Well from the Wallachain perspective Mircea took the right decision: why loose his troops when himself and Sigismund told the french time and time again to atack together.
Mirchea was a wise and clever ruler. I like how he dressed up as a peace emissary before the battle of Rovine and talked to Bayezid asking him to leave Wallachia and promising him safe passage back.
An example of how arrogance and excessive pride can lead to defeat and death. Sigismund and Mircea proposed that the Wallachian infantry attack first since they had experience against the Ottomans from the previous years of fighting and the first line of the Ottoman soldiers consisted of slighty weaker troops used to tire the enemy until the Spahis joined to attacked the tired and disorganised enemy, but the French refused because they thought that they will lose the opportunity to gain honor and prestige in favour of the Wallachians
But you saw the video. Had they stayed and fight they would of saved the French knights and possibly would of won the battle or at least save the knights and allow for an ordered retreat.

Wow, you guys are improving at a stellar pace. The change of narrators is really helping, and you've stopped sounding too dramatic. Keep up the good work! That said, I spotted two minor errors in this video: Firstly, the Knights Hospitaller's army appears to originate from Malta, which is perhaps their best-known base, but in the 1390s they were stationed on Rhodes, which they acquired in 1310 and lost in 1522. Secondly, you referred to the Hungarian capital as Budapest, but Budapest was created as a unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda in 1873, Buda having been the capital until then. I could see why you might want to call it Budapest just for the audience's sake, but it would only take a second to say e.g. "Buda, the Hungarian capital" instead, and it'd be more accurate!
As always, an awesome and very enjoyable video! Just a tiny correction: the capitol of Hungary of this time was Buda - Buda (on the left side of the Danube) and Pest (on the right side of the Danube) was two different city utnil 1873, when the two has been merged into Budapest. STill, a fantastic video, keep up the great work guys!!! :)

It's not France, Britain, Germany, etc, but adventurers from France, Italy, Germany, etc. At that time the Crusades were a meant for the younger (and so excluded from succession) son of the nobles to loot some booty and reclaim some land for themself.
In the Battle of Varna the only forces coming from western Europe were an handful of Papal and Teutonic Knights. Only Poland and Hungary sent something resembling a substantial force. The same year, at the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs, the French alone employed vs the Swiss more men than the combined Christian forces at Varna, and they were still fighting the English on another front.
also "turks". The ottoman army consistes of multiple nations of the ottoman empire. There were men from the balkans, anatolia, arabia and so on. This idea of yeah turks against all of europe is just dumb.

The Serbians saved us here. But this battle shows that even if you are strong as the Ottoman Empire, you still have chance to lose the battle if the tactics are not executed well. But this time the hit and run tactics from Central Asian Turks did work.
Serbians were also the last to stand their ground and continue fighting till the very end in the battle of Ankara despite a significant turkic elements of the ottoman army defected to the timur’s army. Even timur expressed his admiration for serbian gallantry in that battle. Indeed serbians were fantastic and honorable warriors and loyal allies back then

Makes me wonder how useful European tactics actually were. They get their ass kicked everytime they fight a non european army. Makes me think that all glory behind european heavy cavalry is nothing more dramatization which most likely made by teenagers who hyped about knights and heavy cavalry but without much knowledge and understanding about outcomes. I personally like the picture of french knight with lance but history show much different picture.
I know I'm answering this 8 month later, but this is a fairly uninformed comment. European tactics could be as effective as any other army, but it was not suited to fight experienced light horse infantry. While they might be "light",they trained their whole lives, and were incredibly effective in the suited situation. The Mongols conquered a good bit of Asia and Europe on the back of their light cavalry. Heavy European knight used to chase light infantry always end in the same way. Death. Cause they can't catch them. A wise commander knows that(Sigismund apparently) and uses his cavalry wisely.
Simply because in the medieval times (and even before), Europeans followed a very different doctrine in terms of armor and how to approach enemy, where they relied on very heavy cavalry and infantry with slow manoeuvrability. Whilst the Middle Easterns (Arabs and Muslims in general) followed a completely different doctrine, they relied on light cavalry and infantry with high manoeuvrability. Each doctrine has its own flaws, so only smart leaders could utilise what they had on hand to win battles. You can trace these things in all the battles fought between the east and the west, from Spain (when it was under Arab's control) to the Levant.
They won if the caught them but that depended a lot on terrain and there was always the risk that you we supposed to pursue them to spring an ambush. Competent leaders only allowed them short control charges. Like you see in the third crusade. But being aristocrats it took a very firm hand to control them.
Great video, great chanel realy loveing the content. Your video on The battle of Kosovo was realy something as whel. Keep it up greetings from Serbia!!!
At 3:35. That's not where the Danube enters the sea--there's no river there, only a mountain range. The Danube delta is about 200 miles to the north. The artist actually did draw the Danube delta, but then made up an imaginary shortcut? So weird to do such thorough research and then to skip the basic geography.
Not that suprising that European sources would massively inflate the Ottoman numbers. That way it wouldn't seem like they were embarassingly out-strategied and out-maneuvered, which they were. Bayezid seems like he went there to win a battle, while the French knights went there to live out a Crusader fantasy.
Good video but there is a small mistake. At 3:10 it is pictured that the Knights Hospitallers are located in Malta but they actually came to Malta in 1530 and was under aragonese control. At this point the Knights were located in Rhodes.
Kings and Generals and, though it does not affect the narrative for this topic, the Emirate of Granada should still appear in the south of the map of the Iberian peninsula. Great job as always though!
The early ottomans were really bad assess nothing seemed to be able to stop them, apart from that setback by the Timurids who were by the way also of central Asian Muslim descent.
@HT The term "turkic" in medieval era is the same as caucasian today. In other words, it was of absolutely no importance to the people of the time. The turkish nationalism that you speak of today was created by the secular officers of the Ottoman empire in the early 20th century.

