I can't tell you how awesome it is that these broadcasts are preserved here and not lost to history. I was born in 84 so I didn't get to experience this era of football but I love the old style of football and broadcasting so much. What a blessing to be able to enjoy this history.

I was at the playoff game at the Meadowlands in Jan 1987. When Jim Burt sacked Montana. The hit was so hard it sounded like a cannon. LT picked off the pass and took it all the way for a touchdown. Bavaro caught a touchdown pass from Phil Simms. Carl Banks had one the best runs in the history of the game. Dare I posit that he was even better than hall of famer Harry Carson and the NFL MVP all-world LT during that stretch of games. He utterly dominated tightends. They could not get off the line of scrimmage let alone block him. How did he only make one pro bowl? There was another excellent linebacker named Chip Banks in the AFC. He played for Cleveland and then the Colts. There is a new book by Gerry Myers about the 86' club. Many are struggling today. Some did very well. Parcells is estimated to have lent about 4 million dollars to his ex-players. He most likely was never paid back. But he is fine with it according to the book. He said he asked so much of his players and they were like sons to him.

It's so great to be able to watch these again and get taken back to 86. I'm a Vikings fan, but L.T. and this Giants team were a blast to watch. I was at the game that year when the Vikings blew a coverage on a 4th and 17 to give the Giants a first down and an eventual game winning boot.

as much as i love the product on the field now for the NFL, I can't help but feel a certain love for the game of the 80s. It was when passing first truly took off, with guys like Fouts, Marino, Elway, Montana and Kelly. But you still had great, productive running backs like Dickerson, Roger Craig, Walter Payton and others. The balance between the run and the pass, I feel, was at it's peak in the 80s. In terms of yardage you could argue the 60s were more balanced, but in terms of plays called in the 80s, it's something like 50.6 percent of all plays being passing plays and 49.3 percent of all plays being running plays, which is extremely close. Not to mention the differences in offenses as well, you had teams like the Bears who were contempt to run the ball heavily throughout the decade, while teams like the 49ers found a perfect balance between run and pass, and teams like the 1984 Dolphins favored the pass heavily.

    • @zoffwolfgung2933

Yes and it's different to see the quarterback line up behind the center and drop back several steps to pass...Now everything is in the shot gun formation

BTW, thanks for the upload. This was back when whenever both the 49ers and Raiders happened to be on either NBC or CBS, we'd get the 49ers game, so in Fresno where I'm from, I vividly remember being disappointed to see the Saints/49ers on CBS after watching Denver smoke the Eagles on NBC. The stuff you remember from your childhood lol.

I don't think there's ever been another team in history that started their season playing both Super Bowl participants and a conference championship game participant in the first three weeks like the Raiders did in 1986. Just a brutal start to the year. After this, they'd win 8 of 9 games, including a win over the 4th and final conference championship game participant, Cleveland.

I was scanning to see if anyone else was gonna make this comment. Crazy here in 1986 he's in his 2nd year and almost 2 decades later he was still an active player as he played so long cause he was regarded as a long snapping specialist but boy did his career ever end badly and the little he played for the Giants will always be badly remembered from that infamous 2003 playoff game against SF.

OJ Anderson and Hoss lost in this season. Both would be big pieces in 1990 SP, who would have thought.

Simms naked bootleg in 4th Q snuffed out by Greg Townsend. In SB Simms runs same play against Broncos for a huge gain.

He was replaced by Raul Allegre I believe. It may have been right after this game. I forgot that they had multiple kickers that year until just a few minutes ago.

I never realized how terrible Phil Simms was as a quarterback. He had a good defense but that offense was terrible. If the offense would have been better LT would have had more rings.

I disagree. Phil was / is under-rated. The 86 Giants had many injuries in the skill position players, and Simms was playing with a sub-par, inconsistent receiver corps. Even at their best, the 80s Giants weren't known for having the best skill-position players (like Rice, Monk, etc.). And Phil had what Parcells would call "intangibles"--mental & physical toughness, resiliency, self-belief.

You obviously have no clue what you're talking about when it comes to Phil Simms. Guy was a good quarterback, and had a very solid career. He was a Super Bowl MVP, and later a Pro Bowl MVP at the end of his last season in the league at age 38.

Simms still holds the record for the highest pass completion percentage in the history of the Super Bowl.

Giants had a horrible receiving core. As you see the main offensive weapons where Tight end and running back. That was out of necessity. Simms worked with what he had as did the coaches. Which is why that year is all the sweeter looking back.

That LT Superman Tackle sent Junkin to the showers. Ole Joe Cooper went on to become a Pro Bowl Barrister. After week 3, you'd thought the NY Jets would win the Super Bowl.
