The Lance was the only weapon imo that really worked with the Clutch Claw. It's a weapon with precision pokes so having the ability to stylishly counter an attack and make a hitzone weaker really incentivizes poking with precission.
Add hammer and SnS to that. These three really had THIS one thing that mad clutch claw working. IG also had SnS trick but with all aerial moves it was ridiculously hard to pull off flying tenderize Everything else just wasn't really working. But hey! GS and CB had some really nasty slinger shot copabilities in coop
I tried lance on the arena and fell in love with it. Coming from MHFU and I never tried lance so I was very surprised on how mobile, aggressive and safe it is. I like guard dash more since it has more mobility and for the leaping thrust
Lance is amazing. Probably the most unique weapon out of all of them in how it plays and when you get good with it you literally just stay in the monsters face and only a couple of attacks interrupt your flow. But I much prefer guard dash becuase of the mobility, distance covered and it looks cooler, it's basically the lances alternative to dodging for me.
Nice choice of intro music, good editing and an excellent summary of why lance feels like such a powerhouse in SB. Insta-Guard and Anchor Rage are amazing moves and do so much for the lance's toolkit, plus they feel very fitting for a weapon that just shrugs off attacks like they're nothing. Sadly enough lance in SB didn't just click for me yet, perhaps it's because I didn't use shield tackle. I can totally imagine that evade lance is tons of fun though like you mentioned. I was tinkering with SnS in that regard and the instant gratification you get from Adrenaline Rush and Status Trigger popping is just so good.
Ok. You sold me. I'll give it a shot. I feel the same way you do about IG. It feels like you're doing a crazy aerobatic dance with the monster. And it can pull off some crazy damage numbers. It feels like nothing I've ever played in any other game before. I'm definitely obsessed

not sure if you know but there is the sheathing retreat switch skill that yeets you out like an ejector seat, has a. ton of s and auto sheaths your weapon much faster than the regular sheath. also great video and glad you're enjoying the lance my man. keep up the good work
The funniest use for sheathing retreat is launching towards the monster and hitting guard on their face to deal impact damage and then chaining immediately into a shield charge
I actually prefer the insta-guard than the anchor rage. I actually hit something's with insta-guard. The latter always misses. Sure I don't get mounting dmg but at least I hit something

