush the snow off the young dandelion leaves in early spring. After she dug them and cleaned them she would saute them with a little garlic. They were amazing.
@@annettebrasor3000 NOT THE ROADSIDE any more please. Not just emissions from the cars but roadside crews sometimes spray pesticides depending on where you are. I am probably going to collect some seeds and put them in a pot just to make them easier on these old bones to collect.
I remember about the same from my grandma we would go to the yard with her small wash tub collect the leaf or greens of the plant wash as well only grandma heated her saved bacon grease chopped onion spices pour over the greens that was her welted greens they were good
It's so good to hear of the goodness of all the wonderful plants that God has made when He has created the earth and that we van use to our advantage.😍
I soak dandelion tops in sunflower oil for a few weeks then strain. Husband rubs oil on joints for muscle soreness and joint cramp relief. Says it works really well!
I'm just starting to learn about this stuff. I know that we've used dandelion leaves to draw the infection out of bullet wounds and boils. Having suffered both, I can tell you that it works wonders. Thanks for the great content.
@@carolynlyles9681 You make chop the leaves and boil them in as little water as you can. After they turn darker green remove and strain (don't discard the water). Mash the leaves and place in the middle of a clean cloth that you don't otherwise care about. Because it'll be stained green. Gather up the sides and bind them so you have a sack with the greens in it. Bring that water back to being hot. Then remove it from the heat and set your cloth sack in it. When the temperature is bearable pull the sack out and wring it out so it just moist. It's ready to be placed on the needed area. Keep it moist and warm. The area will seem to get worse before it releases. The heat and the greens seem to work together to make it infection release and heal up faster. For the sake of all of the legal stuff, I make no claims about this on another person. It has worked for me. Use at your own risk. This does not constitute medical advice and I am not responsible for its use or misuse.
I made that salad and both my daughter and I looked at each other like I was trying to "poison" us. We both took a hesitant bite and then inhaled our salads!! Wow- thank you so very much.
It was excellent as long as you appreciate a little "bitter" , which is so good to help detox this time of year. I have learned to keep the dandelions I plan to eat cut down and eat the small young ones as they grow back - they are milder.
COVID-19 has me wishing I lived OFF GRID and grow my own food. It’s DEFINITELY a goal for me once this health crisis is over...I am planning to make it happen. 💐🌻😇💕 Thank you guys!
are u allowed to get dandellions from anywhere, not just your back garden, and will washing them with water and vinegar get rid of anything bad like pesticides and urine?
This is the first year I've used dandelions. I made two batches of dandelion jelly and also dehydrated a large bowl or dandelion greens and blended into a powder. I've been using a little of the dandelion greens powder in my smoothes for some added nutrition.
In addition to the fabulous nutritional supplements we can gain by foraging, the mental HIGH from being self-sufficient is INCREDIBLE! Knowing you can take care of yourself and your family during challenging times brings peace of mind, and true appreciation of all that surrounds us in our natural world! A real eye-opener! :D
My mother always picked wild greens in the soring time. She always had dandelion in the mix. So good with cornbread, onion and bacon! Thank you for sharing. We need to get back to real food!
We used to gather PIG WEEDS especially when quite young and after a rain. Remove the root JUST cook the tops and leaves. They must be young. U need lots for a pot full. U think u r eating Spinach!!!
Dandelions grow in abundance where I live in Portland OR. I hate the fact that I’ve always been told that dandelions were just weeds that need to be pulled and tossed. But I’m grateful that I’m discovering this information out now though. And how easy are these recipes! Thank you for the info!
i live Salem and i agree. Same with mushrooms, always told they were poison, WRONG. But i started educating myself in wild edibles. There are so many wild edibles here in the pacific northwest. I fell in love with my state again. Funny note, i was also told Oregon grape was poison... WRONG. I started to think of all the false information we were fed as kids. Mainly from grownups who had no idea how to answer the question so they tell us whatever , alot of false info( know it all ) LOL. But we can change by teaching the old ways to the young. I love to educate on wild edibles. The look on peoples faces when you say , yes you can eat that and it's Delicious! Blows people away.
