Castle Acre is a great rural base for exploring Norfolk. It's 15 miles from the large town of King's Lynn, close to the Sandringham Estate, the stately homes of Holkham Hall and also the very impressive Houghton Hall and Gardens. It's also not far from the beaches of Wells Next Sea and Holkham Beach.
What a great place... bustling high street along with the castle remains and priory ruin! I can't wait to see Norfolk. Meant to get there this summer, but didn't make it...
It was lovely, Monday 9am not exactly bustling, but the Sunday was lovely, people in the pubs and cafes (and the village green) on the High Street. The weather was fabulous as well, this was in June (this year! Some of my other videos are a year behind!) I just liked the rural nature of the village, there is one modern grocery store/post office but it's one street back from the High Street so the High Street retains its charm.
I can recommend Castle Acre, I have to admit I had never heard of it either! But I wanted to find somewhere close to Sandringham that I could use as a base to explore the northern part of Norfolk. I prefer small rural towns so it was a lucky find and the bonus was the priory site.
Lovely tour of Castle Acre. It looks so quaint. Also great that they're converting the old phone booths to places that store defibrillators. Is this happening all over the UK? A great idea and people would know how to find them fast if they are all over! There not all that costly considering their worth in a time of need. The stone priory is beautiful considering it's age. Love the architecture. Shame about the monks being evicted so a nobleman could enjoy it. Loved seeing the Castle ruins also. Thanks so much for the tour.
I don't know how many phone boxes have defibrillators, I just noticed a few around, especially in small towns, which is why I thought it was unusual that Castle Acre still had a working public phone box. I think it is a great initiative, and small towns and villages tend to have a lot of community initiatives, that's the nice thing I suppose about living in that environment. The Priory was the first one I'd ever visited, so was amazed at how large and it would have been quite a complex, with an infirmary (so a hospital) in it as well.
Fantastic isn't it? King's Lynn which is the major town about 15 minutes up the road has an even larger Bailey Gate as you enter the city, people there just take it for granted. I was more 'wow a castle gate!' as I drove through.
One of my favourites, Norfolk is just incredible as is Castle Acre, for me I loved the castle, but the priory is so ornate. Love the charming village, enjoyed listening to your information and fantastic narration! Such a pretty village worthy of a visit! Thanks for the video
The priory is the first one I've visited and was so impressed at what complex places they were. The Visitor's Centre guide was great and spent a long time explaining about the site and life in the priory and that made it seem even more alive.
Castle Acre is truly a gem in Norfolk! 🌳 It's impressive how much history and beauty are packed into this village. The charming village, the castle, and the stone priory are all so captivating. Norfolk seems to have it all. Thanks for taking us on a tour of this picturesque place! 🏰🌻😊
Amazing amazing video sharing dear friend ❤️😊 I really enjoyed watching Thanks for sharing this with us giving another a big Big like thumbs up 👍👍👍👍 See you again take care Keep intouch ❤️👍
What a great find, we love visiting Norfolk, but mainly visit the coast. This is such a stunning village, with so many beautiful buildings. Definitely somewhere we need to take a trip out to visit.
It was a random find, I wanted a base for a visit to Norfolk that was close to Sandringham as I wanted to visit. Kings Lynn was where I started looking but we had a hire car so then parking was an issue, staying in a large town that becomes problematic. We ended up at a lovely B&B just outside Castle Acre and that's how I discovered the village. Loved it and enjoyed the tranquility, although the High Street and the village green were very busy Sunday afternoon! It was just a lovely introduction to English village life.
We have never been to Norfolk looks lovely, oh paid parking everywhere that’s not good 😂 we like to still see the red phone boxes even if they are being used for something else! The priory is stunning! The detail on the beams are impressive. Castle remains are cool too and free to enter! Apologies for our tardiness we did not get notified! Have a lovely weekend ❤️
I loved the story about the red roses on the beams, the prior playing politics but it didn't work and they all still got kicked out! I ended up really liking Norfolk so I think there'll be a return visit at some stage, there's a lot to see. Thanks for watching!
The Priory is a wonderful survivor. The remnants of the church are lovely and the site is well worth exploring. At the other end of the village is the castle but not so much remains but it is still interesting to explore. Our world has much to offer.
The Priory was fascinating, it's the first priory complex I have seen, so was impressed by how complex it was. The castle was a bit disappointing, I expected something a little grander but it was free to wander around so that was a bonus.
