    Wow what an in depth video. You’re right here in America, Bigelow is typically our grocery store brand, but I’ve noticed some places are selling Twinings here now. You might find this funny, but I’ve been drinking Earl Grey for close to 30 years because that’s what Captain Picard drinks lol. Out of all the brands I’ve tried Bigelow probably has the strongest bergamot flavor and aroma. Great video!

      I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for saying so Captain! I can think of far worse characters to be influenced by than the inimitable Picard!… If you find yourself saying “engage” every time you ride in a taxi cab however, it may be getting a little out of hand! 🤣😆😂

    Here in East Africa, using Kenyan estate black tea and locally grown bergamot, I enjoy my well-brewed tea to be either from the brand My Tea, or by the local company Kericho Gold, which is based in the heart of Kenya's principal tea growing region, the highlands rising west of the Rift Valley.

      @@thetastetestchannel I'm pleased you were delighted by my comment, as your video was a delight for me to watch. It even inspired me to drink another a cup of tea (another for the day, tea is something I commonly drink in periods) and have it be Earl Grey for that cup.
      I started watching your coffee one too, which is something I know way less about compared to tea (although at least some), and am enjoying it so far, but I will have to go sleep soon so I will watch the rest later. I like that you do your research because that adds interesting things to your videos. I'll send this one to my Canadian friend too to watch sometime. Bigelow’s high price may be due to import costs. Here in the Midwest USA it’s about $0.15-$0.20 a bag. I definitely want to try the Fortnum & Mason, though!

    • @thetastetestchannel
      @thetastetestchannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with your prognosis Doctor 😁Import duties no doubt would have affected the cost here in the UK, but I think still not too much to pay if it’s someone’s favourite. Hope you get to try the Fortnums, it was superb. Thanks for sharing. 😀👍

    A few months ago, I converted a non-tea-drinker into a tea drinker with the power of Earl Grey. I used a loose leaf variety that I really enjoy. I'm not a fan of the Bigelow Earl Grey, so I gave my box to my now-tea-drinking friend. The ones left in my collection are by Stash (a brand common over here in the US) and Twinings. Of the two bagged Earl Greys that I have in my collection, I think I prefer Stash. You can DEFINITELY tell by the taste and aroma that it's Earl Grey, but it's not as sharp as Bigelow or Twinings. I drink my Earl Grey with a splash of lactose-free milk because my mother's DNA has not seen it fit to bless my small intestine with the ability to produce sufficient amounts of the lactase enzyme.

    An interesting first place. I am an Earl Grey drinker almost exclusively Sainsburys own brand. Some body did give me a present of boxes of F&M. Had I not know I would have thought F&M were putting Sainburys in their boxes. I did find it odd that my friend went to the effort of going to F&N and paid their price when all they needed to do was go to Sainsburys.

      Funnily enough I’ve had Sainsburys Earl Grey on several occasions and it’s perfectly nice, nothing wrong with it at all. Personally I can definitely notice the difference between that & Fortnums but like you say, why pay more if you like them both equally? Thanks for sharing and hope you enjoyed the video. 👍😊

    I greatly enjoyed your review and professional presentation. There are so many Earl Grey's in the world today and I assume you chose the most commonly available ones. I live in the Texas (US), so will visit the local British store to see if I can get my hands on Fortnum and Mason. Interestingly enough, I've never purchased Bigelow brand tea unless it was what a restaurant happened to serve. It is my understanding that tea brands vary in quality and taste from country to country. For instance, a British friend living here in the States says that she likes Twinings Earl Grey, but only the one from England. She does not like the American one. After her comment, I researched and learned that indeed, the American and British versions do vary. Same with Lipton. Another friend who has lived in various countries always had her husband bring home large packages of Lipton Earl Grey from his business trips to Dubai, stating it was better than the American version.
    I've enjoyed many Earl Grey's over the years but have recently begun drinking Earl Grey again after a lengthy break. Currently, I'm thoroughly enjoying Prince and Sons, but have loose leaf Tea Pigs Earl Grey which I need to open and try. So many to taste, but now I'm intent on finding Fortnum and Mason here in Texas. Thanks again!

      Thank you so much for your lovely comment and kind feedback, and clearly from a dedicated Earl Grey fan! Many global brands are consistent worldwide, but you are quite right, there are quite a few that seem to vary their ingredients from country to country, either based on local taste preferences, different ownership or the availability or laws around certain ingredients. So, sometimes it’s bit of a roulette wheel what you’re going to get if you’re travelling! Again you are quite right in deducing that we try to prioritise including many brands that are either available worldwide or that ship worldwide so, if you are struggling to find it, Fortnum & Mason do ship globally by the way. Meanwhile thanks again for sharing and a big Howdy to you in Texas from a very wintery and snowy England, and here’s wishing you a wonderful holiday season. 👍😁

      @@thetastetestchannel , Thank you. May you enjoy a lovely and blessed holiday season as well!
      FYI, as I perused teas at the local supermarket yesterday, I noted the Bigelow Earl Grey. Having just recently watched your excellent review and thinking that I have been negligent and narrow minded to have never tried Bigelow, I purchased a box. I've just now finished drinking a lovely cup of it and believe your review to be spot on. It is definitely flavorful and lively and I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed it. As you stated, it is not as subtle as some but very drinkable. They are generous with the bergamot which I appreciate. The individually foil wrapped sachets will be perfect for upcoming travel as well.
      Thanks again! I look forward to enjoying more of your reviews.

      I find it really satisfying to have a few different Earl Greys on the go at any one time to choose from for different occasions or for pairing with different accompaniments, and it seem to make each one feel a bit more special too!
      Wishing you a truly wonderful holiday season and Wow! 17F is cold, especially for Texas!!

    Earl Grey, you get both worlds. Great for hot and iced tea! Though I'd prefer when doing taste testing to not put milk into it. You'll not taste the very essence of each brands in my pov. Usually black teas are steeped/brewed for 4-5 mins surprised that this is under 3 mins.

    • @thetastetestchannel
      @thetastetestchannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As explained during the film, for a comprehensive test, all brands were tasted both with and without milk, which, as also explained, was added on film to allow viewers to distinguish the subtle colour differences between brands. As for brewing times, many of the most respected tea houses in the world recommend brewing for around 3 minutes. Over-brewing can cause bitterness and override the complexities of the tea, but everyone should of course brew to their own preferred taste and if you like to brew yours for 4-5 minutes, that’s a personal choice and there’s nothing wrong with that. 👍😊

    One important factor overlooked in this review -
    Earl Grey tea is flavored with Bergamot oil. HOWEVER - other than Bigelow (which was the most expensive) - all the other teas contained artificial flavorings that taste *like* bergamot, and not the real thing. Taste is a personal thing, but I'm not sure why you'd want artificial substances in your daily tea.

    • @thetastetestchannel
      @thetastetestchannel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing but “Bergamot Flavouring” does not necessarily mean “artificial” flavouring. Whilst Bigelow do indeed use pure Bergamot Oil, extracts and concentrations of Bergamot can be used to produce flavourings with different or more subtle notes. Regardless, we will always base our reviews on taste alone. 👍😊

      Lady Grey contains lemon and orange peel, in addition to black tea and bergamot, so tends to have additional citrus notes.
