- The defeat at Ankara in 1402 was the first real setback for the Ottoman empire. Its sultan - Bayezid became a hostage of the new conqueror Timur, and soon sons of the sultan started fighting each other in order to get to the throne. This period is called Ottoman Interregnum, but it was basically a Civil War between 6 princes. Eventually, this civil war came to an end, and as the agressive invasion of the South and Central Europe continued, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Transylvania, Lithuania, Wallachia, Bohemia, Ruthenia and others started a crusade called the Crusade of Varna against the Ottoman sultan Murad II. The crusade was concluded in 1444 with the battle of Varna between Murad II on one side, king of Poland and Hungary Wladyslaw III and voivode of Transylvania John Hunyadi on the other.

After the death of Wlaclav we had right after a Laszlo. :-) . Both name is Vladislav (a slavic name and I guess it means rulers of people) but while Wlaclaw is polish, Laszlo is hungarian version. Though this Laszlo (the fifth) was a very weak, liar, flighty child king, fortunately for us Hunyadi was the governor of the kingdom during his period.

There was one amazing aspect of psychological damage that you may have missed out on. The janissaries immediately mounted the kings head on a spike to demoralize the crusaders and that sealed the fate of this battle

@@liamjm9278 Unification of Anatolia took longer. During Bayazid I reign, he united Anatolia under Ottoman banner and many Lords (beys) escaped and took refugee in Timurid Empire. Timur defeated Bayazid in 1402 and reinstated some of the Beyliks (Karamanids, Dulkadir, Ramazanid Emirate) until Selim I these Beyliks became bumper states between Ak Koyunlu and Turco-Mamluk State in Syria and Egypt, Safavids etc. Mehmed II defeated Ak Koyunlu and removed considerable amount of opposition in Eastern Anatolia and Central Anatolia. But southeast Anatolian States (Such as Ramazanoglu and Dulkadiroglu) and some opposition in East Anatolia remained shift sides constantly sometimes with Turco-Mamluks, sometimes with Ottomans sometimes with Safavids. Selim I started his campaign in Anatolia, first defeated Safavids and removed any influence from them (Started in 1505 until 1514) after he moved against Mamluks (1514 to 1517) and decisive victory against these two empires removed any opposition in Anatolia against Ottomans. So it took longer than 100 years. (Exactly 115 years)

I'm afraid that's my view of it. hopefully I will never experience war and will study the historical battles only to learn about history...but I do find them delightful O_o
Many combatants back then loved war because of the opportunity to gain booty. However, they probably didn't like the fighting as such because of the high risk of dying. War really sucked for the peasants but nobody cared for their opinion.

The world would've been so different if the crusaders had won the battle of Varna. Especially if they had captured Murad...
Orthodox Christianity was against the Turk in this one and Crusaders did not steal rape and took slaves after having their way with the city for 3 days.
Rumours of ottoman weakness caused Pope Eugene IV to call for a crusade against them in 1443. With the West still embroiled in the Hundred Years’ War, the king of Hungary and Poland, Wladyslav III, took on the cause to finally expel the scourge of Christendom from Europe. Led by general John Hunyadi, The white knight, the Hungarian army saw initial sucess, but the battle of Varna was ultimately defeated. The abdicated Sultan Murad II came back to aid his son and led the Ottoman army to victory at the battle of Varna where King Wladyslav was killed. Peace was eventually signed but the way for further Ottoman expansion into Eastern Europe now lay open....

What are u fucking kidding me? I have never run into ming early game but in late stages of the game, they are a joke. I was allied to them and they kept getting crushed by the Japanese. So I broke the alliance and managed to conquer the whole of korea(which was their tributary state), few of their provinces and currently have a claim on Beijing and Xinhua (their richest provinces) which are basically defenceless. I did this as Ajuuraan. And they just make request which make no sense like asking me to become a tributary state when I am the 3rd greatest power and they arent even on the list.
That is a good example why Mehmed II, legalised the killing of brothers in the Ottoman dynasty when he became Sultan. So that the undisputed Sultan can focus in conquests without worrying about another claimant to his throne. Thanks for the video!
I would suggest you to check 'Fatih Kanunnamesi', written law of Mehmed II.
It states that:
"Whoever gained the throne among my predecessors, may kill his own brothers for the sake of stability of the Empire."