@@DebbieCWellness Ignorance aka lack of knowledge. Most people see it as a useless weed and spend a lot of time and money to eradicate dandelions from their lawns and golf courses. It freaks my neighbors out that I intentionally collect and spread seeds for it.
Great recipies. My grandmother used dandelions and she also made dandelion wine. She lived through the depression. Learned to utilize what God gave us for food and wine. PS. Love the pie plate😊
This was dear to my heart. My beloved Kimberly, who is now with Yehovah, LOVED Dandelions, and would make sure every season we would pick those prior to the first cutting. Precius Memories! We share that now with our family, and new chapters. Shalom!
Thank you for the dandelion vinegar recipe, that’s a new one for me. Dandelion has been used for centuries in Europe as a natural healing remedy for digestion and metabolism. The tender stalks eaten raw are good for liver. They taste little bitter in the beginning, but then the sweet taste comes over. I got used to eat them always when hungry working in the garden. Another nice recipe is a “false” dandelion honey: cover the flowers with cold water, let sit overnight, strain, add plenty of sugar and cook into syrupy consistency, thickness up to your pleasure. Thicker is good on bread and butter, thinner as a drink sweetener. I bet it could be great with honey instead of sugar too. The resulting syrup/honey can be canned and sterilized or kept in fridge for shorter time. Oh and I forgot the “false” capers recipe. Very young flower buds not open yet can be stored in vinegar and used instead of capers in cooking recipes.
Sadly due to a broken hip this past April that the surgeon really messed up and a broken femmer at the knee a month ago on same leg I don't know if I can pick the wild dandelions any more, but I have 2 raised beds (4' x 10') that I can plant them in this next season😃. Not able to walk without the walker yet but my herbs are helping me heal and Lord Willing I will be good to go again by Spring 2022! 😄 Blessings Brook👩🌾🍏🍎
I've noticed the abundance of dandelions in my yard! I no longer need to buy the dandelion tea from the grocery store. Thank you for the good ideas. Be Blessed!
I've been into Wild Lettuce for pain relief since last year. EDIT; Mike REED (not green)has great videos on its use, and a recipe for a WL omelet. I found whole villages of it on the hwy right of ways, but this spring I noticed it all over our yard! But be Sure that it hasn't been Sprayed! If left alone, it can grow to six or seven feet tall. But when mowed, it grows closer to the ground and only has the one stalk. Wild Lettuce and Dandelions are cousins, and look like brother and sister. Wild Lettuce has leaves that appear serrated, where Dandelions leaves have fairly straight edges. The blooms of each are yellow, and are very hard to tell apart. WL, or Prickly Lettuce has hairs or soft bristles under the stems when it gets mature. KNOW what you are eating. The whole WL plant can be utilized, but the milky substance that appears when a stem is broken is Lacticarium, and this is a natural pain reliever that some say is more powerful than Morphine! I grind up the whole plant (not fine) and barely cover with water. Keep under 200 degrees, and simmer (I use an old crock pot that only gets 195) for a few hours covered. Then I drain off and mix while still warm with coconut oil, for a tincture. It aborbs quickly on the skin, and gives a few good hours of relief from back pain.
I so happen to walk my dog daily, and dandelion is blooming everywhere. I took interest taking pictures of every blooming trees, flowers, plants that I come across and often wonder what to do with the dandelion. Thank you for your video, and the wonderful ideas to prepare them, loved all the recipes you had shown here, I will give it a try.
I'm so happy I discovered you two! My back yard is full of dandelion plants. I'm looking forward to making the dandelion vinegar and the dandelion/feta salad. Thank you for sharing!
Stacy, WOW! 🌻 I have always heard that dandelions were awesome for you and I always wanted to try them and You made it so clear to me that I REALLY need to do it😉. You see, I have a kidney disease that is an auto immune, inflammatory, and filtering disease😔. Sounds like dandelion would be a no brainer🤔 to my everyday organic, home made products that I already use and eat🍳🥑🌱. It is due to this disease that my body is so frail 😷and drained 🛌and I have prayed for God to help me find help🙏. He answered my prayers with you👐. Thank you so much!!! 🤓🌻😊 I love you 💖💙💟 and God Bless you so much! -Karen
When ever I've made dandelion tea, I've always left them to brew for a day, then poor into a pot, bring the tea to a boil and leave on then boil for roughly 5 minutes, strain the flowers from the tea leave to cool then bottle it up. Its good for about a week in the fridge and have a big glass every morning before leaving for work.
