Bradley Whitford's reaction is just amazing, I believe that for a show to be truly great the actors need genuine love for their co stars, the west wing had that massively
seoul588 I miss TWW every single day (Thank God for Netflix. :) ). I miss John Spencer just as much. That said, they REALLY couldn't have ended the show as well as they did because of John Spencer's very untimely death. The way TPTB (The Powers That Be... the writers, producers, etc.) took Spencer's death and just kinda ran with it on the fly (sort of) still boggles my mind to this day. Did you know, up until Spencer passed away, TPTB were planning on having Santos lose the election? TPTB had originally written the ending in such a way that Vinick (played by the irreplaceable Alan Alda) was going to win the election. Spencer's death changed all of that, and the writers ended up having to do a major rewrite of some future scripts so that the show would end the way it eventually did (everybody knew, going into the first season, that TWW would only run for seven seasons). I read somewhere that the reason TPTB made the change to Santos winning the election was because TPTB didn't want to further depress the viewers by having Santos lose the election AND his friend, Leo, in one fell swoop. RIP, John Spencer. :(
I just finished watching all 7 seasons of the WW. It is without a doubt, the best written show I've ever watched in my 60 years. Yes, I'm late to the party, but so glad I came 20+ years later.
ya,. you should definitely watch The Newsroom. It's also sorkin doing very well at writing. Very similar. And it's genuinely just really good. It's awesome you got to experience a show you liked this much, though. Good for you :)
And keep in mind, it's almost always the case when we're than 1 actor or actress from a show is nominated it dilutes the vote so someone else wins. So it was actually more of an accomplishment for him to get it with so many West Wing brilliant people nominated!
It was probably the greatest show I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and any number of other high quality shows. None of them were as consistently well written, well acted and impactful as WW.

"Deliciously redundant." What a lovely turn of phrase. It's often said, but it's never truer than when it's said about John Spencer... he was gone far, far too soon. Watching Leo's funeral still makes me cry. One of the great actors of our time.
I just re-watched this video again a couple minutes ago. It never dawned on me up until now how many of John Spencer's fellow actors, both on and off the show, had literal tears of joy in their eyes for their friend and colleague. They were GENUINELY happy that he finally had won an Emmy. That's something you don't see every day in egocentric Hollyweird. I'm just sayin'...
RIP John Spencer, just finished season 7 of West Wing after being completely isolated from spoilers the entire run. What an amazing actor, my favorite character on the show.
+Jeffrey Zhang "Josh" haha... After watching a lot of the interviews and the Harvard West Wing reunion, it's so clear how Sorkin ended up writing the real Bradley Whitford into Josh.
I met him once at the Helen Hayes awards and got the opportunity to speak with him over a drink. He was one of the kindest and most genuine people I’ve ever met. He died shortly after and I’ve never felt more devastated by a loss of someone I barely knew. He was a national treasure.
-Almost finished with watching the entire series, only three episodes left. I'm in tears. The writing is brilliant as are the actors. John Spencer was definitely my favorite. What a class act and a presence unlike any other. Rest in Peace, John.
This is one of the rare occasions where the phrase "well-deserved" is truly spot-on. The only issue with this Emmy is that it was his first and only one. The reactions of the WW cast members were exceptionally awesome.. make you wanna play it over and over again :)
+Mohammad Elayan I thought so too, especially Bradly W. who kind of slams the ground just to get up! I love this series and I kind of fear that nothing will ever compare to it while I'm still alive
One of the most adroitly written, brilliantly acted TV series of all time. Would that we be governed real-time by such committed patriots. John Spencer, thank you. Peace.
The plot line involving Ansley Hayes is one of my favorites. JS was remarkable at portraying what I wish in my heart could be true about our democracy. When Ansley returned for Leo’s funeral was very moving.
As thrilled as I am that John won, my favorite part of this was how happy everyone else was for him; Bradley Whitford's reaction was fantastic. Clearly, the love and camaraderie on The West Wing are also true in real life, and that's what makes the show and this cast so great. They really are a family, and that's wonderful.
Am just watching 'Bartlet for America' and had to come here and rewatch Johnny Spencer winning his Emmy. Such a gracious, worthy winner, and you only have to see how happy his castmates are for him to know he was a good person and a great actor.
As a fan , of his from LA Law and recently view him in The West Wing. I'm in such appreciation Mr. Spencer the man and the actor. May you continue shine upon us who adore your work.
I think that scene in The West Wing when Josh breaks down after Leo dies isn't acting: I think the actors had so much respect for each other that those were legitimate tears Bradley was crying
I totally agree! And that hunting scene when President Bartlet/Martin Sheen, has that far away, grief filled devastated look as a pallbearer. I don't think he had to act it at all
@@lilavodaman I would usually agree with you BUT when a show has been off the air for almost 15 years, I think it's reasonable that folks are discussing all of the show. John Spencer died in real life so we all KNEW oh so sadly Leo would meet the same fate. At the time it was well known that the cast was devestated by his loss. He completely deserved that award. No performance on the show floors me as often and as hard as John's. He was an amazing actor, but more importantly he was an amazing man. Words cannot express the pain of losing such a talented man. May he rest in peace.

Yes, there will never be an equal....the West Wing had the best ensemble cast ever, and without question some of the best writing, directing, producing and music ever. John Spencer was a class act in a cast filled with class acts. Nobody writes better for TV than Sorkin, and Snuffy Walden has been putting together great music for TV shows since back in his days working on Thirtysomething; his use of Jeff Buckley's recording of Hallelujah in the episode, Posse Comitatus, was brilliant.
I come back to John’s acceptance speech here to feel connected to him. What he says at the end, as an actor, chokes me up every time. He reminds me of why I do it in a way. What a mensch. What an actor.
its so surreal to see in there individual persona's in the characters they portray. bradly (josh) jumping up and being so animated, john (leo) having that smirk and gestures that are so adored in the show. having a heart attack in season 6, his death being played into the script for season 7... its almost easy to forget that it happened in real life while watching the show, the realization adds so much more emotion to the final episodes of the west wing. RIP
Seriously.....4 out of 6 nominated in this category from the West Wing....thats amazing and shows you just how great of a show this was. Is there anyone who deserved that Emmy more? and so much more. John your missed RIP.

John Spencer was an exceptional actor -- the episodes about his alcoholism were meticulously and beautifully acted. Such talent on that show.