That is correct. My point is that this period of game of thrones shows the motive and rationality of Mehmed II's action of legalizing it. It’s interesting how Timur’s defeat and capture of the Sultan at the battle of Ankara caused such a crisis.
I would think normally, such a devastating loss would be the end of a state or kingdom. The Ottomans survived and, in another twist of history, then grew stronger from the conflict.
If the Ottoman’s had not controlled the European domains already, they may not have survived the mess of Interregnum. Also, the Ottomans did have their unique version of dynastic succession to help.

Unlike the European dynasties, the Ottomans had no laws governing the succession.
One of the effects of Timur's invasion was a demographic change in the Balkans - almost half of the Turkic tribes were his enemies, and they were slowly moving away from Timur and joining the Ottomans. Many of them crossed to Europe.
Timur burned shit ton of trees and forests in central anatolia and these trees didnt growed again :(
As per the other comment below, about Timur burning the trees of central Anatolia, it is another interesting fact that the result of Timur's conquest and onslaught of Anatolia was the reshuffling of allegiances of the Turkic tribes in the peninsula. (One obvious enemy, the former Seljuk Turks, had their capital at the city of Konya and were former vassals of the Mongolians).
Some of beyliks, or feudal lords, tried to dislodge the Ottoman's from their position of power in Anatolia once Timur conquered the Ottoman Sultan.
Some of the beyliks, supported the Ottomans and their rule.
Some of the beyliks, supported rival brothers and relatives to the dead Sultan following Ankara and Timur.
The result of these politics, and the culture of Ottoman style succession of power, led to the powerful Murad II putting the pieces of empire back together, even stronger than before.

Forgot to mention the Karamanids, in name, along with the Seljuk Turks. Esp. since the Karamanids came after the Seljuks, and were the main opposing Turkic Beylik to oppose the eventual hegemony of the Ottomans over Anatolia.

Actually its not quite accurate he called his father because he had to. His grand vizier used janissaries againts him. He even wanted to lead the army himself alone.

Ottomans had arguably strongest administration and law system of that time. We can add tolerancy of the empire, but not for moral values: According to islamic law, you cannot put heavy taxes on muslims, so ottomans didnt want everybody convert to islam. Once non-muslims paid more taxes (but not very heavy) and accept ottomans rule; they could believe what they want, no military obligation and they were protected. Good deal :-) Imo, that's why people of ottomans had some degree of loyalty, otherwise 13 years of civil war is more than enough time to break down

Some countries' kings had obligaton to pay taxes and bring soldiers to war, but they were not citizens and that is not the case. Please do yourself a favor, read some history and see what timar system is and how Ottoman army consist of.
WheresWallace4883; it was cruel, but believe it or not, according to so many sources, most of time Christian families were looking for acemioglan choosers to make their child janissary. It was an excellent career opportunity. I mean even today there is few country can stay together if they go 13 years of civil war let alone empires. If people were loyal to ottomans, obviously they must had strong reasons.
WheresWallace4883 lol, Christian parents are proud and those who are not should be proud for the janissary system, it's one of the best social mobilization tool at that time. And no, Janissaries don't forget their past, a Janissary soldier could buy his Christian parents a house in Istanbul

This isn't the first time the Turks survive a nation-wide disaster or invasion. Prior to Timur, the Turks of the Seljuk Empire in Anatolia managed to pick themselves back up after the invasion of the Mongols. The Turks also managed to pick themselves up after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, committing everything they had for their nation and homeland.
There's an old saying among the Turks: "Devlet gider, Töre kalir."
Translating roughly as: "The state may be transient, but the morals/customs are permanent."
The old and original Turkish culture was a very disciplined one, with an extremely high regard for morals and decency, where faith in God was the central foundation in their society. This was true even up until the foundation of the modern Turkish republic, after which the Turkish culture went through a dramatic overhaul, though it still retains traces from its deep roots, which is especially evident when the Turkish nation is pushed to their limits.
I think the Turks are facing another potential nation wide disaster today, with external and internal foes bearing down on them on all sides. Maybe if they can return to their true selves, they might become a dominant force once again through all those trials. God only knows.
There are many more Turkic empires in history, including the Timurids, but I think roughly these are direct successors of each other, spanning over at least two millennia and three large continents:
Huns --> Gökturks --> Karakhanids --> Seljuks --> Ottomans --> Turkey --> ?

