- Multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Elise Trouw shares the genuine story of how her favorite drummer, Stewart Copeland of The Police, influenced her drumming style throughout the years.
“My parents had a turntable and the first vinyl I got was Zenyatta Mondatta by The Police. I remember listening to the music and thinking that the drummer was always taking you for a turn- doing something I didn’t expect. Stewart’s drumming has this ‘randomness’ that somehow makes sense. So much of what I do today is inspired by him.”

People often tend to overlook Copeland when talking about the greatest rock drummers. This man is a beast and one of the most musical drummers.

Stewart C is a giant in driving the music forward with the notion "pop"
Stewart Copeland was the only drummer amongst many drummers during the late 70's and early 80, that made me look up, listen and pay attention FAST but in a different way that I had done before. His eclectic and unique style and 'left of field' musical interpretation, blew my mind as a 14 year old. I wanted to play like him, look like him and copy his approach, which I did, until I eventually matured into my own style. Stewart Copeland is still my favourite musician and drummer and I will always be forever grateful for his inspiration and pig headded stubbornness to always go against conventional thinking, showcasing what others are simply not capable of hearing. If you're a drummer who has not listened to SC's portfolio, you need to sit down now and binge listen. I can assure you, it'll be an musical journey better than any text book will provide.

Stewart's drumming is a language all unto itself.
It’s funny hearing her talk about how she felt getting a “very cool” from Stewart when she sent him a message. It’s the same feeling I had when she responded that she really liked my remix of her song. Two of my most favorite musicians.

Stewart Copeland hits a drum with such meaning, passion and intensity...it's almost like the last time he'll ever do it.

Most recently in LA at his Police Deranged Orchestra gig. Incredible how his music is catchy. Quirky. Inspirational. He is a composer and has written operas and music scores. Plus he plays sooo many instruments. I hope you can catch him at his performance in 2022 in Nashville. He is doing his Deranged Orchestra gig. You will be super impressed. Love this man and all he does. I got to meet him a few times. Nicest down to earth cool guy.
I remember the first time I listened to a Police album. First thing that really caught my attention was Stewart’s unique drumming style in Regatta de Blanc. The song is quite simple harmonically, then there is Sting’s singing without words. But all the suspense comes from Stewart’s drumming. The variations even extend into the fade out, that slow progressive closing of the Hi-Hat, marvellous. 👏
Not forgetting how ridiculously talented and hard working Elise is as well….

I remember when I bought Peter Gabriel's So LP, and the second I heard the high-hat intro to Red Rain, I knew it was Stewart! There's a reason Copeland was featured on Netflix's Count Me In documentary...he's a brilliant player!
Stewart Copeland was by far this best thing about The Police i always felt , and from the genre and era they were around he was the outstanding drummer of the time
Naaahhhhh, they all were/are geniuses and virtuosos. Sure Stuart is above the rest (of the drummers) but so are Andy and Sting too. Perfect chemistry - no pun intended - to produce timeless music.

Read Stewart's autobio! A great book with a lot of insights. About "Does Everyone Stare", he wrote that song as a college homework, and when they were fresh out of tunes for Reggatta De Blanc, Stew dug it up.
That's how it went in the college:
_When she gets to my piece she plays it down like a breeze, and I’m basking in the beauty of hearing it for the first time as a listener, without having to limp through playing it myself. But I know that she will crush me with the inevitable technical errors._
_When she reaches the end the room is unusually silent. She turns to me and says:_
_“Stewart, you have parallel fifths in measures three, seven, and eleven, but more important, this is actual music. You have a voice.”_
Awesome. I really love the video at the end with the mashup song. I think a lot of people were really impressed with Stewart's drumming. Neil Peart and John Bonham to name a couple. Not bad company to be in liking Stewart Copeland. Message In A Bottle still does it for me for the drumming. The off beats and crashes. Absolutely right .....he puts them in very unexpected places but they sound so musical. Even his subtle playing in Tea In The Sahara blows me away. I shall now go check out your full video for the Beds Too Big Without You!!!! Thanks for a lovely perspective on Stewart. And oh yeah ..if you ever get to meet Stewart ask him when he is going to release his The Rythmatist movie. I still have the album I play when I want to dance around my basement and act goofy!!!!