I’m in the west coast of Ireland, just came across your site. Love what your doing as we also have a small homestead. Before Covid we had people come from March to October to help with some of the projects we wanted to do. I would love to send you on some of our recipes for chutney’s, ice creams and lots of the other yummy things I preserve. Do you get ‘Rose hips’-they are one of the super foods that are so high in vitamin C, I make this for friend’s chicken as it’s great to prevent the various bugs kiddies pick up. Another one I make is elder flower syrup and wine. I adore the beautiful pottery dishes you use. I will be on the lookout for more of your videos. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
How timely was this video! I love the ingredients for the tea and am going to make sun tea with my herbs. Dandelions and Sassafras are wonderful tonics in the spring after a winter of not many greens in our diet. God made these herbs and plants for our benefit and I thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us. It is truly wisdom that would be lost without sweet people like you Stacy to share this wisdom with us. Thank you and God bless you sweetie
Thanks for your recipe Stacy. The first time I was taught to picking up dandelions and turning it into a tea, was through a friend in 1996, who saw I was feeling sick, and after drinking it, I recovered quickly within days. To this day, I eat dandelion salads and also add it to my soups. 😇
There are many great recipes for dandelion wine in old books at the library and online. I am not a drinker of alcohol but enjoyed making dandelion wine and giving it away as gifts at least four times. You can make wine out of darn near anything organic. Dandelion wine and rice wine (sake) are wonderful. Wine and beer making was a common skill of home cooks in times past. Good for medicinal purposes.
Dandelion root roasted, ground and brewed like coffee is a good diuretic too. Chicory root as well. In parts of Louisiana, restaurants will serve coffee mixed with chicory root.
I can't believe this video came up on my recommended videos! I love dandelions and I have been eating the flowers raw the past week, as well as the leaves and roots, too, over the years. My husband thinks I'm crazy, even though I told him how healthy it is! Thanks for the recipes. I love how you are so friendly and cheerful! The video was so enjoyable to watch. I am subscribing and will be back to see more. Have a great day! 😊💕
My husband just asked yesterday what we were going to do with all the dandelions in the yard... I said there were lots of recipes... he thought I was joking!
Loved this video! I moved to an elderly complex where we're allowed to plant gardens. The whole property has medicinal plants for me to forage and no, they don't use pesticides or fertilizers. We have lots of dandelions, Usnea, Wild Lettuce, Wild Spinach and a huge Forsythia bush right outside my first floor window (yes, I'm 64 but I can still climb out my window lol) I was able to get lots of Forsythia flowers, roots and bark to make my own Chinese herbal medicine. I'd love a recipe to make a dandelion tincture too. I love to suck on and chew the stem. I guess that comes from making curly cues on the stalk as a kid. I'm sure there's more plants on this property that are medicinal and I need to figure out which ones are. We have a little park with benches with an island in the middle full of trees, flowering bushes, with lots of wild plants growing.
How in this world can anyone give a thumbs down? Come on man you better circle back on this and give thumbs up! These guys are awesome. give thumbs up these
I was taught to soak our wild as well as garden greens in salt water to drive the bugs out & rinse & rinse. I do love vinegar, so will give it a try. Grew up & back at the 1919 family ranch.
Watched this video last night and couldn’t wait to put our dandelions to use! I went out and foraged about half of them from the yard today (leaving plenty for the bees), and I’m now making a tea. I didn’t have any mint leaves yet, so I just threw in a mint teabag. I would never have thought to use the remaining liquid on my acid loving plants, so thank you R. Ernie! Can’t wait to taste this tea when I’m done in the garden today. 😊
I recently found your videos and I LOVE them! We bought 10 acres in October and we’re slowly developing it. Our youngest daughter graduates HS this year and our retirement plan is to move to the “Shire” and live a semi homestead life. You 2 are teaching me soooo much! God bless you for sharing!
In a time like this we are all being challenged to take this opportunity and use it wisely. Putting far more thought into the natural ways and God-given abilities to shine our lights and better help ourselves so we're able to share and help others. Abusing earthly conveniences can easily bring about much complacency in our lives. Anything requiring sweat , muscle and a bit of elbow grease we sometimes quickly say pass and on to the next quick and easy thing in line. Thank you for taking the time to use your platform to educate and empower us. We need more in making good use of our time in this hour. Stay safe.
