Maybe put the canopy down when you go to bed so the heat is forced to be down in a smaller area (you don't need that head space when you are sleeping). Plus canvas won't hold the heat as well as the van walls.
Paint it shiny black. Maybe put the AFH LOGO in white or if you want to be incognito call it "Voyager"

I 100% agree. When in the teen you will want that top down. Canvas isn't very insulated.
hahaha, Obviously we know whose dumb here. YES, put the canvas down at night making the space to be heated smaller and the heater will keep up just fine in teens cold weather. Ask me how I know??? Cuz I'm not dumb and I make the ceiling height lower to keep my sleeping space warmer.

Earl REALLY looks like he wants to go home and get in his regular bed. 😂. 18 outside and 53 inside is pretty good in a camper. 24 inside sounds like my camping as a kid. Lol

If you have a RV service center around you they have a “arctic wrap” that you can put under the vehicle and would help keep it warmer. It has an insulation in it.
Might stay warmer with canvas for height was lowered

I bet you Ron is looking down say “man, I want that!!” With the traveling he was enjoying doing on his fishing adventures he would have LOVED this! He is smiling down on this find!! ❤❤ Hell, he probably brought it to you for all that you did for his family when needed. @cameramanron he would be down to visit in a heart beat to camp in it by your creek and pond instead of his tent. Love the van and I think lots of adventures will come from it.
This is so awesome Daniel. That baby looks like an armored tank. Love the black shovel and whatevert else that is on the side of the van. Pretty sure DJ and Emma Lee will opt to stay home and let you and Houston take it on an adventure. You will make more great memories with it. Have fun. Oh I see Kelce got to come along too. Even though Houston is not interested in drinking coffee, as most kids, he will always have returning memories of this camper, each time he smells brewing coffee.

What fun! Years ago after my husband left the kids and I lived in a big 100yr. old drafty farm house. The only heat we had was a wood stove in the living room so in the winter we would close the living room doors and turn the couch into a bed. 2 heads at one end and 2 heads at the other. No matter which way I turned I had somebody's feet in my face. I always felt like a momma cat all cuddled up with her kittens. Listening to the wood stove crackling away and we were all safe and warm and together. We'd talk and I would have to tell a story and we'd all be asleep before the story was finished. Looking back those were some of the best times. I know you and Houston will make lots of good memories in that van. And by the looks of things you'll have some opportunities to show him how to work on cars too! Another fun dad/kid time. Good buy.

Congratulations on an awesome van! Exactly what I've been looking for...or to build out lol. Seasoned cast iron dutch oven would've baked those cookies perfectly. Now you and Houston can go on awesome trips and create those father/son memories. May i suggest NW Montana? Awesome fishing, camping and hunting abounds here! Especially if you like rainbow trout, brookies and cutthroat. We also have bass, perch and walleyes. Deer, elk, bear, grouse, moose, mtn. lions, and wolf hunting. I think you 2 would love it around here!
A scorched sugar cookie made in a frying pan ---- is camping! That's what it's all about. I'm a bit jelly. Earl will keep you warm till he's over heated! Hang tight boys! Hang tight! When my son was little, he called breakfast for dinner, "night breakfast". It was a treat since the kids were off to school so early and rarely got a good breakfast. The camper is the bomb.

Omg my kids ( now 54 and 53 ) would have loved this vehicle back in the day when we were tent camping ( me too! ). You and Houston should have great times in this! Enjoy it, it’s a beauty!
congrats, hope you enjoy the camper. once you get everything adjusted correctly, you could close the top for the night to keep the heat in a more condensed area for overnight low temps, then open it up in the am. and when in doubt, always close the top if you think there might be snow... :). Dad had a converted f350 van growing into a small living quarters, and no way as extreme as yours... enjoy

Coleman camping gear has an oven set that works on a burner stove also drip coffee maker and 4 slice toaster that works with gas burner on stove currently i have 2 toasters
I used to look at old pickups in Auto Trader! Not only that as a young girl my dad would take me to the old Gypsy car lots in our area and we'd shop the back row for the "good" cars. Ahhh....happy memories
A lot of memories can be made in that rig. That 460 is very underrated motor.

Back wen I was in high school in the mid 70's, I had a friend that worked at a custom van conversion place. It was all the rage back then. He bought a 4WD van that was awesome!!! Enjoy it !

