      The TIE fighter was created as a cheap “disposable fighter”, while the Chiss had a different military mentality- so a Chiss Claw craft may look like a TIE, but it could be made from completely different components and materials.

      Played around with the idea, it’s interesting because the umbaran star fighter we see used a similarly shaped pod for the cockpit, so replace the ray shielded pod with a tie fighter pod.
      Head canon for me was that it could act as a decent interceptor due to its high maneuverability as stated in the Umbaran star fighter wookiepiedia entry.

    Those smaller, secondary "cannons" you've identified on the Clawcraft's wings, if you're talking about what i think you're talking about, are actually maneuvering thrusters, according to the New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels. Or at least the edition I have a copy of. One of the images you showed is even from the exact same source.

    • @the7observer
      @the7observer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      ah makes sense, it was weird the "cannons" were mounted tilted and not in line with the bigger guns.
      They being thrusters is actually better as they would allow the spacecraft to perform some crazy manuveurs

    • @rikuurufu5534
      @rikuurufu5534 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      That's the point exactly. The Clawcraft is actually quite large and heavy for a TIE, and those thrusters are there to compensate for that, making it extremely maneuverable for a craft of its mass. @@the7observer

    I’ve always wondered about Chiss Fighters. Like, in the Ascendancy Trilogy - we don’t see ANY fighters. At all. There are gunboats and shuttles, but no one out in the Chaos uses fighters.
    Which is fascinating to me - the Clawcraft that Mara and Luke steal is shuttle sized, and I think it’s neat to me that the Chiss are clearly just now getting used to the concept

    • @Obiwan7100

      Zahn is very consistent about that in a cool way. The Chiss do use fighters in Outbound Flight and Survivor's quest, but they are noted to be quite large. They're considered heavy fighters by Luke and Mara and their size is supposed to be somewhere between 13 and 25 meters long.

      Given how difficult and dangerous it is to travel around in the Unknown Regions, my best guess is that the Chiss chose to make whatever Starfighters they had as big and as self-suficiant as they were fast and durable. Something as small as a normal TIE Fighter or X-Wing would probably have an extremely difficult time dealing with the dangers of the Unknown Regions in the event such fighters get cut-off from the larger Starships they're attached to.

    Great video! IIRC, the "weapons" in the middle of each wing are actually maneuvering thrusters. These are one of the reasons the Clawcraft was more maneuverable than even the TIEs. The missile launchers are in the chin.
    Also, IIRC, the Chiss would outfit a couple of Clawcraft with nav computers for extended missions. The other Clawcraft would slave their navigation to them for hyperspace jumps.

      Yeah the whole subplot of Zsinj setting up a hidden parallel economy inside the New Republic and non-allied Imperial space to produce his own distributed military industrial complex making unique variants of Imperial weapons to fit his own evolving doctrine was pretty cool concept to me.
      It was an interesting take on how to show how big of a threat Zsinj was in story, without resorting to superweapons or the dark side.
      It made him a genius on par with Thrawn, but in a different way.
      While Thrawn had strategy and tactics, Zsinj was purely a logistics mastermind.
      Where Thrawn had to take dangerous risks and shortcuts to build his forces( the Katana fleet, clones, C'baoth and the cloaking tech) ,
      Zsinj went about ensuring he didn't need any of that, and was able to provide and supply his forces without worrying about being tied to preexisting infrastructure.
      I mean he was still an Imperial warlord so he had tons of wunderwaffen project's and personal 'elite' vanity units, but those seemed to be supplements to possibly enhance his power, and he didn't rely on them as central to his power projection.

More intimidating than practical, Chiss seem to have adopted the Empire's doctrine of terror over practicality.

    • @helghast1149
      @helghast1149 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      OP stated that they weren't able to roll the INT's out before the end of the Civil War. If we're going on Legends material that's false as they were the mainstay Imperial naval fighter (technically interceptor but with shields it was used more in a fighter role) prior to the signing of the Pellaeon-Gavrisom Treaty. I never debated that the Empire didn't field them en masse prior to Endor. They certainly ramped up production prior to Endor but training pilots on new spacecraft takes time so you can imagine that lower enlisted would have been granted the Fighters while more senior enlisted would have flown the Interceptor's and other craft. Something that was left out about the manouvering and hyperdrive capabilities of the Clawcraft is that their hyperdrives were so fine-tuned that, since they were based on Chiss technology that isn't point to point, they could even execute micro-jumps to get BEHIND their pursuers in combat. Since such tactics however tended to overload the hyperdrive core, it was built in in a way that the pilot could eject it and not get blown up along with it.

Full fire linked canon barrage at a high speed approach and pass, then switch the secondary canons to the rear to continue firing. Just three of these flying in a trinity/clover pattern could wear down a decent sized ship with just a near constant barrage of light/medium fire. On the topic of Chiss ships, what we do know is that they are built to operate as self-sufficiently as possible and are very versatilely equipped with an array of weaponry. While they were somewhat nerfed in the new canon - which I'll never understand the reason for - in return they've also gotten some satisfyingly Warhammer 40K-esque traits. Such as the fact that they are piloted through hyperspace in real-time by Force-sensitive individuals. In combat they seem to rely more on agility and sophisticated tactics rather than direct brute force, even though a heavy cruiser like Thrawn's Springhawk is already something that, according to the one and only Darth Vader, could tango with a star destroyer one-on-one. And since the 4 man o' war classes they have are even bigger and more powerful, the Ascendancy has a formidable naval force even by wider galactic standards.

Ajunta Pall alludes quite heavily to the treasure of the Ancient Sith from his era to be the Star Forge, but I have yet to see this referenced anywhere else. I don't believe anyone other than the Rakatta, Revan, and Malak had anything to do with the Star Forge, or even had any knowledge whatsoever about its existence, and yet Pall seems to state otherwise and the Star Map is located within Naga Sadow's tomb, which couldn't have been a coincidence.
    Continuity error? Plot thread left unresolved? #askeck

    Ever play Star Wars Force Commander? I loved how that game had actual carrier ships to deliver walkers and whatnot to the ground from an orbiting Star Destroyer - even better, those carriers were vulnerable to attack too. Dunno if there's a video in there but that game was pretty cool and most haven't heard of it.

    With _The Clone Wars_ and _Ahsoka_ having re-introduced the Night Sisters of Dathomir it'd be most excellent to get some lore on Tenel'Ka from _Legends_ and her parents, a Dathomiran witch and a Hapan prince. There is a novel I never completed [reading] wherein Han Solo and Leia interact with said prince and his empire.

    5:12: "Does that make sense in space? No, but that's just how _Star Wars_ is."
    It's interesting how sometimes people admit that, and other times, people don't. Mainly depending on whether they like they rest of the work that the bad physics is featured in.
    A shame we never got to see a clawcraft of purely Chiss design. Nor a detailed description of Chiss armor, although there is a mention of some "fractal-pattern armor".

    Not sure if you could get enough material for a full video, but if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, there's a scene in Clone Wars season 6(?) where we see Anakin holding a model of a jedi starfighter. It has the basic fusalage of the Delta 7, but it's got strike foils and a pronged nose like the Eta 2. I think the ship was based off of some concept art, wonder if there is any more lore for it. Though that may be something for EC Henry to cook up lol