Great video, hope this will blow up like that Kosovo battle. Consider adding numbers and showing them in your video's. Like how many soldiers were there and how many killed. Like BazBattles does at the end of the battle.
Thanks! Same here, hope it blows up. :-) Problem with adding numbers and stats like that are the sources. They are all over the place. For instance, early Western sources claim that Ottomans had 400,000 warriors. I mean, Ottomans probably had less population at that point. :-) But, we will think about that. :-)
Despot Stefan Lazarević had good relationship with King Sigismund of Hungary. King Sigismund even granted fortresses of Belgrade and Golubac to Despot Stefan, concluded alliance with him and Despot Stefan was even a high member of the Crusader Order of the Dragon formed by King Sigismund. The battle of Nicopolis was I think just a payback for King Sigismund's actions when Despot Stefan just ascended to the throne of Serbia, when King Sigismund attacked Serbia from the north.
no army sailed to Budapest before this battle, as Budapest did not exist till 1873, when it was created with the unification of Buda, Pest and Óbuda. The royal capitol of Hungary at this time was Buda
One of the most interesting things you learn in this series is that the different Christian kingdoms (Serbs, Wallachians, Moldavians, Hungarians etc.) seemed to have been spending more time fighting each other than being united against the Turks, or even siding with the Turks against another Christian kingdom. It goes to show that this idea of a united Christian Europe fighting against Islam is a myth invented by modern day ethnonationalists.
Inrerestingly they taught similar things to us( I am turkish) at school. We were told that the entire Christianity united against Turks although it is very obvious that this is all lies to gather people’s favoritism towards their management.
It’s mostly depending on who is the main threat to one of them , and who is the weak The Catholics fought a lot against Orthodoxs I guess since the division of the Roman Empire but also against the Muslims in Anatolia, Levant and the Iberian peninsula too on the western side when the crusades started and made treaties with the byzantines and Hungarians The orthodox byzantines in the other hand also fought a lot with the early Muslim Arabs and the Muslim Seljuk Turks And Russians were another tough enemy to the ottomans The ottomans too turned against the Armenians after they were living in under the ottoman rule for 4 centuries in WW1 after their revolts Sides can sometimes easily change, just like Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, fought together against Poland and fought each other about 4 years after

Well from the Wallachain perspective Mircea took the right decision: why loose his troops when himself and Sigismund told the french time and time again to atack together.
Yep, difficult to blame. I would probably have strangled Jean with my hands. :-)
And the answer was "You know nothing poor east europians." And this arrogance brought its fruit.
But you saw the video. Had they stayed and fight they would of saved the French knights and possibly would of won the battle or at least save the knights and allow for an ordered retreat.
So the French got arrogant and refused to listen to sage advice and recklessly went ahead and caused their own defeat? Sounds familiar.

This, exactly
As always, an awesome and very enjoyable video! Just a tiny correction: the capitol of Hungary of this time was Buda - Buda (on the left side of the Danube) and Pest (on the right side of the Danube) was two different city utnil 1873, when the two has been merged into Budapest. @Neutron Alchemist what about battle of varna??
Were those countries or just few independents against Ottomans?
In the Battle of Varna the only forces coming from western Europe were an handful of Papal and Teutonic Knights. Only Poland and Hungary sent something resembling a substantial force. The same year, at the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs, the French alone employed vs the Swiss more men than the combined Christian forces at Varna, and they were still fighting the English on another front.

And there is "Only knights can swing a sword". At least they decided this is bs after fucked up hundred times.
Michael Miller Yeah yeah, we heard that that crusaders from Kılıj Arslan, Danişment Gümüş Tegin Ghazi, Tuğtekin ( Dodequin ) etc.

Not that suprising that European sources would massively inflate the Ottoman numbers. That way it wouldn't seem like they were embarassingly out-strategied and out-maneuvered, which they were. Bayezid seems like he went there to win a battle, while the French knights went there to live out a Crusader fantasy.

King Sigismund even granted fortresses of Belgrade and Golubac to Despot Stefan, concluded alliance with him and Despot Stefan was even a high member of the Crusader Order of the Dragon formed by King Sigismund. Salam from Pakistani brothers to my Turks brothers
no army sailed to Budapest before this battle, as Budapest did not exist till 1873, when it was created with the unification of Buda, Pest and Óbuda. The royal capitol of Hungary at this time was Buda
True. But it was easier to say Budapest. Hope, that it is not a big deal.
@@capablemachine 30 years war*
80 Years War was the Dutch-Spanish War
Inrerestingly they taught similar things to us( I am turkish) at school. We were told that the entire Christianity united against Turks although it is very obvious that this is all lies to gather people’s favoritism towards their management.
It’s mostly depending on who is the main threat to one of them , and who is the weak
The Catholics fought a lot against Orthodoxs I guess since the division of the Roman Empire but also against the Muslims in Anatolia, Levant and the Iberian peninsula too on the western side when the crusades started and made treaties with the byzantines and Hungarians
The orthodox byzantines in the other hand also fought a lot with the early Muslim Arabs and the Muslim Seljuk Turks
And Russians were another tough enemy to the ottomans
The ottomans too turned against the Armenians after they were living in under the ottoman rule for 4 centuries in WW1 after their revolts
Sides can sometimes easily change, just like Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, fought together against Poland and fought each other about 4 years after
1618-1648 the 30 years war, christians fighting each other and destroying Europe
World War I & World War II.... Always christians against christians, now they try something new: christians vs. muslims
@@kubilaygitmisoglu2342 Lmao, no.