We use to sleep in our van when we were kids. Our van just had a bed and two bucket seats in the back. But we enjoyed our “campouts” lol.
"BELLA" DONNA. Is my suggestion for a camper name. My camper was actually named "Ron".. short for "rendezvous". As camping/camper was our get away. After work we would rendezvous add a favorite campsite❤❤❤ oh how we enjoyed getting away from it all. For at least a weekend. We would even use code words- well, that's why my camper was called "Ron"-- rendezvous. Gosh it was great to get away, albeit a small and tiny space.. We loved it superior to our bigger home (not by much) and very warm home, homey and welcoming.. We made "Ron" magic. Oh the memories. And "Ron" made magic for Me/Us!! Ferl free to use the same moniker. It truly fits.
What a great memory Houston will have! You guys always are having a good time when you are together! Start saving packs of ketchup, Mayo, salt and pepper when you go out for fast food to keep in your camping van!

Making due is what my parents did when we traveled. I was the one who slept up front on the Van when I was younger a friend and her made curtains that covered the van windows for sleeping . We had fun back then .😂😂😂😂
I used those little USB fans to blow the hot air down in my camper! I got them at Walmart!
I work on campers for a living. Been doing it for 13 years. There's all kinds of different BTU LP heaters. You can put in that and you're probably your best bet would be 1500, BTU or a 900 BTU propane heaters
My goodness it brings back memories of me a my son going camping and fallowing the rallies around Ireland and when I drove long distance trucks all over Europe with him the memories you build now will last him all his life that he'll give to his kids
Absolutely do something to make someone smile. It's a blessing and they make them feel about themselves
Drop your canvas roof at night when you're laying down. Your heat won't escape as quickly and you won't need the height. I think you'll have many great adventures with Houston and he'll remember those trips forever! My parents took my 5 sisters and me on camping trips with a pop-up and 50 some odds years later we still giggle over our memories.
This is cool! Some suggestions, you can get a spray bottle and fill equal parts water and vinegar to spray on dishes, to wash, then rinse. For baking : on amazon is a cooling device for baking on stove. A buddy heater for emergency heat. Buy a doggy steps that is waterproof and collapsable for dogs to get in and out or build one. When preparing to go on a trip: preboil potatoes to cut up and cook for breakfast etc, precook sausage patties, just to reheat, and hamburgers. Can always use the hamburger to crumble and make spaghetti. Precook soups or buy canned and baked beans, bring just add water pancake mix with syrup. Its great for sweet tooth also. Or premake peanut butter chocolate balls. There also is a sun oven to take camping that bakes and cooks as long as there is sunshine. No matter summer or winter. Hope some of these ideas help.

25:00 -- maybe you get get some thin foamboard insulation to lay on the floor, then put some new vinyl planking over it. Maybe a half-inch thick would help keep the floor area warmer.
Your wonderful ‘Magical’ van is just that - just wonderful. I’m sure given some time DeJ will travel with you - just give her time. Couple of tents for the younger members and you will be set.

As a fellow homeschooling momma, Houston would thrive with homeschooling. He could be hunting, fishing, trapping all the time and do school when it is convenient. We started homeschooling 5 years ago next week and we have never looked back. We homestead, have a business, are in 4H, and in clubs. Just an idea.
Maybe lower the pop-up at bed time, it will help keep the heat lower in the van. 🤷♂️

I thought this was Primal Outdoors channel when I saw the thumbnail of the van. I've been following him for years. He switched over to a van like this a while back. Welcome to the overland/offroad world.
I learned to drive in a 1970’s Dodge Ram Van. We took that thing for vacations. We had a full size mattress in the very back. There were my parents and us 4 kids. The bench seats were huge. The inside was huge. And I learned to drive that monster when I was 12/13!
Since it's lifted, pops up, and has a few problems, how about calling it "Jacked Up" or since you guys might use it to hunt call it "Deer Stand" or "Deer Slayer" or "Buck", put some deer antlers on the hood, change grill color to camo etc. Alot of possibilities.

I keep a red clay flower pot in my camper and placed it upside down over a burner. this makes a excellent heater.
Daniel, your van has solar panels on the roof. Get yourself a Honeywell electric heater. It will be a good backup, if the gasoline heater gives out. Trust me, those Honeywell heaters are awesome!