By the way Timur and "Timurids" were Turkic, too.
So during the Ankara war, the Karaman (Beylik) tribe switched their side while the ottoman side was winning, as a revenge for the Ottoman conquest of their lands.

Losing so many men in so many battles with quick succession and still being able to raise a big army to stop an ongoing, already successful Crusade is a huge deal, an example of unshaken morale, really. But, as in many Ottoman victories against European powers, the cost in casualties is big. And it seems every Ottoman campaign against Europe grew ever more costly, in terms of manpower, money and equipment, up until 17th century, when expansion became unsustainable and high taxation and recruitment began to show their consequences, as the impoverished and decimated populace of both Anatolia and the Balkans rose up in rebellion multiple times, only to be brutally suppressed by the capital each time. This weakened the empire even further, since the sipahi recruitment system broke down, as local vassals withdrew their support or rebelled against the throne, and more and more people had to be recruited into Janissary ranks to defend and police the empire, to suppress rebellions and to campaign abroad, swelling the numbers tenfold within five-six decades, until 1600. Those Janissaries didn't stay loyal very long though. In exchange for their services they began demanding higher wages and more campaigns in order to acquire booty (which they couldn't when defeated), even aligning themselves with rival factions and deposing sultans. Very much like Roman Empire actually. The rest, as you all will know, is a downward slope...

Nomadic armies like Turkish armies were always outnumbered against the Crusaders before 16th century. Ottomans had manpower only during the 16-17th centuries and that's mostly because Turks began to settle and left nomadic life. As a result they began to form armies like in europe with more infantry. Horse archers gradually declined in numbers.
Secondly, After the battle of Mohacs in 1526, European armies couldn't dare to face Turkish armies in a pitched battle, they only fought behind walls/castles.
In the first Crusade, 8000 Seljuk Turks attacked 40.000 strong Crusader army . They killed 6000 Crusaders and lost 3000 soldiers. (According to Eurpean historians)
In 1071 in Manzikert 20.000 Seljuk Turks crushed 40.000 strong East Roman Army.

Murad II probably the most hard working and the most troubled emperor of the Ottoman Empire. The Empire wasn't on their prime and he had to overcome all obstacles that he experienced.

Some details were missing: Wladyslaw broke the peace because the pope threatened him that he would excommunicate him if he is not continuing the crusade.
The Venetian & Genosian fleet were late and could not stop the osmans transport their troops from Anatolia to Europe.
Hungarian sources tell that the crusader army was 20 000 man strong while the turkish force were larger 40 000 or more.
After the battle Hunyadi managed to retreat with the remaining army after Wladyslaw fell and the Osman reserve and Janissary counterattacked. The crusaders lost 12 000 man while the turkish forces lost almost 20 000. It was a close battle, because the Hungarian king with his polish and Hungarian knights almost reached Murad breaching the Janissarys first line but then the Sultan's bodyguards overwhelmed them and killed and beheaded the king demoralizing the christian army.

and polish-hungarian friendship since then (and in fact much earlier) lasts untill today, true friendship where absolutley different nations, different languages, different ethnicities have very good relations prooven time and time and time again

I heard about it. One of the earliest versions of the European Union. :-) I guess, Poles and Hungarians had some problems between the WWI and WWII, but yeah, they were generally allies.
We changed the way we research a little bit. For instance, now we release more series, which means that reading enough sources on one period (Napoleonic Wars) or one empire (Ottoman series) is more than enough. Saves time.
yep, seems legit - and that series could become one 'movie'... sort of movie
its allways better to focus on some period and continue narration in certain order, because in history one thing is result of other, things are connected and jumping too much between subjects creates a little mess :)