Thanks for the recipe tips. There are so many other great tips in the comments. When we lived in the U.S. I sometimes made sautéed dandelion greens. But the family favorite was the flower buds picked in the morning before they opened, rolled in cornmeal, salt and pepper, and fried until crispy on the outside.
WOW...I very much enjoyed this message. I have been watching your videos for almost a year now and share them quite often. I'm 75 years old and can't do all of the homestead things I would like to do but you have inspired me to do more than I thought I could do. Keep doing these valuable messages as it helps even us old folks! THANK YOU!
Thanks!! 💕 I grew up eating these and after I turned into an "adult", I stopped. I am so ridiculous. My dad drilled it into my head how awesome these are, and milkweed pods and elderberries and blackberries....etc. He loved to live off the land. I dismissed everything he said and I am so ashamed. Thank you so much for this tutorial because I'm really trying to get back into homesteading like he did. Just the smell of dandelions brings back so many great memories of childhood. If I'm not mistaken I believe dandelions are great for eye health?
pearlgirl my sister claims to have the recipe buried in a book somewhere. I’ll ask her again. Once I asked and she said “it’s the same as making other jelly but you use dandelions!!” 🤷🏼♂️
Good stuff folks, really useful! Appreciate your humane efforts to encourage the people to make use of freely available herbs ,for their physical and mental wellbeing! You are a great couple! Thanks!
I just made dandelion honey for the first time last weekend. I've been putting it in my dandelion tea every day. Fantastic! I'm thinking of making some dandelion wine next.
The Greeks have been eating the leaves of same family plant as a wilted cold salad forever. They're best harvested after a heavy rain, more of it to eat & they are soooo delicious with seafood. 🐟🌿🍋
This video was super duper helpful!! My Fiancé and are just starting our homestead adventure and the all natural, pre-provided blessings like dandelion are plentiful. Thanks for showing us how to use them!! Looking forward to the Dandelion Root video 😁
Most of our dandelions have gone to seed already, so I have been harvesting the roots. I dry them and use them in the winter in soup. Your tea recipe looks terrific. We get wild garlic chives this time of year - they are awesome!
Dandelion roots make a decent tasting coffee. Best to dig them up in the autumn after the growing season is over: they are storing lots of nutrition and flavor. Clean the roots well...slice them into pieces... roast them a bit in the oven until "toasted"... grind them similarly as you would coffee beans. ☕ Yummy and nutritious. Hardest part for me is digging them up without breaking them off. Some knives (like a narrow field dressing knife: one side sharp and the other serated) work well... but they seem to vanish once l get my hands on a good one!!!
We have been eating the blossoms for years. We use an egg batter, roll them in the flour of your choice & fry them. They taste a bit like Moral mushrooms. Very tasty & very good for you.
Stacey I wanted to update you on my dandelion growing. I went out into the yard found a dandelion seed head and put it into a flower pot and just like that it worked. They are sprouting! In a little while I will have dandelion salad or maybe a tea. Thank you again for this video.
That tea part would make an awesome Sun Tea! Sun Tea has always been my favorite. Don't know why, it just hits different knowing how it's made. It was always a little bit magic to me!
I'm a diabetic, heart disease, copd, and over weight, I am going to collect my dandelions tomorrow and leafs..thank you for showing me what to do with them .this is my first video to you. Hugs and God bless..#id love to win.
Alice D Did ya get outside with the earth and get them? 😀 I’m not in great shape myself and am gonna go collect some as well and try for first time. Best wishes!
Great tasty and tangy salad with dandy lion leaves. In a bowl of water soak the leaves with some salt for twenty minutes or so. Drain well. In a small bowl mix olive oil, salt to taste, one crushed garlic clove, one or two mashed anchovies, Blend mixture into salad and serve. Very tasty. If you want to get rid of the garlic smell, chew fresh parsley. 👍
Been watching you all since the first of the year. The raised beds you built hooked me. I set up 2 following your tips and advice. By all the complements we are getting over just the beds I can’t see how we don’t succeed in having a wonderful vegetable garden this year. Thanks Doug, and thank you Stacy for all.
I love your videos. I had a huge harvest this year. Made dandelion wine, a great dandelion salve and of course cant forget those greens. Sauteed rough chopped greens with garlic, red pepper flakes and parmesan cheese served with a balsamic reduction. Yummy! I grow organically and leave dandelions alone. Keep on uploading videos guys!!
