    I like how you pointed out that Sega gave their consoles memorable names compared to Sony. So true and it really makes the point why gaming in the 80s/90s had so much more character.

    Even though I was very young, probably like 4 years old. I have the memory of opening the sega genesis model 1 on Christmas. It came with sonic the hedgehog and my parents also got me TMNT hyperstone heist. I’m very happy to say that I still have that exact system and games still today and play it in 2021.

    Favorite thing about Sega and games made specifically for their consoles was how fast paced they typically are, and they don't waste much time. Like Streets of Rage I feel like that genre is 90% slow and goes on for too long but not that series.
    Typically I play Sega for action and Nintndo for Rpgs, and both for platformers. The console libraries compliment each other really well.

    I think Sega was the first company to make gaming seem "cool" to the masses; when they made the Genesis. It had such an awesome design; that seemed more in line with audio equipment and looks slick to this day! Music in games really began to sound like real music as well (thanks to that Genesis sound board). While they were not the first to bring CD gaming to the market (that goes to NEC in Japan); they did make it more mainstream. Even online gaming was first done by Sega with the Dreamcast. I always remember Sega as the first bring Arcade quality gaming home with the Genesis and moving up; while also providing exclusive home only content; that felt like it could have been at the Arcades.

    On the plus side, the various genesis/megadrive collections now are on all platforms and represent one of the best entry points to the retro gaming hobby.
    They've also had the courage to give smaller developers their notable IP's (e.g., sonic mania, streets of rage 4) which led to great modern retro inspired games.

    • @dinohermann1887
      @dinohermann1887 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It all started with the 32x vs. Saturn feud. Sega of America wanted to continue the highly successful Genesis console with an add-on known as the 32x, while Sega of Japan wanted to make a whole new console, the Saturn, instead. At the end Sega of America was forced to discontinue the Genesis and replace it with the Saturn!

    • @SgtSega
      @SgtSega 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dinohermann1887 The 32x was to keep the Genesis going but it didn't add much. The Genesis games sold just fine without 32x versions of them. With how high the price of the 32x was added to the price of the Saturn and the rushed launch to compete with the Playstation's cheaper launch price thus ticking off stores that signed on for Sega after Kalinske did all that hard work getting the Genesis in their stores so the stores ended up refusing to sell them and you have the perfect storm for how Sega ended up in such a state in the Dreamcast era that forced them to throw in the towel.

    I had a friend up the street from me back in the 80s who had a Master System. I had an NES so going over each other's homes we got to experience both systems. We'd be at my place taking turns, switching off each level, playing NES Double Dragon then playing Co-OP Double Dragon on The Master system at his place.
    I didn't (and still don't) own a Super Nintendo (experienced it with friend's ones). Funny enough I wanted a Turbografx 16. My cousin got one before the Genesis came out and I was obsessed with it. My parents got me a Genesis for Christmas as they couldn't find a place that sold a TG-16. For the longest time it was my favorite system ever (until a couple of years ago when I finally got a Sega Saturn). Sega played a huge roll in my childhood and just naturally appealed to me more. And when I go back to retro gaming it's almost always something Sega.
    Though I'd have to add it's NOT just video games. Movies have gone through the same thing. There's the obvious like Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick, but you have other directors who had their own style and attitude: Richard Donner, John Carpenter, Sam Raimi. Now 99 percent of movies today I couldn't tell you by watching it who made it because it's all the same with no personality to tell it apart from the others.

    Awesome vid, Sega content is always a win and yeah I miss the old Sega vs Nintendo days. The SMS was solid, but criminally slept on imo. The Genesis was a revolution coming from the 8-bit years and has argurably the greatest library if any if Sega's consoles . The Saturn was a powerhouse that pushed the type of 2D games I always wanted to play, fast, bug, colorful, and generally near arcade perfect. The Dreamcast was another leap forward and it seemed like everything would finally click for Sega. Well we all know how that story needed, but I think the industry is worse off w/o Sega out to take chances and try different things. I'm just grateful I was able to enjoy the company at its prime and can continue to do so through my still growing Sega collection 😁
    ...keep up the Sega content man 😁and congrats on hitting 5k subscribers!

    Another thing that made them different, and even better in this sense was alot of Nintendo games was cropped, or zoomed in on the action which actually put you at a disadvantage in high action games. In the 8 bit days, Sega was the arcade leader. In the 16 bit days, they were the system with 'tude. Unfortunately, with the Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, and Dreamcast all coming out within a few years, they became the company that seemed to have lost focus. I think what is was though was the Sega CD was sort of niche, the 32X was just the Saturn's poor little brother, the Saturn was difficult to program for compared to the PlayStation, and the Dreamcast quickly got overshadowed by the PS2 announcement (plus, the DC lacked support from EA).

