DJI Osmo Pocket 3 - Honest review after using it for over 2 months!

  • I've owned the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 for two months now. Though I haven't used it as much as I'd like to have and I don't exactly have 'amazing cinematic' examples of what it can do, I still feel like I have a good idea of what this little device is all about. The image is great considering the price. In fact, if you look at this video, it holds up quite well against my R5C with expensive (3k) lens attached. The battery with the handle has been more than enough for what I'd ever need and the microphone is just awesome. Overall, if you need a compact camera that gives you stabilised footage, this little thing is hard to beat. I really wish DJI would make a 'pro' version. Leave any questions you have in the comments and I'll get back to you.

    I bought it for taking video of my son’s basketball games and it’s absolutely awesome. It’s not as high resolution as my Sony A7R5 but I use it literally every game on a selfie stick and base so it stands alone on the floor. I absolutely love this camera. 👍🏽

    How surprising. A full-frame top-of-the-game $5k+ camera+lens+gimbal combo outperforms a handheld device that costs less than $700. It’s meant to be an easily accessible carry-around vlogging tool, not a professional device. In my opinion, there is absolutely no need to make a $1500 pro version, because your Canon will outperform that one too. And you won’t give the footage to your clients anyway. I appreciate the effort that you put into this video. However, I find it unnecessarily critical. It’s like making a long video about how a Ferrari cannot carry as much as a truck, and how it may get stuck on rough terrain. For anyone who is watching, and only wants to use this device for vlog/lifestyle videos: you won’t regret purchasing it. If you want to use it for commercial movie production, you should spend 10x more.

      You wont use it for cinema for sure and ofcorse 5K camera lens gimbal combo is better…..but does this combo fits in your bag? I had the first pocket since it came out until the end of 2023….than it was stolen from me…You know what? Than i realised how exactly i was using it. I’ve never used it as a A camera, but as B or C camera when i needed that extra angle it was just perfect and i’ve had it always with me. I remember when i bought the GH5 and it was my A cam until the S5ii… now i use 2xS5ii and i leave the GH5 and the GH5s at home……but sometimes i still wish i had the pocket with me as C cam or for bts footage……So i bought the pocket 3 today. HUGE improvement in quality. This 1 inch sensor really makes a difference.

      I loved the everything about the video: picture quality, audio, the way info was presented and this really helped me not only understand the capabilities and limitations and how I might use it. Inside the church looked really good. Streaks & ghosting is one place mirrorless cameras have an advantage over the pocket or cell phones by using lens hoods and zoom lenses.

    Absolutely agree with you that a pro version is required. The camera on the pocket 3 is just not good enough and it's use case for me is reserved for when filming on on my mirrorless is not allowed and its night time/low light and my iphone won't work. Thats a pretty specific use case. Still blown away by how no camera company has autoconnect microphones like the pocket 3 does so its still useful for that as well but generally i cant quite figure out its use in my vlogs when i have all these nicer cameras and better mics as well.

    Great little review, Hugh. I'm totally with you in having little bits like that that you can keep in the bag without a second thought, but that pull you out of a hole more often than not - I used to make sure and bring the Sennheisers on shoots with corporate clients, and only break the DJI Mics out in case of emergency, but I've stopped completely, and have even recommended to certain clients that they get their own set.
    Here's my question though: Even if you can't see a massive business case for this, you've got bigger and better cameras and stabilizers, is it worth just throwing this into the rotation and leaving it there for when you're under the cosh and haven't time to balance a gimbal? Like how many times has that saved you on a shoot where you grab it, shoot it, and forget it?

    • @HuFilms
      @HuFilms  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks a lot. On a 'higher end' job in which I was filming pre-planned shots with the intention of capturing as nice as footage as possible, then I would opt to put the time into setting up the gimbal. It takes me about 4 minutes to go from camera in bad to first gimbal shot so that's not long. We spend a lot more time than that doodling around with other gear anyway. I would use the Osmo for convenience, and to grab quick bits for social media and the likes but I wouldn't use it as my main camera. The light flares from it are pretty bad.