This week I discovered them from a yard, sweeping with them, researched, foraged and have had salad two nights in a row along with ginger lemon tea, and have two other projects planned! Super excited. Thank you again and others(including comments- many are so good).
I just made our first dandelion root coffee. I can't believe ow yummy it is! My wife walked downstairs while it was roasting and asked who was cooking with chocolate.
Good bit of info. I give my dog milkthistle as he is on epileptic medication which will ultimately destroy his liver. I might add a few dandelion flowers to his supper while they are in season. My other dog actually enjoys nipping off the flower heads so I know it will cause no harm, thanks.
I never knew anything about dandelion other than that I always thought it was pretty! But I can’t believe I didn’t know all these medicinal properties! I’m excited to start implementing these into my lifestyle
Ugh my mouth is watering!!! My daughter and I love spending our spring mornings picking dandelion and wild violets. Thank you for sharing your delicious recipes!
I like to thank you both so much. I went through cancer and I look for a healthier way to eat. Stuff that will benefit my life. This is one for my books. Thank you I'm going to pass this to my daughters. Have a healthy life. Tina 🐾🐈💖
I saw a man batter the dandelion flowers up and fry them. He made a burdock and honey dip, and it looked awesome. He was a pretty skilled cook. Thanks for sharing your life, more beneficial than you might think.
My untended yard is growing wild with dandelions. I wish I could harvest some for myself but my desert tortoises always get to them first, it is their favorite food ! ! !
I collected dandelions to eat and soaked them in vinegar water because they do tend to have bugs on them. After that I laid them on the counter to dry and through the drying process they turned into those fuzz balls that you blow to make a wish 😂 I won’t make the mistake of drying them too long next time. Thanks for the ideas. I am making a collection of hand written doomsday apocalypse recipes. This will go into my collection.
Doug and Stacy, I am back again for these tips on dandelions. Middle summer but the dandelions are back and before the grass is cut, I hope to use some of my ACV and add dandelions. Also will dry some in brown paper bags and make plans for medicinal uses. So glad we have these videos. See you at the University Wednesday night.
Thank you so much for this! I have been learning more about using dandelions and you gave me other ideas. My Dad, who was WWII generation, always ate dandelion greens, but cooked and served with vinegar on top. That’s what they did during the Depression - eating dandelion greens was very common. The old ways are still tried and true. 😊. I’m anxious to try your salad. Thank you for sharing these recipes.
Curious how everything is cross-feeding right now. I love sesame-oil sauted spring dandelion greens with fresh grilled asparagus, and just walked in the door from a park-walk to pick my first spring dandelion harvest, and THIS comes on my feed in the kitchen! Stay safe and healthy, everyone!
@ I live in Seattle. Park staff here would be butchered alive by hand-crafted machete-wielding militant vegans doing Buddhist Mahakala war chants if caught using any chemicals other than patchouli essential oils in those parks. It's against city codes. And it's a woodland, not a naively manicured playfield. Even particulates airborne from dinosaur-burning gasoline engines would have been blocked by the trees. At 71, I've been a nearly lifelong primarily organic-vegetarian who actually has a first edition of Rachel Carlson's silent spring his grandmother gave him in high school. About the only contaminant on those dandelions would be if overweight republican joggers in cheap Nike-knockoffs peed on them! You're preaching to a separation-of-church-and-state-antitoxin-choir. But, thanks for the warning!
My grandma always picked dandelion in a salad! The greens. I never liked it as a youngin lol Can’t wait to try the iced tea! Love your channel ! Ive learned so much! You can still homestead even if you are not in ideal circumstances!! Start with what you have and hone your skills!!!!
Oh 🥰🙏🏻 Thank you I’ve been working on my soils. When we bought this house the landscaping company the previous owner used had de pleated the soils and used ridiculous amounts of chemicals. A little tip > don't throw out the water/vinegar mix after soaking the dandelions. Or, after soaking anything, for that matter. Use it to water your acid loving plants or, pour it into your compost. Remember, waste nothing!
doesn't the vinegar kill plants? or do you mean as the liquid you the soil only?
If you have alkaline soil your plants will love the vinegar.. Or blueberry ies
I use used vinegar on weeds in my driveway. Works like a charm
I have some acid loving plants.. They're behind the shed tripping balls
I assume you can use it to neutralise potash.

