Kapunda was originally the site of the first copper mine in the colony of South Australia. Copper bought wealth into the town and it's any easy hour drive from Adelaide to explore and learn some local history.

We enjoyed the tour of Kapunda. Looks like a lovely town. We enjoyed seeing the mural of how the mine looked and seeing the mine itself now. We love metalwork and loved seeing the horse. It seems funny to us that in winter it's green. Different part of the world. Our winter is white! Thanks so much for bringing us along.

Yes, winter is lovely here in South Australia as everything is green. We're at the end of summer and the landscape is very dry, dusty and brown. In my next video I've gone to another much larger old mining town and I went in summer and it's dry and dusty!

Hi 👋 So good to see this video and especially that tall chimney and the old Baptist church turned museum and to hear about the mine jobs and what the Welsh jobs were. Thanks for this interesting historical tour . Have a good week :)

I've got one more copper mining area to visit and it's the largest well preserved one that has the smelters as well. And the chimney there is square as the Welsh built and ran the smelters. I know far too much about industrial chimneys! Travel does give you a collection of random facts!

It is an easy drive out to the countryside, and it's nice in winter as everything is green. (Much more dry and dusty in summer!)

Thanks for watching! I loved the Clyde sculpture, it was incredibly clever the way it was made with all the scrap material for the local area.

Kapunda looks a pleasant place and its mineral wealth has led to some lovely old properties decorating the streets. The spoiled landscape of the mines though is a bit of a blight. Interesting history. Big skies are attractive to experience but to be honest I prefer more variety on the whole. Interesting presentation.

There was quite a lot of wealth in the town with the mines and then Sidney Kidman was a major pastoralist. Sadly the house he donated to Kapunda High School burnt down last year. It is being restored, it's having to be pieced together from what can be salvaged. Kapunda was the first major mine site, it was the oldest and smallest, I've done a video on Burra, that mine was much larger. I've got one more, on the biggest of the copper mines which only closed in 1923 at Moonta Mines. It just takes me a while to make the videos!

3.24, it was a Convent. The school was on the street behind it

The catholic school that closed in 1968 was one that was run by the Dominican nuns who took over from the Sisters of St Joseph. The house now called Mount St Rose, was the original school built and run by the Sisters of St Joseph before 1892 (when the Dominicans arrived and built a new school) The Sisters of St Joseph had a school on the site (the current Mount St Rose site) and then it was a convent.

The Kidman house burnt down, but they are rebuilding it, I read recently they have salvaged what they could and now they're ready to rebuild.