I am a PC player and when I started MHW (I was already late to the party since I started after the release of Iceborne) I went the typical beginner route. Sword & Shield. Then into LBG. But then....I saw ur video. The master class race. The one and only holy grail of hunting. The allmighty doot. I switched and it was my true love I would even cheat my wife on. Such a majestic piece of art. The battle dance gave me the thrills of my life. Never before was I so complete and happy with my life decisions. It was the deepest connection between a human being and a doot. I started rise 4 days ago. Wanted to wait for sunbreak and some updates on PC. I instantly took on the doot again and though the dance was kinda crippled it just keeps filling my lungs with fresh air, it keeps boiling my blood, it gives me all sensations when smashing the CRAP out of a monsters head...truly passion.... ....and now. I am sitting here. Watching this. U using the lance. Fk. I guess its time to have an affair. xD Fk u man. xD Much love
I friggin' love playing lance. I gave it a shot after hours of Long Sword and Charge Blade in World, and even though I still enjoy those weapons, I always come back to lance. Sunbreak has really given the weapon some awesome tools to work with.
Lance is so fun in SB. I enjoyed it in base Rose but the small tweaks it got in SB really change how much fun it is even though the changes are small. Awesome vid my man!
I love lance, LS and SA main before on World and Rise Switch. Tried out Lance on ICE modded world before PC Rise came out and then mained Lance all through PC Rise and Sunbreak.
Yeah i enjoyed using shield tackle and pokes for a while but i happened to watch Vycery's seething bazel speedrun and uh.. doing guard dashes to leaping thrusts over and over is my go to now when the monster is down, never thought of that combo before seeing it but it is so fun to use.
I pretty much started maining Lance in Sunbreak almost by accident (played Lance first in GU, didn't know Insta-Block was a thing in base Rise), the Shield Tackle and Shield Charge made me a fan :D
I love lance in sunbreak. Absolute fun to play. I like both guard tackle and shield bash, as they both have very different pros and cons. I am so glad they fixed everything wrong with rise lance in sunbreak, making this easily one of the most fun lance kit in monster hunter.
I'd really have to shout out spiral lance here. yes it does feel so out of place at first but it has 3 major points: 1. the low cool down and the speed makes it an amazing mobility tool, monsters can't really get too far from you 2. the damage on the two possible thrusts (can do only one if you want) is pretty good! not only that, after the second thrust you can press a normal attack to do a surprisingly powerful quick thrust. OR you can smack behind you for the same damage if you overshoot. all in all 3 strong hits. 3. the startup is actually a mini insta-block! not only that, it gives you a hefty damage boost. and that damage boost? only one possible level that is simply stronger than anchor rage's boost. lasts less and harder to pull off but that's the fun of it. with some guard skills slotted in, it can reliably block and counter almost anything. I absolutely love rise Lance, and everything it has (except twin vine, fuck that) but I hope I made a good case for this amazing silkbind.
I was the one of the player that highly defend shield tackle when other were bashing it because I knew what it can do, continuously chain attack. In previous version, you need to do hop/cancel thrust to chain your attack and with shield tackle it help you chain attack while help with repositioning for better angle. I really love it but I had ditch it because they really buff leaping thrust damage. The movement and style of playing combining attacking and defence by using shield dash forward to attack and backward to defence really capture me. I feel a lot more calculative and I didn't mashing my input again.
I played Lance in MH tri and went to Gunlance in World. First build for Rise was Bow, just so I could try it, but my second character I went to Lance. I like the Lance, but for me, its hard to get that instant block down since trying to figure out when a monster is bluff attacking or actually attacking was getting to me. Played thru the base game and haven't really touched Sunbreak, but will see.
I tried it once in an arena quest and was shocked with how fun it felt just on my first ever go. Definitely going to main it in a future game (I pick one and only one new weapon to try per game).
@@Carsu12 There is a reason to limit myself! By sticking to one weapon for an entire game, I get to truly master that weapon. Not only that though, choosing a different weapon for each game also ensures that each Monster Hunter game I play is even more unique an experience. I don't really even need more reason to play the game either. I've put 250+ hours into Rise just with Longsword so far, and I'm not even done with the game yet. I put 375 hours into World just using Insect Glaive. I had 300 or so hours in MHGU when we finished too. That's plenty for me.
Sunbreak endgames with investigation that combine augment really gave me incentives to try other weapon. I start with lance then try hbg, sns, sa, lbg and now bow. Since you got plenty of material for investigation plus the large variety of meta weapons, I craft most of it and try to get good at it.
One thing about Lance you didn't touch on but is very useful is sheathing retreat. So many carts as a lance player comes from its slow sheath time, so the ability to quickly escape and sheath a weapon with i-frames is a very nice tool. If only twinvine didn't blow mondo chunks...
Used Lance a lot in FU, Tri/P3rd/3U and base World. Recently the hype around Sunbreak Lance is making me want to pick it back up. It really does look like the culmination of all past games. It's time.
6:34 you should look into sheathing retreat, a 1 cost silkbind move that is insanely quick, has s at the beginning, and launches you quite a ways away to get out of danger, and because of how items interactions work where you can use many of them in the air, it has a comparable sheathe time to some of the fastest weapons if you use this move, lance stronk
lance main here i started playing lance just like this, with shoulder tackle and anchor rage, it was fun and all but i would get hit a lot to follow up attacks after anchor rage then i switched to shield tackle + skyward thrust, it was really great as well, skyward thrust deals lots of damage to most of the monsters then after watching some speedruns i gave hop lance a chance (guard dash + stab) and boy is it fantastic. sure i don't get the KO's but i am dealing damage even more aggressively now, guard dashing through attacks is very satisfying. now i almost never get hit, if i do (thanks to instablock which does not nullify the damage from special beams etc ) i use sheathing retreat and heal. you can also chain sheating retreat to shield dash, which is really useful
Ever since MHW, lance has been one of my favourite weapons to play. Gunna be honest, been playing since PSP on MHFreedom, back then it was too clunky (or at least too complex for my wee-little mind to understand) but I think the modernised version from MHW onwards (especially on Iceborne) has taken the lance to new heights. The counter(claw)-lance playstyle was so good and really good fun to play
Im knew to the Monster Hunter franchise. When I started Rise i instantly went for the flashy weapons such as CB and SA. I settled with Hammer all through up until Sunbreak TU1. I started getting bored of Sunbreak so tried other weapons. Great Sword was fun but was hard to nail down the TCS! Tried Gun Lance and that was ok .....But then Lance....WOW! The last blade master weapon i tried and man is it fun. Lance in Sunbreak can KO, Cut Tails, Break parts, and Tank almost any attack with ease! And with the write build it deals crazy damage! I feel like a beast now!
If you shield tackle and the press the heavy attack, u'll jump and poke. It'll hit like 4 times. Didnt see u do that move during the video. Nevermind. U had a good reason. Great video
Lance in sunbreak feels great, you have multiple layers of options to always keep the offensive, from instablock (that I LOVE to spam) to shield dashes, to anchor rage, to simple counters, if you play well (and have a good sharpness managment in your build) you just never have to sheathe or withdraw. People saying that lance is a defensive weapon have it all wrong and sunbreak shows it better than any game. Btw, you deal fairly good damage with lance, nothing to be jealous of other weapons, I run a damage meter on sunbreak and I always do at least 25% of the damage on a four man hunt.
I started with World, tried Lance and didn't liked it. Iceborne came and I tried Lance again. Still didn't liked it until I picked up what was going on with Guard Counters. I don't play Rise but God damn it, Lance is most loved weapon. Dashes, Guard Dashes and countering everything is just special. Lance is not a weapon, it's a live style.

