📚 Description: I've never really liked the HP series of Gibson guitars... but that was back when there wasn't much "traditional" in the line up. Now that we have all the classic models in the line up - I've been wanting to try one of these old Henry J Era "hyper-modern" Les Paul High Performance models.
I didn't hate this guitar... but I didn't love it either. It is a guitar I could see growing on me though. A bit weird at first, but it starts to become comfortable. And hey - it helped me realize I like coil taps for clean and coild splits for dirty! I didn't quite fully demo this instrument correctly as the controls ended up confusing me - I'll try again another time

It turns out I didn't demo this guitar correctly for the high pass filters + reverse coil selection options.
I'll have to try again in the future - but I hope this video helped you understand some of the possible tones

it's like they tried to put what some use a rotary switch for inside on the PCB. That was the spirit of the circuitry so it's not really surprising. Pretty cool that they basically put a pop/click filter on it (quasi noise gate lol) and also cool that you can turn it off.

You ought to hire someone (or let someone volunteer) who knows how to play guitar to demo the instruments that way we can have a realistic idea of what the guitar sounds like..

@@S-T-E-V-E I agree, Trogly’s demo of the guitars are much more real world. Just like using a race car driver to demonstrate a new car, sure it’s entertaining but I’ll never drive at that level and I shouldn’t pretend that I could or someday will.
Anyway, I like Austin’s demonstrations, very real-life and pragmatic.

I have a 2018 HP2. I can wrap my thumb around it. No problem. My HPII have a thinner neck so I love it, but it has a ritchlite fretboard. I have been harping on him to do this for over a year. Kudos to him doing it. I love Out of Phase. Wish more guitars had that. But, if the price is right snatch one up. I have a burst. Love the Cobalt blue too.

I have this exact model, hot pink fade and all. Mine came with the Grover tuners installed but the G-Force tuners were in the case. I reinstalled the G-Force tuners so it would be as it was as it came from the factory. I played with the DIP switches but wound up leaving them in the down position. A lot of people hated these guitars but people who purchased them love them including the G-Force tuners. I have five Les Paul’s and my HP is the best playing and sounding guitar of them all. Because they were slow sellers, I got a fantastic deal. Great review!

I have a 2018 HP-II in Mojave Fade, and, for me, it is the perfect Les Paul. The asymmetrical neck profile and the compound radius fretboard work very well for me. The tones are amazing and I love the clean look with no pickup rings or pickguard. Glad I got one when they were blowing them out at a massive discount. It's a very unique model with design aspects we will probably never see on a Les Paul again, out of fear of upsetting the traditionalists again lol.

The highpass filters are treble bleed circuits across the volume knobs, so it brightens up when your turn the volume down. And they are not controlled with any push-pull, you just switch them with the dip switch. With pushing or pulling the tone knob, you select if you use the inner or outer coil of the pickup while splittet.

  • @jubei7259
    @jubei7259 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Gotta say, that's one of the best sounding attempts at replicating a single coil tone with buckers that I've heard from a Gibson. Personally, I preferred the tap to the split but they both sounded ok to my ears. For those who complain Gibson are stuck in the mud, making the same old guitar over & over, you gotta kinda congratulate them for trying to cater for a new audience. (Not me though. I'm one of the older, more traditional guys, so I probably wouldn't buy one lol). Kudos for trying to sneak some 'Smooth' vibes in there Trogly my man :)

I have one , and I never been as impressed with a guitar's features and details , as these HP's. The pickups are very sensitive to pick attack. The knobs are sensitive as well : small movt.'s have big results. It's a light Les Paul - my Fender Custom Shop Strat weighs more than my LP HP. The HP's have sustain for days , and great tendency to feedback as the note dies out (personally I LIKE this).
They play like a dream, the neck is super comfortable and responsive.
    I highly recommend these guitars

  • @WeijuWu

Great to see you checking out one of those. I picked up a new one in Mojave Fade back when Gibson ownership changed and GC had them on sale for like 2300-2400 USD.
I love the belly cut, neck profile and that there is no chunky heel. Don't care about the robot tuners and never touched the dip switches (I agree that they are both gimmicky, but they don't really get in the way either, the bass side tuners working in the opposite direction is a bit annoying though)

The dip switches are strange at first but you find your sounds and leave them after that. Heel joint is a nice refinement from standard and the belly carve, MOP inlays, titanium nut & saddled, no pick up rings… all good to me.

Gibson are doing one guitar giveaway each week til the opening of the Gibson Garage store in Nashville on June 9th. USA+Canada only. If you Google "Gibson Garage giveaway" you should find the entry form on Gibson website, and link to their TH-cam channel to watch the draw each Thursday.

I think it’s beautiful and very cool. I heard they were coming and I’ll bet that’s where I got my Epiphone LP Special. They called from Nashville and asked several questions, even if I wanted silk screen or inlay on the headstock AND if I wanted it to say Gibson or Epiphone. I have an extensive Epiphone collection so I chose Epi, I thought it was going to be more to say Gibson but not so. It came perfectly setup and they even put my choice of GHS Boomers .009-.042’s on it. The wrap around tailpiece provides very close to perfect intonation as well with the hand polished SS frets as well. They said the luthiers have total freedom pertaining to the build and I can really tell and hear it. I see and hear what they do with a Firebird with maybe P-90’s AND these pickups they are naming the colors on the bench! The 335 they were working on “Hurricane Champagne” with a blue undercoating under very fine sparkle champagne/gray. I love them! My T-bird bass is a mix of nickel and gold with beautiful fretwork and a butter setup. Both have Gibson cases and cost between $1,100 and $1,200. I’m very happy with both of them and will buy another!!!