My grandma used to use dandelion too. It’s part of our past too.

Yep , old folks in the south use to teach us to use certain plants too .
Remember to leave them for the bees at the beginning of spring. These are the first flowers bees pollinate until they move on to other blooming flowers.
Did you see her yard? Looks like is plenty for everyone!
I agree. This spring, 2021, the dandelions in my back yard attracted many bees and other beneficial insects. I decided not to mow the yard because of the variety of flowering weeds that were growing. After all, they must have been hungry for nectar after the the long, cold winter in SW OK!
Dandelions don't actually use bees to pollinate, they're asexual.
@@MrJoeyWheeler I just looked into it again and bees do collect pollen from dandelions. I should have been more clear and wrote "collect pollen" and not pollinate. Bees resort to these flowers if there is nothing else and considering the damage done to the Earth they need all they can get.
Thanks for this. Reminds me of the lovely book The Bees by Laline Paull. When spring comes around I'll take your advice!
My grandmother from Eastern Europe would make a salad of dandelions, most of the parts, with sour cream, a little apple cider vinegar and sugar. It was so delicious!
That’s wonderful. My Italian grandmother taught me how to pick, clean and cook them in olive oil and fresh garlic. SO delicious !
Great, me and my Mexican mom will try this
Man, that sounds gooooood. Also the first reply sounds like a delicious recipe. I’m going mushroom foraging tomorrow, now I’m gonna be dandelion foraging as well 😂
Dandelion wine is good.
In Greece, where I come from those greens are like a national food for thousands of years...