    Firstly, thank you for a brilliant review, just found you by chance on YT and now subscribed. Still sitting on the fence regarding the photo quality of this camera. Yeah, I get the fact it’s more for filming but I still like to take stills and thought this would be a nice little camera for that too. Having lost the use of my legs now, before this I was always out with camera in hand. I don’t class myself as a professional however I have been taking photos for many years all over Scotland and just love Architecture & Landscapes. Hand grip is not that solid anymore either, so therefore holding a DSLR is becoming more challenging! I’ve been looking for something simple, light, easy to operate but still unsure if this will be the answer. Your review has certainly given me a great insight to its functions however, it has also given me a lot to think about too. Look forward to following you on YT thanks again.

A single hand version as big as the original Osmo that has the option of licenced cinema dng would fullfill our mutual pro impulse. @Ozpeter 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@HuFilms My tongue was slightly in my cheek but I do suspect they would want to be careful that a more pro version of the Pocket 3 didn't undermine the 4D for budget-constrained videographers. We'll see... Anyway I have now watched the video. It's a great different angle on a possibly over-discussed device! Here's some random responses -
      - The supplied cover has been associated - rightly or wrongly but I think probably rightly - with damage to the screen, which may get dragged on when the camera is pulled out. Personally I recommend the ScottyMakesStuff cases, which of course make the device a bit more chunky and more suited to the camera bag than the pocket. The "Pro" model which also accommodates the battery handle protects the gimbal to some degree even when filming as you can lay the camera down and the gimbal doesn't foul the surface (eg a table). Also, the added weight helps with stability when walking as the extra inertia reduces Z plane bobbing.
      - You rightly mentioned the problem with faces getting a bit dark when against the sky - another reviewer has shown how that doesn't happen with "normal" mode but seems to be a log issue. Maybe in normal mode there's some AI stuff going on to approach exposure in a more than simple way. That reviewer said he was ditching log shooting for normal with this device. Well, I guess it depends on all the circumstances of the shoot.
      - Histogram etc is available in the Mimo app. When you use the phone as a viewfinder of course there's more screen real estate for additional displays.
      - Obviously the gimbal mode chosen is a personal thing and dependent on the shot, but it's a shame it's not easy to change modes just like that. However, if using follow mode and there's a need for tilt locking for a few moments, pressing in the joystick and holding it applies a full lock (which is ok if you don't need to pan at that moment). And that allows you to re-align the handle to the direction in which the camera head is pointing, without recourse to the recenter function which will cause a sudden jerk in the picture. You can even use that full lock to walk right around the camera (anticlockwise) and into the picture, as if it was on a tripod.
      - For cycling it's worth mentioning that it's not a good idea to mount the camera to the bike. It doesn't like vibration. But here I am clearly talking to an expert!
      - The "audio backup" function which causes the camera to record the output from the excellent built in mics to a wave format audio file, while any external mic is recorded to the AAC audio of the video file, is worth mentioning. I mean, it's a four channel audio recorder which happens to shoot video too!
      - Good point about the flaring, which doesn't get much mention.
      - Chucking it in the bag when going out on a pro shoot with the "real" gear reminds me of the days when I used to do location sound recording of classical concerts for a living. I always chucked a simple stereo audio recorder with built in mics in the bag so that whatever failed, I could at least come away with something!
      Anyway, enough, I've written a novel again... Great video, thanks for posting!

    They have a pro version, it’s called the Ronin 4D and it even stabilizes vertical bob, but yeah it’s pricey. I don’t personally think there’s much of a market for a $1500+ pocket camera like this even with upgraded specs. People who want that already have plenty of mirrorless options. Hopefully BlackMagic comes out with something similar to a compact RED box cam soon, I’d love a compact Super35 cinema cam with mini XLR ins and a built-in 5-7” touchscreen monitor. Bonus points if it takes mini V mount.

