Why I'm Selling The Insta360 X3 and Keeping The DJI Osmo Pocket 3

  • I decided to sell the insta360 X3. It's not a bad camera by any means but it just didn't fit my needs. In this video, I'll go over why I picked the DJI Pocket 3 over the Insta360 X3 and what I in particular wasn't happy about with the Insta360 camera system.

While I'm in total agreement that in many use cases, mine included, a 360 camera really doesn't fit well... I don't think it's the fault of the 360 camera at all... nor is it trying to be a jack of all trades. 360 cameras record scenes from vantage points you simply can't get with any other camera and allow super flexibility in the editing in post processing... the problem as you've seen is they don't handle low light well and once edited they are much lower resolution than 4K action cams and vlogging cams. Those downsides won't matter to you when you capture impossible angles of your skiing, parachuting, standing on the edge of a cliff adventures... but for Dad life (and that's me too) just trying to record my family and kids... I'd much rather a high res camera with good low light that I can point and shoot and is no muss, no fuss. With an unlimited budget and with unlimited space in my bag I'd carry it all but we all have to pick and choose most of the time don't we? Hopefully people making decisions on what fits best for them see your examples for reference.

100%, thank you for your comment. I loved the re-framing aspect but ultimately wanted it as a “companion camera” for vlogging and family use. I couldn’t get over the image quality. But is a great system and like you said, doesn’t fit my particular needs right now. Thanks for watching!

I love my 360. I agree the downside is low lighting. However I’m a unique case. I’m wheelchair bound and with minimum hand dexterity. So having the 360 works really well for me. Mount my selfie stick to my chair and I’m good to capture everything. I’d love to use the pocket 3 if I could. Image quality is amazing.

Interesting take on the 360 X3, particularly as your comments resonate with my own experience. Since the very early days on owning the X3 I have been sort of disappointed and in part regretted the purchase. I agree that it is a speciality camera and in that regard not matched, but whichever way you look at it the less than satisfactory image quality is not going to be balanced by what the camera can offer. I have now gone the same way as you and purchased the Pocket 3, I will most probably keep the X3 and accept it as a ‘fun’ camera with limited expectations.

i have both and its the best combo. one is to capture everything without thinking and my pocket 3 to capture specific shots with quality.

I want to buy a poket and keep the insta also..I have an r10 and r6 and I should utilise these for videos but the small format if the poketbis so appealing 😊..in saying this I want to push the limits on the insta 360 and then match it up maybe with the r10 and see if these 2 could work as travel and vlog ..but i just don't want to spend more money on a gimbal 😂

Love the comparison and honesty. I think the Insta360 cameras being 8 bit is a big fail in 2024. They are also being unethical and asking influencers to not mention that they are sponsoring their videos. I love the 360 concept, but the image quality feels like something from 10 years ago.

Keep the x3 but understand its a special purpose camera. I love 360 cameras for holidays when the family is together, put it in the center of the table and record the whole family. Also good for vacations and fun with meta or other vr headsets.

Im doing the opposite, sold my Pocket 3 and kept the insta360 X3. The DJI not only looks frail, but it is actually frail just look at its neck... the x3 on the otherhand doesnt have any external moving parts. Its quite solid especially if you put lens protectors. But the neck of the DJI, you cant do much about it.
What i also love about the X3, its perfect if you want to capture everything, as in everything, since it records 360 degrees- left, right, up and down... And kust choose and reframe it all you want at post.
Ive experienced missing good shots with DJI just because i wasnt able to frame it at the time for whatever reason during my trip for example. Not with X3. At times, im plesantly surprise and discover some shots i didnt realize i got when im reviewing my X3 footages ...after"rotating" frame in post. When im already back home from my trip.

