  • The incomparable and complete legendary figures of musician songwriters David Paich and Steve Porcaro can only be told in "Wow". Sunset Sound was the tracking recording studio for Toto IV, Hydra and about a 1000 other sessions with these two guys playing massive roles. The idea of the Sunset Roundtable is to have a free discussion about memories at this legendary facility, as well as learning about the person's growth in life and their career throughout the time period making records here at the studio. David Paich speaks sincerely on his father Marty, as well as Steve with Drum legend father, Steve Porcaro. We all agree that Jeff Porcaro might be the greatest drummer ever and that there is an everlasting magic of this recording studio which is still alive today. Steve and David both share on working with Don Henley , Michael Jackson , Quincy Jones and the absolute praise for their brother guitarist Steve Lukather. Toto IV stories are the best ever & they set the record straight on drug use in the 1980's and this is one of the funnest, coolest roundtables around one of the most significant bands and people to grace this series.

Very cool! Studio date was days after my 18th bday, and only a few months before I joined my first "real" band. I was marveling at how David Leonard's OVERtime rate was $10/hr - significantly lower than today's U.S. min wage.

Musical royalty. Never again will we see an era like the 70s and early 80s. Unparalleled musicianship and commitment to craft. Humbling and inspiring.

      Totally agree.
We owe a debt of thanks to Steve Porcaro for his talent and willingness to brute force the early-day tech into musical submission. All those Paich piano keyboard riffs were always the sounds that hooked me in.
Amazing interview- I was floored by the knowledge of the (young!) interviewer- gonna do some homework on him, clearly he is someone I should know more about.

To clarify the "Dirty Laundry" section - those synth/organ parts were all Danny Kortchmar's, the co-writer of the song. I didn't mention Danny enough in my description of the session. He was totally guiding the proceedings, knew exactly what he wanted and was an absolute groove to work with. The genius behind the synth parts was Kootch - I'm describing how we pulled it off. I added some samples and sweetened it later but Danny was the man that night. I was always thrilled to get invited to the party.

Steve, I have commented below should you be interested. But, so many people overlook Kootch, however, I have to say, how much grace you have shown over the years. Your genius (not withstanding everyone else's in the band) is recognised by many. I've watched many snippets of you saying you had your fill with touring. I get that. Your body of work, talent and dedication are legendary. I listened to Jeff playing with David on the Paiste products release when I was like 14 yrs old (Im nearly 50 now). I listened to The Seventh One daily from being 14 til about 18 lol - playing along with Jeff. However, all of you inspired me - over the years I've been fortunate to message back and forth with Luke - some years ago now - but you guys have absolutely been the bedrock of my musical life. I realise many may message you - but I just wanted to thank you, sorry for the fanboy stuff, but you've really impacted my life for many positive reasons. So thank you Sir. I hold you in high esteem

You are such a top notch person Steve to add this comment. I’ve always loved TOTO from “Hold the Line” all the way through late 70s/80s era. I bet you have been a joy & a blast to collaborate with through the years. I commend you Steve Pocarao and the entire Porcaro family !! Your name is synonymous with Excellence in Music History!! Thank you. Most people think Toto ended after IV. The subsequent albums just got better and better. The melodies got stronger. Luke's solos became more inspirational. Every single time they brought their A Game. Right up to their finale Old Is New. In my life Toto are simply ubiquitous and so so needed.

    • @waltersimmons946

The first 4 albums are the GOLD standard of TOTOS history because the first album (TOTO)was an out of the box success Hydra and Turn Back not as successful but the TOTO rises like a Phoenix getting 9 Grammy nominations but taking home 6 Grammys for TOTO IV. Yes all the succeeding albums are great but the first four showed they were hungry. Can't beat that notion.

I RARELY watch YT videos without fast forwarding through various parts... This interview and the previous one with Steve Lukather were watched start to finish. The knowledge and even more so, the IMPACT these session musicians had on music cannot be overstated. Being 53 years old, I was so fortunate to grow up when musicians actually had to figure things out strictly by the level of their musicianship. I was listening to Spotify one day recently and a song (not Toto) I haven't heard in well over 35 years came on. When I looked at the credits... yup.. Luke and Jeff were on it. I challenge anyone that watched this interview to Google search each one of the Toto musicians. They have contributed to so many hit songs that you'd be floored. While Michael Jackson's Thriller album is no doubt one of the greatest of all time, you'll see Toto's DNA all over it. These guys are true legends!!