There's probably no weapon more interactive with the monster than Lance. Coming from a traditional lance background, I kinda still likes guard dash more tho. I like that feeling of free relocating to headlock a monster to death. And yeah fuck spiral thrust/ skyward thrust.
Im at my 30s and ive played monster hunter for while my favorite game being in fact world since you know I've been locked out of monster hunter after mh3 but THIS YEAR out of nowhere I've got interested in lance again (the first time being in monster hunter 1 when I was a child and just enjoying the idea of using shield and gigantic lance and getting frustrated because it was very limited and not edgy) and now I'm like all the way main lance. Lance is too fun is ridiculous. I think it takes a player to first understand the game to chose something simpler and more consistent like the lance
My only complaint is that guard dash doesn't scale with evade extender to some degree, but all the other moves lance has totally make up for it. I just miss the mobility guard dash has in worldborne.
I am also obsessed with lance. There's something special about blocking every attack a monster sends at you while other players are ragdolled into a corner. #lancelikenooneswatching
I like doing power guard pokes as punishes, not the most efficient but something about feels good after tanking a stronger move. Also if yall use any status weapons, Foray is a must. I've been playing with armor mostly skills and foray on sleep with some chargemaster, really crank up the dps, think I average 115-130 per poke.
Honestly lance needs specific skills to boost its damage/moveset. My guess is a Lance + decoration or a buff to offensive guard. Also as a personal gripe, I wish that the lance charge and its running jump attack got a damage buff. That and a wider hitbox on the shield bash lunge would of made it my main weapon.
I was a gunlance player for a long time, and in world, i wanted to try something new and found my second love, the bow, in rise i tried the switch axe, and LBG ( tho that one is quite easy ) and loved them both Recently, seing multiple video about lance, i decided to try for myself and ... i couldn't play it at all, i feel so slow ( even though i dealt damage and such ) i think it's was really a case of overhype i got from multiple video, but the new gunlance mobility, bow dash and shot playstyle, lbg range, made me a speed addict and, with how low my mastery of lance is, i couldn't bear to play more of it This isn't to say that lance is bad, absolutely not, BUT the weapon really has a bigger skill floor than it appears to have at first sight I tried Insect glaive recently, and contrary to lance, was really enjoying playing it from the get go, even though kinsect seemed like a more complex weapon than lance I think the last thing that lance miss is a good mobility option ( but one that still need a drawback, like said in the video, it's fine that it doesn't have one cause how it can stay in monsters faces compared to other weapons ) cause there are ton of monster that move around a ton, and you will just have a feeling of being slow/late and having the sheathe your weapon, i can't imagine how violet mizutsune, in a team with like, 1 hbg, a hunting horn and an insect glaive must feel like for a lance player
My lance brothers and sisters need to build to gasoline mitsuzune armor! It lets you play guard lance and evade lance at the same time! Never have my damage numbers been higher and more efficient because I have infinite options to attack non-stop.
Now if only Shield Tackle would not amount to ~10% less DPS than Guard Advance. Not trying to be snarky here, it makes me sad that cool options like Shield Tackle are just too weak to be considered. That being said, I don't think I would replace Guard Advance too often anyway. Spamming Triple Poke or rotating it with Charged Slap is a wonderful feeling, too.
It would be cool that they added something like "the next poke after you perfect guard with a shield bash will deal 50% more damage" or something to balance the damage discrepancy between both playstyles.
I really don't like shield tackle, it doesn't let me reposition better during my combos like you can be poking and if you get too close to the monster you can't back shield step and reposition all you can do is turn your back to the monster and get hit I dint want to get closer to the monster I want to move back while being safe so I can follow UT with the perfect attack shield tackle just ruins the momentum for me, of course this is my experience if you like it use it but me personally can't stand using shield tackle

yes it's so underrrated and you can even use items that can be used in air immediately as you use the switch skill (like flashbombs or ailment bugs)

Just try more. There is no reason to limit yourself, AND you'll have more gear to craft -> more reason to keep playing the game

finally a shield tackle enjoyer. i love that move, even if you lose a bit of damage. so much snappier then guard dash.