    • @HuFilms
      @HuFilms  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Ronin 4D isn't a 'pro Osmo'. If it was a pro Osmo they'd call it the 'Osmo Pro' not a Ronin 4D. You don't hold a Ronin 4D as a vlogging tool and point it at yourself holding it with one hand which is essentially what an Osmo is designed for. A 1500 bucks version of this that was waterproof, has better dynamic range, is easier to expose manually, has an adjustable focal length and maybe better 120 fps, would sell like hot cakes in my opinion. I'd be the first to buy it. Thanks for the comment though.

    Great review, but never going to work as good as action cameras for biking / cycling since I have tried it with these, with any kind of subtle bad roads you get a lot of jitters that the footage is unusable. Best camera for action activities is either a 360 camera (since you can reframe ) or any action camera as they stabilize crazy good and there's no digital stabilization in the pocket camera.

    New Feature Requests for the New DJI OSMO Pocket 3
    1. Add a dwelling time for each of up to four settable movement positions in Motion Time-Lapse Mode. As each of the four settable positions programmed into a motion time-lapse sequence is reached, the end user could set from 1 to 10 seconds of a pause in gimbal movement as each programmed position is reached during the sequence before the gimbal moves forward to the next programmed position. This would yield a much more dynamic and professional looking, smoother motion time-lapse sequence.
    2. In Motion Time-Lapse Mode the ability to set movement ease in and ease out settings from 0.5 to 3 seconds for each programmable gimbal position before gimbal movement normal progression rate is reached.
    3. True 24.00p filming speed.
    4. The ability to set time-lapse sequences based on 24.00p.
    5. The ability to be able to record from the DJI Mic 2 and from a plugged in via USB audio source at the same time.
    6. Adding a 10 Bit 4:2:2 recordable video codec.

    I think I watched everything in the last weeks, but your video gives a fresh approach. I shoot short reportages alone, docs and mainly portraits and I bought the Osmo for my second camera. The ease of use, the fast shooting, uploading and editing and the size(I am standing really close to people, and they don't realize that I am shooting, let alone in their direction- i made a lot of really natural interviews ) makes it a fantastic news gathering tool. In my line of work quality is not as importantt as in a commercial video, I definitively will use it professionaly, it just hits the minimum requirement with the 1 inch senzor and in cases where you have to shoot as a fly on the wall, it is a better tool than my canon rigged up. Any tips on colouring to go beside canon footage on a same timeline? -2 sharpness, and a little bit reduction in saturation are my secret weapons, but I would love it if somebody would make a pro lut to convert it to be as close as possible to Canon footage

    You’re not really describing the degree of hassle it takes to pack, mount, balance, charge, and move around with a big camera on a large gimbal. The pocket 3 is an absolute beast for the size and convenience of the system, and the quality it produces.

    • @HuFilms
      @HuFilms  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It only takes me about 3 minutes to get up and running with a gimbal. On most 'work' jobs, that time is minuscule in comparison to other factors such as planning shots and adjusting items in the composition. Of course the osmo is going to be way more convenient, that's why it's a seller but if you want the best possible shots, a few minutes to setup isn't a big deal. Not for me anway.

      @@HuFilms even traveling and allowing for more packing space for the gimbal and camera gear is a hassle. I don’t do photography or videography for work but my gimbal sits at home. Unfortunately I have returned my Oslo pocket 3. Very good image quality for this size. But...
    The Gimbal have big problems to follow the person of interest because your tracking prioritize the face and not the whole human.
    For example when a dancer hides his face with his hands or another move where his face is not captured by the camera, the gimbal cannot follow him. It is annoying. There is another cameras that doing better now.
    I would love to buy the Osmo Pocket 3 again as soon as the gimbal gets the tracking system used by DJI in his Drones.

I was actually fooled into thinking this might be better than my GH4 in low light since the sensor was much bigger!! But its not?? How??