I find the X3 to be an ‘activity’ camera, I got some amazing footage underwater with it!
But the quality overall is not good, I also don’t like how it distorts the angles!
    But it has its pros.
The pocket 3 is the Best of the Best for proper vloggers

Insta360 X3 is an action camera and DJI pocket 3 is a vlogging camera. They just made for different purposes and I take both w/ me when I travel. What i like about the X3 is that it captures everything and i like the editing part as it gives me many options when framing and does a lot of fun tricks. If you're posting videos on youtube then it's the pocket 3. Social Media - X3 .

This is really helpful. We're in the process of figuring out which to get and this really looked at some of the reasons we weren't sure about the X3 and was leaning towards to the osmo. Thanks!

i think this is the difference in use cases between vloggers and people who are mainly interested in action. x3 is the most interesting camera for skiing/snowboard videos. Also think this is why there is so much confusion around what is "best" between the Ace Pro/Action 4/GoPro 12 - depends on what set of tradeoffs are important to each person.

    • @TomWadeCine
      @TomWadeCine  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yup, Exactly! All great cameras with specific trade offs. X3 happened to not work for me in particular but works for many. Thanks for watching!

  • @tong.clement
    @tong.clement 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Agreed. The problem is we need 8k minimum (5k=1080p), DJI color science (no over sharpening), and a smaller body for the Insta360 X3 (too bulky and dangerous for action sports) - waiting for the X4

sold my x2 because i wanted to carry just one camera (aside from my phone) and i chose my pocket 2. months later i regretted my decision. the x2 can do things the pocket 2 cant and vice-versa. my youtube videos are shot with the pocket 2 while my tiktok and facebook videos with the x2. so i bought an x3 and plan to upgrade my pocket 2 to pocket 3. 😊

I have the X3 as secondary or when looking for unique angle. Creating drone like shot or 3rd person without worry that the camera is not pointing to the correct direction. there are some shot that require more equipment that you can do it with just the X3. thats the reason I haven't sell mine.

Can this new Pocket3 be used as a USB webcam? I bought the Pocket1 and never used it. I would have used it as a webcam, but it wouldn't. So I gave it away and got a GoPro Max 360 camera.

The Pocket 3 is a great new camera, and far exceeds the capabilities of the Pocket and Pocket 2. I have the Pocket 3, the DJI Action 4, and the Insta360X3. All of them have points that are worth considering. The Action 4 is a beast, and outperforms GoPro in most every area. It also is great for filming the Grandkids in the swimming pool. The Pocket 3 is great at clean clear shots, with actual focusing capability, and is especially great in low light performance. The Insta360X3 is great for those shots that you just can't get with any other camera. When I combine footage from all 3 in a single video, I get constant questions on how I was able to make such a video - Great way for opening fun conversations!

I love 360 for action only not vlogging bc of the grainy image especially inside. I’m thinking about the pocket 3 but my z flip 5 has been doing a great job with vlogs. I still want a vlogging camera so this might be a good reason to just buy it

There's something wrong on your end. I've never had an issue with quality or graininess. Low light does SUCK BAD, however. Like so bad I never plan on using it near dusk.
I use it for action camera, so my use is far different from yours.

Not sure what I’m doing wrong but it’s just so much easier to get a better image on the dji or my Sony a7s3. Love the 360 reframing though. Maybe the insta360 system will make sense to me in a few more years as the system develops.

For a young family with kids the 360 x3 is a great choice. The pocket 3 is a great camera but you "need to know" what you want in the video.
The 360 x3 lets you capture everything and decide later. Just forget the camera and enjoy the moment.
With a 360 camera people tend to act a little closer to normal since the camera doesn't give the appearance of pointing at anyone.
With multiple people, you might want a little clip of everyone and the 360 will allow you to render a video tracking each person separately so with a family you never miss anything or anyone.
The quality of the pocket 3 is great but in true action or "one chance" shots you will miss a lot.
If you can only afford one camera it's your call. You could always put the 360 on a backpack selfie stick and shoot with two cameras. :)
Everyone has different needs so pick what's right for you. This is just food for thought for people that read comments. Have a great day and be safe out there!