In a tragic turn, perhaps the reason the Saturn and Dreamcast were so good was because Sega was doing bad financially. • @rbvgp
    @rbvgp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sega formed my choice in consoles, from the start. Growing up with arcades, 4 games stood out to me. Shinobi, Afterburner, Altered Beast, and Golden Axe. Each game had something the kept me coming back, even after I'd mastered each game. Knowing sega was behind these games, I sunk some birthday money into a Master System, even though I had no idea what I was getting into. It was a competent system, though weak in the sound department. Getting the arcade ports, though, made it worthwhile. The genesis era really put the emphasis on arcade conversion, and my Capcom favorites of Strider and Forgotten Worlds made it in, in incredible likeness. Probably one of the best things about Sega, to me, was the great in-house arcade teams and the third party talent they attracted. (That and developing some of the greatest gamepads ever created...)
    After that, it's hard to say, but it was all about the experience. SegaCD was awesome. I had a difficult time going back to cartridge games. I feel like... that even forewarned me about the fate of the 32x. When Saturn was on the horizon, SegaCD convinced me that future gaming would need to be on the CD storage medium. That said, I felt lukewarm about the Saturn. It had some fantastic games. I even went so far as to buy imports. But, the struggle Saturn was was having was obvious. Developers had trouble with the transition to 3d games and the complexity of the hardware. The Dreamcast was the last system I was explicitly excited for, but we know how that turned out.
    I definitely loved 90's Sega. Post 2K changed a lot in the company. The direction seemed to go into a lot of 3rd person ARPG's and some games lost thier unique flavor, I feel. Sega is like that high school friend you really got along with, but eventually everyone had to change thier lifestyle to figure out a way to make it in the world. Still a good company, but definitely different.
    That said, I've really been enjoying the Yakuza series on PC.

    Awesome video. I totally agree on (almost) everything. For context, I am one of those weirdos who asked Santa for a Master System when every other kid was begging for an NES. My main gripe with the whole SEGA leaving consoles debate is when people suggest that SEGA's business mistakes were what cut their time short. While yes, this is almost certainly true, the part that everyone leaves out is that even had they not made the 32X and even if they had not botched the Saturn, and even if the Dreamcast had lasted a couple years longer, SEGA was still totally doomed as a console maker the second that Microsoft decided that they wanted in the race. One way or another Microsoft would have brute forced SEGA out of the market, no matter what. What the Mac/PC/Linux and IOS/Android/Windows Phone and Genesis/SNES/TG-16 dynamics have taught us is that when it comes to consumer technology that has a proprietary "ecosystem" (in this case it's the game library/peripherals)...there is only ever enough room for two juggernauts slugging it out and one oddball outsider yapping away to the side. When MS decided to be the opposing corporate juggernaut to Sony, Nintendo and SEGA both became the yapping oddballs, and since only one oddball ecosystem could survive on store shelves, it of course had to be Nintendo's. So, while it is fun to think about how good the Dreamcast might have been had SEGA not been in such a dire financial situation, I don't spend too much time wondering about what the Dreamcast follow-up console might have been because in my opinion, in all likelihood, there could never have been a SEGA console after say 2003...

    Something as unique as SEGA will probably never be replicated anymore. Even SEGA's modern games are at best too Nintendo-y and at worst just bad. The closest things we have to SEGA now are indie devs, but it still just isn't the same.

    Cool video- if you look at sega ’s history during the 90s, they did amazing work considering how little they leaned on third-party support. Nintendo really had a death grip on third-party licenses and it’s their strategy of being arcade heavy w original content was what kept them afloat. Aside from getting licenses sooner, I think if The arcade would’ve stayed strong as a venue, we might’ve continued to see Sega flourish.