This was wonderful. I remember I wrote to the Toto fan club, which had the address on maybe the inner sleeve of the first album, I received I think a t-shirt, an 8x10 band photo, and a pencil lol - this was in 1979, I was 12. Luke signed the photo when Toto played The Roseland in NYC in 1992 touring behind KOD, he saw the photo and cracked “Oh man, whaddya have, my baby pictures?” How I love Toto.

@danielduplantier3741 no Detroit. Don't be a music snob. What I like is my business. Music from 1983 was real musicians playing real music. That song has special music bc it reminds me of my brother who died. He loved that song. FYI Afrixa was the last song added to Toto 4. Lukather thought it was the farthest thing from a hit. Had goofy lyrics. But 40 years later the song is still popular...loved by everyone except you apparently

That was an awesome interview & while I’ve watched Luke’s interview numerous times I know I will watch & listen to this one many more times. These guys are such awesome musicians who along with both Paul & Drew created a outstanding picture of the wonders of recording at Suncoast Sound Studios. The emotions when Drew asked them about the last time they spoke with Jeff you could feel the brotherly love from both David & of course Steve that was just oozing out of them. It was quite like the same emotions when Luke spoke about how much he loved Jeff & how much he still misses him each & every day!!! BTW my wife & I saw Luke just last week at The Fox Theater here in Atlanta with all the wonderful musicians in Ringo’s All Starr Band if you get a chance to see the show don’t miss it, it to was quite wonderful too!!!

    Absolutely amazing conversation.
I locked on to Toto and became a huge fan as a teenager in the early nineties (thank you father) and continue to play their albums all the time (solo stuff too). Along the way (and thanks to the arrival of the internet) I learned what a session player was all about and that all the Toto guys were heavy participants in the scene.
I've seen a couple of lists over the years that have attempted to put across just how many artists they've worked with... and those lists are always incomplete. I recall that Luke said in an interview years ago that be it singularly and collectively the members of Toto have played on over 5000 songs covering every genre of popular music except rap. - How magical is that?
I could listen to these guys talk about their amazing careers all day long. Well done for making this happen.

Toto, and Earth,Wind&Fire two of the Best bands ever. They have worked with each other.I would always see Steve P,and David P names in the credits of all the artist I have ever listened to,including gospel artist. Steve Pocaro programs a synth like he was born doing it. I try to emulate his sounds of choral pads and horn trumpet leads in all of my church gospel projects. Its great to see and hear two keyboard icons still alive and well. Thanks to both for their musical contributions, and lending to the music world some of their in born talent.

David Paich and Steve Porcaro may not be household names but they were the geniuses behind so much of Toto’s amazing sound. And their contributions to other major artists albums and Pop/Rock music in general is just phenomenal.
So it’s really great to hear them talk about the history of the band, their prolific careers, bandmates, families and funny stories.
I’m also really glad I finally got to see Steve and David and Joseph perform live in Grand Rapids, MI when they briefly reunited with Toto several years back. I even had Front Row seats! Definitely one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen.

They grew up in each other's houses..... PAPA Joe turned his garage into a rehearsal space called "Carroting Downs". It's where Rural Still Life rehearsed! These guys' Dads truly nurtured some God-Given talent, and we are all better for it. At present, U am still looking for my next set of Jeff Series Regal Tips. I may forever be SOL. I play to keep thyroid weight issues in check. He was a MAJOR influence on me as a pianist, even- because of his phrasing at the kit. These fellas are GIANTS.

Amazing. Love you guys more than I can possibly put into words. David, I’m so happy to see you happy and healthy on an interview. I can’t even explain it.
The Porcaro family are the greatest Italian American musical family from the Northeast (of all-time). 🇮🇹
Thank you Sunset Sound and everyone involved for making this interview possible. I really can’t (even again) put into words just how happy this makes me . You made this dude’s week ❤
My thoughts are always with Jeff, Joe, Mike and… I want to send some healing vibes to Bobby Kimball, one of the greatest singers of all time. Don’t worry Luke, I did not forget you. I see you everywhere on here and I share it with everybody. (Same with JW). Love you man ❤
Omg that ending made me so emotional 😭

From the first time I heard them I was hooked. I don’t think I ever actually saw them until Rosanna hit MTV. By then they were already larger than life to me. And that is what makes Toto so incredible. Hearing their greatness in the music, sight unseen, is the highest bar you can set. Superb interview. Thanks guys!
