A depressing reminder for Cowboy fans that the team was aging without new talent to fill the roster. A changing of the guard game. Like the Minnesota Vikings, circa 1978, running on fumes. It is testimony to Landry's greatness as a coach that he could squeeze a 9-7 season out of his veterans, especially fighting for a playoff bid on the final MNF game of the season before being eliminated by Dan Marino. The following year, he pulled one last rabbit out of his fedora sweeping the Giants and winning a division title before laying an egg in the playoffs against the Rams.
The end of the Cowboys dynasty right here! A new version arrived about nine years later. I can't tell you how this game was the topic of conversation at my school the next day.
Rome has fallen!! The barbarians have penetrated the walls. Sadly I was a Roman fan (LOL!) This loss meant far more than the OT losses in 1980 and 1981, the only Giant wins since 1974. This game wasn't 38-35 or 13-10 going down to a FG. It was emphatic, even more so when NY doubled down and beat Dallas easily in the rematch, 19-7, the first time I had ever seen the Cowboys get swept, being too young to remember the Cardinal thrashing on MNF in 1970. It felt like a constitutional law that no one could sweep a Landry coached team. Even in the 8-6 nightmare of 1974, Dallas reversed losses to all four divisional opponents, including the playoff bound Skins and Cards. Death, taxes and the Cowboys always managing a split seemed certainies, like Maryland losing to Penn State, Army getting sunk by Navy, the Bills getting stomped by Miami since the Paleozoic Period, the Capitals losing to the Islanders, my Ottawa Rough Riders defecating in their own beds against the Alouettes in the playoffs, etc.
Pls post the early 1980 something (1-3) Dallas v. Washington game where Dallas came back to win 31-30. In that game, Tony Hill caught two key touchdown passes. Tony Dorsett also had a long run and was caught from behind by Darell Green. Thanks!