The "high pass filter" option is a treble bleed. You won't hear it unless you change the volume. I've also noticed that if you pull up to reverse coil, it's a little more open in the tapped position, so a good compromise for both clean and distorted. I personally find the HP4 circuit quieter (less noise) than the one they used in the standard (and now the Modern and Classic?) and appreciate the reverse coil and treble bleed option.

I have the 2018 HP2 model in a cobalt fade, picked it up new for 2/3 the price. But what spoke to me was the first time I struck a chord was the clarity and tone from the pickups. Imo if you use this guitar with a TS pedal and a tube amp, it really sings just like. Almost PAF like (not a PAF expert) as far as I can tell. Also that neck, if you have large hands, it plays so smooth. The thickness of the neck is tough to get used to though, but you need it with the wideness of it.

Great review Austin. I looked at the HP I back 4 years ago and liked it, but Richlite, Robotuners and the pickups being non-descriptive caused me to be turned me off. I never got to see the HP II, which had locking Grover tuners and a Rosewood fretboard. So, I got a 2018 Gibson Les Paul Standard in Mojave Burst on clearance from a major Gibson Authorized Dealer at the time at a 30% discount. There are no DIP switches, yet there are 4 knobs that do pull up. They are the (1) neck single coil , (2) bridge single coil, (3) out of phase, (4) true bypass. I only use the true bypass from time to time. Mine also has a rosewood asymmetrical, and compound radius with really nice Grover Locking tuners. It is weight relieved but with BurstBucker Pro Pickups, which sound awesome. For comparison, I also have a 2020 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop R0 VOS with unpotted pickups. My 2018 Les Paul Standard rates an 8 out of 10 and that is only because the Custom Shop is a 10 out of 10. There is no comparison to my 2017 Fender American Professional 3 Color with Rosewood Fretboard with H-S-S ShawBucker /Tim Shaw Pickups. The Fender in the ShawBucker Bridge position sounds really nice but rates a 6 out of 10 when compared to the Gibson Les Paul's that I have. If I did not have the Gibson's as a comparison, I would have rated the Fender a 10 out of 10. In the end, I sill would have stayed with the 2018 Les Paul Standard versus the HP II. Thank you for your very detailed review!!

@@Music-zz5il absolutely not, it still feels much like a normal les paul! I actually didn’t like the heel joint much, I much prefer either the standard Gibson neck joint or the way ESP do it in some of their eclipses. That’s actually it, the guitar doesn’t feel as modern as an ESP Eclipse, and doesn’t do the Les Paul thing as well as a regular les paul.
The out of phase sound is great when layering in the studio though, and the neck pickup is phenomenal.

The wide neck wasn't for me when I tried them, but I have arthritis so I need a very specific neck shape. The high pass filter probably helps when playing with high gain and down tuned.

As I get older I find a thicker neck is much more comfortable to play. I found a Telecaster with a 1.10” neck and it is really easy on my hand.
The neck is so big my hand is no longer cramping up. Also, I think the thicker neck gives a guitar a little more resonance.

I like the colours but I dislike the pattern, it's like they took the worst parts of the worst burst finishes, lopped off the bottom part of the basic pattern, and jacked up the contrast even more. Gradual blends look better, sorry. Most burst finishes look like a 90s kid got his hands on Paint Shop Pro, discovered the gradient fill for the first time, and just *had* to show off that he knows how to use it. Subtlety. Jesus.

Does the high pass filter work when you roll back the knob, cutting the bass?
I haven't played one of these guitars but on other guitars, a lot of my favorite sounds were blending the pickups in different modes, single coil bridge with humbucking neck, etc. I can understand not trying to demo all of them, by my count there are 24 possible pickup selections. The differences can be very subtle and mat only be audible when playing certain things, the two different configurations may sound the same when strumming but different when playing arpeggios.

I have done got addicted to this channel…so I finally subscribed... no PU rings makes it look like a deluxe would have been cool to had Mini's in it as a Modern Deluxe... 23:24 the neck pickup is to close to the fretboard so u couldn't add a PU ring later, makes it look like a non Gibson product, along with no fret nibs... I don't see this being a great seller- but would make a collectors item if not many sold also.

My 99 Parker Fly doesn't have pickup rings and used the A string and B string pole piece to raise and lower the pickup. You have to get special made pickups from dimarzio if you want to replace them with something else because they are thinner than a normal Humbucker. Also Dimarzio doesn't do all models because some don't fit.

Transient suppression is probably a very small value capacitor that filters out the sound you can't hear ( above 20kHz ) Except for the price
and wide neck it's something I'd be interested in, especially since you can leave the neck hum-bucking and split or tap the bridge, useful in the middle position.