I started with World, tried Lance and didn't liked it. Iceborne came and I tried Lance again. Still didn't liked it until I picked up what was going on with Guard Counters. I don't play Rise but God damn it, Lance is most loved weapon. Dashes, Guard Dashes and countering everything is just special. Lance is not a weapon, it's a live style.
from a Gunlance main here to the other Lance players out there, whenever I team up with Lances, I feel we cover each others defenses and weaknesses UwU
There's probably no weapon more interactive with the monster than Lance.
Coming from a traditional lance background, I kinda still likes guard dash more tho. I like that feeling of free relocating to headlock a monster to death.
And yeah fuck spiral thrust/ skyward thrust.

Im at my 30s and ive played monster hunter for while my favorite game being in fact world since you know I've been locked out of monster hunter after mh3 but THIS YEAR out of nowhere I've got interested in lance again (the first time being in monster hunter 1 when I was a child and just enjoying the idea of using shield and gigantic lance and getting frustrated because it was very limited and not edgy) and now I'm like all the way main lance. Lance is too fun is ridiculous. I think it takes a player to first understand the game to chose something simpler and more consistent like the lance
My only complaint is that guard dash doesn't scale with evade extender to some degree, but all the other moves lance has totally make up for it. I just miss the mobility guard dash has in worldborne.
I am also obsessed with lance. There's something special about blocking every attack a monster sends at you while other players are ragdolled into a corner. #lancelikenooneswatching
I like doing power guard pokes as punishes, not the most efficient but something about feels good after tanking a stronger move.
Also if yall use any status weapons, Foray is a must. I've been playing with armor mostly skills and foray on sleep with some chargemaster, really crank up the dps, think I average 115-130 per poke.

Honestly lance needs specific skills to boost its damage/moveset. My guess is a Lance + decoration or a buff to offensive guard. Also as a personal gripe, I wish that the lance charge and its running jump attack got a damage buff. That and a wider hitbox on the shield bash lunge would of made it my main weapon.
Nothing beats the clutch counter, it’s too good.

I was a gunlance player for a long time, and in world, i wanted to try something new and found my second love, the bow, in rise i tried the switch axe, and LBG ( tho that one is quite easy ) and loved them both
Recently, seing multiple video about lance, i decided to try for myself and ... i couldn't play it at all, i feel so slow ( even though i dealt damage and such ) i think it's was really a case of overhype i got from multiple video, but the new gunlance mobility, bow dash and shot playstyle, lbg range, made me a speed addict and, with how low my mastery of lance is, i couldn't bear to play more of it
This isn't to say that lance is bad, absolutely not, BUT the weapon really has a bigger skill floor than it appears to have at first sight
I tried Insect glaive recently, and contrary to lance, was really enjoying playing it from the get go, even though kinsect seemed like a more complex weapon than lance
I think the last thing that lance miss is a good mobility option ( but one that still need a drawback, like said in the video, it's fine that it doesn't have one cause how it can stay in monsters faces compared to other weapons ) cause there are ton of monster that move around a ton, and you will just have a feeling of being slow/late and having the sheathe your weapon, i can't imagine how violet mizutsune, in a team with like, 1 hbg, a hunting horn and an insect glaive must feel like for a lance player
My lance brothers and sisters need to build to gasoline mitsuzune armor! It lets you play guard lance and evade lance at the same time! Never have my damage numbers been higher and more efficient because I have infinite options to attack non-stop.
Now if only Shield Tackle would not amount to ~10% less DPS than Guard Advance. Not trying to be snarky here, it makes me sad that cool options like Shield Tackle are just too weak to be considered. That being said, I don't think I would replace Guard Advance too often anyway. Spamming Triple Poke or rotating it with Charged Slap is a wonderful feeling, too.
It would be cool that they added something like "the next poke after you perfect guard with a shield bash will deal 50% more damage" or something to balance the damage discrepancy between both playstyles.

I really don't like shield tackle, it doesn't let me reposition better during my combos like you can be poking and if you get too close to the monster you can't back shield step and reposition all you can do is turn your back to the monster and get hit I dint want to get closer to the monster I want to move back while being safe so I can follow UT with the perfect attack shield tackle just ruins the momentum for me, of course this is my experience if you like it use it but me personally can't stand using shield tackle
