I know right? It at least took a while before card game rouge-likes like Slay the Spire took off, but the speed at which survivor-likes have been popping up is insane.
The number of clones doesn't surprise me. Vampire Survivors was a surprise hit based on a simple concept. Because it was so simple it was easy for competitors to clone. Considering the large number of positive reviews that Yet Another Zombie Survivors has, even though it's in open beta, I'd say that the genre is not oversaturated yet.
@@jimmyhirr5773 I guess I'm mostly coming from personal experience. i bought Vampire Survivors, enjoyed it for like 50 hours, and then I couldn't look at any of the clones
Was playing Holocure last night, thinking about how Vinny would probably really like it, if it weren't for the fact that it's saturated with what to him is functionally nonsense.
I like that around 1:00:00 when Vinlot claimed he was looking at his phone, a boss spawns, dashes at him and immediately gets pulped without him ever noticing.
This was also a dig at the terrible Minecraft mod "yet another better barrel attempt" which is really bad like I'M SORRY I'm sorry GOD it's just TERRIBLE im sorry
If all the Goobies critters had their own sounds, even just quiet squeaks every now and then (and not just when hurt), that would bring more personality to the game. The deafened popping and blip sounds are fine, especially for people just looking for a garliclike that's more chill and cutesie than most. Doesn't always have to be loud and exciting ^-^
The OG of these and still the best to date despite being like 20 years old is Crimsonland. Way more guns, levels, and variety in challenges than the rest of them.
Since it released on Steam, I've been playing it a bunch. It's weird to say it, but the addition of, of all things, fishing, farming, cooking, and house decorating has given it a nice relaxing diversion you can play around with in between runs. And it can actually help with overall progression, as a bonus. I also still enjoy the music and sound design, something I feel is important for this genre.
I glanced past the thumbnail and for a second thought the game on the left was some sort of Baba is You version of these kinds of games. Like, "Baba is You and Garliclike". I don't even know what that'd even actually play like.
I know Vinny probably isn't very into anime Vtubers but Holocure is quite possibly the most incredibly high quality game in this genre, and it's even free.
Vampire Survivors is still fantastic. Crafty Survivors is a close second. Of the ones I don't think you've played, I quite like Nordic Ashes. I just like it when there's fun particle effects and attacks at this point. Strategy is fun but Monkey Brain fun too
i picked up halls of torment after watching your video on it. not usually into 'garlic-likes' but i've REALLY enjoyed that one. i might try the goobies one too, that actually looks pretty decent. cheers pleenyot
Many of these have their specialty, Vampire Survivor has its maps and little events. Holocure does every character having unique kits very well. Soulstone Survivor and Brotato's snowballing. DRG is even getting a survivor.
I feel like the problem with this genre is you can only really get into it once. Once youve gotten the hit of becoming omega powerful in one game with all the upgrades and know what synergies best, it's hard to start over in another game. I tried getting into brotato after 100% vampire survivors, and i felt the dread of having to scoure yet another wiki for a bunch of crap that i wouldn't know otherwise.
Goobies seems like a real fun game to the genre! One of my favorites is still Rogue: Genesia! I think Vinny played it a while back with some other, but it's had a big update and I hope he checks it out again soon. I think Vampire Survivors is still my all-time fav tho.
I haven't played too many of this genre, but my favorite is HoloCure, despite me not really knowing much about what it's based on. I've spent so much time on that game, and it recently got an update which made it even beefier
Vinny asks a question at @1:11:00 ish.... To answer: I don't have one. Closest I can get is like classic Diablo 2 where grinding is like a mild form of this game and broken into self-guided starts and breaks. I am watching this because I was actually curious to see what mechanics from this genre would be cool to mash in, but I feel like D2 does it better by adding more spells. D2 is a very static game, and the only variety I get is from switching characters. But you see these effective movesets that these games have but never fully explore. That said, D2 combat has its own problems, but it has been the only action hack and slash that I find interesting. I think rewards in these horde/Garlic-likes can be improved. The mechanics of gear itself in D2 are like replaceable chunks of builds or upgrades that you have to puzzle-piece together. There's often no equivalent in these games, just the same old roguelite stat tree. Anyway thanks Vinny for showing us really anything, it helps me in its own way.
I swear there were a lot of Flash games in the late 2000s/early 2010s that did something similar to the Vampire Survivor genre that Vinny's into now. This main gameplay loop of fighting off hordes and then collecting loot to buy/earn upgrades isn't exactly new. Does anyone remember games like Bunny Invasion, the Last Stand, or Defend Your Temple 2? I swear they followed a similar formula to this but minus the RNG.
I personally stick with Time Wasters and HoloCure. The latter I don't think would appeal to Vin at all due to what it's related to, but the former I think he might like. It gets weekly updates every Friday currently, and honestly feels pretty good.
I tried our the vampire survivors demo a few months ago but couldn't get into it because it seems so blatant about what it is trying to do. Of course every game is there to feel good and be satisfying but the bluntness of the "numbers go up" style of these games ends up coming across as pointless to me. Like I can just play something like Doom Eternal to get the same feeling but actually have an engaging experience idk
I hate these auto-schüt garlic-likes and I'd have completely forgotten about them if Vinblot didn't play every one that releases every couple of weeks.
I kinda hate how gaming on youtube has pretty much just become "play trend game and then play clones/fangames of said trend game until the next trend game comes along and then repeat"
@@rr53213rr Played a bunch of variants myself before the reskin factor became too jarring. Given he only plays a couple hours each, It's not really surprising he's not burnt out on it yet.
I've been saying for years that one of the things the gaming world needed more of was games that seem to take place on the surface of a slime mold colony, glad to see someone finally listening
I wonder why the goobies part of the stream wasn't just recorded and put after the zombie one to avoid the strange back in time recording
Vinny no
Vinny you're not winning nothing you're canceling the bonus for exp
Vinny STOP!
Oversaturating a new genre within like a year is quite impressive. At least some of them add a new twist to the gameplay loop I guess, but god damn

Truly the svrimbly bimbly of garlikws
Very glankle doop.

The vinklest dorp
I'm starting to wonder if Vinny commissions all these vampire survivor-likes himself
Hey guys I know my game is doing something that's already been done but I've given it a quirky title so it wasn't a pointless endeavour after all!

"Disfigure" is another decent vampire survivors type game, and it's free.
if that zombie thing came out ten years ago it would be considered a classic
It actually kinda did but far worse, it was called Yet Another Zombie Defense
holocure is unironically really good for a garlic if vinny can stomach the anime kyunkyun visuals

Will Vinny be playing the Holo garlic-like?

If he did, all hell will break loose and chat becomes completely insufferable. But his choice of course
Boneraiser Minions is still my favourite of the genre. Fun style and it's always fun to replay!
Halls of Torment is pretty good too.
I can smell your bone stench from here
Vampire survivors has a special sauce to the pacing, synergies, and themes you can build around, so it's still probably my favourite.
The music in Goobies is a bit penisy but i dig it
Yeah it's like penis drum & bass
Since you asked, my favorite Garlic-like so far has been Rogue: Genesia. Just had some of the most satisfying effects in my opinion
I glanced past the thumbnail and for a second thought the game on the left was some sort of Baba is You version of these kinds of games.
Like, "Baba is You and Garliclike".