Well now I understand why I gravitate toward Trouw's music. Copeland was the first drummer I felt inspired by, and I can sense a similarity between their drumming. I hope she gets invited to the sacred grove and we get to see the result.
If you read this Elise, you have a new fan, who was also inspired by Stewart, Sting and Andy to become a musician, (of sorts). I've been looking through your channel and I can see your talent is very strong. Although I don't own a kit, many of your other instruments have soul mates in my house. Best of luck for the future.

I used to play drums like this. 26 years of drums. It would just pour out of me and I wanted to hear how different beats matched up with rythyms. Not too far out, but not too safe.

Completely agree on the originality part. Not always doing the predictable thing. Probably why Sting worked with him so well. Sting recently commented in an interview, how if you don't catch his attention within the first few bars.. interest is lost..... All of that.. while keeping a perfect pulse.

Really love Copeland's drumming. However,I read an interview where he was asked what other good drummers were out there. His answer was,"after me,there is no one else". Arrogant!!

Back in the day people (who weren't drummers) thought Stewart was the weak link in the Police. I think that is fading away now after all these years. Just imagine what the Police would have sounded like if instead they had had a drummer who played a more traditional style, even if world class. Songs would sound wildly different. Stewart has been in my top 10 favorite drummers for a long time.
Stewart can do it all
The thing about Stewart Copeland is that he was always recognised and appreciated. It's just now today his significance is faiding out. It's natural though. He is part of drumming history always. It's the simple fact that those records aren't being sought out and purchased today. eventually Travis Barker will be the same. we all know and love Neil Peart but his legacy won't need defending when tomorrow's music industry market doesn't purchase those records. The biggest thing that killed the world's love for records and players as been the digitalisation of the medium. In anycase true art still survives somehow. If I'm doubt go to any jazz festival anywhere on the world. Stewart Copeland would surely love the world music artists of modern jazz festivals more than main stream success artists today no doubt!

So, one day I open an email from Vater and I see that this young woman named Elise Truow has a signature stick. For some reason, I get this strong urge to look her up on TH-cam. The first result is the song, "How To Get What You Want." I'm thinking to myself, "She's so young, maybe too young to have a strong Stewart Copeland influence in her playing, but it's there, it's definitely there!" And with this video, you've confirmed what I suspected but wasn't completely sure - you *definitely* have your own unique style (drumming, songwriting, mult-instrumentalist-ing) with just the right pinch of Stewart sprinkled in there! I love your work, you're quite the little genius! My only gripe, and it isn't specific to you, it's unfortunately a popular (hopefully, only for now) singing/enunciating style that's so pervasive in pop music (starting in early 2010s?) - the whispy, oh-so delicate "Cursive Singing" or "Indie Voice" (not, Indie *girl* Voice, as there's plenty of Indie *boy* Voice too) dripping with its syrupy dipthongs. Everybody, please, make it stop? Why can't people just sing without all of the affectations? It's so easily corrected..lol. I'm sorry, Elise, my intention isn't at all to pick on you - like I said earlier, it's just a linguistic/phonetic gripe of mine. You are such a rare talent with a truly unique and very musically accessible style. Please put more of your music out there, people need to know about you, you're a treasure! Keep up the excellent work!

Because The Police was so fused with Rock, Jazz, Pop and Reggae, that it really forced, not just Stewart but also the other members, to create this diverse sound and not such a basic 1,2,3... 1,2,3, basic beat

Wasn’t she born into a rich family, with a computer tech dad or something? Stewart was kind to reply to her, because she puts a lot of quality and aesthetics into her productions. But there are also people like me who shine creatively that others ignore after 7 seconds of watching, if I am not all dressed up in expensive clothes and perfect hair.