    Sega wasn't on my radar until the second generation Genesis came out - I was 9 at the time so finally starting to develop my own tastes. Looking back I think Sega could have been a powerhouse if they had landed in the US first with the Master System and didn't try to squeeze so much out of the Genesis with the CD and 32X. I also think they would have been around if Nintendo didn't break up with Sony. Sony disrupting the market at the time was a death knell for Sega because now there were TWO "grown up" consoles

    It's a bit funny that some of the biggest complaints in modern gaming (we retro game enthusiasts can still play/enjoy/keep up with current stuff, right?) are things like "lack of creativity/innovation" or just this general fiscal bottomline that companies have and which, must be said, has always been a part of gaming, but is something we all seem to have become much more aware of, perhaps due to the successful growth of the medium and the proliferation of information via the web. Ironic then that past failures (like later SEGA console sales) may have been a factor in pushing modern publishers to seek out tried and true IPs and mechanics, and focusing on things like graphics and QoL updates that appeal to...well, not necessarily a "casual" audience, but certainly a wider audience. A lot of us make common jokes such as Ubisoft being "the best deal in gaming" because once you've played one you've essentially "played them all." 40 games for the price of one lol. And I see a lot of people who intentionally try to support any game that comes out and tries something new, which is admirable, but still sad that we're at the point where we have to encourage anything different, just because so much feels rehashed to a lot of us, and we know that, with any further business failings attached to "creative" endeavors, we may end up getting even less of these games.
    Unfair to blame SEGA for that, but with the huge production values of some modern games, and the presence of investors, hard to say they didn't become somewhat of a blueprint of what not to do to turn a profit.
    But that's not the SEGA I remember. Sonic, Axel, Jim, Eric Lecarde... thats what I remember most

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said. Playing it safe becomes more and more of an attractive option for companies as the industry grows larger. I'd argue that Microsoft and Sony have played things extremely safe too. Nintendo still takes risks in some ways, and has been lucky enough to hit it really big on some.. so that they have plenty of cash to survive some of their flops like the Wii U.

    • @huegrizzy676
      @huegrizzy676 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroBirdGaming Good point about Nintendo. They do mix things up still, outside of the status quo, and coincidentally some of their marketing efforts (like the Wii U in particular) have just been complete headscratchers. Had Sony and Microsoft not been rivals to each other, maybe things might have been more like the dark days of SEGA at Nintendo. Or maybe having lost SEGA, we're all a bit more fond of Nintendo and don't wanna see them go the same way. All very interesting timelines lol.
      Even now I love a lot Nintendo titles and innovations, and then as I'm trying to use a certain controller or access a certain option in the settings (again thinking primarily of the Wii U) or just some seemingly intuitive thing you would expect to be able to do, I run into wierd quirks that could probably have benefited from more thoughtful design. I mean some of the UIs, amirite? That being said, the Switch swerved a great many of the PR bungles of the Wii U, and hit a sweet spot for all us handheld lovers, and if Nintendo handheld sales are anything to go by, they should be alright haha

    Since I was 9, I was a huge Sega fanboy, or so I thought. Turns out, it was just the Genesis. But I still am a huge Genesis fan, now owning models 1(stinker) and 2, Sega CD model 2, AtGames Ultimate Portable Game Player 2017 (Genesis on a chip handheld), as well as AtGames Genesis Flashback HD 2018. Say what you will about AtGames, I'm happy but I digress
    During the 16 bit era, for me anyways, Sega's most significant moment was being the company that rocked Nintendo off it pedestal. Having a steady amount of quality games, being able to go toe to toe with the champ. That in its self is worth something.
    Today we have Sony and Microsoft fighting for top spot, buy let's be honest, Nintendo's outdoes the others in one way, quality of games. Sony and Microsoft can, but typically just don't. Lazy I think

    I grew up with SNES, so naturally I had to hate the Mega Drive, because those were the rules back in the day. However, in 1998 I bought a PS1 and, a few months later, traded it with a friend who gave me instead his old Master System plus several games. That decision marked the beginning of my career as a retrogamer and my disgust for anything Sony and Microsoft, which I still don't recognize as true gaming companies. As you said, the boring names of their consoles are a sign of a lack of love and creativity. 80s and 90s Nintendo and Sega consoles are all I need for the rest of my life.

I was too young to remember sega in their prime but one of my earliest gaming memories was playing the og sonic the hedgehog on my cousin’s genesis in the mid 90s. Didn’t really know anything about games then but I knew I liked Sonic games lol. I had a couple nintendo consoles after that but the first console I ever bought with money I saved up from weekly allowances was a Dreamcast when i was 8 or 9 years old and I still play it to this day. I was devastated when I found out Sega had discontinued it. Ever since then I’ve always fantasized about the day Sega would rise from the ashes… of course it seems unlikely now. My sister and I loved the X-Men arcade game, and when I spotted the X-Men game on Genesis, I (foolishly) thought it was an arcade port. I managed to convince my parents to get us a Genesis so my sister and I could play that game. I thought the game was great. My sister hated it (but she got RBI '93, so she had something to occupy her time as well). We got a few more Sega games, but we, sadly, went back to Nintendo products as the mainstay.