I have dandelion in my backyard, I am going to pick them and try you recipe, thanks
In Greece, it used to be the depression meal during WWII. My uncle and his brothers boiled the leaves and ate them every day. Thanks to this plant, they survived for over a year. There was not a lot of food available with all the bombing.

Where is your home lol I'll get em

Until you eat them... Disgusting, I've tried them and never again no matter what benefits they bring, I'd rather eat termites at least they have a good nutty flavor.
Did you make anything from them yet?

I'm just starting to learn about this stuff. I know that we've used dandelion leaves to draw the infection out of bullet wounds and boils. Having suffered both, I can tell you that it works wonders. Thanks for the great content.
How do you do that?
Yeah how do you do it
@@carolynlyles9681 You make chop the leaves and boil them in as little water as you can.

It was excellent as long as you appreciate a little "bitter" , which is so good to help detox this time of year. I have learned to keep the dandelions I plan to eat cut down and eat the small young ones as they grow back - they are milder.

She always had dandelion in the mix. So good with cornbread, onion and bacon!
Thank you for sharing. We need to get back to real food!
Glad you shared your words yes we do
We used to gather PIG WEEDS especially when quite young and after a rain. Remove the root JUST cook the tops and leaves. They must be young. U need lots for a pot full. U think u r eating Spinach!!!
Yes! Real food would solve so many problems.
I grew up eating dandelion greens. My mom made salad often using a homemade sweet/sour vinegar and added boiled eggs. Loved it . . .
As an herbalist, I love the simple dandelion, which is scorned by so many, for all of its wonderful uses.
What would it be scorned by anyone? There’s not many plants more wholesome where all the parts have medicinal properties 🌼🌼🌼
@@DebbieCWellness Ignorance aka lack of knowledge. Most people see it as a useless weed and spend a lot of time and money to eradicate dandelions from their lawns and golf courses. It freaks my neighbors out that I intentionally collect and spread seeds for it.

That's so awesome
Since I became a vegetarian my health has improved enormously. Thank you. I need the dandelion for fluid retention on my ankles.

Get the forage guide, everything is edible and medical
Are you mixing in the coconut oil to what you pour off, or the remaining plant you cooked?

I really like dandelion coffee and try to gather enough each fall to last all winter.

Most of our dandelions have gone to seed already, so I have been harvesting the roots. I dry them and use them in the winter in soup. Your tea recipe looks terrific. We get wild garlic chives this time of year - they are awesome!
The other one fritters are good too
Highly suggest making the tea from the roots. It kicks ass

I’d love to see other recipes in that collection!! ❤
That just means they were past flowering stage. Just pinch off the seed heads next time. The flowers are the least medicinal part anyway;)
@@shorelined1Tell me more! I was going to collect the flowers to make jelly or something. Thanks!
Oh no! I just stuck mine in the dehydrator.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂loved that hilarious 😅
I never knew dandelions were so healthy. Can't wait to try them now! 😊
The pottery is very nice. A friend of my father's used to make dandelion wine.
Was the wine good ask for a friend.😂
Hey, I might try that! Thanks for the idea!
Did you say ..wine! 😄
@@tamekahill2826 Dandelion wine is delicious
@@jacintaperdue1720 ok I try some .
Love this . I never realized dandelion flowers were edible.
Jack Strubbe This is the funniest rant ever!!! 🤣

@Germania Kuoni and what the bloody hell does THAT have to do with the price of apples?
My grandma always picked dandelion in a salad! The greens. I never liked it as a youngin lol
Can’t wait to try the iced tea! Love your channel ! Ive learned so much! I don’t have much land and live in a mobile home community, BUT I have great gardens! I homestead with what I have and where I can!! Until I can move to another place. You can still homestead even if you are not in ideal circumstances!! Start with what you have and hone your skills!!!!
Oh 🥰🙏🏻 Thank you
I’ve been working on my soils. When we bought this house the landscaping company the previous owner used had de pleated the soils and used ridiculous amounts of chemicals. I’m on year 4 and I’m finally seen robins and blue jays pulling worms everywhere 🙏🏻 I will DEFINITELY harvest some dandys soon. Thank you again for sharing with us newbies 🌼
Always love it when you can pick free food, dandelions, autumn olives, fiddleheads, rosehips etc.
thanks for the vlog..
I just found you on you tube I've ate dandelion greens my whole life and lots of other wild greens and I didn't even know how good they were for you I knew they were good but not how good this is my first video and I learned a lot thanks alot
are u allowed to get dandellions from anywhere, not just your back garden, and will washing them with water and vinegar get rid of anything bad like pesticides and urine?
Glad I watched the video till the end, I'm 73 and watching your videos I look in the background and I really have to say it looks like my home 🧐😇😇& I couldn't have a better dream, looks like God's pretty happy and thank you.
